NEWS: REMY MA GETS 8 YEARS; WEDDING POSTPONED
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Reminisce Smith aka Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting her longtime friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the stomach back in 2007 over an alleged confrontation about stolen money. Back in March, she was found guilty of first-degree assault, criminal weapons charges and attempted coercion.
The 26-year-old rapper was facing 25 years so it looks like she got off kinda good. Here is what she said in court earlier today:
Throughout this unfortunate case, I was advised from my attorney to stay silent but now I want you all to see me for me and what I’ve gone through,” said Remy as tears fell. “Reporters and newspapers have called me a ‘hardcore rapper,’ a ‘hip-hop harlot’—Remy Ma is just a music industry name. A facade. I’m not a thug. I’m not a hardcore anything. I have feelings. I’m Remy Smith—No, I’m Remy Mackie. I’m a wife, mother, daughter and big sister.
Remy wept as she apologized to Barnes-Joseph, but the judge did not sympathize with the rapper. “This is somewhat of a pattern. This is not the first time she has been engaged in a violent act. She never took responsibility for her actions,” the judge said. “This has nothing to do with rap it’s about the actions of one person. Remy is an extremely angry young woman who feels the rules do not apply to her.”
DO YOU AGREE WITH THE SENTENCE?
- YEAH, SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN LONGER (46%, 2,568 Votes)
- WHO CARES (30%, 1,667 Votes)
- NO, THAT’S TOO LONG (25%, 1,394 Votes)
Total Voters: 5,629
In related news, the rapper’s jail house wedding ceremony was called off on Monday when her fiance, rapper Papoose (aka Shamele Mackie), allegedly attempted to smuggle a handcuff key into the Rikers Island Correctional facility. Papoose was not charged, but the rapper was escorted out of the jail and will not be able to visit Remy for six months.

Whoever thinks 8 years is too long, is dumb. Only saying that because of who she is.
If she was some random girl, you’d want a longer sentence.
She SHOT SOMEONE. That person could’ve LOST THEIR LIFE. That girl was someone’s daughter/cousin/friend.
Please…

As much as i hate seeing her have to go for that long and tha thought of her son growing up into a young man without his mother, she should have thought before she shot the girl.
If she really thought about her son, that thought alone woulda made me put down the gun and leave. Cuz i couldn’t imagine having to be taken away from my son.
I think Remy thought she was above the law a lil bit, like she had money and had a lil fame so everything would be aiight.
God Bless her and her family. I just feel soooo sorry for her child.

——It’s beautiful how the Lord has brought this woman to her knees, lol. I thought
——that she was “Shesus Krist”. The reason why she was surprised at her
——sentencing is because she thought that because she worships Satan, and this
——is his world, he would help her, LOL. Now she’s “just Remy Mackie”. They
——should’ve given her 80 years. Piece of trash.

I don’t really care but I say that chick shouldnt’ve stolen her money. Lemme stop, I don’t even know what happened. I just saw “confrontation over stolen money” and jumped the gun. I know some friends of mine who would probably try to steal my money when I get rich and famous. I’m not saying I’m shooting anybody…. BUT I’M JUST SAYING…. LOL

I was/am completely upset that TI got off. As well as the three cops who killed Sean Bell but no matter how you or I feel about those who managed to get off she could have killed someone.

I think this is an injustice for remy ma. Remy ma was protecting her money. cuz her friend didnt want to give the money back. She goes to jail, but the cops that kill sean bell in queens dont go to jail. This is injustice! Remy did what she had to do. So, I am for remy. and she should be out let free!

While Sean Bell is in his grave and his KILLERS free Remy gets 8 years for attempted murder. NOT saying that she is right at all she did DESERVE to get punished but the system is not fair at all ……….

