POLITICAL ROUNDUP: OBAMA’S LATEST MATERIAL / FIRST BLACK FEMALE SPEAKER

Analysts are suggesting that Sen. Barack Obama appeal to evangelicals to win Kentucky next week. According to a recent Rasmussen Report, Sen. Hillary Clinton is leading the state by twenty-five percentage points, 56 to 31. In preparation for Tuesday’s event, Obama’s campaign is distributing fliers that depict Obama in the pulpit with a cross overhead.

The flier recounts the day that Obama became a committed Christian: After graduating from Columbia University, Barack Obama moved to Chicago’s South Side to work as a community organizer in neighborhoods devastated by the closing of local steel mills.

Obama forged a profound connection with the people of these communities. At their encouragement, he visited a local church one Sunday. That day Obama felt a beckoning of the spirit and accepted Jesus Christ into his life.

The Obama campaign is also enduring some much less positive promotion. Mulligan’s Bar and Grill in Cobb County, Ga., is selling t-shirts with a picture of Curious George peeling a banana, with the words “Obama ’08″ underneath.

According to the AJC, the bar’s owner, Mike Norman, acknowledged the imagery’s Jim Crow roots but said he sees nothing wrong with depicting a prominent black person as a monkey.

He said, “We’re not living in the (19)40′s. Look at him…the hairline, the ears — he looks just like Curious George.” A few months ago, a caller on the Rush Limbaugh Show referred to Obama as Curious George. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the publishing company that owns the Curious George image, says it is considering legal action to stop the sale of a T-shirt depicting Barack Obama as the monkey from children’s books.

FIRST BLACK FEMALE SPEAKER

Check out the video of Karen Bass being elected the first black female Speaker of the California Assembly. Bass took office on Tuesday and is the first black woman in the history of this nation to lead a legislative house.

Who in their right mind would not see anything wrong with depicting a black person as a dang monkey? All I can do is shake my damn head! I can only imagine how its going to be if Obama becomes president!!

  5. LOL @ Curious George. What will they think of next.

  6. K LONG BEACH

It’s the Jim Crow’s south worst nightmare a strong postive Black man is going to soon be their leader whether they like it or not. Let them have their primative fun, its a last ditch effort to be heard. So lets NOT hear them.

  7. yeah_okay

    I’m fucking pissed OMG!!!

  8. Eve

Its wrong and offensive but I do see the resemblance…got to be honest

  9. WAKE UP!!

oh yeah….obama and the monkey does NOT look alike

  12. blackisbeautiful

erm he needs to becareful becase using Obama as a monkey does not sit well with Blacks in general.

Gone ahead Karen Bass do your thing!

  13. Miss Independent

Oh Hell no!!! This is 2008, right? It kills me how people have the nerve to say that racism no longer exists. Why can’t people move forward? Why must they keep doin’ the same ‘ol shit?

  14. Lola Am

  15. IAMDARKAQUA

I’M NOT FEELING THE CHURCH PROGRAM LOOK..EITHER PEOPLE ARE FOR U OR AGAINST…SIMPLE AS THAT. THE PEOPLE OF KENTUCKY HAD ENOUGH TIME TO MAKE THEIR DECISION. HE JUST NEEDS TO CONTINUE DOING WHAT HE USUALLY DOES….TALK AND ESTABLISH A DIALOGUE ABOUT CHANGE FOR THE COUNTRY. PROPS WON’T HELP IN MY OPINION.

WE KNOW THIS COUNTRY IS RACIST…THAT’S ALL I’M GOING TO SAY ON THE TOPIC OF THE T-SHIRT

  16. QUEENFORD

I am pissed off also about that damn monkey shirt. We (black folks) are about to see everyone’s true colors these next couple of weeks and months. The Ms. Johnson you see next door everyday is about to get real racist on your black behind. The true racism is about to come out of people now. We all need to stick together and stand up for one another. FORGET ALL OF THAT GANG BULL@#%T!!!!!!

  17. Elijah

That monkey shirt was just unacceptable. But it was in Georgia, so what do you expect. Those hicks down there are degenerates!

  18. who i am

That is completely unbelievable. I hope that doesnt cause him to say anything that may hurt his campaign. I mean People are always trying to assasinate someones character!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. I don't care if ya get mad (the un-nice)

2008 and we are still climbing the ladder of firsts!

    Racism lives!

I hope there are some youth on the come up going into politics!! I mean I hear about rappers all the time but I would love to know there are youth interested in politics and the fight won’t stop at people like Obama, Sharpton, and hell even C. Rice…lol.. or we will forever be posting “firsts”

  20. I don't care if ya get mad ( the un-nice)

oh and at the shirt well that is pure ignorance but the name of the bar itself doesn’t sound like they are people into black power at all.

