POLITICAL ROUNDUP: OBAMA DISTANCES HIMSELF FROM CLERGYMAN / CLINTON FACES PRESSURE / MURDOCH PREDICTS OUTCOME
Friday, May 30, 2008
On Thursday, Sen. Barack Obama said he was “deeply disappointed” by a supporter’s sermon at Trinity United Church of Christ that mocked his Democratic nomination rival Sen. Hillary Clinton.
Michael Pfleger also apologized for Sunday’s sermon in which he said Clinton felt “entitled” to the nomination and that “there’s a black man stealing [her] show”.
In a statement from the Obama campaign, the candidate said: “As I have traveled this country, I’ve been impressed not by what divides us, but by all that that unites us. That is why I am deeply disappointed in Father Pfleger’s divisive, backward-looking rhetoric, which doesn’t reflect the country I see or the desire of people across America to come together in common cause.”
Pfleger, the white pastor of predominantly black Saint Sabina Roman Catholic Church, said he regretted his choice of words: “These words are inconsistent with Senator Obama’s life and message and I am deeply sorry if they offended Senator Clinton or anyone else who saw them.”
Clinton’s campaign denounced Pfleger’s comments: “Divisive and hateful language like that is totally counterproductive in our efforts to bring our party together and have no place at the pulpit or in our politics,” the campaign said in a statement. “We are disappointed that Senator Obama didn’t specifically reject Father’s Pfleger’s despicable comments about Senator Clinton, and assume he will do so.”
CLINTON FACES PRESSURE

Sen. Hillary Clinton has been under pressure to quit the race. However a new pressure has emerged from Democratic Party leaders who are sending messages to superdelegates urging them to make a choice once primary voting ends Tuesday.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Peolosi are intent on bringing the nomination battle to an end so the Democrats can focus their attention on the general election. “We’re going to urge folks to make a decision quickly — next week,” Reid said in a radio interview in Nevada. “We agree there won’t be a fight at the convention.” Pelosi has said that if the nomination was not settled by the end of June, she would step in to resolve it.
With only three primaries left — Puerto Rico on Sunday, South Dakota and Montana on Tuesday — Clinton trails Sen. Barack Obama by about 200 delegates. However, she is hoping to revive her candidacy on Saturday when the Rules and Bylaws Committee meets to resolve a dispute whether to seat delegates from Florida and Michigan. Clinton won both states in January, but because they violated party rules by holding their elections too early, the results were nullified. Clinton wants those votes to count and if that happens, she would pick up over 100 more delegates than Obama. Although that would not put her in the lead, it might allow her to plead with superdelegates that the race was close enough to give her the nomination.
MURDOCH PREDICTS ELECTION OUTCOME
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has some bad news for presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain: You’re going to lose. Big time.
At a conference earlier this week, the News Corp. chairman said, “You have got the Obama phenomenon. You have got, undoubtedly, a recession…The average American is really getting hurt financially and that all bodes well for [Obama]. You have probably the making of a complete phenomenon in this country.”
Murdoch, who calls himself a friend of McCain, said the Arizona senator has made so many compromises that it’s unclear where he stands on the major issues. He thinks Obama will have an overwhelming victory and also praised the Illinois senator, calling him a “rock star”.

Saturday’s decision by the Bylaw and Rules committee will be very interesting. I have mixed opinions because while I don’t think it’s fair that MI and FL delegates will not be seated at the convention, they did violate the rules and both Clinton and Obama agreed not to campaign there. Obama took his name off the MI ticket, so Clinton cannot rightfully claim that as a win. Also, Obama didn’t campaign in FL and many were not as familiar with him them, as they are now. I really hope these SD’s come forward to end this mess. Obama only needs 41 delegates to reach the magic number!
As always: REGISTER TO VOTE!!!!

