NEWS: Teen in skimpy dress banned prom & handcuffed

Monday, May 12, 2008

promdress.jpg

Teenager Marche Taylor was banned from her high school prom and led away in handcuffs after turning up in a skimpy dress over the weekend. She’d dared to bare her legs, shoulders and midriff in the risqué yellow outfit at the last sioree of Madison High School’s year in Houston, Texas. When the 17-year-old tried to get past door staff at the Sugar Land Marriott hotel’s ballroom, she was told she’d violated her school’s dress code. A confrontation turned nasty and police were called, escorting Taylor away in handcuffs.

This chic needs a BEAT DOWN! Where the heck were her parents? That is just unacceptable and my son already knows when it’s PROM time for him in 2 years, he better WATCH HIS DATE’S BACK! She should’ve been escorted out. Where is the respect and morals of these teenagers today? I’m VERY GROWN and wouldn’t wear that DRESS! SMH! Generation X

Where was her momma or did her momma make that dress. That was totally inappropriate! She also should not be graduating based on he language skills. Likeded is not a word.

Furthermore, why does she have that huge tattoo & tongue piercing. No one should be outraged by this.

No girl, white or black needs to wear a dress like that. It’s PROM, a school hosted event. How are her parents so lazy as to think it’s ok to let their daughter out wearing stuff like that? and then the same girl would no doubt complain if a guy touched her the wrong way. Stop inviting trouble. We do not live in some utopia where you can get away with wearing what you want like this. Real life don’t work that way. If it looks like a ho and dresses like a ho… what do you expect people to think???????!!! GAWD I am s sick of people cheering on this kind of behavior. Our women and girls walk around looking like hoes. If you do that I think you’ve given up your right to demand to be treated with respect when you have none for yourself. She got what she deserved. Only thing missing was the ass whooping at home.

there is absolutely no excuse or pardon for any female of any race to wear such an horrendous dress… that shit look like she ready to work the pole at the shakey butts…

she knew exactly what she was doin when she asked to have it made like that…&& yes i have seen worse, but its still no excuse…

damn, we have got to do better then this…it is just another reason for white people to make fun of us and talk more ishhh……

LETS GET IT TOGETHER PEOPLE….

23.

Miss. Tiandez Jones

i dont think there should be a dress code for prom, you should be free to express yourself however u feel comfortable doing so, thats garbage what they did. On that note, i must say that I have seen worse, even at my prom. The white girls came in some ish i cant even begin to explain..see through, cut outs, thongs all out, skin tight, no panties..yepp so be thankful its not her crotch we’re seeing. But yes where’s her mother and all those other girls mothers on a serious tip, because prom is a time to be elegant not trashy..and this look is trashy for a young lady like herself to be wearing anywhere.
With that said i disagree with how the situation was handled. Turn her away, yes..she already knew before hand that that type of get-up would not be approved, but the handcuffs, no no.
home girl looked a hot mess same way though, and after watching the video, its sad to see shes ghetto as hell and so young.

WTF

ok, so we have black women getting killed, kidnapped, raped, etc and the news hardly, if ever, cover that, but when a young black girl wears a promiscuous dress to her prom and is banned, OHHHH let’s put that shit all over the news.

Every station i turned to this afternoon had this story as a headliner.

So, black women can only get on the news when they’re portrayed as over-sexed, skimpy, ho-ish creatures, but when young black girls are kidnapped, when a young black woman is missing and her body is found dead, the media won’t talk about it?

i promise, every year around prom time, i see a major cover story on the local news, featuring a black girl wearing a skimpy dress. what’s the fascination?

28.

Ms.JayeL

I agree with you #27. She knew better, and so did her damn parents.

29.

Nichole261

Monday, May 12, 2008 /

Wow…I can’t say I’ve seen worse at my prom…but then again that was years ago…but none the less…it was inappropriate…sure it seems it could have been handled differently as far as handcuffs are concerned…but we don’t know the reasons behind the handcuffs…they only said “things got out of hand”. I think the school has every right to impose a dress code because it is a school sponsored function…if she was going to the club that’s different. SMH at some of you talking about if it was a “white” girl things would have been handled differently…and you know this how…I seriously don’t think race had any thing to do with it in this case…and some of you talking about you’ve seen worse at your prom…different schools have different policies…so there’s no comparison…

Uhhh who the hell cares about dress code? It is prom night the one time u can show the fuck out. I think it was in bad taste to reject her. She just showed some torso and legs I mean what the fuck is gonna happen. I don’t believe a school should have hand in telling someone what they can wear to prom. The outfit wasn’t even outrageous I have seen far worst. That school is a little too strict my old High School would have let her right in. Their is no reason for her to have missed her prom for such a minor thing.

36.

Uuum...

That is crazy! Ok, I must admit, I wore a two piece to my prom(2001). It was classy tho! My mom woulda never in her(37 years at the time) life let me get outta the driveway with this on! Everybody wants to test to see how lmuch ess they can wear every year and get into the prom. Its rediculous. Now some of these girls look cute, while others look like their just looking foward to after the prom. Im a young woman and I still dont understand it…Did her momma think it was cute or something?