  21. Miss. Tiandez Jones

i love obama but im not feeling those fliers, its like hes begging hard to be accepted as a christian. still love him though.

very outraged over the monkey shirts and obama reference. WTF is that?!?! Would they have compared Hilary to Ms. Piggy if she resembled her? You can even say that George Bush’ hairline and face shape looks like curious george, so why were there not shirts for him then? Whatever the excuse used is, they compared Obama to CG because hes black and they always view black as monkeys. Effin racists. Watch, now you’re really going to see race issues and racist attitudes in the forefront. When Obama gets elected, all hell will break loose..you think white people are going to sit and let a black man, someone they feel is muslim, run “their” country?? Chea, right. Poor Obama..change is good and i hope he can be the one to evoke some.

Big Ups to the sister that became the first black female speaker! I clap to that!

  22. ThinkAboutIt

Obama’s camp needs to stay focused… he has and will be called worst. It’s not what you’re called, it’s what you answer to.

    The devil deals in distractions.

  23. Lola Am

I saw this on the news this morning and poeple are protesting outside the bar

  24. I’ve heard that Edwards is now backing Barack Obama

  25. “The Obama campaign is also enduring some much less positive promotion. Mulligan’s Bar and Grill in Cobb County, Ga., is selling t-shirts with a picture of Curious George peeling a banana, with the words “Obama ‘08″ underneath.

    Bill Said:
Well, at least we know how they feel about us.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:
    Caucasians DON’T like Blacks…
    They simply TOLERATE us.

  26. WAKE UP!!

John Edwards is finally endorsing Obama, which is cool. That’s a very good look, but I’m sure Hillary still doesn’t give a damn.

  27. divainva

Obama has been reduced to playing on the church people for votes . that’s a damn shame . Im not a voter but that’s low . I’ll reserve the rest of my commentary because I don’t have the energy for a cyber war today .

  28. divainva

As far as the shirt issue goes . Why get mad ? If you say you know how caucasians feel about us ,why the anger ? Im not pressed about how Im veiwed by others it just the same as begging to be accepted . People are getting tired of holding how and what they feel about our people in . Notice how over the past two years many racist events have taken place . Im so over it . I can respect people’s honesty . If he thinks the man look like a monkey , oh well . Being mad is not going to change that and lmao @ the creator of curious george lying . If he wanted that stopped he could have shut that shit down ASAP ! We don’t run anything but I see a lot of us will be forced to understand that .

  29. Kay

I live in Atlanta and saw the protesters on TV. He actually cussed them out and told them to get off his property, which they did peacefully. I can’t actually find any contact info for protesters. CL, if you can please pass along the following information:

If they want to stop this, the protestors just need contact the company who owns the copyright to Curious George’s image (WordsWorth). Certainly, this is not lawful use of the image. I’m sure they didn’t approve of CG’s image being on the t-shirt. What’s being done is actually illegal and called copyright infringment. View the terms at http://www.curiousg.com and then contact them. He’ll stop selling shirts fast and may be fined.

  30. Cortney

i agree with #28. Things like the Curious George shirt used to upset me, but not anymore. It’s time for Black people to press on and move beyond the outrage. Some white folks do it because they want to see Black people get angry, and because honestly- that’s how they feel about us!!

The problem I have is with the fliers. After the Wright controversy, those white folks in Kentucky are gonna associate that flyer with Wright, and Clinton is gonna have a field day capitalizing on that. And besides, he never ran a religious campaign before this, so why start now (especially in of ALL places- Kentucky).

Those folks are not gonna vote for Obama’s black ass
(No disrespect intended, but you know that what they’re saying :P )

  31. ThatGirlLinda

This whole primary has shown AmeriKKKa’s true colors. I mean CNN polled the people in WV yesterday and they said they wouldn’t vote for Barack because he is black. On the View Elizabeth was like maybe its not because of race it politics. I mean I know that not everyone is racist but as black people we have to deal with racism and not say anything about it. Then you have black people still supporting Hillary after that damn comment she made about white people supporting Barack. I mean she knows what the hell she is doing to me she has caused damage that she will not be able to come to I will never support her.

  32. Dame

    Congrats to Ms. Bass

No comment on the shirt but I just read that Edwards is planning on endorsing Obama.

