NEWS: COPS ACQUITTED IN SEAN BELL CASE

Friday, April 25, 2008

CROWD REACTS TO THE VERDICT

A crowd reacts to the verdict in the Sean Bell shooting case outside the Queens County Criminal Courts Building in New York Friday, April 25.

Three detectives were acquitted of all charges Friday in the killing of Sean Bell. Bell died after being bombarded with 50 bullets by the New York Police Department back in 2006.

Detectives Michael Oliver and Gescard Isnora were found not guilty of charges of manslaughter, assault and reckless endangerment in the death of Sean Bell, 23, and the wounding of two of his friends. Detective Marc Cooper was acquitted of reckless endangerment.

Justice Arthur Cooperman said he found problems with the prosecution’s case. He said some prosecution witnesses contradicted themselves, and he cited prior convictions and incarcerations of witnesses.

As the judge read his decision, Nicole Paultre Bell — Sean Bell’s fiancee — ran from the courtroom crying, saying, “I’ve got to get out of here.”

Backstory

In the early morning hours of Nov. 25, 2006, Sean Bell, a 23-year-old New York City man due to be married later that day, walked out of a Queens strip club, climbed into a gray Nissan Altima with two friends who had been celebrating with him - and died in a hail of 50 bullets fired by a group of five police officers.

The shooting shocked the city and brought back memories of the deaths in other high-profile police shootings - in particular, the death of Amadou Diallo, an African peddler killed after police fired 41 shots at him in 1999. Both men were black and both were unarmed, although in both cases the officers appeared to have believed the suspect had a gun. While the death of Mr. Bell did not prompt the same levels of rage and protest as the Diallo case, it prompted unsettling questions about the changes in police procedures adopted in recent years, and about whether black men remained unfairly singled out for aggressive police action.

This is pure bullshit! There is no justification for gunning a man down worse than you do an animal! Prior incarcerations? Are you serious? That judge needs to be hurt! I am from South Jamaica Queens and there are cops posted everywhere in case of a riot! Everyone needs to be rallying the just like they did for the Jena 6!

How you mean by what I said “it was his time to go” regardless this is tragic. It was his time to go. Everyone has a birthday and death day.

Somethings God just don’t let us to know, okay. I’m not trying to step on anybody toes or anything. Surely as we as we are born we will die! You all act like I’m saying he should’ve gotten shot up. It’s life! No man knows when he will die; that’s why the saying “an untimely death” makes no sense to say! because none of us knows when that time is. How can you call it “untimely” when you don’t know when the time is? I lost 3 babies at birth so I know the lost. Should I have screamed “why me Lord” or my babies were too young to die! No, God has his reasons for everything. I lost 3 sons, so, yes it’s tragic and it’s hard but we have a lesson in all this.

Maybe the lesson is for blacks in general, when we going to stop hating on each other so much? when we going to respect ourselves and demand it from others? I have never seen any other race of people get shot up this many times and get off. When we going to rally and unite for real? When we going to stay united and not forget about it in a month or so? The fake Jews are still talking about a holocaust that Americans didn’t have anything to do with. Yet, we feel their pain and can’t feel our own. We should honor this young man by uniting stronger. We should let his death be a symbol for all that is wrong with this society towards people of color.

It’s my opinion and I’m entitled to mines;nothing happens by mistake even if it’s tragic.

My prayers for the Bell family and any other family that is “Terrorize” by the Racist System. You want me to send my sons to die for this country; yet you can’t stop randomly killing him on the street. WTF? No way!

COPS NEED TO BE REGULARLY TESTED FOR STEROID USE!!!!!!

I have been bodybuilding in L.A. for over 30 years, never used steroids because of all the may side effects( genital shrinkage, balding, rage, heart and kidney problems, etc.,). But I know for a fact that many cops use them and they should be testes. ‘Roids make people super aggressive. As much money as cities payout for cop abuse, you’d think they’d be interested, but not.
There was a case in Compton that was just settled. The cops shot at a guy over 100 times, and thankfully he didn’t die. The city just had to pay a humongous settlemment. This shit needs to end.

If this isn’t excessive, then I don’t know what is! This was clearly a case of aggressive and *probably* racist police officers. Doesn’t matter if the officers were black, we all know that black skin doesn’t immune you from making racist assumptions about people and acting on them. They were irresponsible and should be punished for their actions. This shouldn’t have happened let alone to an UNARMED man!!! 50 TIMES….really….now come on…50 times…AND one of the officers reloaded! I’m heartbroken for this man’s family. No one deserves this.

