NEWS ROUND UP: COSBY WANTS ACTION / NATION’S LEADING DOCTORS / KILPATRICK NEWS
Friday, May 2, 2008

At a conference of community associations on Thursday, Bill Cosby urged the audience to stand up and confront the ills facing black Americans and “stop looking for somebody to blame.”
Speaking about the responsibilities of families in raising children, Cosby characterized his words as “blunt, but not harsh.”
“I haven’t seen the demonstrations saying, ‘I’m not allowing my children to listen to this,’” he said at the conference, hosted by Family Intervention Services and Newark Now, an organization formed by Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker. “It’s killing us. We’re not talking about it, and we’re not beating it down,” referring to radio stations that play music he called “pro-murder and anti-women”.
Booker called Cosby “a critical voice right now in the American context” and praised his willingness to speak out on issues without bowing to political correctness:
“This is a time for candor — we can’t beat around the bush,” Booker said. “We’ve got large percentages of our population that are underachieving. He’s speaking to the heart of the matter, and he speaks to the realities of what a lot of folks are experiencing.”
Cosby called his critics “intellectual panhandlers” who enable destructive behavior by staying silent or blaming racism.
“You’ve got these idiots who’ve got these degrees and some of them are ordained ministers and they say, ‘Bill, you’re picking on the poor,’” he said. He then drew laughs by adding, “Well, so did Jesus then. Jesus was always telling someone, `Go ye.’ Jesus was always telling people to go somewhere. And `don’t do this again or don’t do that again.’”
NATION’S LEADING DOCTORS
In the May issue of Black Enterprise, “America’s Leading Doctors” names 140 top-notch physicians responsible for saving millions of lives through the revolutionary treatment of diseases, from cancer and diabetes to heart attacks and HIV/AIDS. Many of these doctors have been responsible for major medical breakthroughs and have participated in the creation of drugs that have vastly improved the quality of life for patients.
“A consistent objective of Black Enterprise is to communicate that without investing in the quality of our health and that of our families and communities, it is all but impossible to create sustainable, multigenerational wealth,” said Founder and Publisher Earl G. Graves Sr.
He added:
“The life of my father was cut short at the age of 46 by a heart condition that was likely both preventable and treatable. The exceptional black physicians we highlight uniquely understand the medical issues that confront African Americans. Their expertise makes them an essential part of the solution to the healthcare crisis facing black Americans and our entire nation.”
KILPATRICK NEWS

Detroit City Council members may be one step closer to ousting mayor Kwame Kilpatrick with the release of a legal brief containing excerpts of more than 100 text messages sent between the married mayor and his now-divorced former chief of staff, Christine Beatty.
The messages reveal Kilpatrick and Beatty repeatedly declared their love, discussed liaisons and marriage and even plotted to get rid of police officers whose investigations threatened to expose their affair in late 2002 and 2003.
“I don’t think it’s a death blow, but it’s another blow to his credibility,” said council President Kenneth Cockrel Jr. “It pretty clearly suggests that the mayor and his chief of staff were running the Police Department and not the police chief. That’s scary.”
Kilpatrick, charged with perjury and other felonies for denying the affair and the dismissal of officers under oath during last year’s police lawsuit, called the messages a “regurgitation of old news” while speaking to reporters Tuesday night. “I don’t think this was a smoking gun that everyone thought it would be,” he said.
His attorney, James C. Thomas, said the messages were “cut and pasted” and illegally obtained. “Give him is day in court. You have already convicted him by putting it in The Detroit News.” Thomas, however, declined to cite a passage that is false.
City Council members received the document after a judge ordered its release Tuesday morning. Council President Ken Cockrel Jr. said “going to the governor may be something” the council may consider. But he vowed to abstain from future votes about the mayor because he would assume the post until a special election if Kilpatrick is removed from office.
“I hesitate to speculate where this is all going to end up,” Cockrel said.

That cartoon is HILARITY!!!!
I have to say I feel a little sorry for Christine Beatty….because she seemed very much so motivated by love. Some of those text messages allude to the relationship they had in high school so it wasn’t a brand new thing for them. And as it usually goes, Kwame is still married while Christine has left her husband. On the other hand, trying to shut the police up was crazy…they were a little drunk on power with that one. Had they just come clean with the affair, they would have avoided the hell they’re dealing with now.

People think that Mr. Bill Cosby, is crazy, and lost his mind. Think again! Bill Cosby is right on the money when he talks to us about stereotypes, and how we should take care our own needs, and stop killing each other. Please youngsters, and some of you old heads still trying to be an adolescent, please listen to Mr. Bill, because he is not crazy, but a smart, and intelligent man who cares about his peoples!

