POLITICAL ROUND UP: TONI MORRISON SPEAKS / CLINTON & CONTROVERSY / GRAVEL UPDATE

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Earlier this year, Pulitzer and Nobel prizes winner Toni Morrison caused quite a stir with her endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama for President of the United States.

In 1998, though, she called Bill Clinton the first black president, saying:

“Clinton displays almost every trope of blackness: single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonald’s-and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas.”

In a recent Time feature, Morrison explained what she meant by her comment: “People misunderstood that phrase. I was deploring the way in which President Clinton was being treated, vis-à-vis the sex scandal that was surrounding him. I said he was being treated like a black on the street, already guilty, already a perp. I have no idea what his real instincts are, in terms of race.”

When asked why she decided to endorse Obama, Morrison replied, “I thought about voting for Hillary at the beginning. I don’t care that she is a woman. I need more than that. Neither his race, his gender, her race or her gender was enough. I needed something else, and the something else was his wisdom.”

CLINTON & CONTROVERSY

Following the results of Tuesday’s Democratic primaries, in an interview with USA Today, Sen. Hillary Clinton explained, “I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on.”

She cited an Associated Press article which, “found how Senator Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me. There’s a pattern emerging here. These are the people you have to win if you’re a Democrat in sufficient numbers to actually win the election. Everybody knows that.

Although Clinton said her remarks weren’t meant to be divisive, many are remarking that this is the second instance of the racial dimension since Tuesday’s primaries. A chief strategist for the Clinton campaign, Geoff Garin, remarked, “We lost the white electorate in Virginia, started even in North Carolina among the white electorate just two weeks ago, and ended [with] a very significant win of 24 points among those voters,” he said, acknowledging that among black voters, Clinton “did not do as well as we would want or need.”

Clinton has vowed to remain in the race “until there’s a nominee.”

GRAVEL UPDATE

Where has Mike Gravel been? Apparently, learning “that Soulja Boy dance”.

In March, he left the Democrats and joined the Libertarian Party, saying: “My libertarian views, as well as my strong stance against war, the military industrial complex and American imperialism, seem not to be tolerated by Democratic Party elites who are out of touch with the average American; elites that reject the empowerment of American citizens I offered to the Democratic Party at the beginning of this presidential campaign with the National Initiative for Democracy.”

The next day, Gravel entered the race for the 2008 Libertarian presidential nomination, saying that he would have run as a third-party candidate all along except that he needed the public exposure that came from being in the earlier Democratic debates.

that toni morrisson is another idiot who thinks she knows the way every black person lives in this country. single parent household? not me, my father and my mother are still married after 25 yrs, yep 25 yrs…! junk food-loving? i dont think so ! sometimes some these people just need to shut up

as for hillary clinton, i think she knows she`s not getting the nomination and wants to damage the democratic party as much as she can so that in november obama goes to the election very weakened because make no mistake about it, republicans are waiting for him full force, they knew hillary was the candidate more capable of beating them and so she became their target, hillary made mistakes that cost her and the most prominent mistake she made was the fact that she had this sense of entitlement like it was her GOD given right to be the next president, and then she had these subtle words which she used to let those who have ears to understand that “i am white, aint nobody voting for a negroe“ unfortunately obama is not your typical definition of a negro, he has a white mother,
hillary i used to support but i guess as one of your supporters i`m gonna have to join team McCain 2008

See, that old ass bitch irked when she made that comment back in 1998 and it still does today. And what made it worse was to hear ignorant Negroes repeating it and finding it amusing. They rather call a white man “The First Black President” rather than electing a real Black Man to the White House. If you as an African American with an ounce of common sense, and self worth you should have found those remarks offensive. The only thing black men are known to do is cheat on their wives, eat fast food and play music. I am sorry but those are not black characteristics.

