POLITICAL ROUND UP: OBAMA UNDER FIRE / BUSH’S APPROVAL REACHES NEW LOW

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

A few days ago, Sen. Barack Obama spoke about frustrations that working people in the U.S. are feeling and said:

“It’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

Since then, he has fought accusations from Sens. Hillary Clinton and John McCain that he is an “elitist and out of touch”. Clinton released an ad Monday featuring reactions of her Pennsylvania supporters who say they were “insulted” by Obama’s recent comments.

On Saturday, Obama explained his remarks:

“I said something that everybody knows is true, which is that there are a whole bunch of folks in small towns in Pennsylvania, in towns right here in Indiana…who are bitter.

They are angry. They feel like they’ve been left behind. That’s a natural, natural response.” [ Read the article in its entirety. ]

Obama also added, “I didn’t say it as well as I should have.” A recent Gallup poll shows he is virtually unaffected by the “bitter” controversy.

BUSH’S APPROVAL REACHES NEW LOW

(Photo: Larry Downing/Reuters)

A Gallup poll shows President George W. Bush’s approval rating has dropped to 28 percent. Bush’s low rating in the current poll is the result of an extraordinarily low average approval rating from Democrats, a low level of support from independents, and support from just two-thirds of his base of Republicans.

The recent poll marks the lowest rating of his administration and in related news, 81 percent in a recent poll say the nation is headed on wrong track.

Why are ppl trying to nit-pick every single thing that this man does. But they tend to sweep what is said about him into the fireplace.

Bush’s new song should be the hook from “The Cha Cha slide” - ‘How low can you go? Can you go down low, all the way to the flo’?”

He should be unaffected by the “controversy”, the media has been out to get him since they were made fun of for being ” In Love” with him. And what is so wrong with being elite? If he wasnt better than the average person, then why would he run for president?

Barack is going to have to be more careful. Every since the media was teased about being too easy on him, they have been picking at everything he says and does. Since they couldn’t find anything of substance to use against him, now they will look for “little” things to try to bring him down. He has to remember that even though he is ahead in delegates…he is STILL the underdog.

And it’s funny to me how people are sooooooooo outraged and insulted over his “bitter” comments, but I didn’t see this level of anger over Hilary’s blatant outright lies about her time in Bosnia.

People may not have liked what Obama said, but is there any validity to what he said? Is it the truth?

What’s interesting to me is that an ELITIST is defined as “leadership or rule by an elite”; Senator Obama openly discussed only recently paying off his student loans while Hillary Clinton and Bill collectively are worth over 100 million… UM, WHO WOULD BE CONSIDERED THE “ELITE” here???

Also, why is this such an issue yet Hillary BLATANTLY LIED ABOUT BEING IN THE LINE OF SOME IMAGINARY FIRE in Bosnia… Obama may have given her azz the side-eye but he let her lying azz slide… She’s killing me with all of these TYPICAL “I’M WHITE WOMAN” TACTICS… I’ve lost total respect for her mud-slinging wig-crypt looking azz!

Why all the media frenzy, why don’t the media just post the entirety of what he said, why chose certain words and create a frenzy? He was only quoting what people in that small town feel like. Obama is the target for these reporters (opportunists).

Running for a political office can be such a lose lose situation! But I am really amazed by people who over scrutinize comments and words, twisting them and molding them into these vicious pictures they were never meant to be, for their own personal gain, and don’t do anything to be of any change to the screwed up situation we already have before us. I feel like everybody should step back and look at the big picture on this whole political race. A couple of lofty comments made by Obama vs. Obvious positive changes we have seen him make while he was senator; Hillary Clinton blowing up comments to 50 times what they are so she can put a commercial out that makes her look like a saint vs. She hasn’t done a dern thing for NY while she was their governor, and she won’t be running the White house, Bill will. And let us not forget her recent “image change”. Now she is down for the gun slingers and she can drink with the best of them… Is that REALLY you Hillary? I think that might be a phony…; McCain trying to flip his entire image around while these two squabble over pointless ish, he shows up in Memphis at the Dr. Martin Luther King celebration vs. Wasn’t he against there even being a King holiday?… Concentrate on the issues and the important points people. Look at who, as senator, has made things happen, not who promises you a lot of claims now.

