NEWS ROUND UP: PARALYZED TRACK STAR WALKS AGAIN / BET & MTV ASSAULT KIDS EVERY 38 SECONDS / MAGIC JOHNSON’S $1 BILLION URBAN FUND
Monday, April 21, 2008

Last winter, 20-year-old Adrian Gordon, wasn’t wearing a seatbelt when a friend’s speeding car blew a tire on the Long Island Expressway. Gordon was ejected, fractured his spine and was told he’d never walk again.
For weeks, Gordon was only able to move his eyelids, until one night a sensation in his foot awoke him.
“I looked at my toes and saw them moving because I knew when I went to sleep they weren’t moving,” Gordon said. “I made sure I stayed up all night, because I’m like…look, if they’re moving now, I’m going to keep moving them all night, so it won’t go away!!”
Gordon, a former high school sprinter, was a student at Borough of Manhattan Community College where he studied accounting when the accident occurred. He now plans to return to school but will major in sports medicine, in hopes of helping people with injuries similar to his.
“Without a doubt, I know it’s a miracle,” Gordon said last week at a news conference held in the hospital’s rehabilitation unit and attended by the physicians and therapists who guided his recovery. [ Read the article in its entirety. ]
BET & MTV ASSAULT KIDS EVERY 38 SECONDS

According to a study analyzing BET’s “Rap City”, “106 & Park” and MTV’s “Sucker Free” by the Parents Television Council and the Enough is Enough Campaign, BET and MTV are bombarding teen viewers with sexual, violent, profane or obscene images every 38 seconds.
“What BET and MTV are offering to children on these three programs is full of offensive and vulgar content, the likes of which cannot yet be found on broadcast television. Being in the trenches fighting for better indecency enforcement and cable choice on behalf of millions of American families, we thought we’d seen it all – but even we were taken aback by what we found in the music video programs on MTV and BET that are targeted directly at impressionable children,” PTC President Tim Winter said.
The report also offers four recommendations that will not only encourage positive and constructive dialogue around the issue of program content, but also create movement toward greater accountability and responsibility in eliminating the graphic content to which our children are exposed.
MAGIC JOHNSON’S $1 BILLION URBAN FUND

( Photo: Splash News )
The Canyon-Johnson Urban Fund, a partnership between Canyon Capital Realty Advisors and former Lakers guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson, announced last week it had concluded raising a $1 billion fund targeted for new development and urban revitalization.
With nearly $2 billion in committed capital, the Canyon-Johnson Urban Fund is the country’s largest private equity fund focused solely on the revitalization of American’s densely populated, ethnically diverse communities.
Canyon-Johnson Urban Fund III will fund new development specifically geared to the population in ethnically diverse, densely populated neighborhoods with strong demand for new retail, residential or warehouse and distribution centers.
“The potential for continued revitalization in ethnically diverse communities is nearly limitless,” Johnson said. “Demand for affordable housing and community-serving retail is only going to increase.” Bobby Turner, managing partner of the fund, added.

You can blame television if you let television raise your child. Teaching your child is your own responsibility and should be reinforced in the school system. In addition what they learn in the school system should be reinforced at home.
BET is insulting and coontastic… I have a fourteen year old daughter who does not watch reality television or BET she just has no interest in those type of shows at all. She commented that “it is demeaning and degrading”.
Her opinion of the “women” (use the term loosely) in most of the videos is that they are loose. We might think that she is being judgemental but she is going by what is being presented to her so there isn’t another opinion to form when the woman is chaking her barely clad body to the beat of music.
She says this because I instilled and laid a strong foundation. It’s because of my own upbringing that she holds high standards, morals and values. It is her choice not to entertain such shows. I don’t feel the need to block channels because she knows right from wrong and she is aware of what she is comfortable with watching.
It doesn’t matter if it’s country rap or any other type without values and morals at home it’s a lost cause anyway. There isn’t any art form in these types of videos it’s complete and utter garbage. I’m not a BET hater I flip to the channel on occasion for a good few minutes but for the most part it’s not a channel I think about. Their isn’t in quality in their programming.

It’s not an issue of shows that are shown in later night time hours. It’s those shows that are geared towards young people and are trying to attract and influence those 16 and under. If you are going to target youth, give them something that is beneficial to the mind. Music videos now in days are just half nakedness and sexually explicit content. Play those after hours. So what you argue kids will see it anyway, but at least you did your part of keeping that foolishness away from them.

Lets face it, and I’m not knocking anyone, we have a bunch of young parents still trying to have kids and not mature. So they don’t care what they say around their kids, they don’t care what their kids watch and they don’t know what setting a good example. Not everyone but a strong majority.

