POLITICS: OBAMA IS OUTRAGED / WRIGHT DOING LITTLE GOOD / SHARPTON UPSET?
Tuesday, April 29, 2008
Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., spoke at a news conference in Winston-Salem, N.C., Tuesday, about the latest assertion by his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. “I am outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle that we saw yesterday,” Obama said and added that Wright’s comments do not accurately portray the perspective of the black church.
“Rev. Wright does not speak for me. He does not speak for our campaign. I cannot prevent him from continuing to make these outrageous remarks, but what I do want him to be very clear about, as well as all of you and the American people, is that when I say I find these comments appalling, I mean it. It contradicts everything that I’m about and who I am and anybody who has worked with me, who knows my life, who has read my books, who has seen what this campaign’s about, I think will understand that it is completely opposed to what I stand for and where I want to take this country.” [CLICK TO VIEW VIDEO]
WRIGHT DOING LITTLE GOOD
Jeremiah Wright may not be wrong, but a recent Associated Press-Ipsos poll suggests he is doing the Obama campaign little good regarding white voters.
On Monday, while speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, Wright said:
“This is not an attack on Jeremiah Wright. It has nothing to do with Senator Obama. It is an attack on the black church launched by people who know nothing about the African-American religious tradition.”
Wright shows little concern for how his comments (both past and present) may be affecting the presidential race and said Obama is distancing himself because of political motivations while he is trying to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord.
“If Sen. Obama did not say what he said, he would never get elected. Politicians say what they say and do what they do based on electability, based on sound bites, based on polls,” Wright said. “Preachers say what they say because they’re pastors, they have a different person to whom they’re accountable. Whether he gets elected or not, I’m still going to have to be answerable to God November 5th.”
On Tuesday’s Good Morning America, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich suggested that Wright may be deliberately trying to hurt Obama’s presidential bid. Gingrich said Wright “went out of his way to weaken Obama” and “I think Rev. Wright has a greater interest in his self-importance.”
SHARPTON UPSET

The New York Post is reporting that a source close to Al Sharpton says he is infuriated with Sen. Barack Obama, following the senator’s call for nonviolence in the aftermath of the Sean Bell verdict.
“[Obama] issues this statement and not a single rock had been thrown,” said a source. “How does the candidate of change ask people to accept a verdict that is unjust?”
The source said that during a “heated” phone call on Monday, Sharpton told Obama he was disappointed with his words when Obama said “resorting to violence to express displeasure is something that is completely unacceptable and counterproductive.”
The source said Sharpton had hoped Obama would “side with the Bell family” and not use it as an “opportunity to grandstand in front of white people.”
UPDATE
“Everything stated in the New York Post regarding yesterday’s conversation between Senator Obama and Reverend Sharpton is false, and is either a fabrication of the Post journalists who wrote the story or the supposed unnamed source for the story. In my view, there is a big difference between tabloid journalism and shoddy journalism. This story is clearly the latter and is unacceptable,” King said.

Would not vote for Obama. Just like Wright said, he is a politician and will say what he wants to get the vote and the public rallied behind him. They all will.

I am a Winston-Salem State Student and the buzz is bananas around here.
Anyway, for people who might know what Reverend Wright said, I was listening on the Michael Baisden show earlier and apparently Reverend Wright said some things like the government being related to AIDS and some other things about terrorism… the point I’m making is, Reverend Wright said some things that have definitely been speculated before. I just wonder if Obama REALLY doesn’t believe any of it like he is claiming or is he just trying to keep the peace. Either way, I say go for it. I do think that Reverend Wright is out of line though. I mean I’m all for freedom of speech, but why would you say things like that, that you KNOW the general (white) public would fins appalling. Obama is trying to appeal to EVERYONE… I hope this doesn’t tremendously damage his campaign. It seems like Revvy Rev is out for some personal gain though. Obama mentioned many times that he was trying to “take the stage”… I wonder what this will do to their relationship or if the Reverend understands that Obama is just trying to clean up this mess he has caused.
Let me just apologize now for any typos, I’m not going to edit and post another one.

