NEWS: Teen in skimpy dress banned prom & handcuffed
Monday, May 12, 2008
Teenager Marche Taylor was banned from her high school prom and led away in handcuffs after turning up in a skimpy dress over the weekend. She’d dared to bare her legs, shoulders and midriff in the risqué yellow outfit at the last sioree of Madison High School’s year in Houston, Texas. When the 17-year-old tried to get past door staff at the Sugar Land Marriott hotel’s ballroom, she was told she’d violated her school’s dress code. A confrontation turned nasty and police were called, escorting Taylor away in handcuffs.

Tylernol & Carrie Ann made some VERY Valid Points.
A few things need to be pointed out.
- The reason why she was Banned from the Prom is because she did not have on any underwear (you will have to listen to the CNN report for the whole story).
- The Principal of the school also indicated that her dress was inappropriate.
- One day YOUR daughter will be going to her High School Prom.
How would YOU feel (blackisbeautiful, Juicy superstar, Shavar Jackson) if YOUR daughter wore a dress like that ???

I got you.
But I respectfully disagree. The point I was trying to make is that this went national. That makes it newsworthy, pertinent to discuss and puts it in a whole other realm. We have to ask ourselves why did the media choose to exploit the poor choice of a young black sister who clearly doesn’t know what damage this exposure might cause her future.
And her situation might not affect you personally, but I feel much pain and sorrow for ANY of my sisters who feel they have to display themselves this way in public - unless she really is a hooker or stripper, then to each, as they say. But this is an underage child (I’ll assume she’s 17, and even if she’s 18, that still considered being a minor) and I, myself, find it sad.
I sometimes come here to post and I’ll joke and throw some shady shit around, but this is just not a joke for me.
And I do respect your right to voice your opinion, though.

How do YOU feel about the GreatGlam.Com ads on this blog ?
do you like the outfits ?
do you feel they are age appropriate ?
* Would you “allow” your daughter to wear those outfits ?

Wow, the comments on this post are so deep … deeply offensive and misguided. There are truly some ignorant comments here and nasty attacks on the young girl and her mother. No one seems to even acknowledge the daddy or attribute any responsibility to him. There are two major issues here: 1) We pretty much agree the dress is inappropriate 2) Can we go deeper to talk about why it is that a skimpy dress receives more media than the vicious attacks and kidnappings of black women.
This is tricky because people want to show outrage and assert that all blacks aren’t like this. But in the course of critiquing the young lady, people don’t want to acknowledge the way the media manipulates these types of stories such that when black women are in the news its related to sex: Janet boob-gate and now this…
For those of you saying “black people need to do better” I’m disappointed because you’re basically validating the fact that this girl represents ALL of us. We are all individuals, so don’t you dare tell ME I need to do better when my decisions have nothing to do with her.

It’s cool and thank you for being respectful. I just feel that as black people we complain but yet we don’t do anything about it. Has there been any progress? I agree with alot of what you are saying though and you made valid points but is that going to change anything? I see alot of young sisters my age or younger that are dressing like that because their momma think its cute and they approve of it. I don’t dress like that to prom because I think it’s disrespectful to myself and to the school. Looking at it from a broader scope, I think that alot of us commenters tend to approve a revealing clothes on celebrities but when their daughter wears it or someone that is young that is related wears it becomes a problem. So maybe that is a start for us women to stop giving exceptions to celebrities. Many of us give excuses to celebrities and say they are grown but yet your daughter thinks it cute and is influenced by it and thinks that is the way to get attention because obviously celebrity get attention for the way they dress. Another issue is that some women give exceptions and is that “revealing and classy” rule. That shouldn”t be in the same sentence lol. If you don’t like revealing clotthes then don’t give exceptions it just makes people’s complaint sound contradictory. I understand your post and agree but yet I haven’t seen any progess.

The very idea that CL exists and posted this, is progress.
That you and me are expressing our opinions is progress.
That these opinions, pro and con, inspire debate, is progress.
That a seed is planted and that we will most likely discuss this matter with others is progress.
That Each One Teaches One, one person at a time, makes a significant difference.
For example, you just taught me how to better temper my anger and not toss insults, which can sully the opinion I was trying to make in the first place. I don’t wanna get all feely and shit, but there you have it.
My opinion, anyway.

