VIDEO: COTTON…WHAT?

Expressing sentiments following Sen. Barack Obama’s speech, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said last week the United States still has trouble dealing with race because of a national “birth defect” that denied black Americans the opportunities given to whites at the country’s very founding.

The video shows Lou Dobbs as he makes a Freudian slip while talking about Rice’s remarks on race.

  3. JSCENE

lol at that bastard wanting so much to say “cotton picking”…..LOL…..freudian slips are so funny to me. He caught himself quickly cause he didn’t want to catch a ass whoopin outside the studio. LOL

  4. Dr. Jay

I think he was about to use the term “cotton picking” and thought better of it before completing his thought. What exactly did Condoleeza say that he is responding to?

  5. Law&Order

Wow……. His true feelings were about to come out…..

  6. Brittney from Toronto

u know jesse jackson and his perm are gonna start a rally over this!!!!

  7. M.Klean

Wow, he better be glad he caught that.

  8. Jeremy

I DONT KNOW WHATS THE ISSUE ABOUT THE RACE. SO WHAT IF BLACK PEOPLE HAVE HIGHEST CRIME RATES IN USA. TALKIN ABOUT OWN RACE JUST PROVES YOU HAVE A ISSUE WITH YOUR SKIN COLOUR

  9. gg boo

you’re right they are funny – but i dont envy those commentators. i don’t like dobbs, but “cotton pickin” really wouldn’t have been meant in that context, but it’s just one of those terms people use in everyday language that was started long ago and shouldn’t have been, so it can’t be said on tv.

  10. i'm just here for the free food

    whoops!

  11. Keisha

makes no damn sense..why wont they just acknowledge it..

  12. MZZ_LIVI

    lmao @ 7….

I’m glad he caught himself. But we all knew what he was gon say, should have finished the sentence..he drew more attention to it, with the way he flenched.

  13. Ms. T.

Lou Dobbs is usually on point…he’s one of the only mainstream news people talking about the North American Union and the Amero… he started calling Bush on a lot of his shit way before some other people…but here now lately I’ve been looking at his show and it’s obvious that he has some type of bias against Obama…it’s little slight things that he will do..and he’s always talking about how Hillary should stay in til the convention (even though that might destory the party’s chances)…But for the most part Dobbs is alright….he probably has some type of predjudice…but then again who doesn’t.

  14. Have Not Thought of a New User Name

He is a raciest I watch CNN faithfully and it’s gotten to the point when Glenn Beck and Lou come on I change the channel. He was about to say cotton picking smh.

  15. Flygirl

Oh hell to the naw… I dont think he should have used cotton picking in that context. White people kill me when they talk about race they don’t see it as a problem because their white. It’s different in my eyes.

  16. 1234

He debunked everything he was trying to say when he slipped on “cotton……”….now how can we believe a word he says?

  17. Dame

    Lol at 7

Lou Dobbs tell us how u really feel?

  18. Have Not Thought of a New User Name

    @ # 7

Jessie dosn’t have a perm Al Sharpton dose.

  19. Flygirl

I know he didnt say it but he caught himself beforehand.

  20. Ya girl La'shonda

yup he was going to say “cotton picking” and THAT DEFEATS THE PURPOSE OF HIS ARGUMENT AND PROVES CONDOLEEZA RICE. Lou, people don’t take your comments on race out of context. Its simply that when people like yourself talk about race you attempt to do so in a seemingly neutral way YET YOUR TRUE FEELINGS ALWAYS SHOW.

And so what if America is racially diverse? That doesn’t prevent white America from being racist. SMH.

I am so over right wing, American Conservatism and their underlying (if not inherent) racism. It doesn’t surprise, shock or upset me anymore. I live in my own bubble where my children are safe, I have a good job with career prospects and I live in a good, black neighborhood. I mix with white people if and where I have to, if their nice then so am I but thats it. Call it pessimism but I am so over trying to convert the minds of those who wish to remain, prejudiced. You can never change the opinions of the Bill O-Reillys and Geraldine Ferraros of this world. As long as I’m permitted to vote, have a job, sit where I want on the bus and live my own little life, I will ask no more from them.

  21. Forget a FOOT…He put his entire leg in his mouth on that one…
L.Dobbs thoughts: “Cotton Picking…oooops, did I say that? Awh Well”

  22. Ya girl La'shonda

    *they’re

  23. Eve

@14 I agree with you… All people black white yellow or green have some type of prejudice. The difference is he’s in media and should be more bias in expressing his views. “Cotton picking”… thats old school boy

  24. FigureOfSpeech

He TO ME was using it as a figure of speech. I don’t think he was literally mean the whites politician were cotton picker. Hell, we all know white politician were not cotton pickers and neither were their ancestors. So moving on…

  25. Kaye

Now we all know he was about to say cotton pickin. However, instead and of talking about it on the CL,. I am about to e-mail the CNN studios.

