FASHION ROUNDUP: BLACK MODELS IN VOGUE ITALIA / EVA PIGFORD FOR HAIR AD / H&M STORE OPENS IN ATL

Monday, May 12, 2008

00570m.jpgJourdann Dunn | Style.com

Its been a while since we’ve seen a ebony sista modeling on the cover of a fashion magazine. However, Italia Vogue is looking to change that - their July issue will have no white models and in-demand 17 yr. old model Jourdann Dunn will be the covergirl:

An industry source has confirmed to VOGUE.COM that the whisperers are accurate and that Steven Meisel has indeed shot an entire issue featuring black models, in a bid to encourage other magazines to diversify.

Naomi Campbell has always been outspoken about racism in fashion and 17-year-old Dunn, who was famously scouted in the Hammersmith branch of Primark in London, recently added her voice to the debate.

“London’s not a white city so why should all our castings be white? I go to castings and see several black and Asian girls, then I get to the show and look around and there’s just me and maybe one other coloured face,” she told the Evening Standard. “They just don’t get picked. I hope it’s because the designer just didn’t think they were good enough as a model but I don’t know.”
SOURCE

I look forward to this issue, and hopefully it will lead some type of change…

Good news for boys and girls in Atlanta, H&M has finally opened a store there! The new store is located at North Point Mall and opened last week on May 8th. The first 200 shoppers received gift cards valued between $10 and $250.

The Atlantic Station two-story location is on the way and you may want to get there early - the first 300 shoppers get gift cards worth up to $500.

That’s a good look for Italian Vogue. There are so many beautiful black women out there, and I’m not just referring to models. Walk down the street and it’s like, “Wow!” It’s about time, though, that they get their shine. Like you said, Tianna, hopefully this will lead to change.

ATL getting an H&M?? Careful with their clothes. They’re nice but careful when you wash them. There clothes are not the best quality at all!!!!!!!!!!

lol at 6 I know right? lol

Well I was fortunate enough to hear about this story with Dunn. She is absolutely beautiful. Yep Asain, Black, and Latino women are not getting any enough love from the fashion industry. These editorial magazines claim that they don’t put black women on the cover or feature them in the magazine because the majority of the population is of white people and putting too many black people on a cover will make it “too black” and they feel that their customers (white upper class women) won’t buy it. Many white women want to have a face that they can relate to just like Blacks, Asains, and Latinos. I’m black I can’t identify with a white woman’s beauty because she doesn’t look like me. I want to see more light skin to dark skin women featured on these covers because these magazines don’t realize that them catering to white women has led many damged self-esteems to other ethnic groups. But no need to fret people, Nina keita was the lead model in a Old Navy commericial that was awesome to see lol

It’s about time ATL got an H&M there. Me being a resident of ATL but a native of NY, I always said that ATL needed and H&M, b/c they always have some hot-ass gear at H & M. It’s about damn time.

It seems to have gotten worse off for Black models. Really, back in the late 80’s and 90’s we had Roshumba, Beverly Peele, Karen Alexander, Veronica Webb, Kara Young–all these wonderfully diverse and beautiful Black models!!
Who do we have now?
I refuse to buy Vogue, Bazaar, any of these downright racist White magazines anymore, unless of course a Black woman graces the cover.

I agree with #12…H&M’s knits (turtlenecks, sweaters) fall apart when you wash them. Don’t buy any knits from that store. Stick to cotton goods. The suits are ok too…I have 2 H&M suits that have lasted 4 years.

26.

That’s a good look for Italian Vogue, I hope its not a one time thing.

I do not like Eva with weave.

I am not really into H&M there clothes feel so cheap to me, but congrats to them putting a store in Atlanta maybe that will bring some new jobs to the area in this struggling economy.

Yep, we’re just now getting an H&M store here…well its in Alpharetta which is kind of far…but living in ATL you’re used to driving…totally can’t wait til the one in Atlantic Station opens…And I agree with #12….their clothes are cut but I see why theyre cheap. I bought a sweater from one in London and the freaking buttons came off in the wash!

Hmm, I might be picking up my first issue of a Vogue, just to peep out the photography.

Damn, I would’ve thought ATL would’ve had an H&M by now. They gave us one here in Michigan a while ago. I’m sure it’ll be better there, lol

Really Eva? Is this what you’re doing with your life nowadays? Bad weave advertisements?

OMG, my H&M stuff is a-okay…I just wore one of my fave sweaters yesterday…I bought it 2.5 if not 3 years ago from H&M…yall are prorably hard on your clothes, lol…no offense but women who are tough on shoes and clothes usually have technical difficulties w/ clothes but esp. cheap ones…now my sun glasses usually don’t last 2 summers but otherwise H&M’s quality is the bomb for the price…also a lot of cheap stuff needs to be drycleaned like expensive stuff-i definitely have expenisve clothes and accessories BUT i love H&M, FXXI and Iverson Mall (for all you DC/MD bloggers)…quit playin’!!