It’s funny how Cosby stresses education but calls people with degrees who disagree idiots. While some of what he says in correct, a lot of it is incorrect. He continues to talk and write books but I doubt this is effective. In some ways he is picking on the poor and impoverished, people who are poor in spirit. I’m starting to wonder if his “tough talk is really directed to his community or a broader community. He launched more attacks on “poor blacks who have let us down” than the industry that creates music that is anti-women & pro-murder. Further people on this very site rant and rave about Jay-Z, L’il Wayne, etc and then claim “Cosby is right”.. Jay-Z sold crack, that’s genocide. Why do we celebrate him and his rhymes about that life? The way I see it, Cosby would never “call out” Jay-Z or Bob Johnson (former BET) or Clive Davis because wealthy connected people can shut him down. This leads me to believe his “call outs” are not rooted in real change.

I completely agree with #1! WE are the ones killing US. And we keep making excuses. “no it’s the systematic racism that is holding us down” Well, yes, that does happen, but itll only hold you down if you let it. Or, “dont expect rap music to raise your children.” Well, no, BUT when its just pointless, ignorant, degrading, explicit ranting - all feuled by money, that is affecting your community and you should be ashamed! Black men kill Black men, Black women disrespect themselves, Black people in power abusing their power, Black men disrespect Black women - and then blame the women for being “dumb” and having no self esteem - ummmm if you need a naked woman gyrating around you 24/7 to make you feel ilke a man, then YOU are the one who lacks self esteem brutha! - Barack is trailing Hillary now cuz that crazy Rev Wright! WTF? A man in the pulpit shouldnt even be talking like that. Talkin bout “G*ddamn America” - in the church using God’s name in vein?? Many people agree with what he said, buts its how and when he said it that has just crushed Baracks campaign. And Kilpatrick is such a loser. And a bigger loser is Beatty - in all the texts she is so in love, love this, love that, and all he says is “ditto.” WTF? They both get what they deserve!

………responsibility for our own actions and stop expecting people to “give” us
………something. Yes, as black people it is harder to get ahead…we are unfairly not
………given some of the same opportunities as whites…but that’s even the more
………reason for us to work harder. Our struggle is always going to be an uphill one!

he is telling it 100% real! I can’t tell how many of our youths are just lost! I’ve worked in the school system and all kids care about is material things! poor math skills, reading skills, and half of them have no respect for authority! they have no fathers in teh hhouse hold and they have people around them always makeing excuses why they are all under achievers. The smart kids are stuck in classes full of bad kids that don’t want to learn and they get stuck in the stupidness! we need to stop pointing fingers people! WE NEED TO GET OURSELVES TOGETHER! yes! there is racuism! i’ve dealt with it, but I always put my best foot foward! it is beyond disgesting horrible when our black youth walk around using teh word “nigga” around white folks. Don’t forget! they’ll just keep on building jails to put our sons in! stop pointing the finger and get your childs life together! stop buying him designer shoes phones when the child is below his academic skills! Stop giving birth to babies with no fathers ! yes the system is against us, and we need to work for each other! this crap there are children is listening to is club music, it’s for entertainment, and we ned to let our children know that! Jay-z is a entertainer! we are parents. we need tp teach our children by exapmle! I grew up with all types of music, but I knew 100% it wasn’t real! We need to turn to teach our children that they are all not sports stars, singers, and entertainers, we are doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers, and the the list goes on!

I read those text messages the other day from another site on Tuesday as a matter of fact and the Detroit mayor needs his tail ousted for real. Talking about nigglet and such he needs to go. Had he done his job as a mayor instead of using taxpayers dollars texting and spending time in hotel and motel rooms maybe his city would have so much crime as they do. He should have put that extra energy behind getting some extra police to patrol the city.

@ #13, You make a valid point. We support and glorify the rappers who are putting out the garbage that is leading our youngsters in the wrong DIRECTION. Many females today don’t know whether they are male or female (did N-E-1 see Lil’ Mama on 106& Park yesterday? Straight confusion), the men are are rapping about guns, selling drugs, or how many chicks they are bangin’ and it doesn’t make sense. And when people get married, like Usher, we dog them out. So what if his wife isn’t up to your standards! At least he married her and is trying to set an example in the community. Diddy made 3 kids with his ex and he still hasn’t tied the knot. It seems like we’re all a little twisted. We need to get together on one accord and support the right things that are uplifting our communities and try to keep it on a positive note like Barack (our future President).