What Magic Johnson is doing brings tears to my eyes it something Oprah, and Bill Cosby, and others could have done years ago instead of just looking down or ignoring the problem. I always said If I was as rich as those ppl I would do something to help the worst community.

Magic has got to be one of the smartest mofos in the history of mankind. It’s not all about formal education, it’s about maximising what God gives you to work with. I’ve never seen Magic blaming other races for any thing that’s gone wrong for him, he just does what he did in basketball: Keep his head up and look for the opening.
“We” can learn alot from tis man. I’ve watch how he’s been inclusive of all, yet been able to help so many of his people as a result. Magic benefitted from is associations with people like Dr. Buss, David Geffen, Mr. Mariani and others, who gave him the business game.
You’ll never hear him singing that old tired shit like Alicia Key, and Erika Baydu, blaming the “white man,” and never accepting responsiblity. When you don’t accept responsibility, you don’t grow. Plus, blaming someone else all the time, just dilutes the argument when there’s a real isssue there. Remember “the boy who cried wolf?” That shit is real.
Press on Magic, make us proud!

SURE BET AND MTV ARE BAD INFLUENCES, BUT IT WOULDNT AFFECT IMPRESSIONABLE KIDS SO MUCH IF ALL THE LAZY, IRRESPONSIBLE PARENTS WERE DOING THEIR JOBS AS ROLE MODELS PROPERLY. ITS THE ROLE OF MOTHERS AND FATHERS TO RAISE CHILDREN, NOT TV.

I think eliminating all the “vulgarity” and “obscenity” on TV won’t help the situation anyways. Personally parents should start raising their kids and stop letting society and television do it for them.
Just my opinion and the way I see it.

@ Shag #79, are you white? Where does Alicia Keys and Erykah Badu fit into this? When has Alicia tried blaming the white man? Maybe Erykah but she’s not hostile about it. They’re trying to teach people to EDUCATE Themselves to be independent and take responsibility for your actions. Dont diss positive music!!! Those sistas are survivin’ and you want to bring em down!
Probably a white dude in disguise….

………………………….now with that disclaimer out of the way……….
Why is it that some of you saying that God is involved with this boy walking again?
Why is this boy is single out for a blessing? How come there are some of who have far more drastic situation to live with yet nothing happens for them? Just want someone to break it down for me.

IDK, J DAKAR…I REALLY FEEL WHAT YOU ARE SAYING, AS AN ADULT I KNOW IF THERE IS SOMETHING I DON’T LIKE OR DON’T WANT TO SEE I DO TURN IT OFF/CHOOSE NOT TO PROMOTE IT BUT W/ THE TWEEN & TEEN MARKET SEGMENT MTV & BET ARE TARGETING, IT’S KIND OF DIFFICULT TO NOT TAKE THESE MEDIA GIANTS TO TASK AND BREAKDOWN THE FACTS AND TELL THEM WHAT THERE PROGRAMMING IS DOING. (AND I DON’T HAVE IT TWISTED, THE NETWORKS KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY’RE DOING) EVEN UNDER PARENTAL GUIDANCE THESE SHOWS HAVE SO MUCH GROWN UP CONTENT THAT PARENTAL SUPERVISION GOES OUT THE WINDOW-IT WOULDN’T MEAN ANYTHING UNLESS THE PARENTS USE THE ADULT CONTENT IN THESE SHOWS TO EXPLAIN TO THEIR CHILDREN, THIS IS WHAT YOU DO NOT DO, OR DO NOT SAY…
I AM ALL ABOUT FREEDOM OF SPEECH BUT ONLY WHEN IT’S DONE RESPONSIBLY AND IN THE RIGHT CONTEXT. EVEN MORE EVIDENT TO ME IS THEY (THE TWO NETWORKS) DON’T OFFER ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMMING WITH REAL TEENAGE CONTENT. THEY DON’T OFFER A BALANCE OF GROWN UP MATIERIAL AND SAY, PG-13 PROGRAMS. SO YEAH, I THINK IF THESE NETWORKS WANT TO STAY “PUSHING THE ENVELOPE” OR “CUTTING EDGE” THEN SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE THE STAND UP PERSON TO SAY TO THESE NETWORKS “HOW ARE YOU BEING RESPONSIBLE?”

Bet is the one of the main reason for the hoochies, thugs and gansta’s. Bob Johnson made millions and no one did anything about it! In my book he is a monkey-minded house nicca! Bet was/is not allowed in my house, for my children to view!