Wow! Shut up! I can’t believe the old Ruler of the Media World Rupert…actually said that…I still can’t stand him….anywho he’s right about the whole Barack thing…
Okay now as for Father Pfleger…what he’s said was quite funny and true! I actually laughed everytime they showed it…I personally think that I will go to his church on Sunday just to hear one of his sermons. I mean come on, Hillary’s “tears” were as fake as [insert whatever you own that is a knock off weave, coach bag, monolo’s] it was a total publicity stunt and now she’s trying to drag this whole political race on until august because she can’t seem to face the fact that the people didn’t choose her (nor did the delegates)…she’s sooo thirsty and quite pathetic. But on a lighter note she would make a great Vice President!

great post, J. I really hope Clinton throws in the towel soon. If this goes to the convention at the end of August, then Obama will only have September and October to travel the U.S. and make his stand. That is not enough time to combat against McCain in rallies and in televised debates.
Even if Hillary somehow wins the nomination in August, she also will only have 2 months to formally campaign as the Democratic hopeful, and the Vice President hopeful needs time as well to campaign.
Democrats, we are running out of time!!

O’Reilly can’t really say anything in opposition to Murdoch’s statement…simply because Murdoch can fire him…however he might let something slide through just because he’s super outrageous when it comes to those liberal supporters…but not to much slander because Murdoch is the one in charge of Fox and everything else in the media world…

GREAT POST! Im not going to say I agree with everything Father Michael said because making it a race thing did take it a little too far…but Hilary did feel very much entitled to the presidency, and she did underestimate Obama because she felt he didnt have the “experience” to even be a threat to her campaign.
Clinton needs to bow out and should of done so months ago. It’s already been determined that if they do seat the delegates from FL and MI that by law they CANT seat ALL of them. So even if she gets what she wants Saturday, Obama will still have the lead.
I’m proud of Obama! He kept it pretty clean throughout the campaign and didn’t let a lot of the ups and downs of this process to break him. He emerges from it all stronger and more competent in my eyes to lead this country and bring about the change we desperately need. OBAMA ‘08!!!

Obama needs to stay focused and above the foolishness. He can’t be wasting his time responding to every offensive comment made by people he knows or who support him. Just like everyone else in the world he can only be accountable for what he says — we all have family and friends that we love and support, but we don’t always agree with them -
He may as well make the broad statement ” I am not responsible for anything unless it comes out of my mouth”.

Maybe Obama needs to change churches. The reason why people think he’s ok with the mission statement and the remarks flowing from the pulpit is because he keeps on attending and paying his tithes there. I getting a little confused myself.
Oh please on Rupert Murdoch. This is the guy who is responsible for Myspace, and the fox news network. This is not the John F kennedy election where obama will be able to buy and favor out the presidental election( that how Rupert Murdoch handles all his competion just as the family that us to own the wall street journal) at this point in the race they are neck and neck with Mccain slightly head in the approval rate. At this point its anybodys game.

Just because you are well off there are people that are not so while dragging this on does not effect you (i use that loosely). I definitely affects the rest of us. Your time has come. I don’t understand how come everytime someone says something about Clinton the media always wanna blame Obama yet in West Virginia those people openly said they don’t wanna see a black man as President and Clinton gets no blame. Come on now. Either you blame them both or you blame no one. Personally you can’t blame the candidates for what people say, but I didn’t see Clinton make a statement about people in West Virginia being racists. In fact she celebrated her win there saying if you can’t win West Virginia you can’t win the general election.

I just want to know what is up with the security in Trinity? After the whole Wright fiasco, they shouldn’t even allow video taping of any of their services. I’m starting to think that they are taping and selling the tapes for profit themselves.
Now Father Pfleger has a church in right in the hood on the Southside and is a very popular and well known father in Chicago. I don’t know how this will affect him but I do know one thing, it was one of the most funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. He was preaching like a baptist pastor not a Catholic father. I may have to pay St. Sabina a visit when I am in the city….lol
I wonder why these sermons are blown up like this but when the supporters of Repubican nominees make racists or insensitive comments, you will see them in the news for a 30 second segment and then never again. This has nothing to do with Obama because I’m sure that he will not EVER be seen in Trinity again and Father Pfleger is not his clergyman. Get over it media…Obama is your next President!