That’s what I’m talking about. That was the worst example of parenting I seen in a while. That girl had a big ass tattoo on her chest. She 17 years old. Her mother is allowing her to be that way. And “oh PLEASE” to anyone who says this is expression. In ALL school in Texas (Dallas independant School Grad) The School dress code is highly followed. She knew she was not allowed to wear that and that why she wore it. plain and simple. Who allows there kid to walk around like that. And we wonder why our kids grow up to be rapper, drug dealer, and gruopies

This is really sad. I don’t understand why many young ladies don’t want to dress as young LADIES any more. Most MATURE men find a little mystery very appealing….vs. when you put it all out there, it’s not challenging and they feel no need to pursue the lady. The dress doesn’t even look like someone sewed it together…a twist here, a tie there, let’s tuck that there, and then VOILA!!! I can hear it now….’ooooooh girl, my dress gon’ be the $#!T…ya’ll ain’t seen nuffin like this befo’

here in houston, which is were this girl is from, certain schools require certain dress code standards for prom dresses. ive been out of high school for almost 10 yrs but i remember the prom being a formal affair. but in recent years ive noticed that it seems the tackier, the more home made the dress looks, the better or so according to these kids today. this girl was tacky and tasteless. she looked a messed and deserved to be arrested for this fashion mistake. madison is a ghetto school with ghetto people. this girl looks older than 18 so im not surprised about her choice of dress. im sure her parents are just as ghetto as she is and couldnt approve or didnt care too much about what she wore. pathetic

This doesn’t surprise me. I mean I’ve seen worst as well but at least she did have a memorable night and she got the world wide coverage that she wanted. So see fairy tales happen after all. But I agree that this was not major news and we have other things that the media could’ve reported on like a missing child or a mother who has been killed. Matter in fact why not give coverage to the black teen who came to the prom dressed nicely and who should be commended for bringing her/his grades up to a A grade point average this year. There’s so much that we need to focus on and this surely isn’t it. Sounds like a personal problem to me. Next time she’ll think twice. As teenagers we all had/have the tendancy to dress provactive but that’s why parents are so important because telling ur child “no” can prevent death, damages, fines, or at the very least public embarrassment. Thank you maaaaaaa!

Disgraceful & distasteful!! Where in the hell awere her parents/guardians? No parent in their right mind allows their child to exit the home in that skanky get up. She deserved to be banned, but the handcuffing was over the top and unnecessary. However, she should have been arrested by the FASHION POLICE for this piece of cloth!! And her parents arrested for child neglect!

57.

TRAILBLAZER

Monday, May 12, 2008 /

Also, being handcuffed might’ve been a lil extreme but at least she wasn’t maced or thrown to the ground and kicked….and that’s only becuz there were witnesses. She need to recognize that she’s in the dirty south and her ass just escaped what could’ve been a dire situation becuz they just looking for a reason to hang somebody ass from a tree down there. She need to piper down and find Jesus. GOD is good, HE trying to tell her something and probably saved her life that night for all she know…
Some men, including teenaged boys, out here are crazy and will rape her ass if she’s not careful…it’s not a game here out. Somebody need to tell her…GOD is trying to. Rapists look like everyone else and she might’ve got gang raped if she went to that prom and got loose afterwards. I can see the handwriting on the wall.

A prom is a school-sponsered activity, which means that the school does have the right to decide on a dress code. I think most would agree that dress is nowhere near appropriate for a high school dance. However, the school should have refunded her money.

Prom is getting tacky though next thing you know people going to be wearing daisy dukes to prom like they at some club or something. My parents would beat the shit out of me wearing something like that to the prom. And now that I’m grown they still would beat me because it’s just distasteful for a formal affair.Grown people (at least I hope not) won’t wear this either.I guess she doesn’t know any better. But if she refused to leave the premises since the school is sponsoring and they have a right to throw out, they could handcuff her, but not in a brutal way like you see when crackheads get cuffed. It may been a weekend, but that’s still like school property so, hey….

i'm gonna tell da truth

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 /

@23 Are you high girl? First you say that there shouldn’t be dress code at prom, but you should be able to express yourslef in whatever way you feel comfortable. Then you turn around dog her mama and friends and talk about how prom is an event of elegance and not trashy. Now which one is it? Come on girl get it together, are you having yourself a champange chronic nightcap? LOL!!! (That’s what playing in the background while I’m typing.) Now what if a girl who 5′10” weighing 338 lbs feel comfortable in the nude, would you want her dancing around you? I didn’t think so.

It’s a shame how some of you are condoning this. I bet not read some of you talking about how our community is in shambles when some of you are condoning what this DUMB, TRASHY NIGGA!!!! just did. I never use ni**a unless I think it suit the person, in this case it does. Then you wonder why women in general are disrespected. “YOU CAN’T DRESS LIKE A TRAMP AND EXPECT TO BE TREATED LIKE A LADY.” Grow Up people this very sad. We need to stop glorifying these video vixens and strippers because you know that’s exactly where this heifer is headed to. Hopefully she’ll get some sense before it’s too late. The ones who condone this should never become parents, we have enough idiotic parents out here, we don’t need more of you. This is another reason why we need the fathers in the household. We all know if her father was in the picture, there’s no way that girl would have made it out of her bedroom let alone out of the house looking like that. I hate to say that I’ve seen worse. It’s a shame that this girl don’t love herself like she should. SMH.

