POLITICS: PA DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY RECAP

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Sen. Hillary Clinton has won the Pennsylvania Democratic primary with 55 percent of the vote, a 10-point win over Sen. Barack Obama.

“Some people counted me out and said to drop out but the American people don’t quit, and they deserve a president who doesn’t quit, either,” Clinton told supporters at a victory rally Tuesday night after walking out to Tom Petty’s song “I Won’t Back Down.”

Hillary Clinton gives her victory speech in Pennsylvania.

Clinton’s victory questions why Obama hasn’t yet received the nomination, despite having more money, won more states and a lead in the popular vote and pledged delegates.

Obama congratulated Clinton on her “tide-turning” victory, but also mentioned that you can’t be the champion of working Americans, if you’re funded by the lobbyists who drown out their voices.

Additionally, his campaign released a memo arguing that her win has left the status quo unchanged:

“Tonight, Hillary Clinton lost her last, best chance to make significant inroads in the pledged delegate count. The only surprising result from Pennsylvania is that in a state considered tailor-made for Hillary Clinton that she was expected to win, Barack Obama was able to improve his standing among key voter groups since the Ohio primary.

The bottom line is that the Pennsylvania outcome does not change dynamic of this lengthy primary. While there were 158 delegates at stake there, there are fully 157 up for grabs in the Indiana and North Carolina primaries on May 6.”

political science has always been an interest of mine but i must say that I am about tired of this primary sh*t. By prolonging the process of nominating a democratic presidential candidate, the democratic party is only hurting themselves because it makes them, or shall i say ‘us’, look rather indecisive, it makes us look bad because we have 2 strong prospects constantly going back and forth about bullsh*t (which is only going to come back and bite them in the ass) and it gives senator maccain plenty of time to campaign without an opponent.

I too was very disappointed by last night’s outcome. I am a Pennsylvania resident, and I voted for Obama. But what really shocked me was, that after all those Obama rallies they had here, and people by the boatloads showing up and supporting him, and you’re telling me that Hillary won our state by that much?! Don’t get me wrong I like the Clintons too, but I just don’t think she can win this thing.

And I agree with #3, It is just gonna let Sen. McCain slide right back into this campaign.

@2

I can ask the same question why are people voting for Obama. He is a hypocrite and a fraud. Everyone has their own reasons why they vote for who they vote for. It kills me on this board when people go against Obama, it’s like what’s wrong with them or what is their problem. Get over it! Everyone is not going to like him and/or vote for him. I am just waiting for more people to post and say how racist PA was, when we all know what’s going to happen in NC where 38% of the Democrats are black. I just feel that some of you all need to realize everyone is not crazy over Obama, and if he gets the nod it’s going to get worse in the general.

I am happy with how Barack cut into her 20 point lead to pull within 10. Unfortunately for Hillary money is running out, time is running out, and delegates are running out. So, if you’re a Hillary supporter you must understand that she needs to win convincingly from here on out. Not 55%, not 65%, not 75%…but better. Of course she was not able to do this in PA, so how will she be able to pull this upset off? Do you really think she can convincingly win over the Super-Delegates??? It’s not going to happen.

Hillary should now do what is best for the Democratic party. Step down, instead of running negative adds against Obama. It is time for us to move forward, instead of continuing to take steps in the negative direction. Of course she would be a good VP. Reset herself for 4 yrs - 8 yrs down the line. Do this for your party. Stop being selfish and start thinking of what is truly best for all Democrats!

Senator Obama has made such an amazing stand throughout the campaign process, I think he needs to persevere just a little longer and pusg through. Do not be discourage or sidetracked by Pastors, politics and game playing. I believe God has a plan bigger than the Clintons or conservatives that want to keep him down. His purpose in this life is to be the first black president of the USA. This is the realization of the dreams of Fredrick Douglas, WEB Dubois, Dr. King & Malcolm! Nver again in the history of the world will there be a moment a time such as this!

OBAMA 08!!!

