POLITICAL ROUND UP: CONDI COURTING VP NOMINATION? / CLINTON RELEASES RETURNS

Monday, April 7, 2008

( Photo: Molly Riley/Reuters )

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is actively courting the vice presidential nomination, said Republican strategist Dan Senor. On “This Week with George Stephanopolous” on Sunday, Senor added “Condi Rice has been actively, actually in recent weeks, campaigning for this.”

Last week, an aide said it was “not true” that Rice had expressed interest in running.

“There’s this ritual in Washington: The Americans for Tax Reform, which is headed by Grover Norquist, he holds a weekly meeting of conservative leaders — about 100, 150 people, sort of inside, chattering, class types,” Senor said. “They all typically get briefings from political conservative leaders. Ten days ago, they had an interesting visit — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice — the first time a secretary of state has visited the Wednesday meeting.”

Sen. Hillary Clinton released her tax returns on Friday, making public “thirty years of tax returns, a record matched by few people in public service,” said spokesman Jay Carson in a statement. “None of Hillary Clinton’s presidential opponents have revealed anything close to this amount of personal financial information,” he added.

The records show Bill and Hillary Clinton paid more than $33.7 million in federal taxes on a joint income of $109 million and donated $10.2 million to charities over the past eight years.

Clinton’s returns are available online.

On Sunday, it was announced that Clinton’s chief strategist Mark Penn had resigned after his private business arrangements clashed with her campaign positions.

The Republicans are behind the scenes trying to stir up whatever they can between Clinton & Obama. If they’re not careful, McCain’s old dusty ass is gonna sneak up and steal the title of President for the next four years. Then we’re going to Iran. WWIII.

Yeah it’s the Republicans doing all the behind the scenes stuff to stir the pot, but you you phrased it wrong, it’s the media. The media is controlling the whole election process. The majority of the media are republicans and their creation is Obama. They are only building Obama up to tear him down if he gets the nod. John McCain is who they want to win, and at the rate we are going, he can almost just walk into the white house. I am not an Obama supporter, but I respect everyones opinions and feelings, but I just hope everyone can sit back and look and see how it’s going to be really hard for Obama to win a general election with the way everything is setup (electoral college). Lot of people are not recognizing that McCain is very popular and not the typical republican. It has already been said that Obama has a slim chance a general election of pulling off FL, PA, OH, and possibly MI. No president since 1960 has won the general election without winning 2 out the 3 between FL, PA, and OH. I hope everybody is looking at this with their eyes wide open and not partially shut.

Barack Obama released his tax returns almost 3 weeks ago so why is spokesman Jay Carson claiming she the only person releasing personal information? When Barack asked her to release hers she came right back at him and said you first, that very same day his tax returns were available on his website him and his wife made about 900,000 last year with almost 500,000 coming from his books so what are they talking about? I’m gone need him to do his research before he speaks. lol

So much for Hillary sitting at cafe’s telling people she understand what they going through when she made millions last year. She better be glad for those Bush tax cuts for the rich or she would have paid more in taxes.

If Condi did run for VP I still wouldn’t vote for her or McCain

it’s my vote and i’m voting w/my mind and conscious who tells me to go for the most intelligent candidate and the one w/the most integrity which would be Obama. i’m not voting based on stats from the 60s. obama has faith in this country and i have faith in him. it’s a new day and that’s what people don’t realize. you can’t move forward w/out hope. enslaved people who didn’t have hope in making it through the underground railroad stayed behind while the ones w/hope found freedom. if you belive the hype and think obama can’t win then you don’t have the hope like those enslaved africans that stayed behind. it’s 2008, take a leap of faith-hope on the train with us.

I would need to hear Condi’s View on Major issues before I render an opinion, I dont know much about her or her Platform actually…And why is Hillary’s tax info important?? Who cares…..I agree let us not allow Mccain to gain a significant lead due to the Media Circus following the democratic Nominees…

Whereas Condi should be someone to be proud of, she’s been a proud assistant in the facististic takeover of this country for the last 7+years. There’s been a significant transfer of wealth from the middle-class, to the top 1% of the population.
She parroted the propanda for the takeover and occupation of Iraq. The only interest that are people served are those of the multinational cooperations. They are stealing money left and right. They sell tainted water, food and weapons to the American military, and even this info is known, they still get contracts renew. She’s proud of her service.
I was sadly reminded this weekend, during the rememberances of the assination of Dr. King, one the 4 black little girls who was killed in the bombing of the church in Birmingham, was a elementary school playmate of Condi’s. Yet, she thinks she helping Bush spread democracy around the world. They are doing everything but that.