@ KAYKAY. I am not hard on my clothes. If you wash something you don’t expect all the buttons to be popped off. I bought two tops from H&M and when I went to wear them I noticed my arms felt cold. Guess what??? Where my elbows are were two giant holes. I made sure I washed my top on gentle cycle. These tops were not cheap in price either. Although there clothes are nice you should always look where there made.

@ Caramel2…I feel your pain. I tried on a cute pair of black leather pants at French Connection once and the zipper broke right there in the dressing room-I didn’t even get them on all the way, seam just dissapeared! I was just in my feelings regarding H&M, lol…to each there own. My most fashion forward friends-both who live in NY and boutique shop (one’s a buyer at Barneys) shop at H&M and FXXI (and Target-I can’t do Target tho b/c of the fits) & while I’m not the fashionistas they are, I do too…i know that sizing at cheap spots is the worst. I bought 2 Bitten tops (my first) & knew they didn’t fit right but bought them anyways and their just too tight, lol…they’re reall cute but I would have compromised on the cut and fit to go a size bigger so i can definitely see something busting if I got to hug someone in them, and I’m a month of pitty eating away from not even being able to wear FXXI’s clothes…

H&M is just coming to the South because it was an industry decision based on population and competition…not how slow a city or based on fashion reasons. I work at a design house. This type of thing is very common knowledge in the industry.

Furthermore, Atlanta is not trying to become NY. I live in LA now , but lived in the ATL for 10 years and lived 8 years in New York. The residents of Atlanta constantly brag about it having a small town feel with a splash of big city. No one in their right grown-up mind wants their city to become like New York. Sorry, but its not a good thing and I don’t blame them for taking their time to allow certain businesses to come into their city.

57.

CARAMEL2

Monday, May 12, 2008 /

@56
I think when the person mentioned that ATL wants to be like NY I think they were referring to NY’s fashion sense. NY has a unique style that has always been copied whether it is something as simple as white tees, tims and long shorts. I have yet to meet a brother that has moved from NY to another state that still doesn’t represent the style that NY’ers have. I am not talking about just white tees either. I have been stopped numerous times just at an airport and asked you are from NY aren’t you. It is a compliment but sometimes it is annoying.

With music from various parts of the US now dominating, I think the focus on NY being the fashion and cultural industry leader is somewhat passe’. People are now checking out the smaller spots for the real uniqueness. The fashion leader is Milan, Paris and Japan not NYC. NYC is just a good port to dump many of these fashions and trends that have been out in other countries for a while only because it has a larger population of diversity.

Jena 6 is real racism. I see tons of black folks making stride in the fashion industry, there is not the wholesale “blacking-out” of our people that there used to be. We need to prepare ourselves to take advantage of the many opportunities at hand, and quit playing the victim all the damned time.
I’ve go friends of all races creeds and colors, and the one thing they’ll talk in common about to me is this: Why don’t your people force the issue, instead of bitching about it. I agree.
Even though we are the only people brought here in slavery, we’re not the only ones that have faced blatant discrimination in America. Look at the history of the Chinese, the Jews, the Irish, the Mexicans, the Indians(whose damned country it is anyway).
We need to get some backbone and quit whining, and those filthy rich churches need to take the lead. They need to do something constructive with those millions, beside feeding the homeless once a week. Tell ‘em, Cosby.

People, I am a native New Yorker ( born and raised in Brooklyn) and I currently live in the ATL. H&M is nice, but please stop hyping it up to be the style guru of stores. It is a little cheap department store where you can get the latest looks. That’s it. I am sure H&M like any other store goes to areas where they think either have a population at a certain economic level or there are few other stores around like them.
Atlanta has enough stores, hell some of them closing down because there are too many already. Why you think T-boz put her boutique in Houston, Texas instead of in Atlanta? Personally, I don’t even see the need for H&M here. We’ve got enough el cheapo stores.

You know what, Eva looks ridiculous with that weave as do many other Black women who have this fake stuff in their hair. We talk about racism in modeling and vogue magazine but we’re the first to buy 2 feet long weave straight because WE BELIEVE that our own hair isn’t good enough. If we’re going to point racism out in the magazine, then let’s talk about the way that we internalize and then reproduce the very racism we complain about. It’s a shame. Eva is beautiful…we are beautiful without the weave.

hazel eyes no one said h&m is the “style guru of stores.” but the clothes are stylish and cheap which makes it a great compliment to a stylish woman’s wardrobe. furthermore, H&Ms are in downtown, nice areas so i’m not sure where you were going w/the location piece. Ours in DC are down town near Gallery Place/Chinatown and in Georgetown…SF has one in Union Square, NY has one diagonal from that famous Macy’s, there’s a big ass nice one on the Magnificant Mile in Chicago…and I’m sure Atlanta like all other major metropolitan cities could use one too.