#13 has a point!!!!!!!!!
Kwame is gonna get what he has coming…KARMA!
As far as BILL COSBY im on the fence! im not going to front &be a hipocrite like some. YES there is alot of unnessecary ignorance in our black culture that is glamorized instead of corrected. and Bill isnt exactly going about trying to start a movement against it in the right way. but at the same token to each is his own and we all must live our lives and answer to god in the end individually.
i like some Hip Hop and i love R&B and i let my kids listen to it as long as its not vulgar and i teach my kids the real and the difference between right and wrong so they can make informed choices. and i still cuss when i get mad and i have this OFF and ON SWITCH as my mother called it. you have to know when to turn it off&on
and be able to fit in where ever you are. at the office or with your home girls. i know i am not the only one who does it. i guess people just dont want to be concieved as different or not in touch with who they are . but class cannit be turned off or on and if you teach it to your kids then we can get some where!
what about the kids who dont have anyone to teach them class or the differnce between right and wrong? thats who Bill is not being fair to!!!!!!! and whats done is done so he should say what can he do to help since he is in the position. start a program or something in the areas where he knows the most ignorant of our people are…THE HOOD!

You can say what you want, but Bill Cosby is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! We can’t keep blaming everyone else for what we’re doing to OURSELVES! If we want to turn the corner, we need to start with EDUCATION FIRST….and no high school doesn’t count! In 2008, a high school education (if you even want to call it that) is hardly and education at all.

Every black household in America should have a subscription to BLACK ENTERPRISE. This magazine speaks the truth and focuses on WHAT IS REAL instead of Beyonce’s weave, the latest bling or who shoot who. The black doctors issue was very very inspirational and youngsters looking for role models need to look no further. There are blacks in this country making tremendous strides and they are not phased by racism or obstacles. These people don’t sit around blaming whitey for everything. BLACK ENTERPRISE shows you step by step in every issue on how to build a business, maintain a career, own a home, invest your money, lead a spiritual life and how not to perpetuate stereotypes (you listening Flavor Flav?).
Cosby’s delivery does get on my nerves, but the man knows what he’s talking about because he has seen and done it all.

People should get in the habit of writing their legislature because they are the ones that we voted into office and who have failed us in many ways. I personally empower myself by making them be accountable. They were hired to do a job in my best interest and those of their constituents and they have failed; therefore I will point the finger. but I also empower myself by making my congressman and senaotrs accountable by writing letters to them, which have been answered. As a result, I was able to have a lot of things improved in my community. People think its taboo but that is why many minority communities are forgotten….among other reasons.
I understand Mr. Cosby’s message but he has to understand that everything is not our fault either. The government has failed us in many ways and yet we still perservered as a people and until he addresses that as well, then I consider him too one-sided for my taste. But God Bless him and his followers. I wonder how he feels about the Katrina victims. Did they fail to do something right that caused them to be stranded in flood water? Hmmmmm…I think not

Bill Cosby has valid points, we are the only group of people that can not stand behind one another and support each other. We always need a hook up from each other but yet when it comes to the other race we are willing to pay the full price. We are trying to make a living just like the other person but yet we want to take each other for granted and want a discount. We are quick to spend money on tennis, cars, etc. but yet we don’t own anything or go anywhere and are one paycheck away from poverty. We have problems when teenagers are contracting diseases at a higher rate than ever. We have problems when teachers are being beat-up by students. We have problems when it is the norm now for females 16-21 have at least one kid. We have problems when young people are posting videos of themselves commiting violence for approval. We have gotten to the point in society where it is best that we do nothing, that is why this crap keeps happening. Prime example, the top of the news this past week was Jeremiah Wright and his comments. WHY? What about the Sean Bell case in NY and all the police officers that got off? What about justice that is injust? We support the WRONG things at the wrong times.
As for the music, television industry, yes you have to start at the bottom and work our way up to the top. Who pays the top exectives and label artists salaries, WE DO. As long as we buy the music, watch the films, support the various forms of entertainment, the industry will continue to produce it. It is all about making money, and they don’t care who if effects as long as they get paid. Even down to the drug market, who is on the street, us. We are the ones stupid enough to place ourselves on the corner, risk getting shot, thrown in jail, etc. The big man does not care, it is about the money. So while the big people are sailing on their yachts this summer we will be figuring out how to get from point A to point B because the gas rates are off the roof or if we should eat or pay a bill or crying because Pookey was shot because he entered another territory.