Curious

Wednesday, April 23, 2008 /

@21 You mean WHEN he gets the nomination! The fact that PA was tailor made for her and she spent time there while growing up im not surprised she won at all. What she should be concerned about is that Obama gained mad ground on her in “her state” when she had a 20 plus point lead speaks volumes. And the grand pubas (superdelegates) are still endorsing him today AFTER his lost there. So its all good because he will definitely make it up in NC and IN. Oh and by the way Hillary is habitual liar

VI voted yesteday and while I’m dissapointed I’m not suprised. PA as I said before is Clinton country. Obama is obviously going to have to duke this out until at least June. Pennsylvania is a victory for Obama no matter how much spin is put on Hillary’s win. I have been listening to the repubs since last night and the theme of the day is (Barack out spent Hillary 4 to 1 in Penn and still can’t win, he spend 9 million dollars and he can’t knock her out). My question is “what is your point?” She was leading him in PA by 20% and by spending 9 million dollars she won by 10%, if he had spent no money in PA then she would have walked all over him. I think it is money well spent. If Hillary would have beaten him by 12% she would have been able to pick up more super delegates……holding her to 10% allows her to pick up between 8 and 15 superdelegates without a big fight. The Obama campaign was never counting PA as a win…..so there is no shocker today.

She stomped Obama in PA and this is a preview of what will occur in the general election if and when Obama is confirmed as the nominee. America’s population is 80% white, Blacks make up maybe 12% and historically they do not vote. I just don’t believe the hype. Mcaine will defeat Obama in the general election. The college educated, affluent young Dem’s may support him. But the regular, blue collar, 9-5, struggle to get by, evangelical/Catholic whites will not vote for him. Neither will any Republicans and even liberal leaning independents have Mcaine who is himself practically a liberal (at heart).. Once he’s done pandering to his base and the conservatives stop squealing.. he’ll go back to his centrist/liberal roots and he’ll look attractive to independents and white liberals who do not want to vote for an black man named Barrak Obama . As much as I’d like to see Obama win… if you don’t want another Republican presidency…we should or rather should have nominated Clinton

This is my thing people want to say Hillary is more electable but she is facing the same problems as Barack. The bulk of her supporters are white and or women if she did some how manage to get the nomination how could she win in the general? If Barack has more delagates and the popular vote and still dosn’t get the nominaton African Americans are going to be PISSED! Even thought we are only 12% of the country’s population we are the democrarts base I truely don’t beileve they can with with out our vote, and although I know some people will still go out and vote I don’t think it would be a large turnout like it is now.

I personally won’t vote for either way which is sad because she was my back up plan however certain things said by her, her husband, and campaign associates have deeply offended me so I will go to the poles in Novemeber and do a write-in if Barack is not the nominee.

Barack’s Supporters consist of:

African Americans
College Educated (of any race)
Young People (18-34 of any race)

In my opinion his base is stronger than hers. And besides I seen on MSNBC and CNN that Republicans voted for her in PA (according to exit polls). They think she would be easier to beat in the fall so they wanted to help her get the nomination those same people that got her that win last night will not be voting for her if she is the nominee in Novemeber.

@ al sader
you`re right, i dont see obama winning the general but then again who knew a year ago that he could even win states like iowa, so i`m kind of observing the whole situation with curiosity, i dont care what anybdoy says but clinton has an undeniable intellectual edge over obama, obama doesnt want to debate anymore? why? clinton has always dominated him in debates so nothing suprising there, that obama of a man is like a black pastor( good orators) but just like clinton said speeches dont put food on the table, they dont bring world peace and they definately dont bring gas prices to reasonable levels, i think whoever gets the nomination on the democratic side will pay a heavy price for the bitter war going on now, republicans are sticking behind mc cain, almost every major republican power player has throwed his/her support for mc cain while the democrats are so divided, i think they will pay dearly for this in the general election, this race is such a quagmire no one has clearly emerged above, though is believed to have the most pledged super delegates….smh
lets wait and see

Pardon my language but Pennsylvania ain’t shit. I’m mad I go to school here. I voted for Barack like many other college students. PA is super white, super racist and super conservative. But I’m not giving up hope. Indiana and NC will have better sense than PA. Hillary can’t and shouldn’t win the nomination. The people don’t like her.

