NEWS ROUND UP: BOB JOHNSON AT IT AGAIN / TAVIS SMILEY UPDATE

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Bob Johnson, founder and former CEO of BET, echoed former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro’s sentiments that Sen. Barack Obama would not be the leading Democratic candidate if he were white.

Johnson told the Charlotte Observer:

“What I believe Geraldine Ferraro meant is that if you take a freshman senator from Illinois called ‘Jerry Smith’ and he says I’m going to run for president, would he start off with 90 percent of the black vote? The answer is, probably not…

Geraldine Ferraro said it right. The problem is, Geraldine Ferraro is white. This campaign has such a hair-trigger on anything racial…it is almost impossible for anybody to say anything.”

Johnson, a Clinton supporter, in January, slammed Obama and mentioned “what he was doing in the neighborhood” which appeared to take aim at the Illinois senator for his admitted drug use. Johnson later apologized and stated he’d been referring to Obama’s time spent as a community organizer.

On Monday, Johnson alluded to the incident:

“I made a joke about Obama doing drugs (and it’s) ‘Oh my God, a black man tearing down another black man’. He added, “I don’t think he has that common — what I call ‘I-want-to-go-out-and-have-a-drink-with-you — touch’.”

Obama’s camp dismissed Johnson’s comments:

“This is just one in a long line of absurd comments by Bob Johnson and other Clinton supporters who will say or do anything to get the nomination,” said spokesman Dan Leistikow. “The American people are tired of this and are ready to turn the page on these kind of attack politics.”

TAVIS SMILEY UPDATE

Radio and television personality Tavis Smiley speaks to guests during the Dr. Cornel West “Never Forget: A Journey of Revelations” event last year.
( Photo: Wireimage )

Earlier this week we mentioned Tavis Smiley would be leaving the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Smiley addressed a few issues in his commentary on Tuesday morning.

(listen to the audio version.)

“There is no way to put into words the love and respect that I have for Tom Joyner or the love affair that I’ve had with Tom Joyner Morning Show listeners for almost 12 years now.

Tom’s announcement last Friday about my decision to leave this morning show at the end of June came, I suspect, as a surprise to you and, honestly, as a shock to me.

I had no idea that my dear friend, Tom Joyner, was going to share with you Friday morning what we had just discussed barely 12 hours earlier Thursday evening. But I have accepted Tom’s apology and that is for me, now, old business.

Words cannot convey my abiding appreciation, my deep gratitude for the man who allowed me to express myself: before BET, before NPR, before PBS, before PRI (Public Radio International), before my New York Times best selling books, before my own imprint SmileyBooks, before my High Quality Speakers Bureau, before … well, I think you get my point.

Sometimes I joke that my life is really divided into two periods, ‘BT’ and ‘AT’, ‘Before Tom’ and ‘After Tom’.

Smiley mentioned numerous projects on Tuesday as his need to “clean some stuff off [his] plate”: three documentaries; America I Am: The African American Imprint on America, “the biggest, baddest, boldest, Black exhibit ever created”; and SmileyBooks, in addition to other endeavors.

The complete transcript is available online.

Every biracial person knows what Obama is going through (and feels represent by him) and as a biracial person myself I love how he handles it. I’m from holland, but if i was american he would get my vote. He represent people of all kinds that’s why he got ahead start. That BOB JOHNSON guy is plain a selfhater.

okay yea i think that if obama was white he wouldnt be leading but the thing IS HE IS BLACK and nobody is trying to except a black mean winning or leading period

when he made that comment about him doing drugs way back i think it was a good thing to do because with the sneaking things the clinton campaign are doing just to get a vote it probally would have came out anyway all he said he udes to do was smoke a little weed not do crack aint no tellin bob as probally did to

im not going to say that obama go 90% ofthe black vote just cuz he’s black but look at what hillary is doing and not doing to get the vote and the racial comments her party have been making ITS HER FAULT SHE ISNT GETTING IN WITH THE BLACK COMMUNITY

STOP HATING ON BARACK FOR SUCCUESSFULLY GETTING SOME WHERE THAT OTHER BLACK POLITICIANS TRIED TO GET BUT DIDNT DO ENOUGH TO GET THERE

SO I guess according to Ferraro and Johnson any black person who is ever successful playing this white mans game is only successful because of his race. Not because of his intelligence or ability to do the job. How quickly have we forgotten about Jesse Jackson and all those other black presidential candidates in the past who did not come withinh 100 miles of touching a presidential nomination. They were black too. So its not simply his race its more than that. Not to mention that black people only make up about 13% of the population so where the hell else are his votes coming from since he is the front runner.

Shit Hilary is only where she is because she is the wife of an ex President!

Bob Johnson rage against Obama and his “kiss the BUTT of the Clintons” attitude makes my vote for Obama more valuable! regarding the margin issue:

I suggest using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer hasn’t updated their web 2.0 formats, so people who are using lower versions of the web browser will experience some difficulty. Also, screen resolution may be a factor. I never have margin issues with my browsers (and I use them all), so I’m not sure why many people are. Remember to update every browser you use with the latest version.