If Remy would have admit to her wrong doing she would not have gotten 8 years. She knew what she did and now after the sentencing she felt remorse. She should have showed that earlier. She had a plea and she didn’t cope it. Now she spent major money on her attorney only to still get time for her crimes. She could have killed her so called ‘best friend’. She better be glad that judge didn’t give her 20-25 years. He had the control to do so. What would you do if a person is clearly guilty of the crime and in court doesn’t show any type of remorse? Not even a sorry? Or I made a mistake? Nothing!

8 yrs., huh? Wow….All of this behind some dumb shit!!! It doesn’t make any sense because it wasn’t worth it. Now not only will she suffer so will her child.
I hope this reality check will wake her up and put her on a better path in life. Because life it just too short.

I don’t feel sorry for Remy Ma. But my heart definitely goes out to her. Prison isn’t easy….for anybody. I believe she is definitely remorseful for her actions, but as the old saying goes “you’ve made your bed, and now you have to lie in it.” The older we get, the more we attain in life….therefore, when we make sometimes unwise decisions, the more there is to lose. May God give her the much needed strength to pull through this….and move forward.
God Bless…..
Peace

I definitely agree on so many levels.
Those police officers murdered Sean Bell and got away scott free. Remy although I do NOT condone her actions shot a young woman (who by the grace of God survived) she gets eight years and those POLICE OFFICERS get NOTHING!!! It kind of makes you wonder about the American Justice system. Yes Remy did the crime and she should definitely do the time, eight years seems like not much for almost taking someone’s life over money. But as for actually taking a young man’s life over false stereotypes, they should have all been kicked off the force and sentenced to atleast twenty years minimum.
In closing… NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!!! (In the case of Sean Bell, R.I.P.)

I dont feel bad for Remy at all, Makeda could have lost her life over something so stupid and there’s do coming back from death. Makeda has a family just like Remy, what if she would have died that night . You have to think before you react, I bet you Remy wishes she would have just let that 3 gees go. Further more Remy was coming up in the game 3 thousand dollars was nothing to her. If Makeda did take that money i bet you she’ll never steal again, As for Remy my heart goes out to you this shit is crazy! next time next time just punch a bitch in the face but that shooting shit is a whole other level!

I had this eloquent comment written just a few seconds ago and I hit some button and it disappeared. Anyhow, ON THE FLIP SIDE, If the chick did steal Remy’s $3,000.00, I can certainly understand her anger. Cuz, it’s bought the prinicipalities (especially if that was her so called BF (betrayal, rage, it would’ve been better if a stranger did it) however, she should have rreeeeaallly thought about her options before she shot the chick. When you’re in the public eye, you gotta let most of that street thinkin go. Violence is not ALWAYS the solution (sometimes it’s the only way a lesson can be taught). I value my life and I understand going hard, but the options have to be weighed. She could’ve counted that as a loss and moved on. But, don’t even lie, most of us know some people will get stomped to a pulp for a dime, if neither one was famous, then people would be like, they shouldna been steelin.

I understand people concern about her son, but she was a f#$ked mother. Any mother that refers to their child as a bad lil n#gger and boast about it needs to be checked. The things she was saying about her son in an interview, you would have thought she was talking about a corner dude. She makes me sick to my stomach. I was rooting for her in the begining, But after seeing how she gets down, I can’t stand her. I think she should have gotten help. Prison don’t work for people like this. It only makes them worse. I really feel sorry for her son. Not because she isn’t gonna be around, but what he is left with…

I don’t feel sorry for her, i feel for all of us, so much hate on this blog … Remy regardless got eight years for what she said was an accident, I don’t know what went down that night and unless you were there none of you guys do either , but what does bother me is that we are so quick to judge and jump for joy when one of our own goes to jail.. not to make excuses but we all know that our justice system is f**cked up… when a white kills us they get nothing, we kill a white we get the chair , and the worse thing is when we hurt each other.. guess what we getting time and THEY are laughing at us…
Its a double edged sword and its got to stop!!!! we need to unite and get this together.. one more thing I know we all got one in the family, a crazy cousin or a pistol packing grandma.. things happen accidents happen and when it just might happen to you who will have your back???!!!