Republicans are voting for Hillary not because they believe she would be easier to beat than Obama But because it’s in their best interest to extend this primary season as long as possible. We see how dirty Clinton got in this last go round. It can only get worse as Hilary gets more desperate and resorts to lower tactics to bloody up Obama. The truth is that Hillary would be nearly impossible to defeat in a head to head match up with Mcaine. People can’t stand her for sure, but the prospects of another Clinton Whitehouse are attractive to more white/conservative Americans than an Obama Whitehouse any day. Look at the results of Clinton-Dole in 1996…Bill won PA, OH, FL and got 49% of the Popular vote. These are the states you NEED to win if you want to win the General, and if he can’t win them in his own primary. What kind of chance does he have in the general? The band wagon effect is not going to sustain it’s self and the media love fest wont either. Once White America sees the commercials that will run in a endless loop on cable TV and youtube about Obama’s admitted (not alleged like Bush) Cocaine and Marijuana use, as well as the swift boat like 527 adds that will question if he’s a Muslim, reprint the picture of him in the African garb and exploit any future missteps. It will be Willie Horton all over again and we’ll be stuck with the Old man….The ONLY prayer he has in the general is an Obama/Clinton ticket. That might make him more palatable….maybe

Hilary said at the last debate that she willingly fabricated things that were contradictory to what she said in her book in order to entice the public to give their support.

The ploy of the Republican party is working. Divide and conquer! Hillary and Barack are fighting each other and not working against the Republicans.

So at this point, the Democratic voters are getting fed up. The Hillary supporters are certain that she is the good opponent to defeat McCain, and vice versa. The Republicans are depending on the Democratic voters to lose interest and stop voting. Us black voters lose interest (generally speaking) and start the negative comments like “we ain’t gonna beat a white man with a black man NOR a white woman,” and “I aint voting for her; I’ll vote for McCain first” and it’s tearing our party apart! Republicans are depending on us to defeat ourselves…

All black people aren’t Democrats incase you didn’t notice. Some of them support conservative principles, the war on terror, Neo Conservative Ideas like pre-emptive strikes, and preventing sudo religious dictators from gaining and using nuclear weapons. Some of us don’t want to pay $10.00 for a gallon of gas and don’t have any problems with exploiting and controlling large parts of the Middle East to ensure that our military and economy can never be blackmailed. We can’t Waite to exploit the Iraqi oil fields and consolidate the United States control of petroleum reserves by defeating Iran. Some of us would like America to survive into the next century and remain dominant on the world stage instead of allowing communist China to surpass us in military strength . Some make more than $20.00 dollars and hour and fall into a higher tax bracket and welcome the “Bush Tax cuts”.

Yep all Black people aren’t Democrats

No, all black people are not democrats. Do I agree with everything democratic? Not at all. But given the choice, I would have to choose the OPPOSITE of Republican. Just too darned conservative. Am I in a higher tax bracket? Yes, but the tax breaks don’t need to be for those of us in a higher tax bracket. People who make less should be taxed less. That’s common sense, don’t you think? More tax breaks for Bush and the crew are not necessary. They can pay $4.00 a gallon for gas and not flinch. But I have family and friends that cannot, and are struggling to make it. Making $20.00 does not make you exempt either. At this rate we’ll all be poor! Being the strongest militia? (answering a question with a question) Does that mean Bush fighting his Daddy’s war? But that’s a whole ‘nother issue!

Indiana isn’t that much different from the PA. I live in a south suburb outside of Chicago and Indiana is only a 8 minute drive. Now there are some real conservative white folks living there. Get ready Obama because Indiana can go either way. These white people are straight lying about supporting him by showing up at his rallies. That wasn’t the case earlier. These folks are getting scared of the thought that Obama could possibly become president! And it’s showing. The Clintons have fed into their fear by their comments. Obama knew by running for president these white folks would use anything against him because that’s part of politics. Yet in some of these situations he’s given them material to use against. He must be careful how he states certain thing. He can’t do much about the Rev. Wright situation but if he had high ambitions like this, heshould found a more middle of the road church to attend at some point. I went to that church once a few years ago with female I was trying to date. The church wasn’t me, it was too loud, sermon was too forceful, people appeared too aloft. And I’m a man with a wonderful career. I voted for Obama and I hope he wins. But sadly there are still too many white folks who have mad social progress. There are two or three americas, not one!