Seriously?? im sorry, but at my prom, the girls came so scantily clad it was disgusting and that was last year. Prom is supposed to be classy, not showing how many holes you can fit into what dress. my question is for the seamstress who MADE it. What the hell?! as an attendant to prom, i don’t wanna see half of your boobs and ass crack saying hello to me when we are all dancing to Shawty Lo! sheeeeesh. why can’t you just be classy and elegant? there NEEDS to be a dress code. or pasties and booty shorts will be all the rage. looking like Jay’s video, Big Pimpin.

77.

Juslisen

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 /

I see nothing wrong with the school officials not allowing the girl to attend Prom, dressed in that attire. Even if it’s Prom Night, it’s still a high school nonetheless and the majority of high schools have certain dress codes that need to be followed. In my old high school, we had dress codes that wouldn’t let us wear anything skimpy like that (such as anything showing our midriff or anything too short that left little to the imagination). This has nothing to do with her being black. The girl is dressed like she’s about to go to some club rather than a high school prom. Her mother should have never let her step out the door with that outfit on. Yes it will turn some heads and draw some attention I’m sure, but it will mostly be the wrong type of attention one should not want in the long run.

She’s a disgrace to African American Women all over the country, especially young ones. I do think the media over-hyped this though, maybe it was a slow day or something so the network got desperate; but national news? Handcuffs? Over one skanky looking high school dress? Soft news at its most frivolous…

every school has a dress code and that dress code applies to everything that deals with that school (ex. grad nite, senior breakfast, homecoming, and prom) because the student’s are still representing their school. she knew her school’s dress code and she violated it anyway. she looked like a cheap street walker. because she violated the dress code i think the school had the right to turn her away.

Definately not appropriate for a high school prom. Its hardley appropriate for anything for that matter. Did her parents see what she had on? Its not suitable for a teenager at all!

And please tell me what race has to do with it? Nothing at all. Just like I wrote yesterday about the jail statistics. We need to stop rallying behind shit that dont make sense. SHE WAS WRONG for wearing something so provacative and she WAS WRONG for not leaving when they asked her to. Had she worn what was appropriate for her age and for the function she wouldnt be in this mess in the first place!

I can't believe this...

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 /

This is in no way indicative of our future as a community, however it is indicative of poor parenting skills and lack of any iota of common sense, decency, and class.

This little girl doesn’t have the wherewithall to control her emotions, speak in a persuasive manner or carry herself in a way that will command the respect that she desperately needs.

The dress is just symptomatic of the core problem she is experiencing as an adolescent.

I understand wanting to show off your body at that age, most of us were somewhat the same way. Sure some girls wanted to do the whole princess dress thing, and that’s cool, but there were those, myself included, who wanted to feel grown. My prom was 11 years ago. I was an athlete in high school and I wore a dress that showed off my body. My dress was sexy and respectable. And it could go from the prom to an affair at the Ritz without any tongues wagging, except in appreciation. HOWEVER, I was also a national merit scholar, a presidential scholar, a volunteer, and had awards and a gpa that afforded me a full academic scholarship to one of the best schools in the country.

My parents were relentlessly strict, but because they raised me well, I was able to strike a balance with my choice in attire that didn’t alarm them or bring them shame, but still brought me the attention that I wanted.

Clearly, this girl wasn’t blessed with parents who understood that your attitude gets you further in life than anything else.

She, along with many of our young girls, need mentoring and not degrading insults. They need a man and woman in their lives to show them that there is a way to conduct yourself that gets you what you want while you maintain self respect.

The dress was outrageous, but the mentality that caused her to put on the dress in the first place should concern us more.

For those of you who think no one should tell you what to do, how to dress, how to act or any other thing, YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO LEARN. As long as you live on this earth, there will be rules. If you don’t like them, CHANGE THEM, but do not act all indignant as if the rules somehow don’t apply to you. Get over yourselves and realize that rules are there to serve a purpose. Take some initiative and discover the purpose behind them, and if you feel there is a better way to fulfill the purpose, do something about it. But don’t complain and act all ignorant, if you choose to just act ridiculous, and then cry when you have to suffer the consequences of your actions.

just pure trash. she is certainly disgracing our race. i doubt her or parents knew any better or the whole situation would have been prevented. yes it was a school hosted event, however the school still has a dress code regardless. she needs to understand that her decisions and actions do have consequences. she’s lucky if it doesnt effect her graduation.

Where were her parents cause i would’ve suggested that being the next stop for the police. Both child and parent needs to be arrested. At some point we all have to step up and be responsible here. Cause in my opinion if they can justify her in this dress then i can elect her the next candidate for R Kelly’s future video and justify that. “FREE R KELLY”

124.

Lady Architect

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 /

I first blame her parents or whoever is her guardian. They should not have authorized this dress to be made or worn by this young lady. She is 17years old and I could care less about how great her body looks it is not for show. This is how our young ladies are getting pregnant at early ages, get disrespected, get raped, etc. Parents are letting their children grow much faster than their time. If you wanna be grown let me see you work an eight hour shift, pay some bills, and invest. That’s what our youth need.

Secondly you cannot be mad at the school. Prom is not about being free to dress with the least amount of clothing. It has been a tradition for years throughout highschools containing the form of elegance and respect. Men dress is suits, women dress in gowns. My grandmothers would shake their heads if they saw these type of dresses cause back in their days prom was floor length gowns. Then it changed to being able to wear cocktail length dress now look what it has become. This is far from an issue of race, but more so an issue of proper parenting. The handcuffs were used because she got out of hand. Should she be refunded? No. You are not refunded for breaking rules. That’s why schools provide a handbook of rules with dresscodes etc. She violated a rule and that’s her own fault. Events like these are non refundable anyway because they are prepaid. Besides that this story was not major enough to be on all the news channels in my opinion.

