♫ STUFF: SOLANGE BLOGS + ANOTHER PROMO PIC
Thursday, April 17, 2008
Solange Knowles put up a recent blog this week and spoke about her new album as well as her current inspirations. She also released a couple other shots from her new promo set via her myspace photo album. The photo above is so much better than the other one, which was photoshopped to the max.
Solange opted to address the whole yellow make-up thing (that many of you clowned her for) with a subtle quote - “YEAH, I LIKE YELLOW … ALOT” under her photo caption. Anyway, peep what she wrote on her blog..
I READ A QUOTE FROM KANYE WEST THE DAY I MADE THE DRIVE OUT TO THE BEACH.
HE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT ONLY DOING THINGS THAT MADE HIM HAPPY (DONT QUOTE ME) HE SAID HE DIDNT CARE WHEN HE MADE THE FLASHING LIGHTS VIDEO THAT OTHER PEOPLE MAY NOT LIKE IT. I SAY GO KAYNE!I FEEL THAT WAY:)
ONE DAY AT THE BEAUTIFUL BEACH, WATCHING THE OCEAN CRASH INTO WAVES AND THE SKY CHANGE FROM DAY TO NIGHT AND THE SUN SET AND THE MOON RISE SHOWED ME THIS MIRACLE WE CALLED LIFE IS BRAND NEW AGAIN FOR ME.
WE SPEND SO MUCH TIME FOCUSING ON THE FRAGILE AND DELICATE THINGS IN LIFE
THAT WE FORGET THAT GRAVITY IS HOLDING US UP AT THIS VERY MOMENT, THAT OCEANS ARE ENDLESS, AND THERES AN ENTIRE LIFE UNDER THE SEAS THAT WE DONT EVEN KNOW ABOUT.LAST WEEK, I RELEASED MY 1RST SINGLE, “I DECIDED” ON THE PAGE. (THERE HAD BEEN MINI SNIPPETS AND LONGER MINI SNIPPETS SURFING AROUND THE WEB, AND THIS IS THE FULL VERSION)
THERE HAVE BEEN HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDTHS PEOPLE WHO HAVE HEARD IT AND SO MANY OF YOU HAVE SHOWN QUITE A KEEN REACTION. BIG THANKS!
I HAVE BEEN SO INSPIRED BY THE MUSIC OF THE 60′S AND THE 70′S AND IT DEFINITELY SHOWCASES IN THIS RECORD. I MADE THIS RECORD PREPARED KNOWING THIS ISN’T YOUR TYPICAL FORMATED “RADIO SONG” AND THERES NOT MUCH OUT LIKE IT NOW ,BUT IT FELT SO GOOD AND NATURAL FOR ME IM RUNNING WITH IT. PHARRELL GAVE ME THE BLESSING OF THE RECORD AND FROM THE MINUTE I RECORDED IT, IT WAS SOMETHING ABOUT THE SIMPLICITY AND THE UPBEAT VIBE THAT JUST MADE ME FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT. I HAVE FAITH THAT PEOPLE ARE READY FOR A CHANGE AND DIVERSITY AND AN INTELLIGENT EAR AND I HOPE THIS RECORD CAN FIT INTO THAT MOLD. [source]

She sounds like a smart girl…..I kinda live life w/the same concept….I typically march to the beat of my own drum to the point that what i’m doing will become my NORM–and either u accept my NORM or u dont. I honestly believe thats the mentality of true world changers….if your swayed by the masses you’ll never stand out!

re: #3…….I agree, if she really doesnt, but I also enjoy the imperfections….its the exact opposite of plastic-like Beyonce, which is one of the reasons she gets on my nerves. It also heightens the likelihood that Solange is writing the blog herself and not some over-paid publicist, which I can always appreciate.

Solange is smart…she went to Pharrell for a record. I can’t even count number of potential R&B female singers who could have saved their careers over the last several years if they just went to the right producer.
If she really wrote her owns, her words are beautifully crafted. Also, I like yellow too (the official color of summer 2008), but I don’t wear it on my face.

just got off her myspace and yeah her music is better than her sister’s imo (it’s more interesting). she can’t sing as well though which is funny though b/c i remember her sister saying that when she was solange’s age (this was when when solange first came out) her voice wasn’t as strong as solange’s but if that were true why is it that solange sings like she’s forcing riffs into her voice. i guess that’s big sis talk. anyway i don’t think solange will be big but that’s ok b/c the underground/non-mainstreamers will like her

She is just as pretty as Beyonce, but in a more offbeat way. I think she is great. More substance. Parenthood is probably why she is not so “prepackaged” like her big sis- Solange knows life can be hard for female.

Okay enough about the big sister, little sister comparisons. Beyonce is into being the classic superstar like the Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Ross, and stars of those days that knew how to be like a superstar all times. Thats what she likes. Nothing wrong with that. Solonge has her own style which comes from what she is inspired by. Either way Beyonce is as big because she could put a good show and has a fantastic voice. Solonge will be big for hopefully doing the same. If you haven’t seen solonge live at this point, you should give her a chance.

#27 You know…I didn’t find Kanye’s video the least bit misogynistic… In fact, I think Kanye succeeded in presenting an empowered and self-aware, if violent, woman…she was strappping, amazonian, flawed (remember all the fuss most of you made of her “big stomach”?)…and that’s a real departure from the norm…especially when blatantly lude stars like Lil Kim and Beyonce rationalize their shenanigans as feminist.
Oh, and Solange’s writings are pseudointellectual…at least, IMO. There’s nothing even remotely profound about comparing life and enlightenment to the sun and sea….it’s cliched.