@ Greg_Arious I co-sign with you. Also, nobody didn’t care about numbers when different groups of americans were not allowed to vote thereby giving them 100% of the vote, so if Presidential hopeful Mr. Obama starts with 90% then it is what it is…. the universe always makes it right! Yes we can!

And you know what? It bothers me that people want to just label Obama as just a Black Man, ignoring the fact that he is also White! One could argue that he is more White than Black since he was raised by a White mother and her White parents. Brought up in Hawaii (I dare you name another Black person from Hawaii, lol). He had few to no contact with his Black biological father (look it up).Obama is just as White as he is Black! By America labeling him just solely Black, just confirms to me, the race issue still exists. How can you deny that? Obama is damn near perfect, but they still want to tarnish his character based on his ethnicity. Meanwhile, Uncle Bob reports to the Master/Media that Obama is no good because he wants so desperately to earn their respect and inside hating the fact that he could never be Obama. This is all a game! It’s up to us to hold these players accountable for their actions and let them know that we live in the real world with real issues…not this political theatre they are engaged in.

ITS NOT OBAMA’S FAUGHT HILLARY HAS LIED OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND HAS FAILED TO REACH THE BLACK COMMUNITY

HE HAS CLEARLY FORGOTTEN ABOUT HIS OWN

OKAY BET DID PAVE A WAY FOR BLACK ARTIST BUT AT THE SAME TIME WHEN HE WAS PRESIDENT ALL BET DID WAS COPY THE WORKS OF ANOTHER PRODOMINATELY WHITE TV STATION

OBAMA HAS CLEARLY BEEN A SUCCESS AT WHAT OTHER BLACK POLITICIANS COULDNT DO. AND THATS BECAUSE AL SHARPTON ISNT FULLY FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY THE ONL TIME YOU SEE HIM IS WHEN THERE IS SOMETHING WITH HIGH PUBLICITY WHERE HE CAN COME TAKE THE SHINE OF ANOTHER MANS WORK SO WHEN IT CAME DOWN TO CREATE HIS OWN HE LACKED

Funny enough. I grew up in Hawai’i. I lived there for 7 years. The high school I graduated from wasn’t that far from Obama’s childhood stomping grounds either. But you’re right though, there aren’t many black people over in the 808 (especially since many of the black people there are there because of the military bases).

As for Bob Johnson.. why is he always running at the mouth? Is he vying for the vice presidential spot if Hilary wins? Damn!

I was disappointed with Mr. Johnson’s comments because, the shit did not need to be said! Why can’t he support Sen. Clinton without attacking Sen Obama?

And why shouldn’t African Americans or black people all around the world feel a sense of pride or hope because after everything our people have been through, the adversity and a lifetime of feeling less than our white counterparts after Dr. King, Malcom a black man in America, has been acknowleged as an equal and may well be the President of the USA in a country that took your freedom and tried to oppress you for years a Black man may save it all. AnAnd another thing, Barak Obama is American, Hawaii is named as one of the 50 states and if you never saw a picture of his mama or no one knew about his ethnic make up if you saw him on the street you see a black man, because he is not 100% does not negate his balckness!!! The reason he as made it this far, farther than Jessie, than Sharpton is because this is his season, nothing happens in this life without a purpose and an appointed time. Not just blacks are backing this dude, everyone except most rural Americans, and Latinos which is understandable because of pre-existing bias.

He appeals to the masses and he dares you to believe he is on your side and can do something diff for a change!!! And let’s face it after the last 8 shitty years America has had we need something diff!

You don’t have to like or love this man, but respect him and what he has done. DO NOT try to label of pigeon hole him.

I I think this is wild. OKAY I am going to ask Johnson for his black card and I do not mean the credit card. LOL he is a loser, keep it up and maybe you will get an appointment of the black speaker of America you know to tell your girl what we are thinking and why because obviously you like them think we all think and act alike. I would not care if Obama was white I would still vote for him because unlike the rest he is the best candidate for the job hands down and I still wonder what the hell experience Hilary is claiming other then have 2 years more in the Senate, give me a break and hosting whit house dinners as first lady. Whatever!

AS for Tavis Smiley I do not like how he came at Barack, but the brother has been one of the best commentators on the lives of black america that I cannot even diss him right now. I think that Bob Johnson is right in the fact that he said if you mention anything slightly about race in this politics, things go hay wire. But thats where my agreeance with him stops!

True Barack is half black, but in my opinion he got where he is becuz of what he stands for NOT becuz of his skin color. PEOPLE are tired of the same ol shit goin on in this country. Is it wrong of us to believe in Barack when He talks about change so passionately? When he himself has been in the \”real” world and knows what it takes to survive. So Bob Johnson is full of SHIT in that regard. BARACK is the front runner becuz he deserves to be. Simple as that

If he wants to continue to make remarks, why not focus on making supportive comments for Hillary, and not degrading comments for Barack, because there is an ethical difference! And on his comment about “it is almost impossible for anybody to say anything.”
It should be, when what that person is saying is irrelevant.