I use to like Hillary. What made me stop liking her? When she cried on T.V. (twice!). That showed me that she is weak. Have you ever seen Margaret Thatcher or Queen Elizabeth cry over getting their feelings hurt. NO! I look at the television and see that this primary is now a race card. Barack did not want that but Hillary and Bill has made it that. No matter, Barack will win with the most delegates. The question is now, can he win White America? I think John Edwards and Al Gore are waiting to see what happens because if Barack choose one of the two ( I don’t know if Vice Presidents have a time limit like Presidents. I may be wrong in Al Gore’s case), Barack definitely will get the votes of White America and win the Presidency over John “Can’t Remember” McCain.

At the end of the day it comes down to what happens at the convention…I am either going to remain apart of the Democractic Party or become and independent because if the “stupid/super” delegates decide that the winner of the popular and delegate vote will not be the candidate I am forever going to leave the party. History will once again be made with many of black Americans and others deciding once and for all that the Democratic Party has not moved far from its slavery day roots. And to let most people know, most of us will be so upset (not just blacks but all of Baracks supporters that Hilary will not win) because we will vote for McCain.

I am starting a blog and campaign with the premise that “any party that does not respect my vote does not deserve my support.” I hope you all join me in that premise and stop these strategist from stealing another election.

I would be disappointed but okay with Hilary if she receives the nomination through thendorsement of the majority of the people and delegates not because some small elitist (black white and others) decided who they think we should have run…WTF? I am so not okay with the decision being made by another people then those who support the party (the people). I hold these truths to be evident that all men/women were created equal…hello…so when did the Democratic Party become the elitist, what happened to give me your tired and poor masses or are we only saying that for the general election…just some things to chew on people.

OBAMA WILL WIN THE GENERAL ELECTION IF ALL DEMOCARTS COME OUT AND VOTE!!! WE CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE A CONTINUED RECESSION, CONTINUED LOSS OF JOBS, AND NO JOB GROWTH, WE CANNOT CONTINUE TO HAVE UNFAIR TRADE DEALS WITH CHINA, AND MEXICO, AND CANADA WHICH IS DOING NOTHING FOR AMERICA, AND SHIPPING OUR JOBS OVERSEAS. WE CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE A CONTINUED WAR, IN IRAQ, AND McCAIN, WHO SEEMS TO BE ITCHING TO HAVE YET ANOTHER WAR, THIS TIME WITH IRAN. WE JUST DON’T HAVE THE SOLDIERS AVAILABLE FOR 3 WARS (IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN, AND IRAN), OUR ABLITIY TO PROTECT AMERICA ITSELF WILL BE IN GRAVE TROUBLE IF WE GET INTO YET ANOTHER WAR, LIKE McCAIN SEEMS TO WANT. WE CANNOT AFFORD TO NOT BE ABLE TO HAVE OUR KIDS GO TO COLLEGE SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY CANNOT AFFORD IT, AND WE CANNOT CONTINUE TO HAVE A FAILING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND HIGHSCHOOL SYSTEM WHICH IS NOT EDUCATING OUR CHILDREN PROPERLY, AND NOT PREPARING THEM TO GO TO COLLEGE, OR TO GET GREAT JOBS . WE CANNOT AFFORD TO NOT HAVE TAX CUTS FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS, AND LOWER CLASS WHO ARE STRUGGLING EVERYDAY TO PAY THEIR BILLS. WE CANNOT AFFORD TO NOT BE ABLE TO GET MEDICAL INSURANCE FOR OURSELVES, AND FOR OUR CHILDREN. WE CANNOT AFFORD FOR NOT HAVE EXTRA TAX RELIEF FOR OUR GRANDPARENTS EARNING UNDER $50,000, SO THEY DO NOT HAVE TO WORRY,OR CHOOSE BETWEEN PAYING THEIR RENT, OR BUYING THEIR MEDICATIONS. WE CANNOT AFFORD TO NOT SEE SOME SERIOUS CHANGE IN REGULATIONS FOR THE MORTGAGE INDUSTRY, TO INSURE THAT FAMILIES NEVER FACE THIS TYPE OF THE CRISIS AGAIN, WHERE THEY HAVE LOST THEIR HOMES, AND SOME HAVING NOWHERE TO GO HAVE ENDED UP ON THE STREET. WE CANNOT AFFORD TO JUST SIT BACK, AND LET THE REPUBLICAN NOMINEE, JOHN McCAIN WIN, BECAUSE NOTHING WILL CHANGE IN THIS COUNTRY, WITH JOHN McCAIN, WE ARE GUARANTEED TO GET 4 MORE YEARS OF GEORGE BUSH LIKE POLICIES, IF JOHN McCAIN IS ELECTED.
NONE OF THE PROBLEMS WE HAVE NOW IN OUR COUNTRY WILL BE SOLVED, IF McCAIN IS ELECTED, WE WILL HAVE A COMTINUED, ENDLESS WAR IN IRAQ, A POSSIBLE WAR IN IRAN, A CONTINUED ECOMONY IN RECESSION, NO JOB GROWTH, NO MEDICAL INSURANCE, NO TAX CUTS, A CONTINUED FAILING SCHOOL SYSTEM, NO FINANCIAL HELP FOR COLLEGE BOUND STUDENTS. JOHN McCAIN WILL NOT BRING ABOUT ANY SOLUTION TO ANY OF THE PROBLEM THAT I STATED ABOVE. ONLY A DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE, ONLY OBAMA WILL MAKE THOSE IMPORTANT CHANGES WHICH ARE NEEDED TO IMPROVE OUR ECONOMY, OUR SCHOOLS, LOWER TAXES,