I came back to read some new comments about the situation. One thing I did learn from watching the coverage from the principals standpoint was that they were given a paper that stated the dresscode for prom and each student had to sign saying they would obey the rules. It also stated that if the dress code was not followed students would not be allowed inside. In that case I feel no type of remorse for this young lady.
My school was the same with the dresscode. When we payed senior dues we also signed a contract stating the dress code. On prom night everyone looked beautiful in their own way. Everyone did not wear the puffy princess dresses either. Some had beautiful form fitting satin dresses. In all wearing less does not make you look better at a prom. Be a lady not a street walker which is how she looked sad to say. Also at the age of 17 why are young girls obsessed with “sex appeal” anyways, but get mad at rude comments guys make towards them or mad when guys only want them for sex?

I come back on this blog and see there’s more blind people. “I don’t see nothing wrong with what she had on.” “Can someone please explain to me what’s the big deal’ ………….If you don’t see a problem with what she got on, then I pray that you never have children because it’s getting worse out here. We don’t need you or your seed to add more to it………….The problem with the dress is 1) the girl is a minor 2) It’s a school function 3) It’s disrespectful not only for her but her family and those how put the event like prom in such high standards. People want to throw the black card because they don’t have nothing better to add, this so ridiculous, this have nothing to do with race. Nobody with high self-esteem should ever wear a dress like this. like I said before.
…………”YOU CAN’T DRESS LIKE A TRAMP AND EXPECT TO BE TREATED LIKE A LADY”
Women need to get it together. “It’s my body and should wear whatever I want.” Okay, but don’t be surprise when people don’t take you seriously or take for a hooker. We need to elevate our game. Men who find these kind of women attractive are just as much to blame. A real man want his woman to have love for herself. It’s to a man’s character as well if he finds these women attractive.

The police where not called because of her dress, they were called because she caused a scene and would not leave!
They gave her the option of going home or going to jail, she opted to go to jail.
When you go to school functions like prom, there are contracts you have to sign saying you will abide by the rules. Her ticket money was already used to pay for the hotel and dinner. She’s the one who decided to break the rules, why should the school give her a refund ?
As for the J.Lo comparisons………..J.lo is a grown women! This girl is a 17 year old STUDENT, at a SCHOOL event……….

Each year, the prom pictures become more tasteless. Is this a south thing?? We all get these photos e-mailed to us in bulk. Remember the classic pregnant girl at the prom? Her dress… For the ones asking who are they to say??…HELLO, this is a “school”ceremony. The prom is suppose to be a classy event. What happen to feeling like Cinderella? Now days they feel and look like strippers. Not trying to make it a race thing, but I don’t see white kids dressing up like this. It is only our black kids. Glorifying pimps and hoes. This says alot about their up bringing. For this girl to even think it was all right to walk out the door with this on, says alot. This is so sad. This generation of children are lost. The 80’s sure made a lasting impression. We all know what was the big thing of the 80’s, and this is the result;unruly,no class, no morals, no ethics, proud to be nothing generation. You are suppose to put on your best. I didn’t see this until today, but I heard Michael B talking about it yesterday. It stayed on my mind. There are still some nice decent girls out there, but the numbers are so small, they are not being notice. Parents need to step their game up. And stop going on Maury and Jerry for help. What happen to decent parents? Follow this girl home and I bet you, an older version, hoochie momma will be laid up somewhere.
Now I would like to shout out the young ladies that where out yesterday getting ready for their prom..The young ladies at 34th st Sephora, you all made me smile. And for the mother taking the time to help her daughter and her friends pick out make up next door at Duane Reade, keep up the good work.

Why am I not mad at the media? Because the media’s purpose has changed over the years. The media’s purpose once was to be watchdogs over the government and other entities for the purpose of protecting the people. Today the media’s purpose is to get ratings. So although I do have a huge problem with the media’s coverage of black victims because there is an ugly disparity in how we’re covered, I am not angry with them for putting this mess on front street.
Just as I have an issue with how the justice system is unfair in sentencing and the like, I do not get angry when a black person acts up and becomes subject to the unfair treatment. The reason is…we know it isn’t fair before we cut a fool, so why subject yourself to it in the first place? It is called personal responsibility. It is one thing when you are innocent and you get mistreated, but when you are complicit in the situation, you get barely any sympathy from me.
At this stage in life, I realize some people don’t think like me, act like me, or believe like me. And I’m cool with that, however I refuse to succumb to the ignorance that is displayed in some of these comments.
Some people have put it very well, if you want to be treated like a lady (or gentleman) act like a lady (or gentleman). Now if you carry yourself like a lady and get disrespected, then I am all for you complaining and getting angry. But if you act in a manner that is personally disrespectful and then get disrespected, I have a hard time coming to your rescue. A lot of things we honestly bring on ourselves.

