FASHION ROUNDUP: BLACK MODELS IN VOGUE ITALIA / EVA PIGFORD FOR HAIR AD / H&M STORE OPENS IN ATL

00570m.jpgJourdann Dunn | Style.com

Its been a while since we’ve seen a ebony sista modeling on the cover of a fashion magazine. However, Italia Vogue is looking to change that – their July issue will have no white models and in-demand 17 yr. old model Jourdann Dunn will be the covergirl:

An industry source has confirmed to VOGUE.COM that the whisperers are accurate and that Steven Meisel has indeed shot an entire issue featuring black models, in a bid to encourage other magazines to diversify.

Naomi Campbell has always been outspoken about racism in fashion and 17-year-old Dunn, who was famously scouted in the Hammersmith branch of Primark in London, recently added her voice to the debate.

“London’s not a white city so why should all our castings be white? I go to castings and see several black and Asian girls, then I get to the show and look around and there’s just me and maybe one other coloured face,” she told the Evening Standard. “They just don’t get picked. I hope it’s because the designer just didn’t think they were good enough as a model but I don’t know.”

I look forward to this issue, and hopefully it will lead some type of change…

Good news for boys and girls in Atlanta, H&M has finally opened a store there! The new store is located at North Point Mall and opened last week on May 8th. The first 200 shoppers received gift cards valued between $10 and $250.

The Atlantic Station two-story location is on the way and you may want to get there early – the first 300 shoppers get gift cards worth up to $500.

Jena 6 is real racism. I see tons of black folks making stride in the fashion industry, there is not the wholesale “blacking-out” of our people that there used to be. We need to prepare ourselves to take advantage of the many opportunities at hand, and quit playing the victim all the damned time.
I’ve go friends of all races creeds and colors, and the one thing they’ll talk in common about to me is this: Why don’t your people force the issue, instead of bitching about it. I agree.
Even though we are the only people brought here in slavery, we’re not the only ones that have faced blatant discrimination in America. Look at the history of the Chinese, the Jews, the Irish, the Mexicans, the Indians(whose damned country it is anyway).
We need to get some backbone and quit whining, and those filthy rich churches need to take the lead. They need to do something constructive with those millions, beside feeding the homeless once a week. Tell ‘em, Cosby.

  2. hood_shit

Keep us posted on the magazine with the all black models…. that’s history so i need that… Collector’s Edition

Eva looks best with short hair

H&M just gettin to the A? They will do well there

  3. hazeleyes

People, I am a native New Yorker ( born and raised in Brooklyn) and I currently live in the ATL. H&M is nice, but please stop hyping it up to be the style guru of stores. It is a little cheap department store where you can get the latest looks. That’s it. I am sure H&M like any other store goes to areas where they think either have a population at a certain economic level or there are few other stores around like them.
Atlanta has enough stores, hell some of them closing down because there are too many already. Why you think T-boz put her boutique in Houston, Texas instead of in Atlanta? Personally, I don’t even see the need for H&M here. We’ve got enough el cheapo stores.

  4. GreatestLoveOfAll

THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS PREJUDICE TO ALL WOMEN OF COLOR IN GENERAL. I HOPE THINGS LIKE THIS OPEN PEOPLE’S EYES. I READ THAT ITS REAL BAD IN PLACES LIKE BRAZIL WHERE BLACK MODELS ARE SEVERELY UNDERREPRESENTED DESPITE THEIR HUGE PRESENCE THERE!!

THE UK WORSE THAN THE US FOR MODELS. OTHER THAN NAOMI THEY GOT NO-ONE ELSE.

  5. Kina

She is a pretty girl but the long weave makes her look old, keep it short.

  6. Grapefruit

LMAO @ Eva the Diva!!!!…. Jourdann Dunn is one beautiful girl!!!

  7. Liz

You know what, Eva looks ridiculous with that weave as do many other Black women who have this fake stuff in their hair. We talk about racism in modeling and vogue magazine but we’re the first to buy 2 feet long weave straight because WE BELIEVE that our own hair isn’t good enough. If we’re going to point racism out in the magazine, then let’s talk about the way that we internalize and then reproduce the very racism we complain about. It’s a shame. Eva is beautiful…we are beautiful without the weave.