125.

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 /

@106 I totally agree with you, this young girl doesn’t know any better,it’s a shame, some many young black women in this day in age are not taught how to be classy and respect themselves. I don’t blame her for thinking this was appropriate because she’s seventeen, whomever raises this child should have pulled the reigns on her tail, when they first saw her in that dress, there’s nothing wrong with trying to look grown and sexy for your prom, the problem is a alot of young woman,(not just black) assume the more reavealing the outfit=sexy and that’s totally not the case.

126.

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 /

1. Why the hell would she wear that to a high school prom anyway? She’s not going to the club. The outfit is totally inappropriate to wear to a prom, in my opinion.

3. Hopefully she, and others, will learn their lesson. We need to do better.

So good for her a$$!!! The dress didn’t have a hint of sex appeal to it, it looks like some ole BS that her neighbor stitched together and called it a dress. These girls coming out of high school are only 16/17 years old, they shouldn’t be dressing like “F-N” hookers on the stroll, they have all their adult lives to flaunt barely nothing. School officials need to crack down on the chicks coming to school like they about to do the pole dance. GOOD FOR HER AND I DON’T FEEL A BIT OF REMORSE AND SHE SHOULDN’T GET A REFUND!!!!!

@ 70 I’M GONNA TELL DA TRUTH

AND THAT’S THE DOUBLE TRUTH, RUTH!

Your comments pretty much sums up this whole shameful ass affair.

TO THE MEDIA: All it takes is one dumb stunt from one of our slow “country cuzinz” to set our shit back ten years. I’m not surprised that you jumped all over this. That’s just your evil nature.

TO THE GIRL: I bend my knees in prayer, because it’s obvious you do not know that the blissfully ignorant cloud you’re floating on is toxic. I pray that you wake up, and I feel sorry for you because of the public backlash you’re going to have to deal with at such a young age. Perhaps it’s all for the best and you’ll move on and grow up to be a strong black sister with some self-respect.

TO THE PARENTS: I hate to assume that this young lady probably does not have a father in the household because no man would let his daughter out of the house like this UNLESS there was something wrong with that relationship as well if you know what I mean. As for the mother, it’s IS clear that this sorry excuse is either cut from the same cloth, or just doesn’t give a damn. She should be forced to stand in front of her house with a big sign that says, “YES, I’M THE IGNORANT ASS WHO NOT ONLY LET MY DAUGHTER LEAVE THE HOUSE LOOKING A TEN CENT VERSION OF ANNA NICOLE, I THEN FED THE REMAINS OF HER SHREDDED SELF-RESPECT TO THE MEDIA FOR THEM TO FEAST ON. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SLAP THE SHIT OUT ME.”

And before we totally destroy this girl, let’s take a look at why she felt she had to express her self in this matter. What kind of physical or sexual abuse has she already endured that made her act out? Was it from her father, stepfather, her boyfriend, her mother’s boyfriend, uncle, brother, teacher?

Let’s pray for her.

If she refused to leave the premises they had a right to handcuff her because that would be trespassing, when it comes to prom, it’s school property. They really didn’t have to give her a refund either because they tell you when you paid for it, with no refunds.I can see the schools concern because this girl was probably going to pop lock and her cooch all the way out. It’s inappropriate.

Now that I look at the dress, I thought it was longer, but it short and it looks like a hooker dress. This is the kind of dress you wear to the club or you going to the beach or something.Since when women been wearing freakum dresses to prom-which is a public?I graduated in 2005, no way in hell none of the chicks I saw would wear ANYTHING like this because guaranteed your ass would be talked about on that following Monday and to the next day.Even the skank broads at my prom didn’t dress like this.I’m glad I didn’t see this foolishness at my prom.

The school has the right to enforce the dress code but to get arrested? I don’t know and for this stupid ass story to make headlines? Is just flat out retarded. Nobody on this site has the right to scold anyone on how to dress because that is not our job that is her parents or legal guardians job. I had to come back and re-read these comments for a second time. I don’t know you guys. I think I’m more bothered now by the people who don’t see anything wrong with this. I don’t care what race the girl was, what socio-economic background she has, or even her age.

An outfit like this has a proper time and place and a teenager’s high school prom isn’t that time or place. No matter what you say to me, you cannot justify this outfit (not dress) by simply saying “I’ve seen worse.” If you’ve seen worse than that says something too.

This is about what women do to create their own problems. We all want a certain degree of attention. We all want to find a partner who thinks of us as queens. but when women dress like this we’re asking for something else. When are we going to be self accountable? I’m sick of hearing so many women complain about lack of respect in their lives. For every girl or woman who looks like this and behaves like this, it’s all the more reason for males and other cultures to disrespect us. We have no right to complain about video hoes or strippers being the soup of the day. It’s no wonder that the media keeps playing up images like this of women and that music videos don’t change. We ACCEPT this crap so it will not change.

I don’t know why that is so hard to understand. How desperate are some of you girls for attention at any cost?

