♫ NEW MUSIC FROM COMMON ♫
Thursday, May 22, 2008

Check out new music from Common and Pharrell Williams. This definitely wasn’t what I was expecting from Common, but I am definitely loving it. The song really makes you want to move. Common’s last album, Finding Forever garnered him a lot of mainstream success, boasting features with UK songstress Lily Allen, Will.I.Am and Kanye West, as well as gaining him endorsements with The Gap.
“U.M.C.” is Common’s first single from his upcoming project, Invincible Summer which doesn’t have a concrete date for release, but will drop this summer. I’d love to see some great break-dancing in this video. It’s funky.
Check Common’s MySpace for more updates and keep logging on to CL for more music!

Kinda liking it. Definitely something fresh and different from the mainstream out there today. On the other hand, is there any message behind it as Common usually does? Cuz I cant seem to figure it out.

it sounds like some 80’s beat box music the one they break to…different but i like it
even though common is a better lyricist than this it will definitely get some radio play

Its different for Common, but I like it…there’s nothing wrong with a rapper doing a good party joint…its a throw back…Common is in his mid thirties so he’s just revisiting hip-hop when it was at its infancy…I’d be worried about him selling out if the song talked about hoes, chains, cars and money..but he’s not..so I wont be so quick to judge THIS TIME!! I need to hear something more before I buy the album though.

the only reason you say it doesnt
’sound like him’ is cuz you’re used to him bringing the same
old sound to the table.
allow people to step outside of their signature box and bring something
new for a change.
that doesnt mean they’re ’selling out’ or ‘changing for the worst’,
just dig it or fall back.
I personally love it
especially the beat…I figured I would simply because Pharrell
is on it and I generally love the beats that he is always on.
pluss I love old school so its da best of bothh.

Oh shit…I came here thinking I was gonna actually here something good. Whats goin on Common? Damn, this dude is one of my favorite rappers but this has got to be one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard from him.
Its like he’s jumpin on the bullshit pop wagon. He said he was putting out an album for the summer time but THIS? Please try again bruh..I beg you. Do not put this song out. The lyrics dont fit your style and the chorus doesn’t do the song any justice. The Neptunes clearly don’t know how to embody your spirit in their productions like Kanye can. You shouldn’t have gone to the studio without Kanye b/c his music really helps bring your lyrics to LIFE.
I really hope this doesnt kill his career.

Check out his other song produced by Just Blaze titled “The Light.” slated for released with his new album Invincible Summer. Just Blaze did a good job of catching Common’s musical spirit in his production. Although the chorus is still kinda lacking…

Although my baby is not on his conscious tip, for which I love him for, I will not lie to you!
I was banging this on the train this morning on repeat! LMAO!!!!
It’s different, but it sure made me wish I was up in a club! And it’s friday!!!!
Makes me wanna get a drink, grab the girls and go party!!!!!!
I just hope that invincible summer touches different genres, but at the same time stays true to the Common formula that caught my attention in the first place!!!!

I love Common. He’s so outside of the box. I love that he never does just one thing. Lyrically, he’s unstoppable. In the way thehe crafts his lyrics…. whether it’s mainstream or not is of no consequence. He makes the music that he likes. That is what makes it so genuine and I am all the way on it.

People please buy Electric Circus. this is not new ground for him… it’s just new to some of you. People who have followed his career know that this is stuff he likes to do from time to time…. go left instead of right. I mean peanut butter goes with more than just grape jelly…. but that is what you’re used to.

OMG!Y’all need to be quiet!!!I don’t care how much incense you burn, how many groceries you buy from Whole Foods, how intouch you are with your roots,or how many Malcolm X quotes you know,at some point in your life YOU WANNA PARTY!Let the man get his groove on.Must he always be your source for thought-provoking greatness?!Everybody needs a drink and a two step every now and then.I like the song.Pharrell does his thing as always.Common is exploring new territory with this song and that’s what artists do!They don’t conform. They innovate and challenge themselves. At the end of the day, you’re just a consumer. If you like it,you do.If you don’t,you don’t.I promise you one thing,Common won’t lose one minute of sleep ( or piece of Gap endorsement) because of it!….Now I ‘m gonna listen to the song again, lol!

Common isn’t selling out. This is song about having fun and dancing he is not talking about bitches, hoes, pimpin, jewelry, etc. the things people bitch and whine about not being “real hip-hop” lol. Hip-Hop started off in the clubs with party music. He is going back in the days when Common was a b-boy Yes Common was a B-boy so this song is appropriate. Shit I think he still breakdance. People don’t be so damn delusional about hip-hop. It wasn’t all socially conscious in the beginning. That was a particular era of hip-hop.

@ 49 - If you know anything about common - you will know the line “if I don’t like it, i don’t like it, that don’t mean that I’m hatin…”
I personally don’t like pharrels production, its almost like he cant finish a track, its always missing something, but - thats my opinion. I personally didn’t like electric circus as a whole, but liked maybe 4 joints on it, simply because of the message and that old analogue sound they went for.
Is this song fun, yes! But I’m not feeling the track - I would need to hear more to cop this album. I personally am not looking forward to a lot of pharrel production, or any big names for that matter - I want new sh*t from him and the producers, though I’m weary about the producers, I’m sure common will do his part though…