  26. Floridaboy8703

Im the first to call for political correctness but I dont think he meant “cotton picking” in the sense that black people used cotton.

    Isnt “cotton picking an expression?
IE: She aint got no cotton picking business being the lead singer.
    or
He aint got no “cotton picking” business trying to decide who…..?

    Maybe its just me.

  27. Brittney from Toronto

oops lol i meant to say al sharpton then!!!
when does that man ignore a chance to call all blk ppl together and rally about something??

  28. FigureOfSpeech

CORRECTION: He TO ME was using it as a figure of speech. I don’t think he literally meant the whites politician were cotton picker. Hell, we all know white politician are not cotton pickers and neither were their ancestors. So moving on…

  29. okyes

number 15 i so agree with you i love cnn i dont watch fox but everytime dobbs and beck comes on i have to change the channel especially glen beck.

  30. Oh Hell No

I dont think that he was going to use the term “cotton picking” in a racist way. For example I can say: You get on my “cotton picking nerves. Instead of You get on my damn nerves. I think he was going to use it like an everyday statement, but realized if he’d said “cotton picking people” it would have sounded racist because just so happens he’s talking about a black person. He caught it before he let it slip cause he know Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would have been marching all over his ass!

  31. Sounds like he wanted to say “Cotton Picking Political Negros “!

  32. *KMS*

“Not another one of these cotton”.. what?? cotton pickers?? smdh….. whether a republican or democrate, as long as your black, white america will still be racist against you. It’s really sad.

  33. Ya girl La'shonda

‘cotton picking’ is a figure os speech that can be used by a white person to another white person. However the problem is he had Condoleeza Rice in mind as one of these “cotton….riddiculous politicians” who he feels attempt to be moderators on the issue of race. Thats the beauty of Freudian slips…they reveal the true human thought process:

    CONDOLEEZA RICE→BLACK→NEGRO→SLAVE→COTTON PICKER.

Sorry to break it down but this is what most white, American conservatives think as they encounter us on the street, on BET or wherever. Just replace the first name with your own. SMH.

  34. DROCK

When was the last time you heard someone white or black say cottin picking??? How did this phrase almost slip out of his mouth on national TV?? (and he knew it was wrong to say cause he try to clean it up)…Because he uses it on the REGULAR….

  35. Jermar

    I agree #21
that almost slip further proves/strengthens condeleeza’s point and completely renders Dobbs rant useless/void and just rhetoric to sound good

racism is engrained in America’s being, beneath the surface, even when they dont wanna be racist its still engrained, socialized and institutionalized into the very core of america

  36. Lori

He might as well have said cotton picking, we all know that’s what he was thinking.

  37. darkandbeautiful

I guess RACISM WILL always exist till Jesus comes then. SMH.

  38. JUDAH

Who cares that he was going to say “cotton-pickin’”? Big damn deal. It wasn’t even in a racial context. The real issue, as far as I see, is that he felt the need to stop himself which shows that the “diversity” of America that he claims to extol is hogwash. America is diverse like a zoo is diverse. All different types of animals of different sizes and types in cages of different sizes and types with the white man as the zookeeper. The other races are here for his exploitation, entertainment, and most importantly to be monitored.

  39. Ya girl La'shonda

Jermar said: “Racism is..still engrained, socialized and institutionalized into the very core of america”

CO-SIGN. Martin Luther King’s dream will never be realized (IMO). We might come close but never get there. This is not to put a downer on the likes of Obama who are trying to stimulate the necessary debate and make this country TRULY (not superficially) progressive and welcome in an era of genuine multi-racial acceptance.

But time and time again we hit the brick wall that is White America in all its various guises and with its far-reaching, pervasive and inherent racism. sigh.

lol @ DROCK: “he uses it on the REGULAR”-ain’t that the truth!

    DAMN 34!!!!!!!

  42. Pass me an Advil...NOW!!

i agree wit 31…he just thought better of his choice of words but with that being said..he completly contradicted himself lol

  43. j2

I dont think he meant cotton pickin in a racially negative way but it seems like the point he was trying to make was that we should be able to talk about race and not have to pick certain phrases to avoid being called a racist when doing so..but its funny why thats the same reason he tried to avoid saying “cotton picking”.

  44. Monique White

Ya, I think he was just using that term like, matter of factly…not in a racially slurred context.

    LOL

Jesse Jackson’s perm!!! I can just imagine his hair all flowy like Katt Williams’s hair..leading a march.