And to make matters worse, I’m sick of these “Great Glam” ads on this website. There is nothing galmourous about those hootchie clothes. Every outfit is meant for a stripper. Look up the definition of the word glam and it does not apply. I am angry at the company or people who think lookig like a whore is fashionable or glamorous. Every ad I’m looking at fake boobs.

And you wonder why we have so many problems.

I’m saying though it is trivial to complain about something that we can’t control. That is her parents issue and they will have to deal with it now before it gets worst. If you don’t want your child to come out like her tehn instill values in her because obviously no one told her about herself not even her own damn momma. She isn’t embarrassing black people she is embarrassing herself.

Wow…the dress *is* horrid. Aside from the color, the fabric, and the crooked seam on the side of the skirt, it looks like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen! Don’t people dance at proms?? Aren’t young ladies concerned about how they will be able to move around in their clothes?? If she made any kind of vigorous movement her top would have been exposed! If she sat down she would have had to cover her lap (maybe that’s what the train was for…OK who am I kidding the train wasn’t for that, lol). Some kids have totally lost it. They think the prom is like going “clubbin”. Or they go to the other extreme and you’d think they are getting married at Buckingham Palace. But it’s kind of sad when you get down to the root of it…they don’t know what’s appropriate b/c they haven’t been given many (or any) opportunities to get “dressed up”. They don’t know what it means. No one grows up playing in Mum’s or Nana’s jewelry and playing dress up anymore. Half of these little girls probably don’t know what a cocktail or evening dress is.

Tylernol & Carrie Ann made some VERY Valid Points.

A few things need to be pointed out.

- The reason why she was Banned from the Prom is because she did not have on any underwear (you will have to listen to the CNN report for the whole story).

- The Principal of the school also indicated that her dress was inappropriate.

- One day YOUR daughter will be going to her High School Prom.
How would YOU feel (blackisbeautiful, Juicy superstar, Shavar Jackson) if YOUR daughter wore a dress like that ???

@ 149

I got you.

But I respectfully disagree. The point I was trying to make is that this went national. That makes it newsworthy, pertinent to discuss and puts it in a whole other realm. We have to ask ourselves why did the media choose to exploit the poor choice of a young black sister who clearly doesn’t know what damage this exposure might cause her future.

And her situation might not affect you personally, but I feel much pain and sorrow for ANY of my sisters who feel they have to display themselves this way in public - unless she really is a hooker or stripper, then to each, as they say. But this is an underage child (I’ll assume she’s 17, and even if she’s 18, that still considered being a minor) and I, myself, find it sad.

I sometimes come here to post and I’ll joke and throw some shady shit around, but this is just not a joke for me.

And I do respect your right to voice your opinion, though.

Wow, the comments on this post are so deep … deeply offensive and misguided. There are truly some ignorant comments here and nasty attacks on the young girl and her mother. No one seems to even acknowledge the daddy or attribute any responsibility to him. There are two major issues here: 1) We pretty much agree the dress is inappropriate 2) Can we go deeper to talk about why it is that a skimpy dress receives more media than the vicious attacks and kidnappings of black women.

This is tricky because people want to show outrage and assert that all blacks aren’t like this. But in the course of critiquing the young lady, people don’t want to acknowledge the way the media manipulates these types of stories such that when black women are in the news its related to sex: Janet boob-gate and now this…

For those of you saying “black people need to do better” I’m disappointed because you’re basically validating the fact that this girl represents ALL of us. We are all individuals, so don’t you dare tell ME I need to do better when my decisions have nothing to do with her.

It’s cool and thank you for being respectful. I just feel that as black people we complain but yet we don’t do anything about it. Has there been any progress? I agree with alot of what you are saying though and you made valid points but is that going to change anything? I see alot of young sisters my age or younger that are dressing like that because their momma think its cute and they approve of it. I don’t dress like that to prom because I think it’s disrespectful to myself and to the school. Looking at it from a broader scope, I think that alot of us commenters tend to approve a revealing clothes on celebrities but when their daughter wears it or someone that is young that is related wears it becomes a problem. So maybe that is a start for us women to stop giving exceptions to celebrities. Many of us give excuses to celebrities and say they are grown but yet your daughter thinks it cute and is influenced by it and thinks that is the way to get attention because obviously celebrity get attention for the way they dress. Another issue is that some women give exceptions and is that “revealing and classy” rule. That shouldn”t be in the same sentence lol. If you don’t like revealing clotthes then don’t give exceptions it just makes people’s complaint sound contradictory. I understand your post and agree but yet I haven’t seen any progess.

That you and me are expressing our opinions is progress.
That these opinions, pro and con, inspire debate, is progress.
That a seed is planted and that we will most likely discuss this matter with others is progress.

That Each One Teaches One, one person at a time, makes a significant difference.

For example, you just taught me how to better temper my anger and not toss insults, which can sully the opinion I was trying to make in the first place. I don’t wanna get all feely and shit, but there you have it.

I came back to read some new comments about the situation. One thing I did learn from watching the coverage from the principals standpoint was that they were given a paper that stated the dresscode for prom and each student had to sign saying they would obey the rules. It also stated that if the dress code was not followed students would not be allowed inside. In that case I feel no type of remorse for this young lady.

