After the first couple of seasons, as the show soared in popularity and the focus clearly shifted from “a girl and the city” to “a girl and her four friends” it really did become just a soso type thing. I am obsessed with fashion, though…so, I loved the series. But it did start out as a phenomenal show. It was gritty and dark and really indie looking. But by season 3 or so, it was just this light bright, darn near “Ugly Betty” kitschy sort of thing. Oh well, I’m still thinking of “dressing up” a la “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” fame to go and see it. Seriously!

Blair Underwood was an interesting spin on “Miranda’s” story and it was more about exploring another sort of MAN (because the MEN were very objectified on the show). It had absolutely NOTHING to do with capturing the black audience. They didn’t have to…the series did phenomenally well with it’s intended audience. Now, as for the MOVIE. Perhaps, they did write in a black character to appeal to a certain demographic. That’s no big deal. My point was, believing the role was intended for a black woman, Jennifer would have been a choice consistent with the show’s iconoclasm). And, as far as them using Jennifer for the hype factor, OF COURSE THEY ARE. OF COURSE. Why exactly do you think Sarah Jessica Parker, herself, was given so much creative control over the series? Do you think they really believed her some genius thespian trailblazer or something? Nope. “Carrie” just got so popular that she was synonymous with “Sarah Jessica Parker” and they wanted that name splashed everywhere to make sure we stayed tuned. That’s the game, period… they capitalize off everybody’s popularity. So, of course Jennifer got the role because she was an Oscar winner. She means money.
As for her acting…have you ever seen the show? It doesn’t take much to act on that show… By that I mean, it doesn’t call for much. Cynthia Nixon is about the only one who was ever required to do a bit of serious acting. The personalities on SATC operated on such exaggerated kitschy levels that anyone with the ability to hold her eyes open for a minute or more would have faired quite nicely.
Ultimately, my point was this movie is not a big enough deal to go crying Jennifer’s to blame for the collapse of black Hollywood. It really isn’t. She looks great and I’m glad I’m going to be seeing her.