244.

YEAH OKAY

Friday, April 25, 2008 /

You know I had hope that after the Katrina tragedy black people would REALLY wake up but even that didn’t change anything cause a few weeks later people just forgot and moved on when to this day some people suffer from the consequences of that fiasco. But when you talk about it people don’t seem to care. If all those lives being neglected didn’t wake up black people you think THIS ONE will?? Black people used to take it to the streets, not anymore.

Nobody will care for blacks if blacks don’t care for blacks. People see how we react to this and take notes. They treat us how we treat ourselves. Respect and power have very few to do with being a “majority”. Jews are a minority in America and people are scared of them. When you look at the world, white people are THE MINORITY (about 11% of the worldwide population) and THE WHOLE WORLD is scared of them.

Think about that.

We gotta stop moving on so fast everytime a tragedy like that happens if we want things to change.

The judge had to look at the totatilty of circumstances, the officers were acting in accordance to training and it was what any prudent and reliable officer would have done. Now this is by no means to say that this is right. I believe with all my heart as a law enforcement professional and I can tell you from all the training I have received that the officers were wrong. First…if the subject or suspects did not comply with the orders given by the officers and drove the vehicle in the direction of an officer who feared for his life, that officers training indicates that he immediately seek cover. Why? because the commands given may or may not have been heard, the subject or suspect may or may not have been impaired. You do not fire into a moving vehicle which may have innocent CHILDREN, ELDERS, aboard. BAD Training, LEADS to BAD Decisions when it count. NY State should be held accountable!!!

I don”t know what to think of this…I started to think it was a racial matter but then i realized that 2 of the 3 cops were African American….I read on cnn that the judge said he was having a problem with one of the witnesses bc he was very combative on the stand…I mean what do you expect 16 of those 50 shots were lodged in his body and 4 of those bullets still remain in his body bc they were in a dangerous area…I am a middle school teacher in atlanta and it pains me to see our young black boys taken out of the school in cuffs bc they are bringing 9mm guns to school and selling weed out of their lockers…They dont undestand that the world outside the confines of the school is REAL and its not nice AT ALL to the black man…

Michael Palladino, president of the Detectives Endowment Association, responded angrily to Sharpton’s suggestion that the verdicts were unfair.
“That’s despicable for him to say that because we have the greatest criminal justice system on earth,” he said.

Greatest criminal justice system his ass outta be shot for that comment. He maybe in charge of helping cop families who die in the line of fire but what about Bells family. His fiancee, his kids?

May God continue to keep the family in his grace and may they continue to fight until justice prevails.

Here we go again with half the news.

Yall need to read more than concreteloop. Did we know that one of the persons with the party that included Bell did have a gun? Did we know that Bell was a known drug dealer? We not going to tell that. Why the hell were we not protesting the drug dealing. Bell had been arrested three times, twice for drug dealing and once for a firearms possession. In all cases, he was released on his own recognizance. When are we going to learn. I feel for the girl taht she lost her babydaddy, but that man was lost to the streets as soon as he started selling drugs.

I haven’t posted here in a while but I felt so heartbroken when I heard about this and I knew that I could come to CL and share my thoughts on it instead of going somewhere like MSN or CNN messageboards where there would be people actually justifying these cops actions.

A few years back in my city a fourteen year old black male had taken his moms car. After being found and surrounded by cops in a “nicer neighborhood”, this unarmed boy was eventually shot in the head and killed by an officer who claimed that the boy tried to run him over. That same summer a white teen was brought in peacefully after taking the cops on a high speed chase and shooting at them. I don’t care what anyone else thinks-this society still thinks of us as sub-human.

This story about Bell and all the other stories of injustice that we hear about in the future (and there WILL be more) won’t matter because eventually we will become preoccupied with the lastest music single or who’s starring in the lastest movie. Someone said it earlier-we are quick to forget(does anyone still remember Jena6?) and I’m starting to think that most of us are just to used to this type of treatment to care:( I still care.