  8. itzzzkimmm

Jourdanna is a FAB chick. She’s a gorgeous girl.

Wow @ Eva… it’s sad what these ANTM models have to resort to.

H&M!!! That is my favorite store… stylish, but affordable clothes… ya gotta love it!

  9. Emma V's Great-Grandaughter

Eva does not look right with long hair.

  10. kaykay

hazel eyes no one said h&m is the “style guru of stores.” but the clothes are stylish and cheap which makes it a great compliment to a stylish woman’s wardrobe. furthermore, H&Ms are in downtown, nice areas so i’m not sure where you were going w/the location piece. Ours in DC are down town near Gallery Place/Chinatown and in Georgetown…SF has one in Union Square, NY has one diagonal from that famous Macy’s, there’s a big ass nice one on the Magnificant Mile in Chicago…and I’m sure Atlanta like all other major metropolitan cities could use one too.

  11. Rikka

I am so excited about H&M in Atlanta. I went to the one in New York and fell in love with it!

  12. CARAMEL2

    @HAZELEYES
I totally agree with you. If you like H&M perfect. I would rather shop at a store that I can find quality clothes at a more expensive price and not have to worry about it being cheap. Who wants to dress like people in Milan, Japan or China anyway looking tight. I will stick to my NY swagger…I’m good.

  13. natural mystique

At this very momemt I’m sporting a fitted cowl neck top from H&M that I was drawn to because of it’s vibrant color.
After only one wear, it started to pill and now it sheds all over the place!
H&M clothes are cute, but also disposable after one wash.
Not worth the cheap price IMO.

  14. MzTrici

wonder why the hair pic eva did are so dark, how can you expect to really see the hair with black backgrounds? They should have lightened her hair or changed the background color. She looks beautiful though

  15. Miss Independent

Big ups to Italia Vogue!! I hope their efforst are pushed by other magazines…I like to see people in the industry actually being the change that they seek! Thats whats up! I may buy the issue via online, if I can?!

  16. TabbyTabby

H&M is just an upscale Rainbow shop. Their clothes are nice to look at, but they are cheap as hell. They bleed, tear and unravel. Don’t look to wear anything from H&M more than once. If you need a quick top for a night out, then H&M will have something for you. But if you have to buy quality pieces, skip this place.

  17. cakes

I don’t c the reason for modeling naked for wigs. Atl is not slow. They just aint in a rush 2 go nowhere. NYkers rush 2 the damn red light so please. Yall aint got nothin no one else has but Timbalands & weed. Every city copies the other ones style. Yall bite off people 2. Get real.

  18. TabbyTabby

Eva looks better with short hair. Weaves, wigs, extensions are all part of dressing up. I love being black. If your crown is tight, it doesn’t matter if it’s yours or not. People crack me up with that anti-weave talk. It’s all about dressing and accessorizing.

  19. Dev

Eva looks horrid! i saw her with a long weave in an Angie Stone video (i think) and she looked okay, here it’s just straight up Beyonce lace fronts that look funny

  20. CARAMEL2

. Timbalands & Weed..that’s funny. Stop watching the news booo!!!!

  21. MW09

Can’t wait for the Vogue Italia cover….it should be very beautiful seeing non-white models not only on a couple of pages……..

  22. linda

`THEY NEED TO PUT A H&M IN LAS VEGAS. THEY COULD STAND TO PUT A LOT OF SHIT IN LAS VEGAS BESIDES CASINOS, HOES AND CHEAP ASS WEDDINGS. EVA IS A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. BUT SHE LOOK A HOT ASS MESS WITH THAT LONG FAKE ASS HAIR. IF ANYONE LOOKS VERY BEAUTIFUL WITH SHORT HAIR SHE DOES. JUST KEEPN IT REAL.

  23. LoNdOn GaL

i hear wat jourdann is saying. in our country they dont tend to pay attention to us blacks. i mean why? london has gotten out of hand wit dividin out race between other races in london. london has more black and asian communties than there is white. i should no because i myself is black and has lived in rough and nice black neighbourhoods. hackney, plaistow, peckham etc.. black areas mainly ilford is an asian community.