I completely agree and could not have said it better.
Bill Cosby irritates me. He does have valid points but I think he is confused and detached. I never understand how so many people agree with him. He is saying what we all could have said and you see no other race making news monthly by degrading their race. Do white people address the “white trash” and redneck people… No… We all have problems, each and every race. Do you see Seinfeld addressing Ozzy Osborne crazy music and saying its bringing down the whole race… NO
When Bill Made This Statement
“These are people going around stealing Coca Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake! And then we all run out and are outraged, ‘The cops shouldn’t have shot him.’ What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand? (laughter and clapping). I wanted a piece of pound cake just as bad as anybody else (laughter) And I looked at it and I had no money.”>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I lost all respect for him… Anybody who justifies killing a child for stealing a piece of cake is crazy… What if this child was hungry, maybe his mother was on drugs and didn’t know any better… Its not something to be laughed at. You dont Shoot anybody over a piece of cake… That is crazy…. I’m tired of hearing him talk… YES he has spent money on education now he needs to learn our problems are not simply solved by education. Its takes self love and respect and if I sit around and listen to his hatred all day how can I then be proud of myself or my people… We all have seen the bad but we have come a long way and done alot of good.
And another ignorant statement
“”Those people are not Africans, they don’t know a damned thing about Africa. With names like Shaniqua, Shaligua, Mohammed and all that crap and all of them are in jail.”

His attempted diss towards Michael Eric Dyson is pretty hilarious too, and if he won’t even listen to Mike then he’s just lost.

These could/should have been two separate posts. The BE article is lost in the muck of Kwame. But I agree with Mr. Cosby 100% but the blame does rest with the artists, the consumer has a part in the complicity of the problem.

Bill is right no matter how you look at it. You don’t have to agree with everything he say’s, but he is on point this time. I run into so many young African American boy and girls who watch BET and other crap and think it’s cool to be like those images. I am only 23 and I see how some of my friends have been influenced by what they see and listen to. In highschool Lil Kim and Trina were some of my friends idols.
Kwame needs to step down NOW! That law suit is going to cost tax payers money they don’t have and shouldn’t of had to pay anyway.

Cosby’s points are semi-valid. Here’s the problem, the people who need to listen to him are not listening. He doesn’t talk to them, he complains about them. I bet every person screaming and shouting and his little meetings are employed, educated and responsible. You can’t reach out to people if you demean them or put them down. All you fools hollerin “he’s right” are probably clubbin, consumin and probably not volunteerin. FYI, Cosby’s family has had it’s issues too. He had a kid on drugs. He has a kid out of wedlock. I gess it’s OK because he has a lot of money…..

Don’t worry Mr. Cosby there is some black youth who understands the role of education. Hopefully in the future I will be listed in the Nation’s leading doctors. I might be bias to Mr. Cosby because till this day I tivo The Cosby Show but the youth is sad..today everyone wants to be famous and dont really understand that being famous some dont have longivity. You are famous one day and not the other. Education also depending on your desire & motives with it I believe everyone has the chance to be successful but it all depends on YOU. Not you mom, not your crowd, not your neighborhood, JUST YO

i agree with bill. all this generation cares about are these things: money, power, sex.
that is all they care about.
nothing more nothing less.
they say: forget God, forget family, forget mom & dad, forget community, forget wife & kids ….
the only person people are living for are themselves.
r and b is taking a dip, too!
with ushers crap. and cassie. and all this other stuff.
i really hope the youth wakes up.
if you have to be friendless just to make it out and make a better life for yourself … SO BE IT!
if you have to be friendless to stand up for what’s right … so be it!
stop being afraid to walk alone and to try and make a difference.

We should demand that the US government stop taxing “black folks” for the amount of years they held our people as slaves; then the economical field would be even.
One of the reason I under achieve as they put it in school, because of the “uneducation” I was getting. Tell me who was really taught about “black inventors” in school. I’m not mad at “Rev Martin Luther King Jr” but he wasn’t the only one for the cause, and I didn’t hear about the others who lived and died for us to be here now. It’s Martin Luther King all day and all night. How about the others? Why not teach us about them?
Also, tell me how the hell a black man is suppose to focus with a “white Christ like person” taught as his “Creator” and expect us to focus and accept that bull crap.
Who has seen God to draw a photo of him, mind you, I”m not for drawing images of “The Creator” of any form, because no one has seen him a lived.
Who wants to go to school to get a “Eurocentric Education” and also to be taught “God Bless America, America is number one” do we mean, God shouldn’t bless other nations? How can we stand with other “Whites, in particular and say this and in the same sight see Mr Bell being shoot up 50 odd times?
The Fake Jews, are still talking about what the Nazi’s done to them; why isn’t the calling the race card? but if Blacks starting talking it’s using the race card? Get the fuck outta here.

