POLITICAL ROUND UP: PA DEBATE & OBAMA BRUSHES OFF HILLARY / MICHELLE OBAMA ON ‘COLBERT REPORT’
Friday, April 18, 2008

Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama faced off one last time Wednesday night before the Pennsylvania Democratic Primary on Tuesday, April 22.
Obama spent much of the first half of the debate defending his words and associations with controversial figures:
“What’s important is to make sure that we don’t get so obsessed with gaffes that we lose sight of the fact that this is a defining moment in our history,” Obama said at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. “For us to be obsessed with this – these kinds of errors – I think is a mistake. And that’s not what our campaign has been about.”
Clinton mentioned several areas in which Obama would be vulnerable in a general election fight if he won the nomination. When asked if she believed he could beat Sen. John McCain, though, she answered, “Yes, yes, yes.” She added, “I think I can do a better job. Obviously. That’s why I’m here.” Obama responded to a similar question regarding Clinton, “Absolutely and I’ve said so before.”
Neither candidate, however, would commit when asked if they would take the other as their running mate should they win the nomination.
Both candidates pledged not to raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000 and said they would respond forcefully if Iran obtains nuclear weapons and uses them against Israel. Read the debate transcript in its entirety.
At a town hall meeting in North Carolina on Thursday, Sen. Obama told the audience that the 90-minute debate with Sen. Clinton exemplified the problems with Washington by not focusing on issues that matter and he brushed Clinton’s attacks off…literally.
MICHELLE OBAMA ON ‘COLBERT REPORT’
Michelle Obama sat down with Stephen Colbert Tuesday night and explained why women voters are turning to her husband.
“Many women like myself who are independent, strong, focused, who care about family values, who know that Barack is special, that he has something unique to offer the country, and that his perspective is really gonna change the lives of working women, he understands because he’s living with me.”
Obama also mentioned that she would not be making her own run for president someday: “One Obama in the White House will be enough,” adding, “For the eight years that Barack is going to be in the Oval Office, he’s going to change the face of this country.”

Obama is right. They’re trying to shift the focus instead of tackling the real issues of substance. Get off of it already. He misspoke. So what. At least he didn’t call poor people nappy headed hos!
It’s all a game though. I can’t call it but I just hope and pray McCain doesn’t win.

I think it’s absolutely ridiculous amd outrageous the way the press is going after Obama. Especially in the slimy, unethical way, the used that debate forum, to do so.
I mean..yes all candidates have to undergo a great deal of scrutiny, and have to be
asked the ‘tough question’, but when you’re actively trying to tear him down, or
tarnish his image in front of the American public, it crosses the line, and I’m fed up with it!!!
.I’ts just so sad, even in this day and age, how much more a Black person his held
to a higher, almost unreachable standard, contrary to his White counter-part.
Blacks have to constantly prove themselves, and be that much ‘better’.
…But I have faith in Barack, in the man, and his ablilities; And I say do what you do Barack, and brush the haters off!!!

It was nothing wrong with that debate. I mean what is he hiding??? If he really wanted to come out strong he should have answered the questions in a way to throw it back in the moderates faces, but he wants to feel like he was picked on. Yet, on those MSNBC and CNN debates Hillary was drilled much worse, but finally when someone challenges him he whines. I tell you this, he can’t “brush” off them republicans if he gets the nod. If he really wanted to “brush” off Hillary he should have closed the deal with TX and OH. But I don’t expect no one on here to look at the big picture, but just look at the surface and not dig deep to find out who this man really is.

Barack and Michelle…. they are like the breath of fresh air that
Americans are too lazy or stubborn to go outside and exhale.
He has always been about the issues, only stopping a few times
during this whole campaign to address sideline messes that have
been distracting from his overall message. He has been saying
stick to our platforms, our plans and our agendas…not the politics
behind the politics….even when Hillary was under fire for petty stuff.
He didn’t stop to ATTACK her….he kept his campaign moving. The
debate really was a sham and a shame and ABC, the moderators and
Hillary should really feel dirty right now….they were mud “rassalin’ ” and
Barack wouldn’t be pulled in. Yes he was a little rattled, but as he
showed in that video, he will continue to shake ‘em off and keep doing
what he has to do….focus on what is important for our country. He
keeps telling the truth, about race, about Iraq (everyone is saying that his
foreign policy plans are brilliant and our best bet…even republicans),
about blue collar workers (guns and religion), about race, about the
economy. America wants the truth, well he’s given it to ya. Obvisously,
“YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH” !