Clinton was just a cool dude! Getting in trouble for getting a BJ, lying and then fessing up…. just a regular guy and he didn’t mind letting the world know… not like these other gay, baby daddy politicians all talking snobbery toward him and all being found out that they were twice as scandulous…

Clinton was too cool that’s why they had to dig the dirt on him! Now Hil she was just playing cool cuz she obviously had something bigger in mind for her future at the time. but I’m sure if he had to do it all over he would get that BJ just the same! lol.. I bet Hil was givin him no love! lol..

What I really want is her to back up off the pantsuits and the deep voice she has been displaying..lol.. I mean really you are a woman please act accordingly just because you are running for Pres doesn’t mean you have to man up! It doesn’t help!

And that’s why she one a Pulitzer, the woman has sense. Its not the color of his skin that defines Barack Obama it is his wisdom, he seems genuinely committed to changing America for the better and even though he may not be able to everything he promises because he will have to compromise with the Senate and the like, he will definately do his best for all Americans!!

You know the crackers don’t have to be afraid that this black man will deliver the justice due to white folks for being the oppressors they were and in some instances they still are, he will work for them too, and that is why I believe in his message!!!

OBAMA for President 08!!

i actually think it’s good for the democractic party that clinton is staying in so long. people forget that when her husband was running, his party bid run didn’t end until june. if anything, they are getting out the issues that the GOP would have a field day with. besides, if she backed out, she would be doing a dis-service to her constituents and supporters who have been with her up until this point. it would be impossible for her to rebound in any future elections because her opponents would label her as a quitter.

and fyi i’m Obama all the way. i’m just in awe of the historic significance of this election and think they both should ride it out until the absolute end.

@ Dukesman2000

I just read your comment, and you know what it makes me sad for you. Toni Morrison is speaking obviously on her impression of Sen Obama, she may not know him or have spoken to him personally. His life experiences have defined and shaped who he is, is all she is saying. Do you know Sen. Clinton personally or are you voitng for your impression of who she is ? Whether one or the other gets the nomination, they are both Democrats and you vote for the Democratic Party. If John McCain can give you what you are looking for then so be it, but do not vote for him because Sen. Clinton is not the nominee. Another thing if you are a black man who will vote for the white man rather that one of your own who is qualified to do the job, then you are a twisted, self hating individual that needs prayers!!!

I CAN’T WAIT TILL THIS WHOLE MESS IS OVER…

Sources say Harvey Weinstein threatened to cut contributions to congressional Democrats.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Hillary Clinton supporter Harvey Weinstein threatened to cut off contributions to congressional Democrats unless House Speaker Nancy Pelosi embraced his plan to finance revotes in Florida and Michigan, three officials familiar with their conversation said.

Weinstein and Pelosi talked on the phone late last month, the sources said.

The three officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk publicly about the conversation.

They said Weinstein, a top supporter of Clinton’s presidential campaign, appeared determined to buy Clinton more time in her battle against Sen. Barack Obama by pushing for the revote. He was also pressing Pelosi to back off her previous comments that superdelegates should support the candidate who’s leading in pledged delegates in early June, the sources said.

Clinton supporters are saying that our black vote equals less than the white vote. Folks, we don’t count. This is her stance. Her supporters attempt to convince the public by repeating these views on the cable networks. She should be the nominee because BArack cant carry the white working class votes. THis is apparently the only vote that counts. The black vote is trivial and meaningless and should be ignored. Apparently, he is not deserving of the chance to win over these voters in the national election. I am so sadden by her comments and her stance on her loss. Hopeful that race has taken center stage in our country.
Her pathetic pleas of PICK ME AMERICA, I AM WHITE, AND HE IS A BLACK MAN and he’ll never win. Irony, she represents a party whose candidates have been successful due mainly to the black vote. She even goes on to insinuate certain states obviously dont count. Apparently, Michigan and Florida and all the other predominately white working class states are more important than some other states. She even has the audacity to weigh the importance of states: MORE IMPORTANT STATES= STATES THAT CLINTON HAS WON. Her family is fast becoming embarrassing. Go BARACK, Continue to ignore her pettiness. Yes, Clinton has loss to an unknown freshmen black senator.
Ignore Toni morrison, I have learn to recognize dementia in its earliest state.