Ya’ll have to click on here and see what the NYPD is saying on their message boards. My people we need to get unified in these communities and let these people understand that any harm done to the people will be reciprocated. We don’t have time for marches and sit-in’s. The war is already being waged we are just to blind to see it. Our brothers are becoming political prisoners and nobody is taking notice. The war on drugs is actally a war on “thugs” or black men who don’t have the credentials to fit into this society. Pretty soon they are going to turn their guns away from Iraq and start pointing them right back at black people…….It’s already begun black people. I need you to read the entire article or maybe even google the story. Those officers were plain clothed, did not annouce who they were, and aproached 3 men in a high crime neighborhood where a argument had just occured with guns drawn. Under the situation I think he was just in trying to drive off. It does not take 50 bullets to stop a car. If they would have shot out the tires they would have stopped the car.

Those police are animals and I hope they repented for their sins because they will pay for this in later maybe in this life or the after life, but they will reap what the sew.

People need to stop thinking about color, J Dakar put a post up here about the north american union and the zietgiest. We are truly becoming a police state, now the war is between civilians and law (police force). I told you all that police don’t need probable cause for searching you now because we (people) stripped it away by the formation of the privacy acts. This was all done out of fear (9/11) and protection of our borders (what a joke). What a joke? I truly am sad about the situation but I’m not shocked. The law will protect their inner circle (lawyers, police, mayors, city councils, judges, the elite and etc.).

blessings to the the family, it’s a struggle for us all to survive out here ( in a society that objects to our own kind because of skin color).

“The war on drugs is actally a war on “thugs” or black men who don’t have the credentials to fit into this society”

Are you for real? A crime is a crime is a crime. Plenty of people live their lives without selling drugs. The war on drug is stoping us from killing ourselves. When these so call Un-credentialed thugs are out in the street selling this mess to our family, recuirting our kids, and tearing our niegborhoods apart the police are there. We cant have it both ways. Being a crimnal has nothing do with Credentials, it’s all about your upbringing and what you will allow in you life. Like I said I feel for the girl and all but what kind of mother would invite that type of man in her life. It’s sad how people knock on the Devil’s door and get mad when he answer. everything happens for a reason. God allows thing to happen and steps in when needed.

I’m shook to the core about the verdict…. It doesn’t make any sense!

The judge should address the public and explain in layman’s terms how he came to his decision. In all fairness, the average person has no real working knowledge of what criminal charges mean, even those who have charges leveid against them! Otherwise the public will come to their own conclusions and civil unrest is VERY likely!!

But even the most reasonable person could see that reckless behavior occured that night… empty your clip, re-load and resume shooting?? ALTHOUGH NO SHOTS at any point were fired back at you???

Police want to get home to their families too, but police should be better equipped/trained to handle semi-automatic weapons in a much more responsible way than the average person…. unbelievable…

they will deal with their own hell, having to relive that moment over and onver again and KNOW that they were wrong, dead wrong….

much prayers continue out to the Bell family, that they find serenity amongst this madness…..

272.

Friday, April 25, 2008 /

I agree with Ja here….but for different reasons.

The verdict was a disgrace and the judge, the city and this country should be ashamed. However, it apparently takes this to get people to wake up and pay attention.

Nothing has changed in this country except for the surface. Underneath the shiny surface, it is still as depraved, morally corrupt and full of racism, classicm, and facism as it always has been.

@ the idiots above who claimed that Sean Bell had drug convictions–unless he was dealing drugs at that moment and when the officers attempted to arrest him he pulled a weapon and THEN they shot him-his past convictions are irrelevant.

I don’t know if I am more angry at the injustice or more angry at the utter ignorance and stupidity of people today who can’t think analytically. This sh9t is not going to change until people begin thinking again.

And CLEARLY Los Angeles has once and for all proven who is the most “Gangsta” in the East Coast West Coast beef–because LA was already up in flames by this time after the Rodney King verdict…NY is waiting on another March from Sharpton or the next 50 Cent concert.

Ja (#270), can I ask you a few questions? I feel where you’re coming from about his drug dealing past but what does that have to do with his car being shot at 50 times? What does not having a marriage license have to do with this case?

A man was killed, while 2 others were injured. Parents lost a child and children lost a father. A life was taken away because of reckless behavior and you’re bringing up the fact that he and his fiance didn’t have a marriage license?

He was not killed during a drug deal. It’s really irrelevant in regards to the cops being acquitted on ALL charges when they shot at these men FIFTY TIMES.