  33. VIOLA1

THIS WAS TO BE EXPECTED, IM SURPRISED IT TOOK THIS LONG, I GUESS THEY SEE HOW CLOSE HE’S GETTING, YOU GOT TO TAKE IGNORANCE AND IGNORANT BEHAVIOR LIKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT SOMETIMES, I REMEMBER THERE WAS AN STORY THAT I READ ABOUT WILL AND JADA ONCE AND IT HAD TO DO WITH HER DOING ROCK AND ROLL AND HOW THEY DID NOT WANT TO EXCEPT HER AND DIDN’T CARE FOR THIS “BLACK GIRL” DOING ROCK AND ROLL WHEN WE INVENTED IT, BUT HE TOLD HE TO BASICALLY DEAL WITH IT AND BRUSH THAT SHIT OFF, SHE KNOWS SOME PPL DONT LIKE HER AND DONT EXCEPT HER FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT SHES BLACK, SO I SAY TO ALL OF YOU IS STAND UP AND BE ACCOUNTED FOR, MAKE YOU VOICE AND OPINION MATTER, I KNOW I WILL, PEACE AND KEEP PUSHING.

  34. caper

as a race we black people are going to be put to the test in these coming months. we must rise above it now more than ever, i read an article by a fox news contributor ‘susan estrich’ it said obama another DUKAKIS ; and she went on to explain the right wing machine thats laying in wait to take obama down. in other words the swift boats “ARE ON THE WAY”. the curious geo. t-shirt is just the first flare, this has just begun. calling them people racist its like water rolling off their backs they are IMMUNE to the word, they wear it secertly as a badge of honor. its just one of the swift boats . to start a smear campaign of [ race infusion] in this campaign to turn off white people who would vote for obama. ITS THE MENTALITY. don’t fall for it people . the obama camp MUST RETOOL the campaign to get over this wall. because if you think that people are going to sympatize w/ baracks story of him and his mother who were on food stamps speech, and think thats going to work well your sadly mistaken . when have middle and upper income america gave a damn about people on food stamps? obama must have a war room just for deflecting the attack that the right is going to send his way , and don’t think mccain is going to call off the dogs he can’t. he’s already stated i can’t do nothing about what they put out ; in regards to the swiftboat adds that are coming. and if i was obama i would state my case for the job and would not bow or placate for anybodys vote. you talk for one vote talk for all. a sunday talk show had a clip of obama standing w/ bill richarson as the star spangled banner played and bill r. had his hand over his heart. barack had his head bowed in prayer. don’t think that them right wing swiftboaters ain’t going to seize the day. STAY-UP ”’OBAMA. susan estrich had made some good points. that right wing machine is well-oiled. and on the way.

  35. Kekli

I am more offended by the Obama in the pulpit campaign than the monkey…I guess because I am never surprised by the actions of the ignorant.

  36. ~*Sanoe Lee*~

man oh man white people when will yall ever act right? you people really are the DEVIL’S OFFSPRINGS…

  37. Fenix

Hmmmmm… And Rev. Wright is wrong for feeling the way he does about America.. Intersting!

  38. BadGirl23

Don’t just Register, VOTE, VOTE, VOTE!!!! Registering doesn’t mean anything unless you make it count. That t-shirt is a disgrace but hey I’m not getting to upset because I’m sure more ignorant BS is on it’s way :(

  39. @ 28 since you’re not a voter stay out of this…simple as that….

  40. marc

I will not be eating at none of the Mulligan’s Bar and Grill anymore. DAYUMMM!!!! They had some good ribs.LOL!!!

  41. and those shirts aren’t cool…but i’m going to keep it real for a second i’ve been calling obama curious george since last year sometimes but that bar owner has that shirt for all the wrong reasons…congrats to karen bass…

    OBAMA 08

  42. marc

I just started to read these comments and I was thinking about two things. 1) I’m really am surprised that black people are still is shocked and amazed by this. This kinda shouldn’t even shock us. But at the same time 2) I can see that there’s going to be a lot people saying that all white people are evil or that all white people are racist which isn’t the case. Don’t let the actions of some cause you to think that they all act like that. That’s just wrong and ridiculous.

  43. BRIANA

Wow. I can’t believe the reasoning behind the bar owner’s foolishness. At least the publishing company isn’t standing for that.

  44. I agree with Bill. Whites just tolerate blacks. They can’t stand for us to be leaders. I have a friend (happens to be black) who is a manager at a retail store and white customers are shocked when they say ‘let me speak to a manager”, and he says “your talking to one, how may i help you.”

  45. marc

    And so it has begun.SMH.

  46. The t-shirt thing is messed up. That man know he wrong for saying that bull-stuff.

Work the house miss Bass! You show them how its done girlfriend.

  47. divainva

@ 39 Who are you to tell me what Im allowed to address ? Please, I can and will post on whatever I like as long as my hands are able to type . If you are a voter do you , Im not knocking you for that . If you disagree with what I said move on , don’t comment . You wasted an entire sentence strictly on me . I must have struck a nerve .