I’m honestly tired of the whole election and I’ll be glad when it’s over. As much as I would love to see Obama become President, they would either kill him or try to find a way to impeach him. Why? Because he’s black. He’s not even 100% black but that doesn’t matter because even if you are 10%, you will still be hated. Why is that you ask? Because everyone hates black people. Whites, Hispanics, Asians, you name it and they hate us. It’s gotten to the point were the Hispancis are killing us just for being black and it’s just so sad. And you know what else is sad? There’s no where to go because they hate us over in Africa too.

WOW…It’s about time we got information on Hillary releasing her tax information posted on this site (this information has been available since Friday)! It’s funny how we can discuss the irrelevance of Beyonce and Jay-Z getting married though (who really cares)!?…..

Not only did Hillary release these tax returns that Obama has been consistently on her back about…..but she has also made history in doing so! Bill and Hillary have a combined total of over 30 years of personal tax information released to the public (Obama has a mere 6yrs. worth)! This just shows they earned their money fair and square (book deals and speaking engagements), but it also shows they paid taxes out the ass, and they donated over 10 million dollars to charities. With this being said, their is absolutely no doubt im my mind who should be President of the United States….Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton all the way!!!!!!

18.

Didn’t Hillary state while campaigning that “speeches don’t put food on the table”?(talking sideways about Obama of course). Well they seem to have put quite a bit of food on YOUR table Hillary. Wow! And I don’t trust those returns.. It took too long to release them. They’ve probably been tweaked or doctored up. Well I have to admit, her campaign has been quite interesting.. I mean ‘misspeaking’ about ’supporting NAFTA’ … then ‘misspeaking’ about ‘her trip to Bosnia’.. then ‘misspeaking’ about ‘the woman who was pregnant and the hospital turning her away’ and now Mark Penn. smh. Do you Hillary.

Unfortunate, but if McCain picks Condi, that would be the smartest decision he’s ever made! Race is playing a huge part in this year’s election and he may have found his “great luck charm.” Sad, but true, this fight between Hillary/Obama might just cost the democrats this election. Trust me, the Republicans are strategizing right now to take over - of course by adding some speculation about Condi. We’ll all be foreclosing on our homes and taking the bus to work if that happens. I know it may be against what some would like to see, but Obama and Hillary should decided something quickly. If he agrees that she would be his VP, she ought to accept it and be ready to kick some ass. I think that idea would upset some, but they could become accepting (in time) knowing and understanding what the democrats have to face come general election time.

if McCain chooses condi for his vice presidential nominee that would be a very smart move of his and eventually take democrats off guard technically, condi is the only menber of the bush administration with favorable ratings amongst republicans, she`s loved by conservative women and having conservative women will definately help
condi being vice president might also make her a good president because mc cain being 71 i`m not sure he will run again after his first 4 yrs
i respect obama supporters and there is no doubt that this site is pro-obama and anti-hillary clinton, i`m not supporter of both but i just wonder why blacks take obama for the messiah, i dont know why a man with a white parent is called black? smh and like hillary clinton said “speeches dont put food on the table“
everything is possible , i know that ! but if obama gets the nomination i seejohn mc cain in the white house , why? mc cain is not your average republican, he`s very popular and respected among independants like myself because of his middle-of-the-roaad views, he has support from republicans because at the end of the day they stick togerther unlike democrats,hispanics too support because he supports immigration reform that will give a chance to illegal immigrants to stay here legally,
if obama gets the nomination hillary`s supporters will stay home in november, if hillary gets the nomination i can see obama supporters staying home too. democrats have a long way to go

Obama is black IMO b/c black is the dominent gene and how he and his society views himself. I don’t see him as a messiah but as the first presidential candidate that I’ve had the opportunity to vote for that I respect, trust, and can look up too not only b/c he’s so intelligent and has such a great record but b/c he has integrity which is something a lot of people, let alone a lot of politicians don’t have. Also, this country is in a horrible state and i think he’s most qualified to get us back in shape. I went to an HBCU, have 2 black parents, 2 black sisters and a roster of black friends so why not a black president, ESP. one like Barack Obama? Why do some black people think that this of all times is the time not to do the “black” thing? As strong as my lack of respect is for Hillary Clinton & the total lack of faith I have in her judgement and skills, IF she is the dem candidate in November I will vote for her b/c I’m a democrat. With this country and our future in mind, I’m not going to not use the vote that thousands struggled for me to have just b/c I’m pissy. If I could vote for that looser Kerry, I can vote for that looser Hillary, I don’t think I’ll have to though.

So Condi might run for VP. I’d say go for it. But anyone who believes that black people only vote for black candidates… well I hope we get to further test this theory. You will be surprised and sadly disappointed in the results. LOL. And someone stated earlier that Obama supporters view him as the messiah? WTH? I’m a supporter but nope he’s just a man. He breathes, eats, shits and gone die just like the rest of us.