I think that the population of this country is increasingly mixed. I am of mixed heritage and although growing up in a black neighborhood, i wasn’t in touch with the other parts of my genetic makeup, still I knew there was a common “humanity” about us all.. Obama brings that perspective to the table.. I always felt, if i, being Black, Indian, Caucasion, could live in one body, why cant we get along in the world? Obama embodies a new generation of mixed race Americans who really can claim no other origin but the US.. we are a product of the migrations of the planet.. Its time.. more power to Barak Obama… the NEXT President of the U.S.

so, BJ and Ferraro.. it is not because he is Black but because he represents the people of the US more than any of the other candidates can… across the board. I put my whole hand on that.

Mr. Johnson, why is it that BET never granted the black community with the opportunity to have meaningful discussion surrounding presidential elections?

Now, it seems, you want to speak your mind and tell us all how you really feel (which you have every right to do). But, why didn’t you make that happen some time ago so we all could have shared in the discussion?

Some time ago, Forbes Magazine named your company one of the “best” small businesses in America, but in my eyes, it has become one of the worst. Your communications empire could have made a difference…well, a positive one.

I don’t have an issue with you because you bash Sen. Barack Obama. My issue with you is that you’re an opportunist: Geraldine Ferraro made that statement early last month. Why are you only now adding your two cents?

I admire a sound business mind, but Mr. Johnson I do not admire you nor do I support any of your endeavors. Some might ask, “Well, who are you, J. Dakar?” or better yet, “Who do you think you are?” And, right now, I can respect and accept that. But one day, I will be in a position where I can and will make my voice heard and I promise you that I’ll use it for good…unlike you. Additionally, right now, many others share my sentiments regarding you, Mr. Johnson, and the company you founded.

FYI: I loathe BET and everything in which it stands because it could have been so much more. You, Mr. Johnson, could have been so much more…

Peace and blessings,
J. Dakar

They are just trying to smooth it over in the public eye. All I know is that if it’s time for Tavis to move on then he’s entitled to that. honestly who is Bob Johnson?? Why does what he have to say about Obama matter? He sold out his own black people for a profit. When asked why he sold B.E.T. and to white people at that, he stated “its only business, and it was a good business move.” He has no principles or morals, so at the end of the day who is he to attack what Obama’s done in the past, or judge his character on how well of a president he would be.
It’s black people like Bob Johnson, why so many young black people with potential will never get a break. I understand what he is saying about the whole example, if Obama was white would he have as much support, but you would never know if Obama is suited for the position until it happens. And honestly, I dont understand why everyone is so upset about voting Obama and why there’s so much controversy over who will be the next U.S. president, when ya’ll already voted in Bush TWICE!!! And he was the worse candidate. None of those running can be worse than the devil himself. So be happy that you can’t vote in another Bush and get over it. Bob Johnson should be kicking himself, cause theres no doubt in my mind that he voted Bush in too, instead of slandering Obama.

Black people have to understand that this Bob Johnson thing is the precursor to the anti-affirmative action agenda that the powers that be will soon be implementing. They will use, like they always use, a sambo coon negro that they have allowed to eat at their table and wax fat to show his gratitude by assisting them in one of their strategems. This has nothing to do with Barack Obama. He’s a means to an end and he’s willfully being used himself. Bob Johnson is one in a series of prominent black moneymakers and politicians that will be used as mouthpieces for the white man’s anti-quota-based hiring movement. Most caucasians believe that the few blacks in prestigious universities and corporate America are only there to fill a number so that speaks volumes on the chances to attain employment that black people (particularly black men) will have once they eradicate affirmative action. White people in America have convinced themselves that they know what racism is through this new “reverse-racism” madness because they do not know how to react when everything doesn’t go their way.

Bob Johnson is a coon, there is no doubt about that, but he is well-versed in his Americanized indoctrination and will defeat most negroes out here in a debate regarding this election because he’s taken that “color doesn’t matter” mentality to it’s ultimate. There isn’t the contradiction with him that you see with the average black person. The average black person in America that wants “unity of all races” but still wants to be “pro-black” is confused because that is not possible. I have more respect for Bob Johnson because at least he’s consistent in his coonery. Once you partake in the electoral process and whole-heartedly believe in it, color is not supposed to be a factor (allegedly). A black person is not self-hateful because they don’t want to vote for Obama. The powers that be are anti-black and Obama is a low-level member of that power structure.

1) Bob Johnson may have become rich exploiting Black folks, but he STAYED rich because BLACK folks supported BET.

2) If Hillary hadn’t married Bill, she would have been President a LONG time ago. She happened to have married a man that beat her to the goal.

And lets get clear about one other thing before we continue with this Bob Johnson bashing (and no, I’m NOT a fan of his). Whenever there has been educational and/or critically reviewed programming on TV, BLACK FOLKS WON’T SUPPORT IT. Some of you may recall the fabulous medical show City of Angels which was about a group of Doctors serving in the hood (Ok, I’m biased, I’m in the medical profession). That highly regarded show was cancelled while at the same time, The Parkers was the #1 show in Black households. WTH???

