Solange Knowles put up a recent blog this week and spoke about her new album as well as her current inspirations. She also released a couple other shots from her new promo set via her myspace photo album. The photo above is so much better than the other one, which was photoshopped to the max.
Solange opted to address the whole yellow make-up thing (that many of you clowned her for) with a subtle quote – “YEAH, I LIKE YELLOW … ALOT” under her photo caption. Anyway, peep what she wrote on her blog..

I MADE THIS RECORD PREPARED KNOWING THIS ISN’T YOUR TYPICAL FORMATED “RADIO SONG” AND THERES NOT MUCH OUT LIKE IT NOW ,BUT IT FELT SO GOOD AND NATURAL FOR ME IM RUNNING WITH IT. @whatever and? ashanti won a songwriting award too but anyone with a functioning brain can see that ashanti’s lyrics are garbage as was her “poetry” book. i remember my friends and i used to recite her poetry and laugh at it. the dumbest nonsense and they had the nerve to give her an award. the industry is not completely about talent anymore and i’m surprised you didn’t know this? bee got the award b/c she’s bee. writing a song called “bootylicious” (and then claiming to have created the word which i heard on “a different world” rerun and that show aired YEARS ago) is not artistry. also her osngwriting has come under criticism b/c most of what she claims to have written, she didn’t even write (she might have tweaked it but she didn’t actually write it). in the writing department, solange wins
@elle don’t you think you’re a little too harsh? i agree about the comment on kanye’s vid (lil’ kim and bee definitely damage female empowerment more than kanye’s vid did). but i think you’re being too harsh on solange. while it is true that there are ppl who are more artistic and creative or intellectual than her, compared to her sister, she’s light years ahead in intelligence. compared to her sister, she is creative and artistic. not everyone can be bjork or tracy chapman or sia or erykah badu (i could go on but you get it) but she’s showing herself to be more intelligent than most of the pop mainstream chicks out there (can you imagine riri writing a song for instance?) and she will be judged harsher than those women b/c they rely solely on looks (bee can sing but let’s b honest, her looks are a huge part of her fame- aguilera is pop mainstream but i don’t include her b/c she’s done her time by singing her butt off and writing a couple of really good songs) so why put her down even more?

I can’t wait until her album comes out she has me all excited and I really like how she finally came out and decided to talk about her life unlike her sis but this post is not about her so I digress. I am seriously anticipating the album release. Every song that I have heard so far (5) I have liked. In this era of music it’s rare that you like the actual single let alone the album fillers, she is really feeding my old school/neo soul musical appetite.
She is no AKEELAH. She most definitely did not participate in the spelling bee. I would excuse her typos considering she might not have made it past the 4th grade, but she even misspelled Kanye’s name. “I say go Kayne.” GTFOH!

Well, I think Solange will do well, her first single she came out with was hot, and “I Decided” is great, and different, it will definitely take her places. She just has to be confident, and never lose herself in the music business, and stay humble, and that will take her to the top.

Solange is the real deal and the reason why I like her. She’s DIFFERENT and a risk taker with music (just like her big sis – always comes with a new sound and something hot – her looks her music is still the prototype for women in music today). She’s a songwriter and is winning rave reviews with the SUITS as well as her peers because she’s been getting paid as a ghostwriter and a writer for a minute. Why not present your unique sound to the world? I’m a lover of 70′s music myself and I’m loving Solo right now because no one has that sound. Beyonce touched on it with DIL (especially “Work It Out” – FIYAH) and Solo is going to carry it through. Kudo’s to real artists.

Solange it still trying hard to get noticed for her talent and not be compared to her sister’s talent. And it seems like the only way to do that would be to become the total opposite of her sister. I’m sure that isn’t easy but she is determined.

I’m glad to see Solange take another approach to music. The secret to Bey’s success lately was due to presenting her concerts like they did in Dreamgirls. Take a look back at her concerts and compare to Dreamgirls- yeah!!! Anyway, these days people are looking for entertainment more than if you can really sing or not. I’m sure Solange is talented, but she better represent her talents by trying to entertain us with some kind of gimmick or else she might flop. I wish much success to Solange.