H&M is just an upscale Rainbow shop. Their clothes are nice to look at, but they are cheap as hell. They bleed, tear and unravel. Don’t look to wear anything from H&M more than once. If you need a quick top for a night out, then H&M will have something for you. But if you have to buy quality pieces, skip this place.

but there are alot of views to change from the gay fashion men prefering asexual white childlike features and bodies to the more womanly bodies of ethnic people, to the consumers of the magazines particularly rascist countries like russia that don’t want a black face on a cover, to the people who believe that lighter more european features are better than more dark ethnic looks

there is alot to change

actually from what i read IMAN IS THE COVERGIRL FOR THE ISSUE not jourdan. i think jourdan is on the inside flap or something

anyway many italians tend to love dark skin so there will be dark-skinned models in the issue don’t worry lol

and to the person who said jourdan looks old, you have to take into account the fact that she’s wearing makeup and she’s extremelyyyy skinny so her face looks a little harder than other 17 yr olds. still very pretty girl

After reading the comments on CL regarding the quality of clothes from H&M and Forever 21 I’m convinced that many of you don’t know how to care for your clothes. Sorry. I live in Atlanta and I’ve been shopping at Forever 21 for years. The majority of my clothes come from them and I have had only 2 issues with clothes in the past 7 years with them. I like many other people in Atlanta have been waiting for an H&M to open in Atlanta and when it did, I was there. While shopping I checked to see how the quality of the clothes were and I must say it looked even better than Forever 21. I haven’t had much problems with Forever 21 so I doubt I’ll have much with H&M. So my point is, take better care of your clothes. Also for the people who are saying that Atlanta is late for just now getting an H&M, your wrong. If it were up to us we would have been had one. H&M is late for just now having a store in Atlanta. But if you look into what H&M as a company, they are currently expanding A LOT and opening many new stores this year. H&M is currently in only 13 states so really they aren’t big in America yet. I wrote way too much, but I’m done.

As for the Vogue story, congratulations to Jourdan Dunn. I thought Chanel Iman was supposed to be the next “ethnic” “it girl”.

do the damn thing black models!!! i dont find this dunn girl that pretty though, she looks sickly…but ye Naomi, now that beauty, even Eva is stellar. ANYWAYS, speaking of Eva, she looks real pretty here but she looks better with the short hair n copper highlights. Now that was fierce. WOWW h &m in atl, thats sooo late. Im in toronto, n we’ve been had h&m, its so played out now. (yawns),

This is a LONG LONG LONG time coming. Im pleased that black models are finally getting the recognition that they deseverve, but one campaign isnt nearly enoug, we need to be on the same playing field as white models. Having the excuse that “black” doesnt sell is cr@p. It seems to sell very well when you want to take from our culture to use as inspiration and make money from it. B@tch Please!!!!

@ Late @ Nite- Oh yes, I know that there are lots of predominately Ethnic Minority Communities in London. Its like that here is Birmingham aswel (as in Birmingham, UK lol.) I wasnt disputing London Gals point of Black Communities being largely ignored in the UK either because unfortunately it is a sad, but true fact. Hopefully this will be a step in the right direction for Black and other Ethnic Beauty to be appreciated, not just in America but in European countries aswel. Nice 2 see so many Gurls from the UK on here btw! xx

OMG Eva Pigford ( Marcille) looks soooooooo hott, she demands short or long hair she is perfect in everyway. It looks natural and looks way better than the girls that you can see their hair through the weave. All in all EVA looks beautiful.
i love you baby

Finally an H&M. I guess moving to Georgia from New york wasn’t such a bad idea then. All we need down here is a Canal street and I’ll be fine.

It’s about time that people (models) are recognised. I got to commend Italian Vogue for taking this step forward, especially in a predominately white country. I just hope this will now transcend into the UK and other parts of the world.

And congrats to my girl Jourdann…London all the way ;)

Europe is the bomb. Its more progressive over here in a lot of ways but we still got a long way to go. Take this edition of Vogue. Us Vogue would never do an edition like this. Anna Wntour would never allow it.

I use to live in jersey about 15 minutes from ny city. So I was surrounded by H&M Stores. Now I live in the A and to be honest I wasnt even thinking about or searching for an H&M. I have a couple items from them like this army green dress that I have had for about 3 years. But H&M is not all that…I wasnt missing them at all. But I guess it will be nice for those who have never shopped there.

I hope this vogue issue will make some kind of impact but unfortunatly they might just do this to get it over with and go back to their old ways. Its sad that people only hold “white is right” when it comes to ideal beauty. Ive too have seen many darkskin and even darker skinned beauties just walking down the street, and their not models. I say if designers and magazines want to act this way, then we should just not buy their shit.

OMGEEEE…i know I’m OD late…but then again so is ATL…I’m sorry, but I just don’ think country towns such as “ATL” should have an H&M…I’m from NYC….and I’ve seen the damage some girls could do to H&M (not rocking it right)….SooOoOOo I can ONLY IMAGINE that it will be a TOTAL catastrophe for those country people!!!!…Leave these stores to the more fashion forward cities like NYC, and LA…smh =/