SO IN NOVEMBER, WE NEED TO BE OUT THERE VOTING, WE CAN NOT SIT AT HOME, AND JUST LET THE REPUBLICANS WIN 4 MORE YEARS, THE REPUBLICANS HAVE ALREADY HAD 8 YEARS, AND THEY HAVE SHOWN THAT THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE DOING!!!

WE ALL NEED TO MAKE SURE WE GO OUT AND VOTE IN NOVEMBER FOR THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE, OBAMA!!!

Patience

Friday, April 25, 2008 /

I am not convinced yet that Obama can win the General Election against McCain. There is polling and there is polling, which has surprised the media and pundits with its lack of accuracy in some cases. It is unfortunate because we have little else to base opinions on as to who has momentum, how much momentum and where.

And while there is excitement and enthusiasm for the number of Republicans and younger Americans who are newly registered members of the Democratic party, the folks who have historically been the foundation of the voting public are those older than the 18-34 demographic and those who have been Dems for most of their politically affiliated lives! The people who won’t let a little bad weather stop them from going to the polls… Those who won’t become distracted with their social commitments for that day and forget to vote…. Those who don’t think it doesn’t matter anyway, because the majority rules regardless…! It is important that the Super Delegates consider electability as well as the popular vote when deciding.

It is very disappointing to hear some say they won’t vote for the Dem candidate that is not one of their choosing, for that reason alone. If you are a Dem and believe in most of the Dem party’s values, why would you vote Rep or not vote at all? Presumably to send a message. However, with the state of the economy, our current situation in Iraq to name a couple, it would seem we would want to try a Dem again in arguably the most powerful position in the world.

During the General Election be loyal to the party that best represents your values and not abandon that party just because your candidate is not nominated. Why? It could make the difference in how much money you bring home in pay. How much you pay for your essentials and your luxury items. Whether you have a sound local infrastructure that you can count on to help maintain even improve your quality of life. Whether the youngest of the young can be educated with the best resources available (Headstart/Elementary School Programs). Whether those who have been emotionally or physically maimed in the Middle East can look forward to coming home permanently!

Of course vote. But consider what is best not just for you but what is best for the nation.