Though her grammer may be off I’m looking forward to it simply because it’s inspired by the 60’s and 70’s. I tired hearing some of the crap that’s on the radio like “Touch my Body”, Bust it baby, and soulja boy lol!!! I mean it’s hard to find good quality music these days, I mean really!! So I’m looking forward to it. I hope she does well.

#29- I hate poor vocabulary also. It feels like nails on a chalk board to me. Spell check is not that hard to use, folks! But I guess this proves that money does not equal intelligence. I also agree that there is nothing special about the comparison between life and nature. That concept is so over done.
Anyway,
I wish everyone the best in obtaining their dreams, but I’m pretty sure that Beyonce is the only reason Solange has the opportunity to record music. I really don’t she any star quality with her. I understand that she’s “different” and that she’s a “change” from the crap that’s out today. But “different” and “change” are just code words for mediocre to me? She just doesn’t impress me.

Oh Lord. The girl can’t even write a blog without being picked apart. I like that she blogs, it shows that she’s a REAL person. I know that if Beyonce would have blogged about that damn wedding of hers, she could have had 50 words spelled wrong and all types of images that didn’t load, and it would have been heaven sent to you all. “B must have been busy”. But clearly Solange needs to learn how to spell.
WTF?!?!? Half of y’all can’t spell.
WHO REALLY SPELL CHECKS WHAT THEY PUT ON MYSPACE?!?!
I’m guessing she wanted it to be “artistic” or straight from the dome..

I like how Solange keeps true to herself. I never understood why everyone always downs her. She marches to the own beat of her drum. You gotta be true to yourself otherwise you’ll be miserable. How is Solange different? Huh? The truth is Solange is just “present”…and she’s present because her sister is famous. Everybody else, REAL ARTISTS, are out there…real artistic off-kilter individuals…and they’re making music, probably the same stuff she’s heard and decided to appropriate… The woman should find something real to do with herself…she is neither a vocal or artistic talent…go to school…

Im actually starting to like Solange because she is no longer trying to be her sisters twin, back in the day they had the same weave, the same braids, the same image- she was like a mini Beyonce and that wasn’t right. Im glad she’s getting her own identity both personally and musically. Whether she has star potential, im not sure but at least shes a song-writer unlike her big sister who claims to write songs that she steals or buys from others.
If Beyonce and Kelly had a child it would be Solange, because she really looks like a combination of both of them and thats not really a good thing in her case.

Good for her. I never thought the yellow was that big of a deal, I think it gives her a unique look. In fact when I first saw the pic on the previous entry, I was going to comment on how pretty I thought she looked, but then when I saw the flood of negative comments, I didn’t bother. Anyway, I’m glad that she’s speaking up for herself and sticking to the “I’mma do me” attitude.

Solange, SIT DOWN!!! The entertainment business is not for everyone. If she were half as talented as Bey she would of been had a successful record out, the way her father promotes her siter everywhere she should of had no problem. She just does not have it!! She neeeds to re-direct her focus. If you write well, write, if you produce well, produce, but singing is NOT FOR YOU. Too extra, too much. Just please stop trying to shine. I am not hating, but I just hate to see someone try for long that obviously is not getting the response from the public that you are hoping for. Give it up.

@whatever and? ashanti won a songwriting award too but anyone with a functioning brain can see that ashanti’s lyrics are garbage as was her “poetry” book. i remember my friends and i used to recite her poetry and laugh at it. the dumbest nonsense and they had the nerve to give her an award. the industry is not completely about talent anymore and i’m surprised you didn’t know this? bee got the award b/c she’s bee. writing a song called “bootylicious” (and then claiming to have created the word which i heard on “a different world” rerun and that show aired YEARS ago) is not artistry. also her osngwriting has come under criticism b/c most of what she claims to have written, she didn’t even write (she might have tweaked it but she didn’t actually write it). in the writing department, solange wins
@elle don’t you think you’re a little too harsh? i agree about the comment on kanye’s vid (lil’ kim and bee definitely damage female empowerment more than kanye’s vid did). but i think you’re being too harsh on solange. while it is true that there are ppl who are more artistic and creative or intellectual than her, compared to her sister, she’s light years ahead in intelligence. compared to her sister, she is creative and artistic. not everyone can be bjork or tracy chapman or sia or erykah badu (i could go on but you get it) but she’s showing herself to be more intelligent than most of the pop mainstream chicks out there (can you imagine riri writing a song for instance?) and she will be judged harsher than those women b/c they rely solely on looks (bee can sing but let’s b honest, her looks are a huge part of her fame- aguilera is pop mainstream but i don’t include her b/c she’s done her time by singing her butt off and writing a couple of really good songs) so why put her down even more?

I can’t wait until her album comes out she has me all excited and I really like how she finally came out and decided to talk about her life unlike her sis but this post is not about her so I digress. haters are ridiculous. If you don’t like her hair, make-up or her - why bother to post? Keep it moving and show how adult and educated you are.
Anywho,
Solange is the real deal and the reason why I like her. She’s DIFFERENT and a risk taker with music (just like her big sis - always comes with a new sound and something hot - her looks her music is still the prototype for women in music today). She’s a songwriter and is winning rave reviews with the SUITS as well as her peers because she’s been getting paid as a ghostwriter and a writer for a minute. Why not present your unique sound to the world? I’m a lover of 70’s music myself and I’m loving Solo right now because no one has that sound. Beyonce touched on it with DIL (especially “Work It Out” - FIYAH) and Solo is going to carry it through. Kudo’s to real artists.
