Meet Shanell. You may think that you don’t know Shanell, but if you’ve picked up Kelis’ last album, Kelis Was Here, or Danity Kane’s Welcome to the Dollhouse, you’re familiar with her music.
Appearing on Lil’ Wayne’s The Carter III, Shanell has shared studios, stages with some of the industry’s hugest heavyweights. Gathering her inspirations from the versatility of Madonna, the edginess Cyndi Lauper, the sultry sexiness of Vanity, the fun experimentation of Missy Elliott and TLC. “Night Shift” is a nod to the era of Prince and Vanity 6, where it was just safe enough to hit radio, but risque enough for parents to want kids to cover their ears.

Man I luv to see good people on the come up. I went to middle school and high school with Shanell and her currently more famous sister Wanita (D. Woods).
The songs pretty dope. Shes still lookin good too…me and my homies had crazy crushes on her back in the day lol.
It’s really club. Very Madonna influenced. I like it. I can’t say I wouldn’t dance to it if I were in the club. She’s very talented. She wrote “Key To My Heart” track 13 on Danity Kane’s (which her sister D.Woods happens to be a member of (notice the striking resemblance) “Welcome To The Dollhouse”. Shanell might have chance because the industry is loving dance music right now. Last year it was acoustics and now its dance-pop-club-international-techno stuff. Danity Kane’s “Damaged” Ne-Yo’s “Closer”, Chris Brown’s “Forever”, Madonna feat. Justin Timberlake & Timbaland “4 Minutes” and Lloyd feat. Ludacris “How We Do It” are very much dance inspired and go along with the new trend. Beyonce’s new song “Beautiful Nightmare” also is very dance. Her whole album is said to be dance. Shanell will have to stad out in order to shine. Now it’s about the looks, the voice and the moves. Hopefully Shanell has it like her sister!

There’s something about this song that I like, There’s something that I don’t like. I’m not really sure what it is. I think it’s the beat that makes me gravitate to it. I’d like to hear more stuff from her though. And yeah, I’m hip to her, she did co-wrote “Key To My Heart”, I think.
The song “Comeback”, on her myspace page reminds me of something from TLC, it’s kinda wierd though.

She was a backround dancer so she got the moves to be great. The song ain’t nothing special to me tho. Maybe with another song she might spark somebody intrest but for now she comes nowhere near the Britney’s, Her sister groups Danity Kane, or Rihanna. I don’t know.

I love me some Danity Kane, so I was already up on SNL and what she bringin’ to the industry. I gotta say, her voice don’t sound nothin’ like D’s, but she’s still talented and the song is hot.
She needs to get herself in the studio with Polow Da Don and Danja, 2 of the big international-techno-hip-hop-dance-pop producers of the minute.

I heart SNL. She’s very talented. I had heard the song awhile back and it had to grow on me. I am anticipating The Girls Club 2nd mixtape with her, D. Woods and Mika Means. The first one was off the chain… I’m still trying to figure out where to get it at. But I listen to the tracks online all the time.

I can’t find where it says Shanell intends for her music to sound like or even replace Vanity or Prince… Instead, it simply says that they are her influences, and that this track harkens back to a time when their sound was popular.

Not feeling it. Everyone who said her voice is flat is spot on, and i find the beat boring too. Wow. All the people diggin’ this song must be members of her fanclub or must’ve listened to this song without any sound on their computers. This song is pure garbage (not to be confused with unpure garbage). Not to sound like a hater, but where is the talent? And how many times can she say “She works the night shift” in 3 minutes and call it a song? I had to stop listening after I counted 543. LOL.First off, you definitely don’t want to say you had anything to do with Kelis’s last project b/c it was a hard flop.Second, she looks HUUUUUGE in that picture. Not a good look.
Overall, this track is bottom of the barrel. R&B music may not be the bizness right now, but that’s because everybody is just jumping from bandwagon to bandwagon and it’s all starting to sound the same. Why doesn’t somebody try to make a hit 1. Without T-Pain, 2. Without featuring Chris Brown, 3. Without using a recycled Stargate/Irrelplaceable beat, and 4. Without taking us to a euro dance club.
I’m diggin it! I’m a huge fan of 80′s dance, techno, pop etc. So this jawn fits right in that genre.
Also if im not mistaken, she wrote one of the toughest songs on DK’s album (in my opinion), KEY TO MY HEART! That song is mad crazy produced and written! love it!

This is not bad. I like her voice on it. I would like to hear more from her. I really like the “Key To My Heart” song she wrote for Danity Kane. “Night Shift” isnt a great attempt at a Prince/Vanity influenced song but I can hear where they are going with the concept. I think people will always get touchy when dropping the “nod to Prince/Vanity” tone out there.
Prince is coming out with a Vanityesque artist soon but with a different twist, stay tuned!

the simplicity of the lyrics is kinda wack. and the construction of the song is a little too simple. but the idea is hot. the track is hot. so this song fits in the middle 4 me.