So it’s real easy for a lot of you to call Bob Johnson a coon, so if’ that’s the case, they must make the rest of you Baby coons!

Well I think Bob Johnson is a huge idiot that is obsessed with Hillary Clinton

Obama has most of the educated vote thats first and foremost, and he has it amongs all races not only blacks being that there are only 11% blacks in this country this should not be the sole purpose as to why Obama is leading.

First of all I think if he was white more white people would actually vote for him as well as blacks on the sole purpose that he is brilliant and when he speaks it’s very compelling and he has great ideas. Another reason would be is that he is a Man and a lot of people feel that Hillary is a bitch!. In my opinion if Obama had the “luxory” of being fully white, the democratic nominee would DEFINITELY be decided by now and it would go to Barack Obama. because he would be the STANDOUT BEST CANDIDATE.

Im sick and tired of hearing ppl try use their own twisted logic in this argument. The argument is essentially that there is no White male candidate who could pull 80-90 of Black voters in a Democratic primary. I tend to disagree with a lot of the logic, because 1) it isn’t true and 2) there is no discussion of who this White male candidate. Ironically, Bill Clinton with all his criticism of Barack pulled a sizeable amount of Black votes in the Democratic primary election of 1992 and African Americans made up roughly 20% of his electorate in the 1992 general election (keep in mind African Americans were 12-13% of the overall population in 1992). So there was a White male candidate who pulled large numbers of African American voters in both the 1992 and 1996 elections. Your nonchalant statement about this mythical White male candidate makes no mention of this candidate’s message and it insults Barack Obama’s candidacy as a Black only entourage. You don’t talk about what policies this mythical white male candidate would have. You don’t discuss how charismatic this mythical white candidate would be. There are all factors that make us Barack Obama. He’s quite a bit more than just a Black candidate. His campaign has ‘changed the game’ of politics in grassroots building, fundraising and communication. And here’s a Newsflash: A MAJORITY (by the numbers) of Barack Obama’s electorate in this primary are WHITE PEOPLE, despite what Ferraro, Clinton and CNN try to make us believe. Agreed, Barack does well with African Americans. But he is also pulling a large number of White voters (in fact a majority of his voters are White). So when we try to talk about this mythical white candidate who could pull a large number of African Americans, let’s also talk about who this person would have to be in order to be ‘down’ enough for us to vote for him. He’d need to be moral or have a strong moral core, he’d need to be perceived as fighting power, be comfortable around us, appear to be genuine, not condescending, honest and not tied to the system, have an inspirational story, and be a magnetic and CAPTIVATING public speaker. When you bring such a white candidate in a Democratic primary with all that, Black people will vote for him whether he’s white or green.

Obama doesn’t come acroos too “strong” IMHO, thus I don’t consider him “presidential”. Now the reason I believe “holds back” in this regard, is because he can’t afford to come across as too strong a Black man in the eyse of white folks because “they” would NEVER allow that.

This is just a tough situation for him. If he comes across too strong, they’ll label him a “militant negro “and accuse him of “beating up” on a white women.

And almost every strong, educated, well-spoken, and opiniated woman I know is called a bitch, so what else is new? That “bitchiness” comes off VERY presidential IMHO.

I don’t get it, we are all individuals with our own thoughts etc, so when a person expresses an opinion and happens to be a supporter of someone, in this case Hillary Clinton we lump them and their comments belonging to Hillary Clinton. I can support someone and have a few thoughts that may be the opposite of theirs, so it’s not fair to blame this on the Clinton Camp and label this as an attempt to have Hillary win at all costs.

Just remember because we support someone does not mean we believe in every single thing they believe in, we each have our own opinions.

@ # 9 you said it best after reading that comment, there is nothing left to say. Bob Johnson is just being a hater. Period. Them shady ass Clintons are probably paying all of these “the world is just not ready for a black president cause massa’ said so” black politicians, etc. anyway. I think because they came up in the Civil Rights movement era, they have an attitude as if they have already been defeated. To them black people just live in a “white man’s” world and we do what is necessary to get by. Thats crap. So they run behind Hillary because they are so used to have a white person as a leader so much that as soon as someone of color is leading, its not right. Something has to be wrong. Like we in the twilight zone or something. So the attacks will continue to come and Obama is ready for them. They can all go kick rocks somewhere as far as I’m concerned, especially Bob Johnson. Just because your a billionaire does not mean you can going around bashing Obama. When did you wake up and decide to be a politician. Geraldine probably gave him a nice blow job to make that comment.

So now I’m reading the comments and I read people saying Obama is damn near perfect and how Hillary is only doing as well as she is because her husband is the Ex-President and also that Bob Johnson/Ferraro says Obama is only where he’s at now because he’s black.

First about Obama being damn near perfect?? Wow do you really know the man?? Have some of you even heard of him 2 or 3 years ago?? Please!! He’s a human and therefore far from perfect, I think he’d tell you that too.

Secondly, can you really say Hillary is really here because of Bill Clinton? How many other Presidents wives do you know that have run for president? She is an educated woman and had done time in the whitehouse and the senate, so yes we know her because she’s Bill Clinton’s wife but is that her fault? Are you guys saying she shouldn’t run because she was fortunate to be in that position??