My school was the same with the dresscode. When we payed senior dues we also signed a contract stating the dress code. On prom night everyone looked beautiful in their own way. Everyone did not wear the puffy princess dresses either. Some had beautiful form fitting satin dresses. In all wearing less does not make you look better at a prom. Be a lady not a street walker which is how she looked sad to say. Also at the age of 17 why are young girls obsessed with “sex appeal” anyways, but get mad at rude comments guys make towards them or mad when guys only want them for sex?

We don’t need you or your seed to add more to it………….The problem with the dress is 1) the girl is a minor 2) It’s a school function 3) It’s disrespectful not only for her but her family and those how put the event like prom in such high standards. People want to throw the black card because they don’t have nothing better to add, this so ridiculous, this have nothing to do with race. Nobody with high self-esteem should ever wear a dress like this. like I said before.

…………”YOU CAN’T DRESS LIKE A TRAMP AND EXPECT TO BE TREATED LIKE A LADY”
Women need to get it together. “It’s my body and should wear whatever I want.” Okay, but don’t be surprise when people don’t take you seriously or take for a hooker. We need to elevate our game. Men who find these kind of women attractive are just as much to blame. A real man want his woman to have love for herself. It’s to a man’s character as well if he finds these women attractive.

Each year, the prom pictures become more tasteless. Is this a south thing?? We all get these photos e-mailed to us in bulk. Remember the classic pregnant girl at the prom? Her dress… For the ones asking who are they to say??…HELLO, this is a “school”ceremony. The prom is suppose to be a classy event. What happen to feeling like Cinderella? Now days they feel and look like strippers. Not trying to make it a race thing, but I don’t see white kids dressing up like this. It is only our black kids. Glorifying pimps and hoes. This says alot about their up bringing. For this girl to even think it was all right to walk out the door with this on, says alot. This is so sad. This generation of children are lost. The 80’s sure made a lasting impression. We all know what was the big thing of the 80’s, and this is the result;unruly,no class, no morals, no ethics, proud to be nothing generation. You are suppose to put on your best. I didn’t see this until today, but I heard Michael B talking about it yesterday. It stayed on my mind. There are still some nice decent girls out there, but the numbers are so small, they are not being notice. Parents need to step their game up. And stop going on Maury and Jerry for help. What happen to decent parents? Follow this girl home and I bet you, an older version, hoochie momma will be laid up somewhere.
Now I would like to shout out the young ladies that where out yesterday getting ready for their prom..The young ladies at 34th st Sephora, you all made me smile. I can't believe this...

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 /

Why am I not mad at the media? Because the media’s purpose has changed over the years. The media’s purpose once was to be watchdogs over the government and other entities for the purpose of protecting the people. Today the media’s purpose is to get ratings. So although I do have a huge problem with the media’s coverage of black victims because there is an ugly disparity in how we’re covered, I am not angry with them for putting this mess on front street.

Just as I have an issue with how the justice system is unfair in sentencing and the like, I do not get angry when a black person acts up and becomes subject to the unfair treatment. The reason is…we know it isn’t fair before we cut a fool, so why subject yourself to it in the first place? It is called personal responsibility. It is one thing when you are innocent and you get mistreated, but when you are complicit in the situation, you get barely any sympathy from me.

At this stage in life, I realize some people don’t think like me, act like me, or believe like me. And I’m cool with that, however I refuse to succumb to the ignorance that is displayed in some of these comments.

Some people have put it very well, if you want to be treated like a lady (or gentleman) act like a lady (or gentleman). Now if you carry yourself like a lady and get disrespected, then I am all for you complaining and getting angry. But if you act in a manner that is personally disrespectful and then get disrespected, I have a hard time coming to your rescue. A lot of things we honestly bring on ourselves.

No disrespect. But it’s not a “generation thing” it’s an individual thing, think of the “hot mamas” or more risky ladies of your time, it was more TABoo then but now it’s more acceptable (NOT SAYING THAT’s a good thing) next time you walk in the grocery store look at the magazine rack and tell me how many TASTEFUL outfits you see vs. classy outfits that are not wedding dresses? Sex sells and it’s being pushed in our children’s faces, it’s not for the media, the school or anyone to educate our youth it’s our jobs as parents and leaders, so if you personally know any young ladies or men that dress what you consider “inappropriate” address it, don’t generalize that this is all the youth because it’s not. Depending on the family, church and or role models one has, it would determine how they decide to carry themselves. She’s more than likely months away from being 18 so to me (JMO) it seems silly to keep her from wearing something of that nature, I personally don’t think she looks like a stripper because she’s so thin, more of a tasteless MODEL, but don’t be judgmentatl, look within yourself and your shortcomings maybe you have the “classy style” on lock, but this child maybe intelligent, has a scholarship and from the looks of the dress, she probably designed and made it herself, she could be a designer?!

Most of your comments made since until the almost 18 clause. THEREFORE, until then she is still considered a minor and should “NOT” be allowed to wear what she wants and the event was a “high” school prom if she’s feeling that grown up being that she is almost 18, she should have opted for a night club as opposed to a “high school” prom where there are guidelines.

In a nutshell, the attire was not appropriate for a high school event.

We shouldn’t blame this 16 year old girl for her choice of dress. It should be expected with the majority of black women being seen on tv are video vixens or overtly sexualized actresses and singers. White women are shown as attractive women in every aspect of life. They are ones you see jogging down the way, or heading somewhere important in business attire, or they have the luxury of being picked up for dates in every day life. The women who look like her in mass media are dancing and girating in outfits just like that. So maybe she believes she is dressing the way black men would like her to because this is what is put in most videos wether they be rap, hip-hop, or r&b.