Al Sharpton needs to sit his over processed head down somewhere.!!!!!..God forgive me, but Jessie Jackson and him are media attention whores to the fullest….they only come out when there are “media-catching” events that affect Black folks to get attention! When do we ever hear of Al Sharpton educating the community year round (uniting Black churches and other people of color, etc.) and being in the media other than when it’s self serving to do so! I am tired of these Black Minsters, this includes Rev. Wright, speaking for the Black experience and for me!
None of these Rev’s speak for me, or for millions of Black folks! I live in Oakland, Ca. On International Blvd/ E.14st St here in Oakland it is the home of very famous African American Religious Leaders and churches, but yet International Blvd, for those who know Oakland, CA is the same as 42nd St (40 Duce) in NYC…You find the most hookers, drug dealers, shootings, killings and crime! Most of of these individuals on E 14th, most hookers who are now as young as 11 years old, are BLACK! WHERE IS THE BLACK CHURCHES THAT ARE ON THIS MAIN STREET! So don’t NO Rev speak about the “attack on the Black Church” for me or for anyone else for that matter!!!!
“The Black Church” has a lot of explaining to do…so for Rev Wright , Rev Jessie Jackson, and Rev Al Sharpton don’t speak for me! Until they can join together and unite Black churches to do more for their communities and to work together instead of tear each other down and to help uplift the Black communities to stop the “Michael Bell’s” from happening in the first place…..They all have a greater judge than I to answer to and his name is….GOD!
MLK would be ashamed to see the dysfunctionalism and divide amongst these so called “Men of God” and leaders who are tearing apart the Black community and not uniting them! SIT UR BEHIND DOWN SOMEWHERE AL!–We all need to pray my people! Obama simply was saying to not resort to violence…..and of course Rev Sharpton is riding on the band wagon along with Rev Wright and Rev Dr. Barbara Reynolds! SMH!!!

This is a game right? Al Sharpton, are you crazy. Martin Luther King Jr. called for nonviolence. Nonviolence is what we need, this is just sad. You can not go around looting and burning up your own stuff. You have to create SYSTEMATIC change. You HAVE to be apart of the system before you change it. Boy I tell you, I knew it wouldn’t be long before Obama became the tragic mulatto-everybody starts beating up the damn man. I’m still with him though. At the end of the day he is the best candidate, and I will vote for no other.
This too shall pass……

I think Reverend Wright and Al Sharpton are both intelligent individuals..With that said I wonder what possessed them to make these speeches. They should understand American Politics enough to know that remarks like these will only hurt Obama’s chances of being president. If they were real supporters of change they would withhold their opinions until after the election. Honestly, because of their recent actions I don’t see Sharpton or Rev. Wright as a real representative for the black community. I do see the importance of the subjects in which they speak of but it seems to me that they need the attention. Otherwise, they’d listen to that inner voice that tells them that Obama is our only hope right now and that we need him in office in order for our voice to be heard. Why try to shoot that possibility down b4 he gets in office? Some ppl just will never get it….We already have Fox News and everybody else trying to destroy his image and now we have our own ppl doing the same. I just don’t get ppl….They complain about everything and turn around and destroy any possibility that could spark positive change…that’s why ppl say our problems are self inflicted.

If he prevails, he will be looked at as Proof that we can succeed.

Wow men educate yourself whats more important. violence or being behind the first black president? But in your case you may not wont that because that dream of yours is far from YOUR reality…..

I don’t understand how Al Sharpton can try to tear down Obama but yet in March he was on his side. He is always quick to say he wants to lift up the black community but at the same time he is acting like a crab in a bucket. Not cool… And so what Obama doesn’t agree with tearing up a community I don’t either. No one agrees with the verdict but why would you want to tear up where you live. That type of violence will solve nothing, it will only hurt more innocent people.

J. Dakar didnt post the whole Obama/Shawn Bell quote.
Obama also said “The judge has made his ruling, and we’re a nation of laws, so we respect the verdict that came down.”
And thats what Sharpton was responding to…not the violence part. I dont think anyone wants anymore violence. I think Al Sharpton was looking for Obama to say, “Justice wasnt served in the Shawn Bell case”, but instead Obama gave a predictable politician answer. I was expecting a better answer as well…..since he is the leading democratic nominee and one of us black folk.
But I guess you cant get everything you want…..

