Well, i think he’s speaking the truth but i do think he took it a bit too far when he started using all the slurs in the chours. but like i said, the verses were great though.

Nas speaks truth in the song. However, with the continuous use of the N word, come on!!! There’s gotta be another way to spread the word. And besides, doing this only continues to add more fire to the racism issue and makes it even more blatant and ok for every one to engage in. Well that’s my piece. Y’all have a good day.

the song actually sounds pop to me. come on nas what happened to “lifes a bitch” and then you die type stuff. this is wack. and then he using the word nigger waaaayyy to much, its silly. but real talk, some of them africans dont like us anyway, they think we got it too easy over here with white people. lol

What is is about this particular use of the word that offends people? If you buy any hip-hop album that came out within the past 10 years the word “nigger” is used in every other sentence, BUT, for some reason people are up in arms because he named his album and the song that? Is it okay to say thw word a million times throughout the album as long as it’s not actually in print or something? Nas has used the word in every other album that I have heard by him, what’s the difference here that people are so offended by it now? I don’t get it ….

I’m sorry,,, this is hott!!! I can’t wait for the album,,, the industry needs a political ass ni$$a like Nas to set things off,,, controversy at it’s best oh yes!!! There wouldn’t be Hip-Hop without this man,,,, Hip-Hop touches all aspects of life,,, all topics of the world,,,, lately we’ve been leaving the political, social views point of it out! IF I RULED THE WORLD,,, IMAGINE THAT,,,, THERE WOULD BE NO BUBBLEGUM HIP-HOP!

Really wasnt offended…but the concept is so deeply simple…It makes you wanna ask, “NAS, is this what you have to do to stay relevant?” I’ve heard better, shit he’s done better… Now i’m a big ass NAS fan..but this track lack that certain depth and dexterity which we Nas fans have grown accustomed to being fed while listening to a Nas track. I say try again….This one gets a D for DumbAssness…. wait lemme copyright that before Diddy puts it on a t-shirt….Won’t even get into the “simplemindedness” (ha) of that one…

I BELIEVE NAS IS TRYING TO MAKE THE WORK NIGGA LESS POWERFULL; FUTHERMORE, I DON’T BELIEVE NAS MADE THIS SONG FOR PROMOTION, I THINK IT TAKES A LOT TO COME UP WITH THESE KIND OF MUSIC THAT HAS A POWERFULL MESSAGE.

Science

Monday, April 21, 2008 /

I think he is doing something that a lot of people won’t understand right away. He’s attempting to take the power away from the word by over using it. You know how black people are so angry when they are called the N word ( ie Michael Richsards situation). Imagine what would happen if a white person called a black person the N word and it doesn’t even affect them…They’re like ” so what… u a nigga too!” and them walking away. Then the word has no power, there’s nothing…just a word. This could actually work…

CL COUPE

its amazing how the ignorant can sling that word no matter what context its in. what this person needs to do is go down south and visit the land where blood was shed. i wander has [ this nas ] ever visited the church in birmingham al, where the 3 little girls were killed. i’ve been and the clock that was hanging on the wall w/ the precise time the bombing happened. is still in that basement as you take a tour of the church, or see the stained glass picture of jesus that only the face was blown out. this type of person ought to retrace the civil rights path. this pc. of shit needs to go to montgonery ala. visit the sights where people died to get dignity and civil rights. while people of his ILK sling the N’ WORD so freely. this is for people use that word and put out shit like this to sell records, because they have already sold their SOUL. what manner of a man are you? your secord caeer getting that desperate the concept of that whole [niggar] project and promotion was PATHETIC. as was you and yours “CAN YOU DIG IT”

This song is pretty offensive. If someone could explain to me what he is trying to do, I would appreciate. However, I can’t think of any good explanation for this. The definition of the word and the history behind it is not going to change no matter how much we use it or in what context

If you think this is “hot” or a good way of sending a message, play it for your grandparents, or parents, or anyone over 40 and see how they feel about it. This is ignroant.