Good points, but generation wise, I don’t recall it being this bad in the “innocent” Whitney Houston days of the 80’s: Girls were still wearing the baggy jeans with the holes and the closest thing to being risky was spandex, but it was rocked with a oversized sweater. Now the mid-to-late 90’s might be a good jumping off point if you want to mark the beginning of the end. For me it was the first Hype Williams videos where I first saw images of women dancing like strippers. From there shit just got crazy in videos.

One thing is for sure - things have gotten worse and we need to get a handle on it.

To compare buying alochol underaged and wearing what’s considered an inappropriate outfit, is not a logical comparsion.

But to your comment, I feel that her outfit was TACKY in that isn’t not something one should would wear because it looks HOMEMADE & let’s leave the sunglasses but with the actual design of the dress and with HER SIZE I think that should have exercised better judgment, it pushes high school boundaries but too much for a prom, no, i think they should have let her wear it for the event and they could have giving her some form of punishment ie detention, saturday school but to not let her stay, i think was extreme.

The comparison was towards the almost 18 factor and the logic of it all is that the chile is a minor!!! and for her age (being under 18) and the event, the dress is/was inappropriate. The chile didn’t have on no “drawers”! No stockings. No thong! NO UNDER GARMENTS! I am not understanding why you’d say let her wear it and then punish her later? This child was aware of the rules and she chose to break them and then acted a “fool” when she wasn’t allowed admission. Therefore, the punishment fit the behavior and the attire. There is no reason why minorS should be walking the streets, not alone attending proms, half naked. Apparently when she realized the staff was serious about the attire she and the girlfriends tried to “pin” the tail of the dress up and around her for coverage . . .had she just followed the rules we all wouldn’t be having this discussion.

Thank you #155! Preach child. This was one of the best quotes of this entire discussion. I am so sick of people using that stupid phrase. Anytime a black person in the public eye does something offensive somehow it reflects “all of us”. Oh please. Nothing that young lady did or any other black person who does something foolish represents who I am as a black person. The only similarity I share with them is our race and that is it. Nothing more!

Now back to the subject at hand. The dress was definitely inappropriate, and since there is proof of a dress code for the prom, which was shown in the video (it was a neon green flyer) then this girl has no room to get irate because she already knew the rules from the jump. So since she already knew the deal, the school was absolutely right to deny her access to the prom and not refund her money. She wasn’t thinking when she asked for her money back, because the school most likely already used the money on food, decorations, the DJ, etc. She just needs to count this a dumb decision she made which could have been easily avoided if she had followed the rules. Wearing a dress that was legal with the school dress code for 1 night wouldn’t have killed her. There are plenty of gorgeous dresses she could have worn. She has nobody to blame but herself for this.

Yes Madison is a prodomiently black school but it has serviced NFL players, Doctors, Lawyers, NBA players, City Councilmembers, Olympic medalists, entrepreneurs and so on. Please do not ignorantly judge the actions of one student against all that Madison alumni (such as myself) have accomplished by labeling us as ghetto.

Thank you on behave of the class of 2000!!!

She had no business to be dressing like that in the first place and where were her parents? If she was a white girl, she would of got away with it. You can’t go to the prom or formal dance looking like trash you are suppose to look like a princess. All of us need to wake up for once and see what is going on in the AA community.

Yes, she tried to cover up, but they didn’t let her in because she wasn’t wearing any underwear under her 2 inch dress…..

@ebocka no pt. in making it a race issue. not too long ago, two white women were kicked off a place for wearing miniskirts that weren’t even that short. the thing is if you act belligerent, they’ll do something. there was another case of two white girl getting kicked off a plane. they said they weren’t drunk like the crew said they were and they said they didn’t act belligerent. they probably did so they got dealt with. same with this girl. she probably wouldn’t have been handcuffed if she had just went home and changed

Ok so to all of these people saying that they have seen worse…what the hell? What “worse” have you seen? Somebody in a Brazilian bikini and some stilettos? I mean really, all she had to do was cut that “tail” off of the back and she could have easily transitioned from evening wear to beach wear!

This isn’t news because she was banned it was news because she cut the monkey so bad that she got the police called on her and her ass arrested! On prom night you still have to adhere to the dress code of the school because why? IT’S A SCHOOL FUNCTION, DUH!!

I have never understood why people dress like this and think that they look good. I don’t care if that girl was 29, she still looks a hot ass mess.

And for all the people comparing this child’s dress to the Versace dress that JLo wore, there is a difference. JLo’s dress was more conservative and covered more of her body and most important…she was a grown ass woman and she wasn’t at no damn HIGH SCHOOL prom!

JADA,
Yes if you watch the video you see that they tried to pin the dress around her mid-secton, but the only thing that did was expose even more that she had on a crazy short skirt with no underwears on. Don’t Victoria secrets make special underwear to avoid the lining in the dress? Also since you watched the video I hope you saw the dress code rules on the neon green sheet. Lastly had they let that girl in and she was bending over in front of some boy and he stick his hand up under her dress, she would’ve been crying rape and trying to sue the school saying they didn’t provide enough security. Schools provide these rules to protect themselves, as well contain respect and protect the children. Because it was a school chaperoned event they had every right to tell that girl to leave since she disobeyed their rules. It is a lesson learned.