Lastly, think about what the comment means that Obama is only where he is because he’s a black…well um yes he is, if he were anything or anyone else he would not be who he is or had the experience he’s had etc. So why are people taking the comment negatively. It’s like saying Michael Jordan is where he is because he can play basketball.

We have come along way, and i doubt that he is getting a break because he is a black man, because if that were the case we wouldn’t have so many of our black men arrested for bogus charges, or be turned away for credit, or not able to climb corp ladders. I dont think its because he is black its because Hillary not talking about nothing when it comes to being president. Obama is not just about the black man, he made sure it was known that he is about all men, and helping this nation and picking up the pieces that the Republican Party is going to leave behind. I know plenty of black people who aren’t voting for him because he is black. I wish they would sit down, because its going to be so much division that when its time to have people vote for the real race, they might not vote at all because thier person isn’t the one who was choosen during primaries.

The only advantage a Black man has in this country is playing a sport period. I would also have a lot more respect for Bob Johnson (ok I’m lying I hate what BET has become lol) if he could support his friend with out trying to bring someone else down rather they be Black or White. It’s not till Obama won Iowa, which is by far a majority white state, with few blacks, then most black people started supporting Obama. Bob johnson should be ashamed of himself for making those comments. He do not represent me, nor, me as a black blue collar worker man living in NYC. Bob Johnson should of said ” Hillary lost the black vote because the remarks made by Bill Clinton in South Carolina about jesse jackson winning when he ran for president”.

I feel the only reason Hillary is staying in the race is because, if she lost she will probably hope to God Barack don’t win. She needs to get the hell out and let Obama get ready for the general election. CNN and all major networks already said it will be impossible for hillary to win the nomination. so u may ask yourself why is she staying in, it’s because hillary are counting on those super delegates to back her when it’s time for the convention.

Damn those super delegates if Hillary wins because the only way she could win is by getting the super delegates to back her. But, we all know why these super delegates are backing Hillary, it’s because my husband “Bill Clinton” did something for u now it’s time to return the favor. Last time I checked it’s Hillary running for president not Bill Clinton. Hillary needs to drop out plan and simple, she is only hurting Obama chances of winning in November.

Last but not least, Barack Obama may be new in this campaign but he brings a different style to the table, and sure, some of them (Politicians) lie to a certain extent to get in the white house, but, I believe Hillary Clinton got way more lies and phony stories than Obama or Mccain. I used to be a Hillary supporter but I notice like many others did. Hillary will do anything to win, even put down her own Democratic rival Barack Obama. Stop supporting a lost cause, Hillary will not win the primaries. it’s time for all Democrats to back Obama so we can win the General Election against John Mccain in November!!!!

Well I disagree with Bob Johnson. I actually think if Obama was White, he would have long been the nominee for the democratic party. The way in which he has to earn the votes of whites is crazy. He has to be damn near perfect with no blemishes for whites to take notice of him. Once they see him as the real candidate to beat, they start to sway in his corner. That is the truth as to why Hillary is losing this race. Her credibility vs. his credibility is a no brainer. HE WINS HANDS DOWN. People want change. #70 you summed it up perfectly.
I’m tired of people telling us why we are voting for Obama,.
Your own black people insisting that it’s only because hes black we support him, that would mean that all other black presidential candidates would have the overwhelming black vote.

I’m pretty tired of people discrediting this man’s accomplishment in appealing to voters in more than a political party type way, in a movement type way. Look at how Obama responds to conflict, did you see his speech on Race.? I beg you show me one candidate even remotely capable as he is and I will vote for him 12times over….

Mr. Johnson if Obama were white he would already be the Democratic nominee and would be well on his way to being President, with a landslide victory. I personally don’t care what you or anyone else thinks, vote for who you want for the reasons you want but don’t tell us why we are voting for him. Infact, Fuck off!

I also wonder what favors Bob Johnson is promised should Hillary win the nomination. Something doesn’t seem right with the timing of his hateful outburst towards Obama.

Politicians think blacks are dumb, and can not differentiate between a good candidate and the color of ones skin.

Well let me tell you, when Obama first started talking about running for President, I was not behind him. My choice was HILLARY CLINTON. But, as the race went on, and I started to hear the debates and what each candidate stood for, I was more in line with Obama than Hillary. So, it offends me when pro-Hillary people state that blacks are only voting for Obama because of his skin tone. To be honest, she was the one with the upper hand, because I was clearly going to vote for her because of Bill… She lost my vote. Why can’t it just be because we are feeling that Obama is the better candidate??? This is a case of her camp being bitter as usual… My hope is that they start to stick to the facts and stop all this BS…

*****RE: @ J. Dakar******

It couldn’t have been expressed better in any other way. While I respect Bob Johnson’s business savvy, while I respect his ability to establish a network and gather the support needed to successfully run what has now become an empire, I LOATHE (as you do Mr. Dakar) everything BET stands for. In fact, my words have been backed by actions for approximately four years now, as I can honestly tell you that the last time I watched BET was in 2004 when I was 23 years of age. That is especially telling because I work for a major communications organization as an Industrial Engineer. My work requires that I receive all cable channels/networks free, as apart of my benefits/perks package and moreover, as a necessary part of my job (in the event that I need to work from home). I say this, to establish that I have had constant access to BET all my adult life, but since my early twenties I have made the decision to forgo watching even the events I enjoyed such as the BET Awards — precisely for the reasons you cited in your commentary.