    RACISM IS NEVA GONNA STOP!!!

  24. LoNdOn GaL

    dividin *our …………..

  25. Me

@ London Gurl-Yes London is a very diverse city but the majority of the population is not Black!!! Black people make up about 10% of its population. White makes up about 70%. Just wanted to correct u!
Its good that Vogue is FINALLY diversifying though.

  26. charlee

eve’s pic is BLAH!!!! even i cud have done that, no emothin nothing from the pic

H & M in atl= finally!! waiting for the one in atlantic station

  27. late @ Nite

    @ me
you are right generally there are more whites than blacks in london, but there are some distinct places particularly newham where the ethnic minorities outnumber the whites

i think jordan dunn is really pretty and hopefully she can help start the ball rolling
but there are alot of views to change from the gay fashion men prefering asexual white childlike features and bodies to the more womanly bodies of ethnic people, to the consumers of the magazines particularly rascist countries like russia that don’t want a black face on a cover, to the people who believe that lighter more european features are better than more dark ethnic looks

    there is alot to change

    from another lndn gyal

  28. peppychick

I will have to buy the Italia Vogue when it comes out. I would have thought ATL would have an H&M by now. The Mil was had two for at least four years now.

  29. Kayla

YA Eva, weave isnt for everyone ! stick to short!, soooo proud of the new vouge ( its about time) i enjoy it anyways but it will be good to switch the style up a lil ;0) lol.. mad naomi still uses the word ” coloured” but shes right… blacks have great skin! how dare these runway judges// but we’re on the rise anyways!!!! H&M in atl … who cares….. ! but intresting shoulda been there but ay cant knock em!

  30. cakes

@80 Well I don’t just watch the news I have been there several times & its Tims, weed, cold ass weather & mean people! Some o’ yall nice though but it aint no faster than any other city. Its just 2 many damn ppl that it looks fast. That’s why they so mean huh? Its crowded as all hell.

  31. Make ya say hmmmm...

@82 There is an H&M in Vegas in the mall right next to the Paris Casino (Miracle Mile ?) it’s small but its there

  32. QUEEN

    alright italia vogue!!!
WHOOP WHOOOOOOOOP to atl getting an h&m… you ATLians will looooooooooooove it!!! it’s one of the hottest stores out and the prices are great!!! i buy a lot of clothes from there!!! WHOOP WHOOOOOOOOOP ATL!!!

  33. Vida

YAY!! Right in my neighborhood. I am literally 3 minutes from this H&M woo woo!!

  34. a.k.a. new yorker

actually from what i read IMAN IS THE COVERGIRL FOR THE ISSUE not jourdan. i think jourdan is on the inside flap or something

anyway many italians tend to love dark skin so there will be dark-skinned models in the issue don’t worry lol

and to the person who said jourdan looks old, you have to take into account the fact that she’s wearing makeup and she’s extremelyyyy skinny so her face looks a little harder than other 17 yr olds. still very pretty girl

  35. Jashunta

Eva looks nice with or without the hair. She is beautiful. The hair looks good.

  36. TiffyT

After reading the comments on CL regarding the quality of clothes from H&M and Forever 21 I’m convinced that many of you don’t know how to care for your clothes. Sorry. I live in Atlanta and I’ve been shopping at Forever 21 for years. The majority of my clothes come from them and I have had only 2 issues with clothes in the past 7 years with them. I like many other people in Atlanta have been waiting for an H&M to open in Atlanta and when it did, I was there. While shopping I checked to see how the quality of the clothes were and I must say it looked even better than Forever 21. I haven’t had much problems with Forever 21 so I doubt I’ll have much with H&M. So my point is, take better care of your clothes. Also for the people who are saying that Atlanta is late for just now getting an H&M, your wrong. If it were up to us we would have been had one. H&M is late for just now having a store in Atlanta. But if you look into what H&M as a company, they are currently expanding A LOT and opening many new stores this year. H&M is currently in only 13 states so really they aren’t big in America yet. I wrote way too much, but I’m done.