So people say that other leaders need to step up to the spotlight…A lot of people dislike Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Rev Wright, Creflo Dollar, Bill Cosby, TD Jakes and even Oprah…
So what type of people do you like? I’m just curious concrete loop…who are some examples of good leaders? Because people seem to knock anyone that steps to the forefront…
Even Jay Z said that yall got him confused (in his song called ignorant sh*t). When we put down everyone that steps to the spotlight…it makes more and more people just focus on businesses that bring in the money. Why not make a crappy album like Soulja Boy or Dem Franchise Boyz if you will receive more money and less scrutiny?
This isnt limited to black people…white people have the same problem. When a holistic doctor tells a white cancer patient that he can cure her cancer with herbs and a proper diet…that patient will respond by saying “no you cant, there is no cure for cancer, I am leaving.”
So what’s da deal? What or who do you want if anyone at all?

Ok People,
39 comments I’ve read and NOT ONE that even SPECULATES that this is part of the master plan between two HIGHLY INTELLIGENT BROTHERS. Not to put down anyone, but perhaps you should check out some other sites like Realclearpolitics or Huffingtonpost, or even some of the more conservative sites (just to see what dems are up against) where the ideas are varied and flowing. 39 Comments and not one person has even hinted that we all KNOW that Obama had to disengage from Wright, and this gave him the perfect opportunity to do so–and decisively– before two more big primaries. If you watch closely, neither man put down the other MAN personally–it all had to do with ideas not being aligned. (Granted, Obama did say that he felt disrespected, but he’s got to be as realistic as possible to the main stream media). By tomorrow, those sites I mentioned will probably have 3 to4 articles each dedicated to how Wright and Obama are in cahoots to get the REV Wright incident behind Obama. Come on, my people, open your minds, and realize that these brothas are used to dealing with predominately white owned media and are playing their game well–even to the detriment of some young Obama supporters not seeing the deeper meanings. Peace out ya’ll.

When will us African Americans stop shooting each other down before we can get somewhere, figuratively and literally? I dont even have time to start on how this kind of stuff goes on on our communities AND CHURHES.
Wright is an excellent preacher, I watched his whole NAACP speech, but I think he should have declined the invite if he had or has any kind of concern for Barack!
All Wright did was redirect bad press towards the Obama campaign while HILLARY CLINTON gets by with murder behind the shadow of foolishness. She should have at least publicly addressed the family, not just for their sake, but for the entire Black community that has to deal with that kind of injustice everyday.
And ANOTHER thing, Soledad Obrian got her wig twisted because she didn’t get Wright’s interview, CNN is wrong for pursuing this Pastor! Leave it alone.
AND as for Al Sharpton, he is another one that needs to get in Hillary’s behind for guiding her campaign away from Sean Bell!

I think there is some confusion over the Al Sharpton issue. Sharpton is NOT trying to tear down Obama. Sharpton does not want any violence and looting. New Yorkers, black and white PEACEFULLY protested the Sean Bell verdict. I think Sharpton was insulted that it was expected that there would be VIOLENT protest, and that Obama did not address the miscarriage of justice in the Sean Bell verdict. Let’s face it, love it or hate it, Obama is a politician. And he’s not going to get in the white house screaming black power. This is a white country. I do not expect some type of revolution to occur in America, regarding black people, if Obama becomes president. I do however, think he’d be a good president.

And to think we actually had a chance to have a black president.
I saw Obama as a man who started out his campaign refusing to resort to foolish tactics. I still see him the same way.
I don’t know why this Reverend is speaking out the way he is, all of a sudden. He is coming across like a damn buffoon. And it sounds like he’s been bought.
I don’t know whether Clinton people or Republicans are behind this media blitz of Wright’s.
Whether that is the case or not, at this point it would not surprise me one bit.
It is really sad, for someone to try to have a seemingly honest presidential campaign, only to find out that maybe it isn’t possible.
And to find out that another “brother” could possibly be the reason for the demise.
Again, sad to say, not surprising.
On many occasions, Obama could’ve brought out the old Monica Lewinsky mess, the Whitewater scandal, the numerous Clinton shady dealings of the past. He could’ve capitalized on the “fake sniper fire incident”. So far, all I’ve seen is a person trying to run an honest campaign and rise above.
The Clintons have truly shown their asses since this whole thing began. I have lost all respect for Bill and Hillary.
She has the “I deserve this job” entitlement mentality. Now it seems like if she can’t have the job, no other Democrat will get it either in 2008.
McCain will become our next president, because Bill & Hillary Clinton have successfully managed to divide the Democratic party.
Time to get the “Thanks for nothing, Hillary” t-shirts printed.