You must be one those people who think that its ok sell drugs as long as you give back too the community. I think you might be one of those people who believe that people who talk to the police are snitches. He tried to hit someone with his car. Thats reckless. Being in a strip club at dark :30 with 2 kids at home is reckless.
Many of the black website have stated that he was about to get married to make the story seem more tragic than it is. This seems like a ploy to expain why he was at the strip club. I dont know way we ( black people) have to add things or try to change the view of fact. The truth is sad all by itself. It dont need help. I hope that answer you question.

Not Guilty….as it should be. Except if you’re the black majority, they think differently. Their idea of justice is guilty only, in any shooting against a black person. They wouldn’t know what justice is if it slapped them in the face. To the Detectives involved, and all MOS. This is the reason you should seriously think about bailing out at 20 years working for the NYPD. Do your job and go home.

The judge ruled. It was obvious. NO crime was committed, the Detectives acted within the Law…..enough with the Bell family already. These media assholes are making Sean Bell a Saint. He was a PERP. The cops know it, the public knows it, his perp friends and family know it, the criminal justice system knows it….enough already.

Kudos to the defense team for exposing the prosecution witnesses credibility (or lack of)

As they taught in the Academy, if you know you’re on the right side of the law, choose a bench trial. A jury would’ve had these guys on their way to jail. Ooh Rah boys.

‘m glad Judge Cooperman was able to see through the morass of bulls*it.

These thugs used DPF against these police officers in the form of a vehicle and got what they deserved. Driver=DOA, Passengers=Injured enough to know if they’re ever in that situation, it’s not a good idea to try that! image

Well, I guess the judge was “just doing his/her part”, just like the guy on TV yesterday said towards his reasoning for donating to planned parenthood in Ohio because there were too many black there. Some ignorant people of “Other” races keep knocking the race card saying how could it be racial if some of the cops doing the shooting were black. Black people tend to stereotype against our own (house negros) but the judge just iced the cake when she gave dem boys a free pass for cleansing the world of Sean Bells. I know no amount of money can bring the cohesion back to Nicoles family, but Lord please give this woman some Justice and Closure to this soon. Letting the dirty cops walk poured salt on her wound. God bless the Paultre-bell family. My black as* would have went pure Psycho in the court room.

I don’t care if Sean Bell was a woman beating, drug trafficking, gun peddler! They didn’t know that when they pulled up on him! He wasn’t in the middle of a drug transaction or anything. Even if he had a record- people don’t change- he could of been one of the ones that got fed up with the street life trying to go straight now. Either way yes Nicole is hurting but the real victims are her kids.
This is so terrible! From since this happened *Allll those Rappers who are use to this kind of issue should of been helping Nicole with the cake to get a REAL lawyer to fight this case! The witnesses stories were “embellished” or whatever?? Please the WITNESSES Witnessed a black man get riddle with bullets! He wasn’t standing in the middle of the street with a hostage or with a bomb on his chest! He was in a FUCKIN vehicle! His associates were there to see their friend lose his life! Those witnesses and associates have replayed this shit over and over in their heads! Have had nightmares! His associates have had to face his fiance, answer her questions and even more painful see kids that lost their father! These associates almost lost THEIR own lives! AND HERE’s WHAT WE AS society don’t know and can’t relate to: these uncredible witnesses and associates probably testified knowing in their hearts and minds these Devils would get off.
Now my question my fellow CLers- Would YOU be able to give a well spoken-detailed account of the events when you been reliving it and looking at these cocky cops (infruriated and unable to get at ‘em bklyn style) knowing in your heart of all hearts that the system would actually consider letting them off with a slap of the wrist! And then BAM! Worse- they get off FREE!
I don’t know how that judge didn’t choke on his own saliva when he tried to justify his reasoning!
-I am in Boston,MA and I am just bout ready to come out there and set shit of for ya’ll New Yorkers on some Huey P Newton- Black Panther shit! I am serious!
Ya’ll are fuckin slackin! It aint right-we need to stand up for our shit!
So now what- I catch a bullet if I raise my middle finger to a cop because he thought I had a .22- you serious!
Fuck all the other post after this- we need to start bloggin about what we gonna do!

Detroit All Day!