Now, I hear from friends that there are shows such as College Hill, which apparently offer no insight into college life other than hooking up. POISON! I read on this very site (Concreteloop) about a show depicting and glorifying “ghetto-fabulous” behavior; POISON! I hear that the past few BET Awards have been OK, but have done little to further the Black cause; UNFORTUNATE!

I will say this: BET did not start off this way, I am 27 years old and I can remember a time when BET was an amazing outlet for people in my generation. I was a “Teen Summit” kid who watched my peers converse about topics that were important to me. I think Brandy reminisced it best on her Aphrodisiac album when he said “Gimme Donnie Simpson on Video Soul where I got my first attention…give me 92′ and let me put my name on it so you don’t confuse it.”

The song is entitled “Turn It Up” and that’s the BET I remember; the one I grew up on, where you had shows like Video Soul, shows like BET Jazz which connected a young kid like myself (who’s birth almost innately nudged me somewhere in-between post Motown R&B and Gangsta Rap) to Jazz music which at twenty-seven I have a real appreciation for; thanks BET.

And so, thats the BET I’ll always mourn. From what I hear, modern BET is executing the white supremest agenda far better than they could’ve ever hoped to do it, which is a disgrace. Irrespective of his personal business accomplishments, Bob Johnson should be the African-American iconic figure of how the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I view Bob Johnson and BET the way I view my late father. A man who throughout my formative years was my real-life equivalent to Mr. Huckstable himself. A man who then suddenly during my mid-adolescence turned to drugs, alcohol and womanizing. Clearly the example he set for me through his words and deeds eventually left him with a NET NEGATIVE because he wasn’t consistent in his vision for himself or his family.

I’d much rather mourn a father I never knew, than a man I thought I knew who suddenly turned so selfish, cold and unrecognizable.

We need a new thread for this one…………..it absolutely makes me sick that so many biracial folks talk about it as if being biracial somehow makes them more “special” than the millions of Blacks living in America that are quite throughly mixed. Some of you Obama supporters will not admit it but Bob Johnson is telling the truth. It’s more about color for some than anything. As much as people say they don’t trust Hillary, I don’t trust Obama. New article today in USAToday shows how he is flat out lying about not taking money from lobbyist. I know all of you have heard him say it cause that is one of his main talking points “I DON’T TAKE MONEY FROM LOBBYIST, I AM NOT A WASHINGTON INSIDER” Bull!!! He has over 38 lobbyist giving him money for his campaign. How can you flat out lie on one of you main talking points??? My point is how he is always saying Hillary is just another typical politician when he is the exact same as her “a typical politician.” So to all the Obama supporter, everyone has the right to vote for whoever he or she please on whatever merits. Don’t be surprised though is Obama is the nominee and you will be watching the inauguration of John McCain in January 2009.

Just a thought, if McCain was black, do we really think he would be the leading Republican Candidate?? Just a question!! And why in the world do people all of a sudden want to try and make it seem like being “black” is an advantage to getting in the White House. Are we being serious people?? I mean after all it is called the “White House” and nothing but white men have carried the title of President. And do we know why ladies and gents…Is it because no man of color has been qualified throughout the entire history of the USA?? No, its because in the previous elections if your skin color was not White you were automatically incapable of leading this country (people may have not said it out loud but being black was a disqualification from jump street)…So yes maybe Obama is getting some votes from more black people but so what?? How many will he not get because he is black?!?! And as far as I’m concerned every other president has been elected partly because he was White. Had JFK been a black man, with the same ideas he would not have been elected. So finally black people are paying some attention to politics and maybe it took seeing a “capable” black man running for president to help us along. But damn it, we are paying attention now and please don’t disregard us as “only” voting for him because he is black. His blackness may have caught our attention but it is his ideas that inspire us and make us believe that he can help create a better USA for us all not just the rich white or middle class but all classes and races….

On to another thought, I still can not fathom why some many blacks don’t want to see other blacks succeed. Bob is a successful black man who has so many things he “could” offer the black community yet he does not. So many of us achieve success then no longer want to identify with the black community. I think this is partly due to society created ideas of what success really is. Most successful black people will not feel as successful if they are not embraced by the white community. In contrast, white successful people are mainly successful within their own community. So successful blacks like Bob want to distance themselves from the black community like he is better than the average black man. Unfortunately, this does no good for the black community or Bob because in the larger society he is still a black man. So yeah, maybe he will get the invite to the “Rich White Only” parties but the people around him will always regard him as an outsider who has been granted permission to be in their company….