But i think people are taking this quote out of hand…Sharpton was just talking about this issue in which he stated everything between him and Obama are good, it was just a misunderstanding between the two!
As far as this Rev. Wright situation…I’m totally disgusted by this man and his views! This is why their is so much racial hate going around today. Do i believe Obama has some of these same thoughts and views as Wright? Yes i do, because their is no way that you can be so closely associated with a person and not share some or most of the same views….the guy married him for Christ Sake! I believe that this is all planned out perfectly. Look at us (Black folks) tearing each other down, whatever chance we get. Black vs Black, people need to look at the foolishness thats going on. Why does Obama have to answer to Rev Sharpton, not even the current president acknowledges Sharpton. Obama needs to nix off Wright, he should of done this from the beginning-stop giving people the benefit of the doubt. When you (Obama) become president just realize you can’t solve all problems just the broad concerns that effects monetary and fiscal policy of the USA, the president can’t be a savior to everyone. Obama do you forget these damn crabs at the bottom of the barrel.

#50, how could this be too big a risk, when the situation with Wright is just not going away? They’re been talking about it for over a month now, and they don’t ever discuss McCain’s association with Rev Hagee. I personally think that since one of the main weaknesses most Dems think Obama has is that he has not come out strong enough. This was the perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Totally denounce the Rev, and be seen as very strong and commanding on an issue. We don’t know if these two guys are still really friends–i kinda believe they might be. Are we saying that we don’t even SUSPECT that they could be so politically agile to ‘give the people (and the media) what they want? Now, the problem is going to be “why did it take so long for Obama to disavow the Rev?” There will always be something, so we gotta play their game.

Reverend Wright did not make Barack Obama black. He didnt make some white people racist. And he is not going to win or lose this election for Barack Obama.
Every pundit/analyst and they momma is on CNN, MSNBC and the likes talking about how Reverend Wright is ruining the chances for black america’s best chance at the presidency. I am a Barack Obama supporter and I commended him early on for being able to appear TRANSPARENT. He was neither black nor white. Just a inspirational OTHER. But everyone knew that sooner or later someone was going to pull of his cloak and ABRA KADABRA a black man was going to be hiding behind him. The only reason Barack is going through all of this now is because he has become MORE BLACK in the eys of the pundits and the electorates. And im sorry but Reverend Wright is not to blame. Any 5 year old can tell that Barack Obama is Barack Obam and The Reverend Wright is The Reverend Wright. They are not the same man. They are not one in the same. They are not the holy duo. Two different men with two different messages. I dont make apologies for people who cant tell the difference. If Barack loses this because people found him guilty by association then who cares?
And I have lost respect for Roland Martin. He is on CNN damn near about to cry because he found Reverend Wrights answers at the NATIONAL PRESS CLUB sooooooo “offensive” saying Wright was cooning up, being flippant, and showing out lol. Im sorry but The Reverend Wright acts like most of the black men that I know. Thats the problem with blacks we dont have a standard for what being a CIVIL black is. First its being educated well yeah Wright is incredibly educated, then its being “real” and well Wright is REAL but now hes coming under fire for that.
WHAT IS BEING SUFFICIENTLY BLACK IN AMERICA?
Intelligent? Black Pride? Afrocentric? Ghetto?
They even saying the man is wrong for throwing up his que dawg signs.
The moral of the story: If people dont vote for Barack Obama because Reverend Wright has his OWN OPINIONS about things in the world. Then too bad. Their votes werent worth it anyway.