Friday, April 25, 2008 /

ok even if the testimony by the prosecutor’s witnesses was questionable and “the story changed day after day” the point IS that doesn’t warrant 50 bullets being shot at a man?!?!?! Is that really necessary?!?! Would that have EVER happened to someone white?….HIGHLY unlikely. Even if they thought the man was armed, isn’t it protocol to just shoot the person in the arm or leg to get them down…that’s like 2/3 shots. Why FIFTY?!?!

May God comfort their family and give them strength.

@JA

You must be one those people who think that its ok sell drugs as long as you give back too the community.

Me:What does that have to do with this case?

I think you might be one of those people who believe that people who talk to the police are snitches.

Me:Again what does that have to do with this case?

He tried to hit someone with his car.Thats reckless.

Me:Even if he did,in new york it is against the law for a police officer to fire on a moving vehicle, why don’t you go and get your facts right.

Being in a strip club at dark :30 with 2 kids at home is reckless.

Me:Oh please man like your ass ain’t out at the strip club.

Many of the black website have stated that he was about to get married to make the story seem more tragic than it is. This seems like a ploy to expain why he was at the strip club.

Me:So everybody just got together and made up this big lie about him getting married?

And for what it’s not like that would bring him back even if he was just a their for fun does he deserve 50 bullets for it?

I dont know way we ( black people) have to add things or try to change the view of fact. The truth is sad all by itself. It dont need help. I hope that answer you question.

Me:You need to reread those facts the cops fired onto a moving vehicle with is against police procedure.

race might have motivated the initial stop, but it definitely was the brutality that is what is so horrendous about this case.

those condemning bell for an alleged “thug life” because he was where he was at (a gotdamn BACHELOR party for a 23 y/o YOUNG MAN) need to get off your pompous pedestals and realize the bigger implications of this: it’s becoming increasingly easier for cops to take deadly action first and ask questions later.

and i’ve been following this story from the beginning. he rammed the police car because he got in an altercation inside the venue with some other people who threatened him. was the squad car marked? not according to MSN.com. should the officer have waited until they exited the car before taking such an irreversible action?

i respect what “good” cops do and the pressure they face (some are scared shitless on the beat), but these kinds of “accidents” are becoming all to familiar; and until someone is made an example or held responsible on a national front, i anticipate other events across the nation, regardless or race.

RIP to Sean Bell and Due Process…Hello to the Police State.

No, Ja, I don’t think that at all. And if you read my post you’d see that I did mention I agreed with you on some of your points.

I was only wondering why you were persecuting Sean Bell and bringing up something that is irrelevant to this case. But thank you for answering my questions and assuming you know how and what I think, and thank you for letting me know that going out and enjoying yourself is reckless behavior. I’ll be sure to abstain from such activities, as I don’t want the same to happen to me in the future.

And this situation is tragic, whether Sean was getting married or not, and the murderers have been acquitted. Also, it’s not just black sites that are claiming he was to be married the next day. All news reports I’ve seen and read have said the same thing.

Thanks again.

Im so sick of people saying that this isnt a race thing because 2 of the officers were black! Black people discriminate and stereotype each other everyday!!

Bottomline, this was a horrible thing to happen! I am at a lost of words for this verdict, racism is still alive and present. Blacks need to take a stand together, we have to unite….

this is just ridiculous, but it’s not that surprising
my love goes out to the Bell Family.

@Judah for you to be quoting scriptures left and right, it seems that you don’t really get the sense of the scriptures. You talk so much hate against white people, where the bible say that God is Love.(1John 4:7,8) I don’t understand how you can say you are a lover of God and yet speak so nasty of an entire race. The sad thing is you are going say to that I’m some porch coon, wanting for the white man to tell me what to do. I just started to visit this site and never comment until this post. The only reason I’m addressing you because I thought it should be said. Not all white people are evil. People in general do evil things including blacks.

I wouldn’t even do a civil suit- just as a statement but then again the man had kids. No amount of money can replace their dad.
What a thoroughbread like myself would do.
After the Civil Suit- I (as Nicole) would ask each cop for THEIR favorite charity and donate the proceeds to each charity of their choice. And sit and wait for Karma! I know it sounds weird- but I have to pray for these cops- THESE MOFOs are going to catch hell! And I hope that they don’t have kids because there are things we do and we “the adults” don’t suffer the consequences- our children do. The worse Karma when your kids have to pay for something you have done.
It’s messed up to a point -I honestly believe at least one cop feels his ass should be under the jail along with the other criminals. That was a criminal act committed by criminals hiding behind badges.