I mean who wouldn’t be pissed about someone stealing from you but if you making millions what’s $3000? She could’ve handled that diffrently even if thy had to throw hands. And I so agree with the judge everyone wants to use the rap game conspiracy theroy or what not when it’s obviuos they just need to take responsibility for their own action. This should be a lesson well learned!!

Exactly…judging like they got a heaven or hell to put her in, SHM. I’m not saying she was right for what she did…she needed to be help accountable. But at the same time eight years is pushing the envelope (to me). The women who killed my father only got 3 years and she did it intentionally. At least her victim is ALIVE to talk about it.
I hope this is taken as a serious example to all of us to be so careful in our actions and inactions.

i think 8 years is too much. its unfortunate that the victim had to get shot but the girl still has her life and putting remy in jail for 8 years is not doing anything. they already taking all her money. i just feel bad a tear formed in my eye to see that another black woman has to go to jal and for 8 years thats deep. she should have gotten lifetime probation or something.

I feel sorry for Remy’s son. Eight years is stiff but she could of gotten a longer sentence. hat eto say it but this should be a lesson to our youth and people in general. The violence that is rhymed about in most of HIP HOp is fantasy. We have got to take responcibility for our actions, what is this girl died( I do not know if tghe victim has children as well but she could have left this girls child motherless or her mother childless) WE HAVE GOT TO PROTECT AND WATCH OUT FOR EACH OTHER, THESE MFKER WANT TO LOCK US UP ANYWAY AND WE GIVE THEM THE EXCUSE TO LOCK US UP! @79 if that is the case, then they are not your friends. And that was the case in this situation. Remy isn’t a “friend” type,so of course she hangs with her a likes. All that “street” dealings, will only get you in two places, jail and in a grave. Isn’t it always a “friend” or “girlfriend” that do a street nygger in? It kills me how people just like anyone into their circle just cause. Now look at the end results… I don’t have dealings with anyone that I have to second guess about anything. I guess that’s because I’m over 25, and my mom would have beat my azz for being a follower. Another thing, if Remy is so “paid”, $3,000 isn’t nothing. Jay Z spends that plus, before he takes his coat off and is seated… You give a nygger a little bit of money and they will always self destruct. That’s why it’s nothing to give a rapper a million dollar deal now days. Because the higher ups see the big picture. Too bad alot of rappers don’t.

I’m not a Remy Ma fan, but I feel the need to say this. Unfortuneatly (SP?), Remy doesn’t know anything but “hood” actions. Yes, she is grown and really should know better than to shoot someone, but being from the hood, she may be one of those that lives by that hood code: you don’t steal money from someone and that person get away with it. That makes you look like a punk. In my opinion, she did what she felt like she was supposed to do in order to keep her “hood”, “down ass chick” reputation because that’s what she knows to do. I am not justifying her actions at all, I just wanted to give a little insight. I do believe 8 years was DEFINETLY a blessing considering she was originally facing 25 years, but the 8 year sentence was a result of her having a record also, not just the shooting. I will go on to reiterate that Remy is basically a product of her environment, and me personally being someone from the same type of environment, I am able to say that with conviction. Some people rise above it and don’t stay in that lifestyle or mindset. Others decide to continue to live that way and keep that hood mentality. Even though Remy has money, money can only change your address, your clothes, and the cars you drive- not where you come from or how you think, and I think people should remember that before they go off and start calling her a bitch and dumb broad this and stupid ho that, or whatever terms they’re using for her. Whatever the reason for her actions, jail is jail and the shit is real, whether it’s a day, a month, 10 months or 10 years. Even though she did the crime and must “do the time”, my heart still goes out to her. And if Papoose is any kind of man, he’ll be standing at the gates of the jail on the exact day this 6 months is over, waiting to see her again. She should get out in about 7 1/2 for time served, maybe earlier than that for good behavior. Keep your head up, Remy. Regardless of the media playing this up, there are people that wish you well.