Was thinking about a few things:
- Wondering if Kwame Kilpatrick is still “seeing” Christine Beatty on an “Intimate Basis”
- Wondering how Kwame Kilpatrick wife feels after reading all of those text message
- Wondering how Christine Beatty’s Husband feels after reading all those text messages.
One thing is for certain: Christine Beatty was REALLY TRUELY in love with Mayor Kilpatrick, and he seemed to enjoy the time they spent together.

well racim DOES have a lot to do with the state of blacks today but it’s true that we need to stand up and work together to improve our situation. complaining about what slavery has done to us won’t help us go further

in as much as i want to agree with bill cosby i have to say he has lots of points wrong and maybe a few points right, hwy do i say this? who is bill talking to in the first place? i`m a black man, never had a misdemeanor, never had a felony, never sat in jail one single day of my life let alone a penitentiary, never been on drugs(Lord knows i`m so anti-drugs to the point where i think the drug enforcement administration is not doing enough), i have been to college and graduated(mind you in america i dont care what anybody says but i strongly believe you can make it without a college education), i never refer to another black man as nigger,i strive to speak as fluently and simple as possible. If there is a problem with the african american community, i believe black parents are to be blamed because as a parent if you raise with the moral values and principles that he/she needs then i guess we wont have to deal with all this mess, black people in this country(anyway the majority of black men) are either very direspectful of the law or just plain ignorant of that law and this is one of the reasons why i think cosby can keep running his mouth if he wants but as far as i`m concerned i think new and improved penitentiaries should be built, simple as that.We live in a civilised society and laws need to be respected, if they are broken, whover broke them must pay the price
racist white law enforcement officials dont need to come at black folks anad arrest just like that, they know dumb negroes are the norm and so they dont want their time

Bill Cosby is so full of it. My thing is, why does he wait till he’s about to croak
before he becomes proactive in speaking out to “HELP” the black community. Bull Crap. He’s just an old ornery…
-Kudos to Black Enterprise. I have been enjoying their magazine for some years now. It’s nice to know other black doctors are out their making a difference, including Ben Carson.

I agree with everything Bill is saying and it’s sad. Here we have Reverends who aren’t doing anything to help our community unless it’s for their own self status. Tell’m Bill.
I’m very impressed with Black enterprise Magazine, I’m going to have to start subscribing to them.
Kilpatrick please disappear, my ten year old knows you did it. Who you fooling?

I have a better idea, quit worrying so much about how we look to white people. Instead of highlighting the kids that dont care, give more attention to the kids who give a damn about their education. Start raising more money for scholorships and reward children publicly who have good grades, strong atheletes. partcipate in the arts ect. and ignore the bad apples. If I see another post about black people need to do this and that I’m gonna knock somebody the fuck out. People do not want to be preached to, for those of ya’ll who dont understand. Spend more time and money on the ones who care and those ones who dont will either jump on the bandwagon and change or they’ll die a fuckup. Thats the way it is

I already know why we killing ourselves, we value materials than our self respect. We become jealous when someone else is doing better than you. Don’t Hate, congratulate. We award and celebrate people for going to jail. We don’t value our elderly (their wiser), we walk all over them and call them crazy, Why? We think that what they have to say is foolishness and It shouldn’t apply to me. What ignorance?
The generation of the Stupid.

i would also continue by making other points by people trying to blame music or the absence of fathers in the house( another black move, trying to blame something or somebody else other than yourself)
i love rap,i have been listening to rap and i cant remenber owning a gun one day in my life, i cant remenber calling women out of their name because of rap, i cant remenber being violent because of rap, i just cant because its never happened
i know a lot of kids who grew up in houses where they had mommy and daddy and they`re servng 10 yrs in prisons right now, black women kill with that good-for-nothing excuse talking about they dont have fathers at home? pleassssssssssssssse, shut up and step up to the plave and raise your kids by teaching them the difference btween right and wrong instead of running your mouths about fathers not being there, because if fathers are not there maybe its your fault for not choosing the right man, because i`ll be damned if i have a child and i`m not taking care of my child(except if im dead0 but i will really be damned if that happens, i`m not having it, so when some of you go out there and have kids by good-for-nothing negroes you want to put the blame on black men not taking care or their absence being the reason why many of you fail to raise your kids appropriately , how stupid…………smh, my father died when i was young, former soldier developed some type “mystery“ illness(anyway thats what the military said) and my mother raised me, here i am, if my mother kep running her mouth about being a single mother i`m sure i would have been somewhere in a maximum security penitentiary making collect calls, but no! she stepped up to the plate and made me the man that i am
music, white people or the absence of fathers are gullible reasons that loosers give for their failures period……..