I shake my head reading some of these post. For the ones that ok’d it, ya’ll are still young. Or maybe that’s how it is for you. No disrespect. But it’s not a “generation thing” it’s an individual thing, think of the “hot mamas” or more risky ladies of your time, it was more TABoo then but now it’s more acceptable (NOT SAYING THAT’s a good thing) next time you walk in the grocery store look at the magazine rack and tell me how many TASTEFUL outfits you see vs. classy outfits that are not wedding dresses? Sex sells and it’s being pushed in our children’s faces, it’s not for the media, the school or anyone to educate our youth it’s our jobs as parents and leaders, so if you personally know any young ladies or men that dress what you consider “inappropriate” address it, don’t generalize that this is all the youth because it’s not. Depending on the family, church and or role models one has, it would determine how they decide to carry themselves. She’s more than likely months away from being 18 so to me (JMO) it seems silly to keep her from wearing something of that nature, I personally don’t think she looks like a stripper because she’s so thin, more of a tasteless MODEL, but don’t be judgmentatl, look within yourself and your shortcomings maybe you have the “classy style” on lock, but this child maybe intelligent, has a scholarship and from the looks of the dress, she probably designed and made it herself, she could be a designer?!

Her race has nothing to do with you, you think other young girls of other races wouldn’t wear the similar outfits?
Why can’t people simply make comments about the situation at hand, instead of always mentioning the race. We all can see she is black, that doesn’t need to be said.

@ TABBY this does not have to do with the generation. People have been saying that about each and every generation, so please that ain’t the problem. It involves many things. 1) Parents 2) Entertainment 3)Morals 4) Self-Esteem. There other things to, but it’s not like what these kids are doing now is something new. Kids have been acting like this for years, they are just getting worse.

Most of your comments made since until the almost 18 clause. Almost 18 is not good enough . .if she tries to get an alcoholic drink and the bartender ask for ID, you think he is going to say . .Oh you are almost 18 so I am going to serve you this drink anyway . .NOPE, he’ll get shut down with the quickness. THEREFORE, until then she is still considered a minor and should “NOT” be allowed to wear what she wants and the event was a “high” school prom if she’s feeling that grown up being that she is almost 18, she should have opted for a night club as opposed to a “high school” prom where there are guidelines.
In a nutshell, the attire was not appropriate for a high school event.

On top of that tasteless dress she also wasn’t wearing any underwear.

We shouldn’t blame this 16 year old girl for her choice of dress. It should be expected with the majority of black women being seen on tv are video vixens or overtly sexualized actresses and singers. White women are shown as attractive women in every aspect of life. They are ones you see jogging down the way, or heading somewhere important in business attire, or they have the luxury of being picked up for dates in every day life. The women who look like her in mass media are dancing and girating in outfits just like that. So maybe she believes she is dressing the way black men would like her to because this is what is put in most videos wether they be rap, hip-hop, or r&b.

Good points, but generation wise, I don’t recall it being this bad in the “innocent” Whitney Houston days of the 80’s: Girls were still wearing the baggy jeans with the holes and the closest thing to being risky was spandex, but it was rocked with a oversized sweater. Now the mid-to-late 90’s might be a good jumping off point if you want to mark the beginning of the end. For me it was the first Hype Williams videos where I first saw images of women dancing like strippers. From there shit just got crazy in videos.
One thing is for sure - things have gotten worse and we need to get a handle on it.

To compare buying alochol underaged and wearing what’s considered an inappropriate outfit, is not a logical comparsion.
But to your comment, I feel that her outfit was TACKY in that isn’t not something one should would wear because it looks HOMEMADE & let’s leave the sunglasses but with the actual design of the dress and with HER SIZE I think that should have exercised better judgment, it pushes high school boundaries but too much for a prom, no, i think they should have let her wear it for the event and they could have giving her some form of punishment ie detention, saturday school but to not let her stay, i think was extreme.