As a twenty one year old black female, I am very much embarrassed. Even if this young lady was white I would still be embarrassed because as a female I am so sick and tired of women dressing like this. Whether we as women are attendind our prom to just simply going to the mall SKIMPY dressing is not the answer. Why do some women dress this way? Is it because you want the attention of a man or men? Over 90 percent of Amercan’s women dress skimpy because they want attention from men. Wake up ladies, skimpy dressing will only get you that disrespectful attention that will in the long run ruin your reputation and/or will decrease you virtous value as a woman. If you have to get the attention of a man with your body then he isn’t meant for you in the first place plus he isn’t going to be attracted to you for the right reasons. A REAL man doesn’t desire a woman who dresses in such a manner however a boy will find it to be very pleasing for a short period of time. What seperates a man from a boy is his mental state of mind not necessarily his age. Always keep that in mind. What good are you if the only thing you have to offer to a man is your body? I don’t see rich men with integrity with women dressing like this. Doctors, lawyers, CEOs men with money and brains men who have the potential to take of you the way a woman should be taken care of wouldn’t give you a chance. Drug dealers are boys so they wouldn’t be included in the above list. Yeah many rappers rap about how their woman has to have a huge booty and big breast and she has to dress skimpy but that’s not who they choose to settle down with. They settle down with women who look the total opposite of the women they describe in their lyrics. Have some of you Skimpy dressers actually taken the time realize that the right man for you will love you for your personality and all of the other unique qualities you may have without you having to dress revealing. This music you guys listen to is only for entertainment it not for you to use as a reality guideline while living in the world. Many times the word skimpy is often substitued for the words sexy, classy, etc. This girl’s dress is not sexy or classy it’s nasty. A person can be sexy and/or classy without dressing skimpy. For example, I can be fully clothed with a pair of jeans and a sleeveless t-shirt but because I may have my hair hanging down in my face like a supermodel men may tell me that I’m sexy. Being sexy and classy is also determined by how you carry yourself. Do you respect yourself as a human, are you disrespecting yourself all the time, so forth and so on. Ladies we are living in a world that is often referred to as a MAN’s World. You have to know the rules and regulations of the Man’s World in order to stay on top. Skimpy dressers never stay on top. Think about it…why aren’t men showing just as much skin as women? I would love to see that LOL. Why are women viewed more as objects like a nice car than as humans? It’s okay to show some skin but show it in moderation, for example if your going to wear bottoms that expose a lot of your legs wear a shirt that covers most of you upper torso and vis versa. Everyone who reads this isn’t going to agree but for those who disagree it will only be a matter of time before you’ll see and understand exactly what I’ve typed about. For more information or advice or insight to the truth just post a comment with my name it with your question or concern and I’ll try to get back to it asap. One Love John 3:16

#19, this is national news cause it’s another pot shot at us (african americans) again, looking totally dumb and clueless. This girl really thinks that she was in the right. But I am glad that neither one of her parents had the gall to show their faces on TV. I can’t believe that this girl think that she has a leg to stand on in this case. I hope that they don’t give her back her money either. Maybe this will teach her a lady is suppose to dress, cause clearly her parents haven’t. I wonder want her date thought about this outfit. It’s sad. She’s graduating and still don’t have a clue.

There was a dress code and she did not conform to it. I do think she should have been given a refund. The dress was inappropriate period! I can’t believe her parents would pay for a dress like that for a child. If she wants to wear what she wants throw her own party. The rules are the rules. Black or White.

This is so unbiblical. What is happening in this world today. A comment was made that if this was a white girl it would be ok. That’s totally not true. This is so unexceptable. Parents step up and parent your kids. Teach them to respect themselves and others. Pray with them. My daughter 17yr old daughter has more respect for herself than to put something like this on her body.

That’s what that hood rat gets. I’m so sick of these bitches showing up at proms looking like $2 hookers. Prom has been turned into an event to see who’s dress is the most revealing without showing the nipple or labia. My prom was very classy and I went to a school no different then the school she possibly goes to but people respected their bodies in a way that they didn’t dress so raveling and that was no more then 3 years ago.

I know her cheep ass did not tie a $1 walgreens rose to her arm! And is that a stop watch around her friends neck??!!??!!

This bitch needs a serious ass whooping and shame on her momma for letting her walk out the house looking like that. I would have put my foot so far up her ass she’d be chewing it for breakfast.

honestly i think she was very dumb, wait no those are not the right words, she was very wrong to wear that…Why? well lets see…white or black, it dosnt really matter even mexican, everybody know the school dress code, i know i hated it and if i could wear skimpy ass close like she did, i probably would have as well. but people know that their not suppose to wear clothes in that nature, no matter what race it is. HELLO THIS IS TEXAS!?!?! their butt-holes over here! and another thing… her acting out on the issue is so rediculious, she should have known, and had a back up….its just common sense people….

I think she was well within her rights to ask for her money back. If she wasnt allowed to attend, she should get back her money. About the dress, at my high school, we’re no longer allowed to wear dresses that are that “revealing” but I think they’re just fine. Times are changing and its less common to find a dress that’s “conservative.” No matter what you’re wearing, someone is going to have a comment!