Father Mike and preachers like him are the reason people stay away from churches. What does Hilary or Barack have to do with the message of a loving God? They ruin the church/religious experience for intelligent people who are going for a true message. Thumbs down to them all. I’m glad I stay home on Sunday morning and do my own thing.
Props to Murdock! He’s just calling it as he sees it. Besides the fact that McCain is a war hero, what else does he really have going for him? His policies will not move the country ahead and we really don’t need a 3rd term of Bush policies.
Hilary needs to step down. I like her, but sometimes you just have to face the facts. It’s over Mrs. Clinton. You had a good run, now fall back and support your party like a true democrat. After all, it’s not about Hilary or Barack, it’s about the party and the country and Barck is cleary the man for the job.

Obama has spent his entire political career trying to win the next step up. Every three years, he has aspired to a more powerful political position.
He was just 35 when in 1996 he won his first bid for political office. Even many of his staunchest supporters, such as Black, still resent the strong-arm tactics Obama employed to win his seat in the Illinois Legislature.
Obama hired fellow Harvard Law alum and election law expert Thomas Johnson to challenge the nominating petitions of four other candidates, including the popular incumbent, Alice Palmer, a liberal activist who had held the seat for several years, according to an April 2007 Chicago Tribune report.
Obama found enough flaws in the petition sheets — to appear on the ballot, candidates needed 757 signatures from registered voters living within the district — to knock off all the other Democratic contenders. He won the seat unopposed.
“A close examination of Obama’s first campaign clouds the image he has cultivated throughout his political career,” wrote Tribune political reporters David Jackson and Ray Long. “The man now running for president on a message of giving a voice to the voiceless first entered public office not by leveling the playing field, but by clearing it.”

As a community organizer, he had helped register thousands of voters. But when it came time to run for office, he employed Chicago rules to invalidate the voting petition signatures of three of his challengers.
The move denied each of them, including incumbent Alice Palmer, a longtime Chicago activist, a place on the ballot. It cleared the way for Obama to run unopposed on the Democratic ticket in a heavily Democrat district.
“That was Chicago politics,” said John Kass, a veteran Chicago Tribune columnist. “Knock out your opposition, challenge their petitions, destroy your enemy, right? It is how Barack Obama destroyed his enemies back in 1996 that conflicts with his message today. He may have gotten his start registering thousands of voters. But in that first race, he made sure voters had just one choice.”
———–
One other opponent who Obama eliminated by challenging his petitions, Gha-is Askia, said he has no hard feelings today about the challenge and supports Obama’s presidential aspirations.
But back at the time he was running for state Senate, Askia said, he was dismayed Obama would use such tactics.
“It wasn’t honorable,” he said. “I wouldn’t have done it.”
He said the Obama team challenged every single one of his petitions on “technicalities.”
If names were printed instead of signed in cursive writing, they were declared invalid. If signatures were good but the person gathering the signatures wasn’t properly registered, those petitions also were thrown out.
Askia came up 69 signatures short of the required number to be on the ballot.
Kass, the Chicago Tribune columnist, said the national media are naive when it comes to Chicago politics, which is a serious business.
He said they have bought into a narrative that Obama is strictly a reformer. The truth, Kass says, is that he is a bare-knuckled politician. And using the rules to win his first office is part of who Obama is.
“It’s not the tactics of ‘let’s all people come together and put your best ideas forward and the best ideas win,’ ” Kass said. “That’s the spin; that’s in the Kool-Aid. You can have some. Any flavor. But the real deal was, get rid of Alice Palmer.