She signed a contract for prom as every student there saying she would obide by the rules. The comparison was towards the almost 18 factor and the logic of it all is that the chile is a minor!!! and for her age (being under 18) and the event, the dress is/was inappropriate. The chile didn’t have on no “drawers”! No stockings. No thong! NO UNDER GARMENTS! I am not understanding why you’d say let her wear it and then punish her later? This child was aware of the rules and she chose to break them and then acted a “fool” when she wasn’t allowed admission. Therefore, the punishment fit the behavior and the attire. There is no reason why minorS should be walking the streets, not alone attending proms, half naked. Apparently when she realized the staff was serious about the attire she and the girlfriends tried to “pin” the tail of the dress up and around her for coverage . . .had she just followed the rules we all wouldn’t be having this discussion.

I’m sorry but that dress is not at all appropriate for a 17 prom goer. I’m a 26 year old

But you have to set a standard during school functions. As far as them handcuffing her, her lil’ behind was probably getting ignant with the school officials so handcuffin her lil ass was probably justified. I wasn’t there- But I do know her momma shouldn’t have let that baby walk out the door like that.. Race has nothing to do with it. Thank you #155! Preach child. This was one of the best quotes of this entire discussion. I am so sick of people using that stupid phrase. Anytime a black person in the public eye does something offensive somehow it reflects “all of us”. Oh please. Nothing that young lady did or any other black person who does something foolish represents who I am as a black person. The only similarity I share with them is our race and that is it. Nothing more!
Now back to the subject at hand. The dress was definitely inappropriate, and since there is proof of a dress code for the prom, which was shown in the video (it was a neon green flyer) then this girl has no room to get irate because she already knew the rules from the jump. So since she already knew the deal, the school was absolutely right to deny her access to the prom and not refund her money. She wasn’t thinking when she asked for her money back, because the school most likely already used the money on food, decorations, the DJ, etc. She just needs to count this a dumb decision she made which could have been easily avoided if she had followed the rules. Wearing a dress that was legal with the school dress code for 1 night wouldn’t have killed her. There are plenty of gorgeous dresses she could have worn. She has nobody to blame but herself for this.

Ok so to all of these people saying that they have seen worse…what the hell? What “worse” have you seen? Somebody in a Brazilian bikini and some stilettos? I mean really, all she had to do was cut that “tail” off of the back and she could have easily transitioned from evening wear to beach wear!
This isn’t news because she was banned it was news because she cut the monkey so bad that she got the police called on her and her ass arrested! On prom night you still have to adhere to the dress code of the school because why? IT’S A SCHOOL FUNCTION, DUH!!
I have never understood why people dress like this and think that they look good. I don’t care if that girl was 29, she still looks a hot ass mess.

And for all the people comparing this child’s dress to the Versace dress that JLo wore, there is a difference. JLo’s dress was more conservative and covered more of her body and most important…she was a grown ass woman and she wasn’t at no damn HIGH SCHOOL prom!

JADA,
Yes if you watch the video you see that they tried to pin the dress around her mid-secton, but the only thing that did was expose even more that she had on a crazy short skirt with no underwears on. Don’t Victoria secrets make special underwear to avoid the lining in the dress? Also since you watched the video I hope you saw the dress code rules on the neon green sheet. Lastly had they let that girl in and she was bending over in front of some boy and he stick his hand up under her dress, she would’ve been crying rape and trying to sue the school saying they didn’t provide enough security. Schools provide these rules to protect themselves, as well contain respect and protect the children. Because it was a school chaperoned event they had every right to tell that girl to leave since she disobeyed their rules. It is a lesson learned.