Shit, I would be RIGHT BEHIND HIM THOUGH!!! with a fresh perm.

  45. WHO HE THINK HE FOOLING????

Condi was absolutely right and why did he have to comment on what she said??? a bit dog will holler. Another thing who is the cottn-picking politician he was referring to Condi, very disrespectful Lou and wht is in you will come out, if it wasn’t in you it could not have slipped out. Another thing somebody needs to tell the truth if Obama was a white man then as the media calls them blue collar americans would not have a problem voting for him (middle and working class whites), yuo young people are dumb as hell if you belive Lou Dodds mess, we old schoolers know the language, white America for the most part want to see Obama fail, yes there are a lot of races living in this country but his country is very much so still racist towards blacks. Another black man was just released from prison fo rdoing 25 years for a crime he did not commit why was not Lou Dobbs speaking of that.
Lou Dobbs hate Obama with a passion and anyone who defends him that is why he attacked Condi. Let me tell you something Lou you folks are going tostart some shit we don’t have many blacks in public office of a high caliber and if you Cnn and Fox thinks we are going to keep putting up with your ish think again.
You owe Condi an apology, with your racist assssss.
Lou Dobbs you are clearly a racist!!!!!!!

  46. ms. complexity

He’s wrong. The most ethnically diverse nation on the planet is Canada. Get it right.

  47. Wth! That wasn’t even subtle, he knows why he caught himself quickly. Im not completely sure how he meant it but still….

    Lol @ #7

  48. THIS COUNTRY IS STILL VERY RACIST!!!

This country is still very racist and you and anyone else is a dam fool to think not and I agree Condi is right.
They talk down to us about it…and that is Obama’s problem a black man doing what white American said we should never do, you all better wake up and smell the coffee, look at our media, music industry and they are not going to use guns to hutr Obama and his family they are going to use Lou Dobbs, Cnn, Fox and I want to give Glenn Beck a soap box he looks like a maniac and his hate for Obama is so rel I believe if he could kill him he would. They hide behind freedom of speech.
Could you imagine what their meetings sre like I wish I was the fly on the wall, they probably saying go out there and give them niggersss hell for thinking this niggerrrr can be President, if Hillary can’t get it then we are going to doall to keep him form getting it and we got the uper hand we can use this network to do it and it ain’t a dam thing these niiiiiggers can do about it!!!!!!

  49. Justice66

    Where’s the news?

  50. CarmenJ

I had to stop watching Lou Dobbs, Wolf Blitzer, and CNN. He is racist. If he’s not talking about red China or closing the borders, he’s making other disgusting comments. Since the primary season, CNN has really gone downhill.

  51. DJ Mutha

If yall think he meant anything other that what he was referencing too…then yes..you are too sensitive…

    DJ MUTHA

  52. YELLA

IT COMES DOWN TO THE FAIRNESS OF BLACKS AGAINST WHITES! JUST BEING WHITE THEY HAVE ADVANTAGES. I SAW A WHITE AND BLACK SCHOOLS BEING COMPARED ON DATELINE THE BLACK HIGH SCHOOL DIDNT HAVE ENOUGH SEATS, SOME OF THE BOOKS TEN YEARS OLD ETC. OH AND I AGREE WITH CONDI

  53. HAAHAHAA!!!!

@24 i think your right and at this time i don’t think he was being racist. but let’s step back for a minute and at “ourselves”. we can’t be worrying and pointing the finger at white people calling them racist. what about us…….. to many times i come on this blog, and i read racist remarks about other races and OUR OWN RACE. as soon as our own skin tones comes into the equation there’s an uproar about it. we can’t talk about our own complexions without it getting nasty. and that’s really the sad part we want white people to open their minds yet we ourselves haven’t done so.

  54. HAAHAHAA!!!!

@48 if I’m not mistaken, it actually Brazil

  55. Guess who's coming to dinner

lol lol lol that was funny, he caught himself real quick. But the guy is right no one wants to talk about it. Not through the media at least. Condaleza is partialy right, blacks just need to stop chasing after the MTV dream. That is not reality.

  56. lea

I actually like Lou Dobbs! im hoping he was gonna the ol folks term of “cotton picking”which is used in place of such curse words like god damnit! but he probably caught himself because the issue was race and he knew al and jesse wouldve jumped on him like “white on rice”

  57. Effdat

ROTFLMAO!!! he was about to say COTTON PICKING! *dead* he woulda been in sooo much trouble! hahahhaha

  58. SassyT

I don’t know how many on CL have heard of Francis Cress Welsing. She has a lot of lectures on racism on Youtube. She really breaks it down for you and helps us understand the minds of racist America.