@#10
I disagree with your statement.IMO, the debate was obviously being used as a forum to “Obama Bash.” In ealier debates I don’t believe the media specifically went after Hills, rather they went after both of the candidates.I found it peculiar and very unprofessional the way Charles Gibson attacked Obama, cut him off several times mid-response and overall dismissed a good portion of Obama’s responses. I was disgusted to say the least at the brashness of those moderators. Barack stood there, the great man that we know him to be, and didn’t go tick for tack with Charles or Hillary. He simply stated the facts. And I have to agree with him, at this point in the race I done give a damn about the bashing and rhetoric! I just want the candidate with the best potential to run this country to win. Did anyone remember how they tried to question Obama’s ethics by linking him to a neighbor he had at the age of 8 years old that engaged in questionable acts. I thought that was ridiculous! How about the break right before the very end of the debate where they cut to commercial and came back on and brought some guy in that give a 30 second (literally)synopsis of the debate where he questioned Obama’s experience and ethics (mentioning nothing about the debate in general, but also mentioning nothing about Hills for that matter) then they cut right to another commercial before ending. What was that all about? That was not fair or objective!
To say the least that debate couldve and shouldve been moderated much better.
Obama wasn’t crying or whining about the fact that the debate centered on pessimism and negativity, he just stated the facts that people aren’t interested anymore in that.I remember watching a debate where Hillary outright told the moderators that they were favoring Obama.Anyway, I’m an Obama supporter, but a blind and deaf man could see the bad antics of that debate. Til November, I say, On with the race! Obama ‘08

Onemil02,
Please tell me you are joking. If any other the candidates has put their business out there its been Obama and trust at the end of the day he is still a black man to most Americans no matter how “biracial” his heritage. He is and always will be held to ridiuclously high standards by “them”. If he pees wrong he is attacked from all sides, with no mercy. The question is not what he is hiding , the question is why is Hillary continuing to lie, get caught and then pretend she misspoke, but no one else can. The woman is silly and wasting time on the campaign trail with her “Mad Margaret” routine. One thing I appreciate about this whole campaign is she and Bill have finally allowed African Americans that were their champions to see who they really were. I knew they were users/hustler/liars/closet racists all along and knew it was a matter of time that their true colors would come shining through( thanks Cyndi Lauper).
HRegarding the debate, even conservatives talked about how Hillary spent too much time on her attacks as opposed to talking about the real issues that everyone actually wanted to hear them debate. Obama tripped her up when he brought up all the negative press that was hurdled at her as first lady. She was shocked and could not even respond properly. Loved it.
She is negative and has nothing to say, but more negativity. She feeds into the stereotypes about women that we are emotional and love to attack others when challenged. She is an embarassment and is not fit to be a president of anything.

The debate should have focused SOLEY on the issues concerning America. Not about controversial shit like comments Obama made about PA residents and/or Mr. Wright. Vice versa with Hillary as well. I mean damn…could they have come up with better questions?
Damn shame.
I saw a lady with a bumper stick yesterday (yes totally random) which stated “ANYBODY BUT HILLARY”. I wanted to smack the taste out of her mouth. If democrats continue to stay divided like this, we will have MCCAIN as our president. If Obama doesn’t make it as a nominee in November I will vote for HILLARY, and if Hillary doesn’t make it CLEARLY I will vote for Obama because that’s who I’m behind anyway. But if we as Democrats continue to act ignorant and cry and bitch if ourcandidate doesn’t make it, THEN WE WILL BE DOOMED. And then I don’t want to hear ANYONE complaining about SHIT when McCain fucks us over just like Bush has.
That is all.

I know McCain is horrible, but I really think Hillary will be even worse and her personality throughout this campaign speaks volumes about how she will handle real issues with integrity, tenacity, respect and cooperation. ….She will not. She is nothing but part of 2 families that have ran this country for the past 20 years. Look where we are now. Its sure as hell time for real change.
I have to agree with the lady with the bumper sticker. The Dems that support her are no more interested in a cohesive party than anyone else so to hell with them and their win. Obama or bust.