As a twenty one year old black female, I am very much embarrassed. Even if this young lady was white I would still be embarrassed because as a female I am so sick and tired of women dressing like this. Whether we as women are attendind our prom to just simply going to the mall SKIMPY dressing is not the answer. Why do some women dress this way? Is it because you want the attention of a man or men? Over 90 percent of Amercan’s women dress skimpy because they want attention from men. Wake up ladies, skimpy dressing will only get you that disrespectful attention that will in the long run ruin your reputation and/or will decrease you virtous value as a woman. If you have to get the attention of a man with your body then he isn’t meant for you in the first place plus he isn’t going to be attracted to you for the right reasons. A REAL man doesn’t desire a woman who dresses in such a manner however a boy will find it to be very pleasing for a short period of time. What seperates a man from a boy is his mental state of mind not necessarily his age. Always keep that in mind. What good are you if the only thing you have to offer to a man is your body? I don’t see rich men with integrity with women dressing like this. Doctors, lawyers, CEOs men with money and brains men who have the potential to take of you the way a woman should be taken care of wouldn’t give you a chance. Drug dealers are boys so they wouldn’t be included in the above list. Yeah many rappers rap about how their woman has to have a huge booty and big breast and she has to dress skimpy but that’s not who they choose to settle down with. They settle down with women who look the total opposite of the women they describe in their lyrics. Have some of you Skimpy dressers actually taken the time realize that the right man for you will love you for your personality and all of the other unique qualities you may have without you having to dress revealing. This music you guys listen to is only for entertainment it not for you to use as a reality guideline while living in the world. Many times the word skimpy is often substitued for the words sexy, classy, etc. This girl’s dress is not sexy or classy it’s nasty. A person can be sexy and/or classy without dressing skimpy. For example, I can be fully clothed with a pair of jeans and a sleeveless t-shirt but because I may have my hair hanging down in my face like a supermodel men may tell me that I’m sexy. Being sexy and classy is also determined by how you carry yourself. Do you respect yourself as a human, are you disrespecting yourself all the time, so forth and so on. Ladies we are living in a world that is often referred to as a MAN’s World. You have to know the rules and regulations of the Man’s World in order to stay on top. Skimpy dressers never stay on top. Think about it…why aren’t men showing just as much skin as women? I would love to see that LOL. Why are women viewed more as objects like a nice car than as humans? It’s okay to show some skin but show it in moderation, for example if your going to wear bottoms that expose a lot of your legs wear a shirt that covers most of you upper torso and vis versa. Everyone who reads this isn’t going to agree but for those who disagree it will only be a matter of time before you’ll see and understand exactly what I’ve typed about. For more information or advice or insight to the truth just post a comment with my name it with your question or concern and I’ll try to get back to it asap. One Love John 3:16

#19, this is national news cause it’s another pot shot at us (african americans) again, looking totally dumb and clueless. This girl really thinks that she was in the right. But I am glad that neither one of her parents had the gall to show their faces on TV. I can’t believe that this girl think that she has a leg to stand on in this case. I hope that they don’t give her back her money either. Maybe this will teach her a lady is suppose to dress, cause clearly her parents haven’t. I wonder want her date thought about this outfit. It’s sad. She’s graduating and still don’t have a clue.

There was a dress code and she did not conform to it. I do think she should have been given a refund. The dress was inappropriate period! I can’t believe her parents would pay for a dress like that for a child. If she wants to wear what she wants throw her own party. The rules are the rules. Black or White.

This is so unbiblical. What is happening in this world today. A comment was made that if this was a white girl it would be ok. That’s totally not true. This is so unexceptable. Parents step up and parent your kids. Teach them to respect themselves and others. Pray with them. My daughter 17yr old daughter has more respect for herself than to put something like this on her body.

That’s what that hood rat gets. I’m so sick of these bitches showing up at proms looking like $2 hookers. Prom has been turned into an event to see who’s dress is the most revealing without showing the nipple or labia. My prom was very classy and I went to a school no different then the school she possibly goes to but people respected their bodies in a way that they didn’t dress so raveling and that was no more then 3 years ago.
I know her cheep ass did not tie a $1 walgreens rose to her arm! And is that a stop watch around her friends neck??!!??!!
This bitch needs a serious ass whooping and shame on her momma for letting her walk out the house looking like that. I would have put my foot so far up her ass she’d be chewing it for breakfast.

honestly i think she was very dumb, wait no those are not the right words, she was very wrong to wear that…Why? well lets see…white or black, it dosnt really matter even mexican, everybody know the school dress code, i know i hated it and if i could wear skimpy ass close like she did, i probably would have as well. but people know that their not suppose to wear clothes in that nature, no matter what race it is. HELLO THIS IS TEXAS!?!?! their butt-holes over here! and another thing… her acting out on the issue is so rediculious, she should have known, and had a back up….its just common sense people….

I want to bang the hell out of her in that prom dress. Just seeing her in that gave me a giant hard-on. Where the heck were these girls when I went to school?

I think she was well within her rights to ask for her money back. If she wasnt allowed to attend, she should get back her money. About the dress, at my high school, we’re no longer allowed to wear dresses that are that “revealing” but I think they’re just fine. Times are changing and its less common to find a dress that’s “conservative.” No matter what you’re wearing, someone is going to have a comment!