I don’t think it’s publicity, and even if it is. NEWS FLASH!!! Almost every artist does every thing they do for publicity. You can’t be a celebrity w/o somebody attributing what you do to attention seeking. So how do we decipher what’s what? Nas is thought provoking. It’s not a tirade of “n-words” talking about parties and bullshit. Everything has it’s place. I say let him have his say. Everybody else says what they want. Why can’t he? It’s not going to be benefit black people, you say, well not a lot of music benefits black people. None of that booty-shaking etc. etc. stuff does it either.

See, find the word offensive! in the U.K the kids be trying to use the work as park of everyday vocabulary and it makes me sick! I like hip Hop music, and i like Nas but can never get used to the word being used so loosely and not in really any proper context. Now, rap music has become international and (in the u.k anyway) there seems to no clean versions of albums released, then non Black kids use the word and all hell breaks loose.
The word is offensive full stop. It’s not reclaiming it’s just offensive.

From my perspective (and from Nas has said about the album in general), he is trying to “take the power away from the word” or something along those lines. I think you can debate all day over whether that’s possible or not, but my point is, I am sure you hear that word in every rap song released and out in public all the time coming from the mouths of other black people, what is he saying hear that’s offensive to people? Because the word “nigger” is used on a regular basis in movies, music, and conversation. If you think that what he is saying is irrelevant or has no basis then fine, that’s a point to be argued. But, it seems to me that the everyone’s first comment is “Wow I’m so offended by that song…”, to me in America in 2008 this is acctually one of the least offensive uses of the word I have heard.

i like the song and i see what Nas is trying to say. It’s a very bold statement and people are either gonna love him for making that statement or hate him for it. Nevertheless, it brings the topic to the forefront and it has us all speaking on it. I think his goal was accomplished.

It’s not a very deep song and I’m a little dissapointed as I thought and imagined he would be going at this from a different angle. As a Queens native and follower of his from 1992, I expected more from Nas and still expect more from this album. I’m not against the use of nigg er in it’s true form to make a political social statement, but using it gratutiously just so it’s heard 50 times throughout a track is silly.

I’m not really feeling this song….

Like some of the other people said, ALOT of rappers over the past few years have been using the N word in their albums and alot of people didn’t trip off of that. BUT, I think the thing with Nas is that he is broadcasting his use of it. The other rappers said it and moved on, Nas is making it known to the world that he’s pretty much proud of the N word in my opinion. I don’t use the N word at all, and at times I do find it offensive when people use it excessively…..but I move on, because people are gonna do and say what they want regardless of others’ opinions.

But even if this song didn’t have the N word used in it so much, I still don’t think I woulf like it because I’m not a big Nas fan lyrically although I do think he’s a good person. But hey, these are just MY opinions…….

What’s not deep? In the first verse he’s talking about how we as blacks act like n*ggers for the entertainment of racist whites? how is that not relevent. In the hook he took some of Eazy E’s rhymes and spoke on how with all the evil people do to blacks that everyone still wants to be black, but no one wants the turmoil that comes with it. He’s speaking on how we all are black but us in America and those on the continent are so disconnected, yet we deal with the same issues, but that’s not relevent? This is what Hip-Hop used to be. He just made this horrible genre interesting again. Lord knows rap music needs all the help it can get lol

I don’t get it. We don’t have a problem with our women p-popping & ass shaking like dogs, we don’t have a problem with our men rapping about slinging ‘Ye and shooting each other. We don’t have a problem with dudes who have nothing to talk about but Maybachs and YSL’s. Nas is an example, like Alicia Keys, of another black artist that wants to speak the truth but has been compromised by the entertainment industry in my opinion. The fame and money have become a snare in how they will express their beliefs. Nas has been taught the truth and knows the truth but still wants to give Eminem a pass because he, like many so-called “militant” blacks, want to speak about black empowerment without alienating the other races. That is not possible. He is addressing and attacking real issues in the black community but he’s attempting to include the wannabe black demographic of each race into his cause. That is futile because the wiggers, chiggers, and whatever other “igger” you can name are usually the ones that secretly hate blacks the most. I’m looking forward to this album, I am a fan of the brother’s, but this track shouldn’t make the album. Conceptually it is weak and either you’re going to attack or your not. Don’t tackle an issue like the word “ni**er” and try to include the other races because then it becomes a pseudo-crusade. Some watered down nonsense. If that’s the case then he might as well just blend in like the other ni**ers.