The comments made by Barack were pretty drastic: “they cling to guns or religion”. Perhaps what Barack was trying to do was add even more fuel to his red hot campaign. But statements like the ones he made recently on the campaign trail ought-not be said. Perhaps he thought that by saying such things his campaign would gain more attention. But instead, all it got was the wrong attention.

People say that they want uprightness and straight-forwardness, but that’s not always what they want. I recommend that during such high times of public scrutiny, Barack keep’s his statements strictly politically correct. After all he doesn’t need any extra attention from the American public because he already has it.

Obama is speaking truthfully and they want to tear him down in the media. It’s not working. People aren’t stupid. Well, the majority of people aren’t stupid. lol. Camp Hillary is trying to twist his words. We know what he was saying. Give me a break. I’m bitter, angry and fustrated at our economy, people losing their jobs and homes, gas prices, this war and more. Who wouldn’t be? Hillary and John McCain are indeed playing politics and it is going to backfire. They are the elitists who are ‘out of touch’.

Black folks, this is the big leagues. Don’t feel bad cause they pounced on Barack because he worded something improperly. This is no game for kids, this is how it’s done.
I am pissed about the Kentucky congressman who said the other day, “This boy doesn’t need his finger on the button.” He was speaking in reference to Obama becoming president, and having the “nuclear football” in that briefcase everywhere the president goes. Now that’s something to be pissed about.
Obama showed he can handle himself when he came right back at Clinton and McCain. He just shouldn’t have worded what he said the way he did. He was point on. It’s been rightwing politics for years to use guns, gays, immigrants, religion, etc., to divide people. They even got some of our black folks mad at gays and immimgrants, and they’ve used religion to do it.
That confounds me because, we have alot of gays in our communties,(in churches, some are the church leaders) and the southwestern section of the U.S. (Cali, Arizona, etc.,) was stolen from Mexico in a phony war. They are just taking it back, block by block.

I’m really beginning to like Hiallry less and less. She reaches for straws too much and she’s not a fair player. As for Barack, of course the media is going to try to tear the man apart. They’ve spent more time on this than they did on Hillary’s campaign contribution controversy. They even caught her on tape and still she thrives. WTF ever! They (the media and it’s propaganda) all need to Saddown!!

lol this is comedy how they pick certain words, but won’t play the whole conversation. What he is saying is true. Who are shooting up the school nowadays? People are getting tired and are definitely clinging. They talking about how America is about religion and how dare he talk about it, but it is the government who voted to take prayer out of schools. Anyways Obama will just keep getting stronger no matter what happens so I’m not worried.

Barack is still the golden boy of the media. Yeah, he slipped up in his wording…no one likes to be called bitter (especially if it might be true). Just like all political candidates he needs to watch what he says.

I’m tired of hearing about Hillary Clinton’s misspoken words.

I’m tired of hearing about John McCain’s misspoken words.

It’s about time for me to get tired of Obama’s misspoken words.

It’s all politics.

I’m still voting for Ralph Nader.

This is really funny, people want real changes in America but yet still they dont want toconfront the reality. Obama is speaking about the truth… he says their is violence in America, religious bigotry and people are against immigrants, HIS HE LYING? no actually the news reports on CNN and FOX actually proves what he is saying that poor people are killing each other all over America, is it that America dont want to hear about these bad things. What is elitist about speaking about Guns, religion and immigration and Hillary of all the pple should not be talking about Elitist, what with her Mils in the bank and her background of middle class existence.

