Again, you obviously know nothing about the show. If you did, you’d know they never ever ever ever concerned themselves with throwing “me” a bone. Ever. Blair Underwood was an interesting spin on “Miranda’s” story and it was more about exploring another sort of MAN (because the MEN were very objectified on the show). It had absolutely NOTHING to do with capturing the black audience. They didn’t have to…the series did phenomenally well with it’s intended audience. Now, as for the MOVIE. Perhaps, they did write in a black character to appeal to a certain demographic. That’s no big deal. That’s the movie bizz…ticket sales… (BTW, when I said the show ran counter to stereotypical notions of beauty, I didn’t mean to say anything about us/black people. My point was, believing the role was intended for a black woman, Jennifer would have been a choice consistent with the show’s iconoclasm). And, as far as them using Jennifer for the hype factor, OF COURSE THEY ARE. OF COURSE. Why exactly do you think Sarah Jessica Parker, herself, was given so much creative control over the series? Do you think they really believed her some genius thespian trailblazer or something? Nope. “Carrie” just got so popular that she was synonymous with “Sarah Jessica Parker” and they wanted that name splashed everywhere to make sure we stayed tuned. That’s the game, period… they capitalize off everybody’s popularity. So, of course Jennifer got the role because she was an Oscar winner. She means money.
As for her acting…have you ever seen the show? It doesn’t take much to act on that show… By that I mean, it doesn’t call for much. Cynthia Nixon is about the only one who was ever required to do a bit of serious acting. The personalities on SATC operated on such exaggerated kitschy levels that anyone with the ability to hold her eyes open for a minute or more would have faired quite nicely.
Ultimately, my point was this movie is not a big enough deal to go crying Jennifer’s to blame for the collapse of black Hollywood. It really isn’t. She looks great and I’m glad I’m going to be seeing her.

SITC got panned by critics, yet the faithfuls made it #1. Too bad they didn’t pick a better looking and equally talented black actress to play the part of Carrie’s assistant.