64.

Miss. Tiandez Jones

Monday, April 21, 2008 /

props to #57 Tia-Bia, I definitely agree with you.
people always want to turn a blind eye to that stuff but let someone try to make a great point over the use and meaning of the N-word, and everyone’s quick to get all offensive.
People are not understanding what Nas is saying and need to open their ears and minds. Don’t be so quick to get all offended, take in his lyrics and you might just see that what he’s doing is more profound then the word itself.
Furthermore, there’s so many other bigger issues plaguing the black communities of North America, that the N-word and its use is one of the least things people have to be getting offended by. The continued rise in std infections among blacks, the rise in gun violence, and all the other ways we manage to either destroy ourselves or get destroyed by those targetting us, are all leading to our demise in great numbers. The N-word has killed no one, yet we continue to kill each other.

i respect the dude’s artistry. verses are on point, but was just ok (unfortunately half the world and most people on this blog will gravitate solely to that portion first without giving the words in the verses a second thought…exactly why music is where it’s at now). i think to deal with such a hot topic album he will need stronger hooks to drive his point home. some of you are mighty PC for a country and world that surely hasn’t been PC with you. that anger/hurt you feel should compel you to act out and start wondering why this is the way it is and why progress is still minimal in our communities.

publicity stunt? i don’t think so. if you know anything about nas, you would know he’s fine with staying outside the limelight as those who truly enjoy his music or are interested in his message will naturally find their way to him (as it should be). media outlets probably wont play the record (political and corporate policy nonwithstanding, heavily edited music doesn’t translate well anyways) which means it will be left to our own understanding to influence what we take away from this. i know it’s going to hurt a lot of you, but try and come to your own conclusions without someone prodding you in one direction.

IDK why people are getting real upset over this. He uses Nigger gratuitistly for a reason, he says other racial slurs for a reason, he uses it as Irony and also seriously. Its like No Country For Old Men, that movie had an insane amount of killing and with no remorse and the bad guys win in the end. The message was about how people in America or across the globe are sooo desensitized by violence, sex, and lewd conduct, its a satire on the human thinking. Nas does the same with this song. Think for a second then listen to the song again.

Exactly. He’s more aware and educated about his history than many of these so-called “educated” blacks, that’s why this track is disappointing and he’s going to have to step his game up. These simple negroes are a bigger deterrent to real issues getting addressed and resolved than the white man could ever be. All that being said, the track was weak and unfocused. Either speak the truth and alienate the coon blacks, the caucasians, and the other races, or just continue on with the negro nonsense.

@ 70. I agree with you. But Nas is saying he wants to point out how we all blacks, italians, chinese, russians etc have been treated like n*ggers. That’s why he refers to all those groups in the hook. That’s the message he’s trying to convey. I guess he wants us to look past the race stuff and see how much we have in common lol It’s corny & impossible, but I still think there’s some merit in it. I’m just happy to see a black man saying something at all, it happens so rarely these days.

LMAO at most of you “defending” this asshole. This song is far beyond disgrace that CL should be offended for even THINKING about posting it up! I’m embarrassed as an black american, or the correct way, AFRICAN American, to even listen to this song nevertheless, argue a point that its OKAY for him to make such a song! I love how ignorant and childlish some of you guys are, just because someone has a different opinion about a song you resort to name calling. Guess what ALL BLACK PEOPLE AR ENOT THE SAME AND DON”T THINK THE SAME. IF YOU BELIEVE THAT THEN YOU ARE A RACIST. IF WE ALL THOUGHT AND ACTED THE SAME IT WOULD BE EXTREMELY BORING. I do agree that Nas is trying to start controversy to sell records , but I will admit it and I like the song. I understand why it offends some and I understand why people like it, but I am not going to act like a teenager and resort to name calling and such, GROW UP.

Like a lot of people say, ” You are just jealous of Beyonce Rihanna or whatever., this makes no sense the only way you can be jealous of a celebrity is if you know that person or if you are in the same line of field as Beyonce or Rihanna. If not then you can’t be jealous. It always has to relate to you someway. I think. Maybe. Ya’ll should stop talking / typing. And listen to the song. Listen to the words, what he is saying, the sarcasm of him asking “Do you want to be a nigger too?”.