  37. TiffyT

As for the Vogue story, congratulations to Jourdan Dunn. I thought Chanel Iman was supposed to be the next “ethnic” “it girl”.

  38. Miss. Tiandez Jones

do the damn thing black models!!! i dont find this dunn girl that pretty though, she looks sickly…but ye Naomi, now that beauty, even Eva is stellar. ANYWAYS, speaking of Eva, she looks real pretty here but she looks better with the short hair n copper highlights. Now that was fierce. WOWW h &m in atl, thats sooo late. Im in toronto, n we’ve been had h&m, its so played out now. (yawns),

  39. hellarandom00

That’s GREAT!! I will mos def be picking that one up and i dont even read vogue! :)

  40. COR BLIMEY

This is a LONG LONG LONG time coming. Im pleased that black models are finally getting the recognition that they deseverve, but one campaign isnt nearly enoug, we need to be on the same playing field as white models. Having the excuse that “black” doesnt sell is cr@p. It seems to sell very well when you want to take from our culture to use as inspiration and make money from it. B@tch Please!!!!

  41. Me

@ Late @ Nite- Oh yes, I know that there are lots of predominately Ethnic Minority Communities in London. Its like that here is Birmingham aswel (as in Birmingham, UK lol.) I wasnt disputing London Gals point of Black Communities being largely ignored in the UK either because unfortunately it is a sad, but true fact. Hopefully this will be a step in the right direction for Black and other Ethnic Beauty to be appreciated, not just in America but in European countries aswel. Nice 2 see so many Gurls from the UK on here btw! xx

  42. Brandon McClain

OMG Eva Pigford ( Marcille) looks soooooooo hott, she demands short or long hair she is perfect in everyway. It looks natural and looks way better than the girls that you can see their hair through the weave. All in all EVA looks beautiful.
    i love you baby
    Brandon

  43. DivaJonelle

Finally an H&M. I guess moving to Georgia from New york wasn’t such a bad idea then. All we need down here is a Canal street and I’ll be fine.

  45. Chic Noir

The Magazine July issue of Italien Vogue is 15.oo bucks(its an import so it’s more expensive). Iman will be on the cover.

  46. FallBackHaters

It’s about time that people (models) are recognised. I got to commend Italian Vogue for taking this step forward, especially in a predominately white country. I just hope this will now transcend into the UK and other parts of the world.

And congrats to my girl Jourdann…London all the way ;)

  47. phatkatabby

whateva!!! to all yall h&m haters… not everyone wants the expensive shit!! and fashion keeps changing so why buy the expensive stuff that will sit in he back of your closet the next ten years!!

  48. Seven

Europe is the bomb. Its more progressive over here in a lot of ways but we still got a long way to go. Take this edition of Vogue. Us Vogue would never do an edition like this. Anna Wntour would never allow it.

  49. Scorpiopooh19

I use to live in jersey about 15 minutes from ny city. So I was surrounded by H&M Stores. Now I live in the A and to be honest I wasnt even thinking about or searching for an H&M. I have a couple items from them like this army green dress that I have had for about 3 years. But H&M is not all that…I wasnt missing them at all. But I guess it will be nice for those who have never shopped there.

I hope this vogue issue will make some kind of impact but unfortunatly they might just do this to get it over with and go back to their old ways. Its sad that people only hold “white is right” when it comes to ideal beauty. Ive too have seen many darkskin and even darker skinned beauties just walking down the street, and their not models. I say if designers and magazines want to act this way, then we should just not buy their shit.

  54. Zoe

OMGEEEE…i know I’m OD late…but then again so is ATL…I’m sorry, but I just don’ think country towns such as “ATL” should have an H&M…I’m from NYC….and I’ve seen the damage some girls could do to H&M (not rocking it right)….SooOoOOo I can ONLY IMAGINE that it will be a TOTAL catastrophe for those country people!!!!…Leave these stores to the more fashion forward cities like NYC, and LA…smh =/

  55. amazonthe

I was recommended this web site by means of my cousin. I am now not certain whether or not this publish is written via him as nobody else recognize such distinctive approximately my difficulty. You are amazing! Thank you!
