SPRING FASHION PICKS: GLADIATOR SANDALS
Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Throw out those flip flops ladies, for this is the season of the GLADIATORS. This style has been on the scene for years now, but I have a feeling that we will see a lot more chicks strapping up their feet this summer (remember: pedicure required).
The ancient Roman shoe is dominating the shoe departments of some of our favorite stores these days. Styles range from the flat footed ankle strapped sandals to the knee length full out gladiators as seen above (and on Chanel and Balenciaga runways). Most recently, starlets Rihanna, Nicole Richie, and Solange were seen rocking the hot shoe trend.
Get your Spartacus on with these picks I found right online ranging from prices $17.99 to $800+

I used to be a fan of Gladiators (the show as well as the shoes) when I was a lil girl…………………..back in the 80’s when I had no sense of style and dress.
I can only pick out one pair that I even stopped to glance at, and that was the third pair, top row.
Other than that, they can keep those in ancient Rome where they belong.

I must agree the Azzedine Alaia stiletto is cute! I usually only like the knee length Balenciaga, but Chanel has some cute ones too. I can’t get into the flat versions.

The cutsey girl ones are cute…and right in my price range. And I agree @ 17, they’re really cute when someone actually has them on, but just looking at a display they’re not as cute.

That goes for flip flops, high heels, sneakers, church shoes, house shoes, socks, slide ins, slip ons, roller skates, boots, swim shoes, and so on and so forth.

Even though this trend may be “old” I remember when celebs like Nicole Richie and co. would be photographed wearing them (Caesar wore sandals like these, so Mischa Barton wearing them a year ago seems irrelevent to me, LoL), and I ALWAYS wanted a pair— however, they’ve never been affordable until now. I don’t mind picking up on something that is “old” per se… I mean, they weren’t as accessible then as they are now. I’m the kind of girl who doesn’t feel comfortable wearing heels, but I refuse to wear flip flops.
For me, they work, because if you do it right (like wearing a gold pair with a cute black dress), they can easily go from day shoes to night— and I can still be comfy without sacrificing my style. I don’t worry about being “out of season”— because it’s summer, it’s hot, and all I care about when I leave the house is that I look cute and that I will be able to walk around in whatever shoes I’m wearing all day.
I think when it comes to the sandals, just be creative with how you style it— think outside the box. Over here in VA, I HIGHLY doubt that someone is going to step to me and be like, “OMG, you’re out of style…” cuz then I’ll be like, “BIIIIIIIIITCH!!! Look at what the f*** you got on!!” LoL… jk.

Not a fan of the look. I will pass on this trend. Wont be caught dead in ‘em. Some people are trend hogs. Just because some fashion mag says they are hot, they will jump right on the bandwagon. If they had seen the shoes without it being on trend, they would have been like ewww and walked right out of the store. I still say ewww and I’m keeping it moving.

old as in they made a come back from the late 80’s early 90’s trend…. There are two cute pair the stiletto and heel, however I’m not into fads and trends. Nah, I wouldn’t purchase a pair at all. Some things I just like on other people…. this is one of those things…

oh yeah to all the ladies who are into fashion, I mean you live for fashion tell me this, is it ok not to really match nowadays, I mean when I look at these celebs alot of them are not matching, like Kelis, Teyana Taylor, I mean like is there a way to pull that off without looking like a tacky fool.

good question #44…i feel like matching belts, purses and shoes is very 1990s down south/New York (i’m from Oakland)-or church lady maybe…I think if the outfit’s coordinated well and you throw in a splash of color it makes the splash stand out even more. hot red shoes w/an all red fit washes out the hot red shoe. hot red shoes w/a black, gray, denim whatever fit, make sthe hot red shoes that much hotter. it works for me. same for hand bags, hats, scarfs, etc.

LOL! I purchased a pair of gladitor sandals in italy three years ago and I’m still rocking them. They look great during the summer! I don’t think they ever went of style! I’ve going on trips to europe since I was 19, and europeans always rock them! I will another pair for the day, maybe something colorful and cute! the problem with trends is that we wear it out so much that people will not be caught dead in them the next year! I’m going to keep on rocking my Glad sandals!

i have a pair…..
i generally hate flats but i wanted some comfortable and cute shoes for a recent trip. i kinda thought i needed a change from flip flops ya know! i like them and my feet ain’t small…i just copped ballerina flats as well because my feet were like you.can’t.wear.heels.all.the.time. i still prefer heels but flats are great esp. in the summer.
also..high-waisted jeans, bell bottoms, designer denim, asymmetrical haircuts…ain’t none of that new…it was all out and big in the 80’s baby…

Where was everybody last summer? Everyone here is speaking as though gladiator sandals weren’t hot then, too. I guess people who didn’t know that wouldn’t like this style. It’s not a “fad,” though; the shoe has been around for ages…literally, lol.

I already have 2 pairs and trying to convince myself not to get a high heeled pair. I wore them earlier this month with cute dresses and shorts while vacationing in the caribbean and will wear them next year too. To be fashionable is also to have your own style and wear styles that might have been hot/in last year the following year because you like it not because everyone else says so!

#45, it is def. ok to not match, lol. When I see people with matching belt, bag, and shoes, it makes me wanna gag. This may sound corny, but think of all the colors you see during seasons, throw them together, and you’ll be fine. I’ve always worn gladiators, so it’s funny to see that they are ‘hot’ now, lol.