It doesnt offend me and I am very debatable and I always have an opinion and I’m uber sensitive. It doesn’t offend me.

What offends me is Boyz in the Hood’s song…it goes Imma shoot me a nigger, Imma duck tape me a nigger, etc etc. Off their first album with Jeezy, everytime I hear that it makes me think, this is what racist people say about my race and they don’t even realize the words that they are using….Nas is too intelligent not to know what he is doing…..

But he’ll be a martyr in the rap game though

103.

Bub121906

Monday, April 21, 2008 /

First off let me say I wasn’t offended in the least bit and for those who were I don’t see why. You have to admit that the truth does hurt and he is speaking it. While I don’t use the word myself, I see how everybody wants to use it and to be quite honest words only have power if you let them. For too many years we’ve given this word power and now when it’s out in the open everybody wants to boycott and bury it. BLACK PEOPLE IT’S TIME TO WAKE UP AND WORDS ONLY HAVE POWER WHEN YOU BELIEVE THEM. TO BE HONEST MARTIN, HARRIET AND MALCOLM WOULD PROBABLY BE ASHAMED OF THEIR PEOPLE IF THEY COULD SEE US TODAY!

104.

li

Monday, April 21, 2008 /

Safari if you are so offended, do something political about it then. Make it where NO one can use it, take Soulja Boy out…take out all the rappers who use it AND DON’T MEAN ANYTHING BY IT….at least Nas had a motive. His motive maybe misinterpreted but he has a motive. Also what about the generation before us who started to integrate the word? Because rappers weren’t the first to use the word nigger/nigga.

How about Diana Ross in Lady Sings the Blues…she said it plenty of times. I just feel like everyone is talking but they don’t even know what they are talking about.

Not saying its right to say it, but while you’re ranting and raving, have a purpose besides being preachy….oh Lordy Lordy I feel offended. Be quiet and do something about it in the community. Actions speak louder than words.

Please and Thank you.

People get on my nerves with the “using the N word to take the power away from it”. Richard Pryor FAILED to do it, Paul Mooney officially stopped using it cause he FAILED as well and changed his mind about the use of the word. With that word being used so often in the song you barely hear the message.

We are the ONLY RACE trying to popularize a racial slur. And I think it speaks volume on how we actually perceive and value ourselves as a people.

Everybody has their own opinion, and mine won’t change. I’ve had thousands of discussions about the N word and like I said, I stick by my opinion.

We are have a sorry mentality. You can’t get rid of a poison by using this very poison. We could not look more ignorant right now.

@57 and others

I have listened to the song 3 times to see if what you said is correct but in the song the only thing im getting is he wants us to embrace the word and be a “nigger” tooo. I Know in an interview he did months ago he stated that many ppl take offense to word when it is only a word. The purpose of naming the album “nigger” was so that people can take it light-heartedly and not serious at all. I do not think that he is monking anyone that uses the word but he is trying to influence others to embrace the word… which in my opinion is wrong and if people are influence to use the word in a non-serious manner we will start to ignore history and take OUR history as a light-hearted story.

This is offensive and ignorant.

This word drips with the blood or our ancestors. Has everyone forgot Emmett Till? The hangings? Those WHO DIED SO WE COULD BE HERE TODAY? Those who were spit on and who had this word yelled at them to integrate schools? Have you forgotten about them. Or is Nas and everyone else who cosigns this word so cocky and arrogant that they don’t care. This word is more then a word it has power and it has blood of those who loved our people enough to fight it. It isn’t our choice to “change” the word it is up to them. We haven’t earned that right to “take the power”. Cocky idiots. Why do you think those who actually had to sit on the back of busses and who couldn’t eat in White places to eat don’t cosign it? What sit ins have you gone to? How many fire hoses have been sprayed on you? How many crosses have been burned in your yard? How many nights have you been in jail for looking at a white girl?

I feel sorry for those who spit blood. Who walk around so proud and talk ignorant words in justification of this word. I feel sorry for them because they are spitting on those who made this world possible for us. You should be ashamed Nas, you be ashamed all of those that support him, you should be ashamed everybody who uses this word.