We meet again!!!
Please people raise your hand if you saw the movie “Sicko”….If you recall, there is one part dedicated to Mrs. Clinton.
Apparently, Mrs. Clinton had a bright idea (stolen from Canada, France and Britain of course) to nationalize the health care system. She was given this position by her “faithful” husband. Why doesn’t America have a nationalize health care system? Wouldn’t we assume that super hil-Clinton would have saved us? She didn’t!! ACTUALLY, SHE GOT BOUGHT BY A PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY….GO FIGURE!
She lied about Kosovo/Serbia…and then wht else?

Can Hillary give it up already and try to get on someone’s good side before she destroys her and Bill’s goodwill with black folk sand legacy entirely? Can they not see that they are destroying any future political credibility through the veil of white supremacy and entitlement?

People are angry because Obama abided by the rules when running in Chicago. I just love it. Either he is too soft or too this, or too that. Look all of this boils down to WHITE FOLK HATING TO SEE A BLACK MAN SUCCEED IN WHAT THEY BELIEVE IS THEIRS. Many news commentators realized that this was another far fetched attempt to discredit Obama. I guess Obama is responsible for everything that anyone who claims any connection with his says. It’s amazing how Hillary has not really been called on the carpet for her JFK comment or her half hearted apology. I completely agree with the rev. Some friends and i were talking about the real motivation for her is a deep down racism that who is this black man to challenge me(white). Its the same reaction you would get from challenging a white co-worker. The pastor was right on point and said what we were already thinking. I can’t believe he said the “D” word in the pulpit. Now that takes the cake! It was really funny and too true.

WOW .. i almost cried… i never thought i would see a “white” man stand up for our people how he did. im very proud and overwhelmed by his passion. I also watched several other linked videos of his and im in aw.
the first blacks were brought over to the US in 1619.
Thank you soooo much REV!!!. I will always ask people of non color this question.
“what did we do to deserve rape and the devastation of Africa for 4 to 5 thousand years?
“whats wrong with our uniqueness as people?”
“why were we denied a culture, why do you get mad when we stand together?”
“What makes you better then, me, we’re both different?”
“What makes it okay to put down people of color and you enslaved us to build your railroads, etc?”
“Do we not deserve credit, land, financial stability for our precious brown babies?
“WHo do you think invented the telephone, gas mask, the light buld, the first stop light, peanut butter, parts for ibm computers, performed the first open heart surgery, just to name a few?

Yeah, Father Pfleger has always been something else.
Here in Chicago, it’s not so much about black and white as it is about class. You have understand that this is one of the most segregated, and problem-riddled, cities in the country.
People outside of Chicago were so shocked at what Revs. Wright and Pfleger said in their sermons, but the people who live here, whether if they agree or not, understand where those two men are coming from. They actually do speak for the people, so whatever they are saying represents what the community has had issues with for years.
And another thing, America is afraid to look itself in the mirror, that’s why commits like the ones the revs. made were so quickly thrown into the racist/insensitive box. Well, if you see where black people, and some other minorities and low/working class individuals, arose from back in the day, and where a lot of us still are, you’d understand the frustrations coming from the mouths of these preachers.
Nonetheless, to keep playing this idiotic game of six degrees of separation with Obama is trivial and a waste of time. Let the man talk, and demonstrate, how he’d handle the REAL issues in this country like, poverty, education, unemployment, health care. I mean, those are some of the many things that need to be focused on—anything else is extremely irrelevant right now.

Whiteness is no secret! The TRUTH will continue to be spoken. Obama should continue to apologize, if that makes "them" happy!
Saturday, May 31, 2008 /
Phleger’s words: These are words that needed to be said. They’ve always needed to be said, for the past 400 years that this country has served white men, and underserved everyone else!
Let these words continue to be said, in public places. The black church has always been a safe place to say these words, and they will continue to be said.
Obama will continue to apologize, b/c that his job - he’s gotta do, what he’s gotta do to keep the white rich and powerful people happy. But he knows, just as much as the white people who are the object of Phleger’s criticisms, that the words are true!!!!
White entitlement - White privilege - “Whiteness” (as it’s scholarly called) is no secret. It’s simply undiscussed in public places!!!! Yet, it is no LESS known than “Black Power” was in the 70’s!
In fact, it isn’t even have to be discussed. Walk through the halls of any corporate America office building, and who will you see ???? Maximally, you’ll see 4-6% Blacks!!!!! And it doesn’t start with CA (corporate America)!!! It goes all the way back to Kindergarten, when children are being disciplined and rewarded. When children are being selected for certain classes. When BEH and ADD labels are being applied to OUR CHILDREN!!!