Ok back to the original point I was trying to make…(sorry for the tirade) Whites will always support whites, that’s not to say they won’t support other races but they do stick together. AS THEY SHOULD!!! So many blacks feel the need to tear down other blacks to make themselves feel good…An analogy I thought of for this presidential race is this… Eminem has been embraced by the Rap Community aka Black Community as one of the illest emcees ever. Now some in the rap community think this is partly due to him being white aside from his great lyricism. And I agree, if Eminem was black he would probably not be regarded in as high esteem but regardless this does not diminish the fact that he is a great Emcee. Eminem being white only adds to his ability to be able to penetrate a predominantly black genre of music… And you know what?!?! Whites embrace him for this, for being able to represent them where they have not been able to be represented before…So to me, Obama is my Eminem of the politics game and he has my support regardless of what the haters may say…
With all that said I bid you adieu 

@ 99 Dyvinesun,

To late Tavis has already been biased in his commentaries that’s why people have had issues with him and he’s now suddenly decided to leave TJMS. Again, nobody has a problem with people supporting whoever they want, the problem is when people think supporting your candidate means tearing down another candidate.

For instance, why doesn’t Bob Johnson talk about how strong a candidate Hillary Clinton is by talking about her political experience as well as the issues that her campaign are about. I bet if you were to ask him, what’s Hillary’s plan for Health Care or the Economy he couldn’t even tell you, but he knows that Obama is only where’s he at b/c he’s black.

Judah, I keep hearing you talk about conspiracy theories, and how none of these candidates matter b/c they’re all pawns in this masterpiece theater to bring down the black race, well if that’s how you feel why don’t you kill yourself?!!! You can always tell someone that just read Malcolm X or took an African American Literature course b/c they’re all become pseudo revolutionaries, you’ll get over it in about 3 months.

I heard Tavis’ commentary yesterday and it was awful… if he loved Tom and appreciate him so much why couldn’t he speak from his heart. He “read” and very poorly put together speech.

Al Sharpton’s commentary this morning was excellent about how to handle disagreements with being disagreeable. A lot of wisdom in his words this morning.

Bob Johnson is proof that some Black folks can still be bought…. and sold.

And Tavis once again shows that he has a big azzzz chip on his shoulder! When is he going to learn that we do appreciate what he has done BUT we do not have to kiss his butt and he should not do the work of the Black community if he feels that we are mindless idiots can not disagree with him. My 08 cents….

When is the last time a white candidate has failed to pull at least 85% of the Black vote in the general election?

Gore had 91% in 2000 and Kerry had around 87% in 2004. The problem isn’t Blacks voting for Blacks. The problem are Blacks voting religiously for Democrats without getting anything in return for their loyalty.

Which is why I’m Independent and not just in name only….

I think we need to be careful not to compare Tavis and Bob Johnson. Tavis has been a positive fixture in our community for quite sometime and he has been unwavering in his mission to uplift our community. Bob Johnson on the other hand has strayed from that path.

Hill and Bill are friends of his so I have no problem with him supporting his friends, but I do have a problem with these outlandish and shameful comments that he’s made time and time again with only one intent, to belittle Barack Obama.

Tavis hasn’t been clear on who he is going to vote for, he has criticized Barack but has not gone so far as to say that he will not be supporting him. So lets not jump to those conclusion just because he has been a critic.

And finally, lets honor Tavis for 12 years of service to the Tom Joyner Morning Show instead of saying “f” Tavis as some are doing. He has done nothing to any of us to deserve some of the harsh words people seem to have for him.

I kinda of understand where Bob is coming from. Despite the fact that he is multiracial, it seems that in America if you have the smallest bit of African American ancestry in you then you are BLACK. It’s sad, but it has proven to unfortunately be true.

But with that said, I have yet to meet an African American supporter of Obama who didn’t say that they were voting for him because he was “black”. I mean if you just read the majority of the comments above, you get a good example. People saying that Bob needs to have his “black card” taken away or that he’s “kissing up to the white man…” that all is so ignorant. As an African American man, I am tired of so many fellow African-Americans as well as other races expecting all black people to be Obama supporters. This is the United States of America, we are not obligated to support a certain candidate. Support the candidate who you think is best fitted for the job, and don’t hate on the ones who disagree with you.

Just like Oprah said, women should not feel obligated to vote for Hillary because she is a woman. The same is true for Obama, just because you are African American doesn’t not mean you should be obligated to support Obama.

In my opinion, I don’t think Obama would have made it this far if it were not for the fact of his race and his background (past drug use, etc.) If this were, say, a middle aged Latino male who gave the same speeches and had the same lack of experience as Barack Obama, he would have been out of the race months ago and you all know it.

I don’t know where you’re from or how old you are, but your statement… “it seems that in America if you have the smallest bit of African American ancestry in you then you are BLACK. It’s sad, but it has proven to unfortunately be true”…. is not a matter of opinion, it’s a matter of fact and history.

In America the LAW was that if you had one drop of Black blood that you were Black. It was called the “one drop rule” and it dictated that anyone would be considered Black if they had any African ancestry and it was given legal sanction in many states.