  48. SassyT

What’s wrong and ridiculous and that SOME white people keep showing their behinds. It appear that black folks should just get used to ignorant asses like the one printing this T-shirt, yet you’re concerned about how black people perceive whites? I have no need to protect white people for black hostility because some, not all, will always have a racist mentality and they deserve to be put in check. We can’t change fools like this, but it’s time we quit tiptoeing around the plantation. No other group tolerates crap like this. Trust and believe if it had been offensive to Jews or gays, they would’ve shut that place down. Just my opinion.

  49. SARA

ALL OBAMA SUPPORTERS WHOSE STATES HAVE NOT YET VOTED, PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE WHEN YOUR VOTING DATE ARRIVES. THE RACE IS NOT OVER, SO DO NOT BUY INTO WHAT THE MEDIA IS SAYING. THEY ARE GIVING OFF A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY.

IF THE MEDIA ARE ABLE TO GET OBAMA’S VOTERS TO STAY AT HOME, WITH THE FALSE SENSE THAT OBAMA HAS ALREADY WON, HILLARY WILL WALK OFF WITH THE NOMINATION, BECAUSE YOU BETTER BELIEVE THAT HILLARY IS TELLING HER SUPPORTERS TO GO OUT AND VOTE.

OBAMA SUPPORTERS, THIS RACE IS NOT DONE UNTIL ALL THE VOTING IN EVERY STATE IS DONE.
SO OBAMA VOTERS GET OUT AND VOTE, NO MATTER WHAT THE MEDIA SAYS, OBAMA NEEDS ALL YOUR VOTES, THIS RACE IS NOT OVER UNTIL ALL THE STATES HAVE VOTED!!!

    KENTUCKY
    OREGON
    PUERTO RICO
    MONTANA
    SOUTH DAKOTA

PLEASE FIND OUT THE DATE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO VOTE ON, AND PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE!!!

  50. @ DIVAINVA

you’re suffering from voter apathy, why are you even worried about the election if you’re not voting or making the effort to vote. but do you, that’s your thing. but don’t attack obama saying he’s trying to stoop low and get the christian vote.that’s was a candiate does they try to appeal to every demographics, and he’s a christian he wants another christians to vote for him.that man is just doing his job.

  51. Ara

    BARACK OBAMA PRESIDENT 2008!!!

    VOTE! VOTE!! VOTE!!!

The man making the curious george t-shirts knows exactly what he is implying. Some things never change, except BARACK OBAMA WILL BE THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, YOU GOTTA BELIEVE AND THEN MAKE IT HAPPEN!!! LET’S STAY UNITED!!! SUPPORT BARACK OBAMA!!!

  52. shwalker1214

In general speaking on the election with my cousin, she stated that if Obama win they will kill him like they did Martin Luther King. I feel we are ready for a president who happpens to be half black, but I just don’t think other people are ready.

  53. ff25

Black people. You are so damn sensetive! He looks like CG! It’s just fun!

  54. ff25

Black people. You are so damn sensetive! He looks like CG! It’s just fun!

  55. Just typing

#54 You may really think he looks like Curious George, but if you are white and say that, you could really get killed by making those types of comments to black people. The monkey insult is not something to play with. This man is really trying to make a difference by just being nominated.

Now if you were talking about 50 cent, you could get your wig split. And he really does look like a monkey!

  56. jones

What’s up CL FAM,Brotha Jones has been away for a while, doing things in Florida! My days in Cleveland are numbered!@#53 you really effed up my return to the Loop with that negative comment about my people. How would you feel if non-whites started wearing t-shirts, that depicted John McCain as a marshmallow riding on a surfboard that read McCain 08!

  57. mandy

wth does he mean he dont see nothing wrong with it he knows exactly what that shirt is tryna say
dat obama is a monkey because he black dat man is in denial!!!!!!!!!!!!
aint nothin funny about this ish

  58. mandy

@ 52 in the back of my mind i thought that
and i honestly would not like to see that
obama is working really hard to change alot of things in this country
and some people gotta hate still
    jus because hes black!!

  59. Mrs. PT

I don’t think it was meant in a racist way. That’s his opinion… if he thinks Obama looks like Curious George, oh well. Life is too short to dwell on silly stuff like that. Keep it moving!!!

  60. Vida

This shirt has been on TV for the last few days here in Atlanta, and I’m like Oh God, look at this good ole f-ing Idiot. Please don’t think he is representative of Atlanta. They have been picketting his Bar, blacks and whites together because this dude is a true moron.