The fact is Obama should not compromise who he is just to get in the white house, I believe he is real about what he believes and he should be nominate for that and not because he did not make up a lie about dodging bullets or breaking down in tears talking about its hard. If America cant appreciate a President who believes in change and will not be afraid to speak about the facts then admit that perhaps he offended some and then said on top of that he is not scared to own up to what he said then, YOU GUYS ARE NOT AS FORWARD THINKING AS I THOUGHT!!!!!!
vote Barack cant you all see he is on to something real?

yep, its obama`s turn now! the media has slowed down a little bit on clinton and obama should be ready to face the storms, worse if he looses pennsylvania
there is nothing wrong with being elitist but at least be honest about it, dont come in front of people and talk like you have their best interests at heart when you dont know they`re going through because eventually you didnt go through that
obama went to the most expensive private school in hawaii, then to columbia university and harvard, hmmm makes me wonder if he`s really in touch with small towns americans, this is exactly the type of arguments tavis smiley was trying to make when he said african-americans shouldnt just give their votes to obama because he`s black but really take time to examine him, we shall where this race leads us, as far as i`m concerned obama and clinton are both elitists

Hillary of ALL people can’t call anyone an ELITIST! Yes Barack probably shouldn’t have used the “religion and gun” reference but Americans are bitter! Gas is almost $4.00, unemployment claims are up, CRIME is up and there is NO END IN SIGHT TO THE WAR! Folks have plenty to be bitter about. I love how now alll of a sudden Hillary had to bring out her “redneck” side and talk about how her daddy would take her hunting! When has she ever talked about that??? The fact that Barack called her “Annie Oakley” just made it even funnier!!

It’s not at all surprising to me that Obama is taking a lot of heat. Let’s face it, being the president of the United States is one of the most covenant white male positions anyone can hold, so it’s a no-brainer that the media would want to discredit this man at every turn. Even if he blew his nose wrong, someone would bitch about that.

I just read that Bob Johnson is at his antics again. He can’t keep his big mouth shut about Obama, however, since he’s so aligned with the Clinton’s, he can’t see that Hillary is a big liar. Talk about not seeing the forrest for the trees.

I can’t see the number or the name, but this is for the person who
spoke about Barack’s background of Ivy League education. Yes,
Barack did go to expensive schools, but if you read his book
entire history, you will also see that there was a time that
he and his mother and sister, shuttled back and forth between
peoples house’s, lived of financial aid (his mother’s) and was
accustomed to living rather meagerly. He might be privilged, but
he does now what it means to go without.

LOL, now all of a sudden people don’t want to hear the truth now? It’s not like he lying.Everything is going up.More crimes.Jobs are going away overseas, more money being speant on the war, gas, before you know it more people are boung to lose their jobs-EX Delta Airlines bought American Airlines people are going broke!Either way, gas is going to reach $4.00 and I guess he still be lying then LOL.People just wait for things to happen and then before you know it, it be too late to even fix it.I guess I sit back and wait until the media finish riding this story like they dragged out Jeremiah Wright, this shit really needs to go away.Hilary just was waiting for that, waste no time releasing an ad.Well dirty politics has always been the game.

It’s the truth… plain and simple - the problem is that presidents and presidential candidates have always and are expected to paint a very rosy picture. They aren’t supposed to focus on the common folk - the real issue is that no other candidate is acknowledging the frustrations of the people.

#41 Lola, some media outlets continue to manipulate the truth. I heard the comparisons made by Chris Matthews, political pundit with his on show on NBC, time and time again: The Obamas reported $4million in income for 2007 compared to the Clintons $109million. Was he biased much? Clearly if you watch his show. In fairness to him when he first mentioned it, I believe he mentioned the years covered. But for subsequent references, he neglected to mention the comparison was one sided.

Bill Clinton earned a significant portion of the $109million by collecting on his book and on the huge lecture fees he drew.

Now here is where you have to wonder about fairness in covering the IRS tax return issue: The $109 mil is for 2000 thru 2007, eight years not one single year! They paid $33million in taxes and gave $10million to charity. So I ask, why would Mr. Matthews and others compare one year of income from the Obamas to eight years of that for the Clintons? Certain outlets treat us like mindless sheep in my opinion. I don’t like being manipulated, so I try to do my own research.