THIS IS SO SAD…..I HATE BLACK PEOPLE….
AND I AM BLACK!
BLACK PEOPLE LOVE TO HURT EACH OTHER. THAT SO -CALLED REVEREND IS HURTING, RUINING OBAMAS CAMPAIGN!!! UGH! IT IS SO SICKENING TO WATCH.
OBAMA SHOULD NOT EVEN REPLY TO ANY OF THESE BLACK RADICALS…NOT, WRIGHT, NOT SHAPTON, NOT ANY OF THEM….
THIS IS EXACTLY WHY BLACK PEOPLE WILL NEVER ADVANCE AS A RACE. THIS IS WHY ALL WHITE JOURNALIST AND NAYSAYERS HAVE TO DO IS LIGHT A FUSE UNDER A JEALOUS, IGNORANT BLACK PERSON, AND THEY WILL RUN WITH THE REST AND START TO FIGHT THEIR OWN!
REVEREND WRIGHT NEEDS TO JUST SHUT HIS MOUTH! HE SOUNDS SO IGNORANT AND HE DOES HAVE HIS OWN AGENDA IN THIS, AND HE SEEMS TO BE ACCOMPLISHING IT, MORE PEOPLE ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO HIM THEN OBAMAS CAMPAIGN.
OBAMA SHOULD NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THESE BLACK, IGNORANT RADICALS. WHY SHOULD HE SIDE WITH ANYONE? HE IS RUNNING FOR THE OFFICE OF WHITE HOUSE, HE ISNT TRYING TO WIN A SEAT IN THE BLACK CAUCUS. OBAMA NEEDS TO REALIZE HE DOES NOT OWE AN EXPLANATION TO BLACKS, HE IS HALF WHITE, AND THE WHITE SIDE IS PROVING TO BE THE BETTER SIDE OF HIM IN ALL REGARDS! UGH! DISGUSTING!
THIS IS WHY WHEN BLACK PEOPLE DO MAKE IT THEY DONT LOOK BACK TO HELP THEIR OWN, I UNDERSTAND NOW, THEY DONT WANT TO BE PULLED DOWN BY THE CRABS IN THE BARREL LOOKING UP TO THEM WITH THEIR GREEN EYES. I SURE IN HELL WILL NOT LOOK BACK EITHER!

Excellent Points…
He has to be able to stand strong — if these are the blows that can take him down, he stands no chance as President.
Take the blow, fall back, fall down if you must, but get up and fight back before the final bell rings.
It’s not over, it’s just beginning - people getting distracted.

FIRST OF ALL THE STORY ABOUT AL SHARPTON BEING ANGRY AT OBAMA IS FALSE! AL SHARPTON WAS ON CNN TONIGHT SAYING THAT HE RESPECTS OBAMA FOR STANDING UP AND SAYING THAT HE DISAGREES WITH JEREMIAH WRIGHT, AND THAT IT SHOWED STRENGTH.

You know….Black people are SO STUPID at times. Yes I’ve said it. Especially the dumb one’s sitting behind WHITE candidates like Hillary and John. PEOPLE…there is a BLACK(ok mixed), man running for PRESIDENT!!! now When doe’s that happen in our lifetime…uh NEVER!! This is a fine brotha, smart, great character, family oriented. Is he perfect? NO neither is any one else. But he’s not in jail, he’s not on drugs, he’s running for PRESIDENT. Why can’t we SMARTEN (is that really a word? ) up and BACK this man? Stupid Jeremiah is a HATER plain and simple! So true with so many blacks today. Some are hatin on me for typing this. PEOPLE, if we don’t smarten ourselves and our children, we are forever gonna be down. NO it’s not always the WHITE man bringing us down….it’s our own momma’s daddies and siblings. I say wake up because if you don’t have your own mind, someone will have one for you.

@ #54 I see your point.
I dont doubt these two are politically agile enough to make it appear to the media and us that his parting ways with Wright, while altogether still being friends, I think they are.
But I believe that the BEST thing for Barack’s camp at this moment would be for the this story to go away more quickly, instead of Barack denouncing him. Its to bad Barack has to cater to people who dont believe he’s his own man, but I guess he does if he wants to win. Everything fades into the backround at some point, for example Sean Bell disappearing from most news by Monday! I think this route prolonged that timeline which is going to cause more harm than good.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm, There is not enough space on this fucking page for me to discuss Jeremiah Wright AND Al Sharpton….. both are ministers so keep that in mind….. not sure what God they serve but the one I serve doesn’t seek the SPOTLIGHT at every twist and turn but I digress…..