@ 41 MS. DYNOMITE
It’s pretty pathetic that the worst dirt you can dig up on Obama is yet another episode of him playing by the rules. For every lame attempt you make at digging up “dirt” on dude, I can give you 5 solid atrocities from your favorite Watergate scheming, lying ass commando, race-bating, undercover republican.
But that is aside the point. For a Puerto Rican broad, it’s pretty bold of you to come on this joint and be condescending to black folk. Anyone can run a simple search on your CL and see multiple instances of you insinuating that blacks are stupid or ignorant. Either that or you make unwarranted assertions on how blacks should think or feel. Are you out of your living mind? Don’t come on this site with that patronizing BS.

How is this sermon “the truth” what basis are you calling it so? And, more surprisingly, how is it entertaining–especially given that it is at the expense of another?
Is it the truth because it satisfies your complacent and unchallenged spirit?
It’s ironic that this man talks about Hillary playing the victim but his doctrine fully allows african americans to be the victim. And we eat it up.
Keep being the victim, keep being angry, keep being illogical, and that is all you will ever be.

At this point in the game I think we should take the approach Obama is taking: to not even dignify Clinton with a comment. She doesn’t matter anymore. And that’s what infuriates her campaign team the most. Obama is focused on McCain and winning the White House.
If we subject ourselves to apologizing for every sound bite someone made in some church in Chicago or a Union meeting in Kalamazoo, we’ll never be able to stay on point and on message– which is “enough of the same old politics. Time for change.”
I live in France but am an American. And I can honestly say, the majority of Europeans I have spoken to are enamored with Obama. The press loves him and hopes beyond hope that he will become president.
There hasn’t been this kind of excitement for an American election since Kennedy. And by the way, Clinton is not the first female running for president. Have we forgotten Shirley Chisholm? Throw out the “I’m a woman and that’s why I’m being attacked” argument right there. How about a Black woman who ran for President? Where do the Clinton supporters fall on that issue?
I am proud to see the passion that new voters have garnered for this election. I hope and pray that Obama will be my president…
Someone send me a YES WE CAN! shirt– damn.

#3 I know!!!!!!!!! lol I was surprisesd by that too, because I know my priest wouldn’t even go there like that.
Rupert Murdoch is a business man, he’s gotta jump on the bandwagon because to him it means $$$. Which makes me sort of suspicious of his motivations. If anything he and other representatives of greedy corporations are to blame for this country’s economic misfortunes and the dwindling of the middle class. Why would he be in support of a candidate that could potentially change that?

I still don’t get what you all see as “the truth” in what this pastor says. Just as much as he claims that hillary feel that this is owed to her because she is white, you could make the argument for Obama. Just because he is black we can just overlook his glaring inadequacies because for some reason, it has become politically incorrect to call it like it is.
I have a problem with we as a people continuing to look for excuse after excuse to explain our glaring problems. Why do we keep looking for excuses and fail to look for SOLUTIONS? Because we have become complacent and through our complacency we have become entitled.
I’m a high school math teacher and I can’t even begin to tell you the sad state of black american youth. I can’t even begin to tell you how our administration continues to make bullshit arguments as to why this is the case. From school desk size to the temperature of the room all bullshit excuses to explain away our problems and we sop it up like TRUTH.
I really hope that Obama wins because when he does, all of your racist views and white grudges will become irrelevant. You can’t blame the past anymore because people like Obama have created a future. Be careful who you vote for because although many of you want so badly to have a black president, many of you still do not want to move away from the past.