This whole thing is ridiculous. Anything is possible of course, but I do not believe the Clintons are racist against black people.

And saying she is dividing the party, is not true. The party is already divided and it is foolish to think it is soley her fault. The Clintons have been painted as devils who are racists and trying to bring Obama down because he is black. ITS CALLED POLITICS FOLKS. Besides there are many Clinton supports who are refusing to vote for Obama and he is going to need their support. HE CANNOT WIN without them.

So while many Black folk believe Hillary is now a “shady racist”, we had better wake up to reality and know that the black vote alone is not going to put Obama in the White House. The Obama campaign has a lot of work to do to heal the wounds created from this election process. There are a lot of people out there who feel Hillary was treated unfairly and are bitter, and I cannot say I am not one of them. I will vote for Obama because I can see the bigger picture, but I will do so with zero enthusiasm.

I just don’t know…..my “spidey senses” are tingling about Obama and have been since he announced his bid for president, and I can’t seem to shake it. I hope I’m wrong.

I don’t think Toni Morrison cleared anything up. All she did was backpeddle on a statement that she now sees as clearly being ignorant. Her description of Bill Clinton’s “blackness” in 1998 was rooted in common stereotypes. I actually found it disappointing that someone of her obvious talent and intelligence could make such a ridiculous statement, especially in public. It trivialized the ugliness of our history with this country. Even though I am not a supporter of Senator Obama, if he became our next President, I would certainly be proud of such a milestone in our nation’s history, the election of the real first black President and not some cheap substitution.

Um… it hasn’t been the black vote alone to get him this far, jack azz. We know that blacks only make up a small percentage of the US and with you Uncle Toms onboard, that number is even smaller. (LOL! Damn, I’m funny as hell)! I am sure Obama knows how to rally for what he needs to make the best show in November. Go on over to Plantation McCain! The rest of us will try out this new underground railroad system to freedom while you basque in whatever scraps the white man throws your way from his slop bucket!! (LOL! If you really want to know who the Clinton’s are, watch this very interesting documentary on the corruption they were involved in, back in Arkansaw, and brought with them to Washington. The documentary contains interviews with police officers, lawyers, and politicians from Arkansaw.
This documentary really tell you who the Clintons really are under their phony smile.

What is with HC always making something about race? She is always trying to win over somebody’s race. One day its black people, then its the Latino people, and now she trying to win over the working-class white people. Always putting people in a category just to win a damn election. I started off liking her but now I’m just disgusted with her behavior, and how she’s using any tactic to win the nomination. All her negative campaigning has bited her in the ass.

Criticizing Obama saying that he can’t win over a certain type of race. I just wish Obama would hurry up and get a clear lead in the delegates so she has no way of getting back in it, so she can leave and go out with at least some dignity left. But I doubt that she’s going to leave early, she’s going to stay in it until the end.

I will always have respect for Toni as a literary genius but I will never forgive her for those comments. Its as if to say that black community is so dysfunctional and abnormal that anyone who comes from similar backgrounds should align themselves with black people. I’m not trying to sugarcoat the problems we do have in our community, but I didn’t like that she aired out business out there in the worst way. It was tres insulting to imply that because a white person didn’t grow up with the Leave-It To Beaver upbringing that they must have a deep connection with all blacks because not all of us are struggling to deal with daddy issues or broken homes; not all of us come from broken homes; and not all of us have the same moral compass as Bill Clinton.

Saying that it will take white working people’s votes to win is not a racist remark. It’s sad but true that the black vote respresented only 11% of all votes in the last election. Obama can’t win with that. He will have to get some of his loud mouth supporters to tone down the anti-white, Anti-american stuff or he doesn’t have a prayer against MCcCain. would you vote for someone who hated you?