@31 You said that they asked him legitimate questions that the American people wanted answered.
That is not true. Who wants to know about him wearing a flag pin? (which he wore a few days ago.. SMH) I would rather hear about what their plans are on trying to fix the economy… or the war, etc. And another thing.. Obama has stated that he’s intentionally going easy on Hillary. He even tried to help her out with that Bosnia ‘misspeak’ (lie) issue during the debate. She then turns around and attacks him. Gotta love her. Obama stated that he won’t be easy on the Republicans.

And the backlash thats going around the country against the deabte proves you wrong. It was obvious the moderators went harder at Barack than Hillary. Could be due to how lopsided Hillary feels the media is towards her or just because they felt it was the perfect time to attack. Who knows. Although I am a supporter of Barack, I did notice him fumble a few times, but he always brought it back to what’s important. Seriously, when questions from potiential voters about wearing an American flag pin on his lapel are brought up we need to refocus. I could wear a flag pin everyday but that doesn’t mean I should be president or have the ablity to run a country. Politicians and voters are always talking about giving the voter more credit and how intelligent they are…well voters stop falling for the smoke & mirrors

WHILE THE RICH GET TAX RELIEF. vanity of vanity “all is fair ” there is nothing new under the sun. barack to win is going to have to get GENERAL GEO. Sideline issues actually do matter in this campaign, if they didn’t matter then a Compassion Forum wouldn’t have been held for the candidates to explain their stances on issues besides the economy, Iraq, borders, etc. Hillary misspoke about her Bosnia trip and got grilled down…she apologized yet she’s still taking heat….no one complained about that. But when Obama ‘misspeaks’ during a comment about bitter citizens clinging to religion, then he’s being picked on and distracted from talking about ‘real’ issues.
I’m not a supporter of Hillary or Obama, but anyone with 2 eyes can see that Hillary has been bashed the most throughout the entire campaign, and now that Obama is getting a little mud thrown his way, people want to cry foul, that’s hilarious.

#59 I agree with you as well. Further more, it is important that we understand that is the way of politics. You can like who you like, but there are some realities that are inescapable. The presidential candidate will be scrutinized, sometimes even their family members are thrown in for good measure. In the last election, Bush’s drinking, partying ways in college no less, his grades in law school, his deferment from the active duty, his kids partying ways all were highlighted by media. Tipper Gore’s mental stability or at least the medication she was on was being highlighted in the medai. Remember when Bill Clinton was running for President and every misstep his brother made (drinking, business deals gone bust) was hung as an albatross around Bill Clinton’s neck. Wrong or right, Barack is now on the receiving end of what most before him and certainly Hillary has had to endure. Hillary has the unfortunate experience of having to tow the line for criticisms against her husband, what he said, what he did, etc.
Not to insult anyone here who believes Obama is being treated differently, but clearly he has been treated very well by us and the media for MOST of his run thus far. And yes, he has come under fire over the past couple of months over several things that are no different in my opinion than what others in a similar position have had to endure.
Finally, let’s think ahead. The Republicans have no allegiance to the Democratic candidates. If confirmed as the Dem candidate, the Reps will go after Barack and probably will not leave any pebble unturned. More will be revealed no matter how trivial and meaningless it may appear to be.

Thank you @63 Patience, what they’re doing to Obama they’ve done to all candidates, especially Hillary.
But its still wrong. I wish they would focus on the ISSUES, obama is WRIGHT about that one. (Pun intended). But yea, ABC was def kinda biased in that debate.
Frankly, i think Hillary would be way better than McCain. Can someone please tell me what is it thats so awful that the Clintons did during their time in office? So much that no one wants them over McCain? Shit, they stand for Democratic values, all bullshit aside. THey may still be and act like politicians ( cause i believe all politicans are full of shit, no one is excluded) but they will FIGHT for US.
It cant get any worse than Bush. Hillary knows that if she makes president and fucks it up by avoiding all the real issues, she’ll never be forgiven. She’ll be the most hated person so trust me when I say she will be a good president. Obama as well…
And i second what someone up there said, about history repeating itself. Everytime Republicans get in office they FUCK up the country to the point where only the rich prosper and everyone else suffers.
We need to eliminate the Republican party. Old rich white men passing on their corrupt values to the younger white generation.