This is getting real crazy…

at first the argument was, Obama would never win the nomination BECAUSE he is BLACK. Now that he has killed that argument, now the argument is, he will WIN THE NOMINATION only because he’s BLACK.

Since he was Black when he started, and I’m pretty sure he’ll be Black at the end…
What really changed?

bob johnson, needs to sit down and shut up. He is still selling out the black folks. Every since he sold BET to a white person, I knew his integrity and loyalty was to the green dollar.

I live in North Carolina and will make every effort to ensure that bob johnson never get one of my dollars for Bobcats, or anything else he owns.

I will always boycott bob johnson(s) products, and BET.

It is sad that the word “Race” is not about the presidential campaign, but instead about something as superficial as the color of one’s skin.

Simply because the clinton’s played the race card in South Carolina, I no longer am voting for Senator Clinton.

#19 and #21,

Aloha from Hawaii,

I am the white mother of a half-black son, now 16, born and raised in Hawaii. He says all is good for him here. His friends are black, white, bi-racial (many half-black), Hawaiian, Samoan, Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Puerto Rican, and others. More than 70% of all newborns in Hawaiian are what we call “hapa,” (means “half), like Hawaiian-haole (White), Filipino-black, Samoan-Mexican, and so on. Most folks in Hawaii are shades of brown.

Here in Hawaii my son Ikaika (hawaiian for warrior) is just one of many strong brown people. He is proud of his race, both aspects of it, but especially being black. Everyone accepts him without question, and no one has ever asked me if I, a blonde, blue-eyed woman, am his mother. However, when we traveled to D.C., everyone asked me if he was adopted, or if he was hispanic, and other weird shit. Def. different on the mainland.

I think Obama learned a lot growing up here, and I wish you all could enjoy it. Cost of living is high, but there is no better place on earth to raise a child.

Look, let’s bottom line this. Bob Johnson has a loyalty to the Clintons, and insofar as support, we know where he stands.

Is there some credence in Geraldine Ferraro and Bob Johnson’s assesment of why America has fallen in love with Barack Obama? You know, I am going to agree with a portion of what Josh said on his post.

I do believe that part of the reason we are in love with Barack is because he is African American, and why exactly is that bad? The country was built on the back of our slave ancestors; for us to rise from the pits of slavery to the highest office in the country is absolutely something to celebrate. Do I believe Obama hasn’t somehow earned the Black vote? YES! To earn the white vote, Barack has had to campaign heavily and tread lightly. To win an overwhelming amount of the Black vote, in fact record breaking percentages (91%) of the black vote — Obama had to win Iowa. Once he won Iowa he won the Black vote. Prior to Iowa, we didn’t see his earning the nomination as possible. So, there are Black’s in this country who will cast their vote based on race and not issues. And guess what folks? Thats OK to.

Where Bob Johnson is wrong, is that if Barack Obama were a white freshman senator from Illonois with a talent for authoring/delievering eloquent rhetoric, and this sort of bold new politics en-tout, he wouldn’t go by the name Jerry Smith, he’d go by the name Abraham Lincoln.

Let’s remember that when Lincoln delivered the “A House Divided” speech, his own colleagues remarked collectively that it was a huge and unfortunate mistake. He had this perilous sentiment hovering above his political career and nearly every prediction went against the possibility of Presidency after that speech. Nevertheless he rose above the nay-sayers and became our 16th President. Fortunately we’ve learned some lessons since then, so Obama’s speech which was criticized for its timing, praised for its bold honesty, and understood because of its undeniable necessity — has not gotten the same vast shunning that Lincoln experienced. MY POINT? The only thing different about Obama is his race. We’ve had these sort of transcendental figures in the past, we’ve had agents of change before, they just haven’t been Black.

Ronald Regan was an inspirational character with lots of attractive rhetoric to offer America and he like Obama, managed to captivate so many Americans with his charm. Even today in the political lexicon we’ve coined southern whites, and small town voters as “Regan Democrats.”

Bob Johnson’s problem has something to do with bitterness, a profound willing denial of history or perhaps a sincere lack of education. For which the later is hard to believe given his background and access to education. Sometimes we get so passionate, that we dilute ourselves in whatever excuses we must make to explain away our desperate situation. Face Reality Mr. Jonson! We’ve had white versions of Barack Obama; while they haven’t been as young (Unless we’re including Bill Clinton, which is debatable) they have been as fresh(man).

Some blacks are voting for Obama because he is black. They have stated such on this very site. Also, some whites are voting for Obama because of his race and they believe the election of Obama will go a long way to healing the racial divide. Some will vote for him because he is an eloquent speaker and his message is one of positve change. Some will vote for him because of his political stance on a number of issues including education, the economy, foreign affairs, etc. But in my heart of hearts I believe the number of people that know about his voting record and his experience are fewer in numbers. ( I am not suggesting there is something there that will change their opinion.) It is likely that several have formed their opinions based on media soundI bites or pundits who are biased for or against, as if they are all objective in their views. .

I have been and will continue taking the time before the national election to learn all I can about Mr. Obama. I will make up my mind based on my research and analysis of his words and actions.