You don’t hear any other race doing this to their own? I wonder why that is? Sad isn’t it. How easily we forget. But not me I wont sell my soul and my people out because it’s cool or because everyone else is doing. Or because some ignorant washed up has been rapper wants to sell some records for a White record label is doing it. Nas in the words of Dave Chappelle “I hate you and I hope all the bad stuff in the world happens to you and only you.”

I listened to the song and it thought is sucked. NAS is not doing the black race any favors by putting out crap like “Be a Nigger Too”. Shit, can’t he come up with more inspirational like Malcolm X /Martin Luther king Jr. kind of lyrics instead the crap I just listened too.

I get what he is attempting to do with the word Nigger by making it less powerful. However, I think would it be best to let the damn word die out with time instead of trying to reinvent a new meaning for the thing. NAS needs to just tell the truth and shame the devil brother just want to make a quick dollar off his “NIGGER FANS”. Well, I guess one thing he can be proud of at least the racist White Folks at FOX NEWS will help promote his Hot new “BE A NIGGER TOO”.

I love the song! It’s fire! However, I disagree with Nas on some issues. First, it does not sound like Nas is saying nigger but nigga. Then he goes on to say that we are all niggas/niggers. This may be true but it is only people with black skin that are called niggers. I don’t see anybody calling poor white or asian people niggers. In this country and in several others nigger is not defined by your socioeconomic status. Your skin is! Secondly, since Nas is saying we are all niggers, can anybody say nigger? Oh my God, I can just see a white high school and college students saying nigger because Nas said we are all niggers. Lastly, Nas says he had no problem with Eminem saying nigger but I did. Notice how Eminem released an apology real quick because that ass would have stomped on. Nevertheless, this is a great song.

@Bill & Natural Mystic thanks for also seeing this song for what is is. An embarrasment. I can’t for the life of me understand why ppl go out of their way to defend Nas. How can you be sure of his motives? I’m not sure what they are from that garbage put out in that song. Obviously this is not the first time he has used the word in his music, and he certaintly wasn’t saying it for any deeper meaning in the past. So why should we believe he is now? I agree there are plenty of other issues going on in the comm that he could tackle if he really gave a damn. This is all about self-promotion at any cost! Even those blacks he claims to care about. Lastly, why the hell do ppl keep saying that he is so intellectual, by what standards? I take that back, I guess he would seem to be quite brilliant to a bunch of idiots.

@110 i agree! making the word ok to use, is like forgetting the past. it’s a serious word and that’s how it should remain

@ LULLABY exactly, no other race acts the way we do. ppl can talk about how blacks care too much about what white ppl think all they want but it has nothing to do w/that. it has to do w/the fact that we are the only race that uses our own racial slur, we are the only race that has a whole channel that shows the negative side of us, it reminds me of how at my friend’s campus, they had an event for black ppl (it’s a predominantly white school) and the black girls were bent over while the dudes were hitting it from the back in broad daylight right next to a center where EVERYBODY (students and visitors and international ppl) comes. what other race would do such. i love love love my ppl but we need to wake up. we are such a beautiful group of ppl. let’s represent ourselves in a way that would make dr.king, malcolm, and anyone who has fought for our rights proud

In my opinion i feel the sing and respect it. Im about to download it right now as a matter of fact. The word nigga does not offend me and not only blacks use it. it has became just a friendly way to refer to a friend or peer. In slave times Nigger meant an ignorant peson. I will refrain from the kneejerk reaction of calling the track ignorant. Though, the use of The Word is jarring. After some thought, I get it. I get what he’s trying to say. He’s making a political statement more so than anything. He’s not glorifying the use of the word. The song is more about the absurdness and hypocrisy of America than anything. My worry is not everyone will think deeply enough to really HEAR what he’s saying. This is the same issue that drove Dave Chappelle to give up a 50 million dollar contract. This is the age old struggle of an artist. How do you control other people’s interpretation of your creation once it’s out there for mass consumption? The answer: you can’t. There in lies the responsibility of the artist and an almost herculean task. From the negative comments posted here, I see my worry is justified. America is filled with people afraid of any type of complex thought.