@11

I was so expecting that. First off, he is not the most intelligent of the candidates left, he is in the middle of McCain and Clinton. If you read what I wrote, you would have seen I said since 1960 so that is up till this election. Go read or look at an electoral map and you will see what I am talking about. I am just being real and telling it like it is, but it amazes me how slaves and all that stuff get brought up when black people go against Obama. The man isn’t even all black!! To further prove my point, he won my state (Alabama) handily on super Tuesday back in February, but polls show both him and Hillary losing big in a general. My point is just cause he won states in the primary does not mean he will win them in the general, and the same goes for Hillary cause she is not winning Texas in the general if she gets the nod. He won MS, Al, GA, LA, SC, VA, and maybe will win NC. But come the general he not winning them, none of these southern states which made him rack up on delegates and popular vote because of the large black populations in the south. I am not trying to be rude or dissing you or anything cause I respect everyones opinion, but I just try to be real. Like a couple others have said, if McCain choses Rice for his VP, it’s going to be real hard for Dems then, especially Obama.

@23

You might not think he is, but I have friends that support that man like he is a god or the 2nd coming, which is one of the many reasons I was turned off by him. It’s almost like a cult with Obama.

She never spoke publicly about racism until Obama made his famous speech on racism. THink of all the times, she could have spoken out against racism, she choose not to. SHe allowed Obama to test the waters first and she saw that the reception was good then, and only then did she speak out. People, do not be fooled by this woman;s race. Intelligent, she is, but she has no substance. By god, Hillary Clinton has done more for black causes than this woman. What does she stand for? She would allow herself to be used by the Replublicans again just to prevent Obama from becoming president. HOWEVER, do u really think Obama can pull those same states in the GENERAL ELECTION!? HELLS NAW. They’re gonna massacre the guy. He’s popular but its not enough. Republicans are smart and Obama will not pull the southern states. It’d be a miracle. Hillary the same. Only Hillary could take the big states.

These primaries have gone on waaaay too long, they’re trying to distract us from something. I see people write about, Democrat this Republican that, the last time I checked we had a republican president and democratic control over the House and Senate. The president cannot do anything without the Senate’s consent. Democrats and Republicans are two cheeks part of the same ass. Instead of looking at the party, why not focus solely on the candidates stance on the issues. That’s just another tactic to distract the “individual” (I use that term loosely) to focus on a particular side and not the candidate. What people fail to realize is the candidates are already handpicked and the media spoons feed you who to vote for. So, until people wake up, the president will continue to be selected and not elected.

J Dakar I appreciate your contribution to the political postings on the site but if you’re just going to regurgitate the talking points in the main stream media you do a disservice to the readers. Mark Penn has officially left the Clinton campaign in title only as her lead strategist. He’s still polling and setting her agenda = he’s still running things! It’s just a distraction from delving into her tax returns and discussing her latest embellishments about how she met MLK at 14 or how she ‘threw her backpack’ down when she heard of his assassination. She was supporting Goldwater for President who opposed King so who does she think is going to buy that crap! Remember in January how she said the C.R. Act would not have been passed without LBJ that it took more than a dream. Mind you MLK was strategizing, organizing and pulling arms to get it pushed through and got Congress and the Senate to support it so that the President could sign it into law. Oh wait - she was there with Mitt Romney’s dad marching for Civil Rights! I also really hate the way MLK has been co-opted into some hippy flower child full of dreams. He was feared, reviled and hated perhaps second only to Malcom X for challenging the status quo. He called out the US gov’t for its war-mongering ways. Hillary referred to Dr. Wright’s sermon as hate speech. Well he basically said the same things MLK was saying until he was shot [minus the AIDS references but that's only because it's been 40 years]. People allow the media to inform their way of thinking. Google the newspapers and magazines from back then: the Washington Post, Newsweek and Time. MLK was called un-American, a Communist and how he’d set back the movement because he moved from speaking about ‘the Negros’ to economic disparity and opposed Vietnam. We’ve got some serious revisionist history going on here. It’s deja vu all over again. Perhaps Obama truly thinks some people are stuck in the past and things are better, but it’s only gotten better for a few and by a certain percentage. In many ways things are worse now. Jim Crow isn’t about not being able to drink from a particular water fountain; now it’s about reverse-discrimination. Then it was about white male privilege; now it still is but quite a few people who were marginalized have now been allowed to sit at that table and actively contribute in selling out their own. [White] women were added to the Affirmative Action laws and have most benefitted yet the argument against it always focuses on Black people ‘getting over’ and being provided an advantage they didn’t earn. I don’t respect Dr. Rice’s choices politically at all, but I liked how she framed her discussion in referencing Blacks as a founding population. That’s exactly who were are and we should tout it. She has spoken about race relations before but not in this depth and due to the current political climate this message is resonating with many people.