People just need to shut up. Al Sharpton needs to shut up. Jeremiah Wright needs to shut up. Don’t these idiots realize that an amazing man, who happens to be Black, has a promising chance at being our next president and changing the despicable path we’ve been on over the last eight years? Why do they just want to bring him down? Black people get it together and quit bringing your brothers and sisters down.

I’m really sorry that I’m not articulating this a tad bit better…but I really wish both Sharpton and Wright would shut the hell up. Sometimes and again I say sometimes for both of them I am for the message, but not the messenger. The permed-hair, the soap-box preach tone, the rhyming, corny catch phrases it really distracts people, especially White people in seeing any validity in what they are saying. In the midst of Sharpton or Wright making a (rare) valid point, White folks aren’t even listening and still focused on the “I just don’t get why do they always have to rhyme” comment made 2 minutes prior.

XTAC, I wonder how many black people are like you, voting for Obama because he’s black. Yet you’re the first to cry racism when “da man” discriminates against you because you’re black? Hypocrite!

Rev. Wright is wrong…he messing it all up. He should have just kept his mouth closed. Hopefully America will be smart enough not to let his words change the perception of Obama as a man for change. Change his name to Rev. Wrong
Al Sharpton need to sit his ass down. I hope next time he’s getting a perm at the shop that the shop’s water gets cuts off for lack of payment.

lol I’m convinced not one person on here listened nor saw the speech Pastor Wright gave at the NAACP fundraiser. His ENTIRE MESSAGE was about how even though we all different and have different beliefs, that we need to look past those differences and come togher and unite for the betterment of all mankind. There was not ONE negative thing in his words. You all are all falling for the MSM’s trap. You know they wanted Martin Luther King jr to shut up. They wanted MAlcom to shut up. And the list goes on and on. Just like how you all are doing to Wright…is exactly what OUR OWN PEOPLE and even the DEMOCRATIC PARTY were doing to MLK. Telling him to “shut up and sit down” because he was speakin out on the injustices of this country and the veitnam war. Wright is saying the EXACT same things MLK was saying except it’s not Vietnam…it’s been replaced with Iraq. How much of Obama’s soul is he gonna have to sell to get into office? And wtf do you think is goin to really happen to the black majority once he’s in there? Do you honestly think he has some miracle cure that is going to make racism disappear? That all of a sudden blacks are going to become the supreme rulers of this land? Are you serious? Please wake the hell up people.

The problem with Jeremiah Wright is that he has forgotten that the the only person he needs to answer to is GOD, not the media, only to God. Unfortunetly I believe that Jeremiah Wright has made his ego rule him, he has forgotten that a man of God is to be humble, and to always seeks God’s, and only God’s approval in his words, and his deeds.
Like many pastors, priests, and ministers, after they have been preaching for a while, and getting a little fame, and accolade, they start to grow an ego, they start to believe their own hype, they forget that God calls for them to be humble, to serve him, to answer to him. Jeremiah Wright has forgotten this, he has no humility.

I think McCain is probably going to end up winning the election because the world is still too prejudice and racist to have a black man as president though he is giving a great campaign run. In addition, the world is to sexist to have a woman president. People would rather have a messed up country than to see change just because they don’t want a black man or a woman in the White House. I hope I get proved wrong but that’s just how I see it.

Cherishme (comment #2),
Who would you vote for, if not Obama? Based on your logic it would be hard to vote for someone who is not a politician, seeing as how only politicians run for office. Maybe it would be easier for you to point out which of the candidates is NOT a politician? Which candidate, in the history of all candidates would NOT say what they had to say to get elected?
Your thought process is a little troubling to say the least. I can only hope that you’ll re-think your comment and be sure that your contribution to the world of politics goes farther than posting half-thought-out ideas on gossip sites.

Would not vote for Obama. Just like Wright said, he is a politician and will say what he wants to get the vote and the public rallied behind him. They all will.