Agree with #51, however the whole criticizing Hillary as a fraud in her respect for MLK is unfair. Hillary has looked up to black leaders since she was young. She is not a racist of any kind nor does she look down upon blacks. She’s simply being a politician and they’re all full of it, if you ask me. The Mark Penn thing does sound interesting though. I’ll have to check up on that personally. Thought he fully resigned….

Just because she supposedly supported Goldwater doesn’t necessarily mean she was against King. You don’t always have to agree full on with your candidate of choice. But that whole “threw my backpack against the wall” speech? Irascible. Sure she was probably disappointed that day about MLKs assassination, but could she at least tell the tale in a more reasonable manner other than one which forces us to suspect it implausible?

Dr. Wright’s sermon was out of place for this time period. It would have worked better in MLK’s period. Although Wright had major MAJOR points in speech and I agree with his statements, I still think they could have been said more tastefully. They were also taken way out of context to the point where white Americans can now use it against Obama.

@40

LOL! I don’t need Prozac, and I don’t buy into the hatred motto. I for one love my black people no matter what. It’s just that I’m a realist and I go by what I see and hear. All of the racist comments and blatant racist activity is just so sad. It’s just all a bunch of foolishness.

@40

I know you heard about the black nascar driver getting booed in Spain. I know you heard about the girl who was tortured by those white people, and I know you heard about the black student killed in LA for no reason. Blatant Racism! You see how they’ll go all out for missing white people and missing black people barely make the news. And please tell me you heard about the senator who got away with rape and murder. If he was black, you know that would have killed him quickly.

I wasn’t talking about tax returns, but uh ok lol

Who released 30 years of tax returns you can’t be talking about Hillary Clinton because to my knowledge she has only released the 2000-2006 and that took forever. I have not got down to the nitty gritty of things but I am a radio/television broadcast major and the first thing we learned in one of my classes was when someone leaks or makes available information they don’t want to catch flack for, they drop it off at 4 or 5 pm going into the weekend hoping that it won’t catch much attention because know one really pays attention to the news on the the weekends and the major pundits have already gone home for the day.

Hillary is not all she cracks up to be.

Sorry for the typo’s I’m late to class.

51. Perhaps you should do some more research on Barry Goldwater. Hillary was a registered Republican, a Goldwater girl and actively supporting his campaign. I don’t know about you but if I have a choice of candidates to donate my time and money to I usually pick someone whose policies I agree with. Otherwise I’d be stumping for McCain right now - since according to you it doesn’t quite matter. I know that you are a HRC supporter so you don’t really want to hear my critique regardless. I should add that compared to other right wingnuts Goldwater would probably be thought of as a moderate though he was dubbed Mr. Conservative. Hillary switched to the Democratic party after Nixon won the nomination and of course she had met Bill by that time and the rest is history. Also I should mention Hillary has been trying to claim disinterest in NAFTA yet Mark Penn AND Howard Wolfson have current active relationships with companies that are negotiating a trade deal with Columbia. So back to that whole candidate supporting issue I’d ask why support a candidate that talks about making fair trade agreements for workers in the US who is involved in negotiating expanding NAFTA to Columbia which would take more jobs away or prevent them from being available? One of the reasons President Hugo Chavez is considered unfavorable to the US is because he vehemently opposed a NAFTA expansion to Venezuela. And remember President Sadam Hussein was a ‘friend’ to the US for years while he was murdering and terrorizing people but he did the bidding of the gov’t. It was once he was no longer useful and [in]famously tried to assassinate George Bush Sr. that he became an enemy.

I have personally read MLK’s speeches and can go through them line by line for comparison so trust me Dr. Wright has simply carried on the tradition as opposed to veering greatly away from it or saying something ‘original’ if you will. Only because the core problems that existed 40 years ago still exist today though some aspects are much better, others are much worse. The content of both men’s discussions about the state of Black people, the US gov’t violation of human rights and it’s aggression against other countries/it’s own population and other items ARE CURRENT. Drugs being imported into this country, drug sentencing, the prison industrial complex, use of the media to limit the flow of information, the consolidation of media, allowing media companies to illegally spy on its citizens AND then trying to pass laws that let them off the hook from prosecution [FISA], lying about reasons to go to war, etc., this list could take me a year. Too many people have been complacent and were willing to ‘make a quick buck’ over securing real structural change. Also so many people have been killed [Malcolm, Martin, JFK, the Panthers]. At one time even the ‘average’ white young person got riled up enough against the gov’t to take action or ams [SLA, etc]. People were tired of status quo and perhaps violence wasn’t the best means to get the gov’t to change but people went for broke. I’m just glad we have the internet and blogs and a place where people can come together from around the world to exchange information and have discussions even if we don’t agree. Censorship and limited access are a means of control and we should definitely be on the lookout for it, watch the candidates and find out who’s behind the curtain and what their other relationships involve as it pertains to our lives and the world at large.
