POLITICS: NC, IN DEMOCRATIC PRIMARIES RECAP
Wednesday, May 7, 2008

The Associated Press reports that the Indiana Democratic Primary drew so many voters (more than 1.6 million) that some precincts ran out of ballots. A few precincts were even ordered to stay open an additional hour. North Carolina also enjoyed record turnout: more than half of all registered Democrats cast a ballot, exceeding 2 million.
“We now know who the Democratic nominee will be,” according to Tim Russert.

Barack Obama’s victory speech in N.C.
Following a win in N.C. on Tues., Sen. Barack Obama is within 200 delegates of securing the Democratic nomination.
Obama stated, “This primary season may not be over, but when it is, we will have to remember who we are as Democrats … because we all agree that at this defining moment in history — a moment when we’re facing two wars, an economy in turmoil, a planet in peril — we can’t afford to give John McCain the chance to serve out George Bush’s third term.”
Hillary Clinton’s victory speech in Ind.
Sen. Hillary Clinton won the Ind. Dem. primary, but reports have surfaced that she has loaned over $6 million to her campaign in the past month. During her victory speech, she asked her supporters to visit her website and contribute money.
Clinton called her win the tie-breaker (following her win in Pennsylvania and Obama’s in N.C.) and thanked the voters for their support. “It’s full speed ahead to the White House,” she added.
It is being reported, though, that former presidential candidate Gen. Wesley Clark, a Clinton supporter, called to tell her it’s over. Additionally, former Sen. George McGovern, who backed Clinton, urged her to drop out on Wednesday and announced plans to endorse Obama. Clinton, however, has vowed to continue fighting for the nomination.

The big North Carolina loss - coupled with her Indiana squeaker - seriously narrows Clinton’s already pinched path to the nomination. With only six contests to be decided over the next month, Clinton trails Obama 1,815 to 1,672 in total delegates, according to The Associated Press.
But last night’s results make it virtually impossible for Clinton to catch Obama in pledged delegates - and it seriously compromised her argument to unpledged superdelegates that she is more electable.
“It’s got to be disappointing,” said Jennifer Duffy, an analyst with the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. “They anticipated a much bigger win in Indiana than they’re getting. … I don’t think it moves the ball forward for her at all.”
Obama’s strong showing - following two stumbling weeks that saw him lose further ground with working-class whites - seems to give him a decided edge with the 268 remaining uncommitted superdelegates.
Also, Clinton advisers acknowledged that her campaign was short on cash, refusing to say if the Clintons have had to lend the campaign more money following a $5-million loan in January. And they said that yesterday’s results would make it harder for them to tap new donors.
For Democrats, the results paint a dispiriting picture of division and demographic stalemate, with Obama’s win powered by 90-plus-percent wins among blacks - and Clinton’s strength remaining her 2-to-1 advantage among white, working-class voters.

I’m so happy for OBAMA!
Yes, he snatched 117 delegates i believe from N.Carolina.
Hilary, even if she won Indiana, still cannot get the nomination.
She is jeopardizing it for the DEMOCRAT party.
Even if she wins the remaining states including the super delegates she will get.
She cannot get the nomination at all.
She needs to take her behind out of the race and support obama.
She is purposely splitting the party.
She know she cannot win so she’ll do whatever she can so that obama does not get the presidency.
Shes a weak, power hungry woman. And these campaign shows her true color.
HILARY CLINTON PLEASE DO THE DEMOCRAT PARTY A FAVOR AND GET OUT OF THE RACE. THE DEMOCRATS NEED TO GET BACK IN OFFICE AND MAKE CHANGE. YOU ARE RUINING IT FOR THE PARTY.
Have you all noticed the reason why hilary even won obama by narrow margins, hell, slightly. she only won by 2 percent. people like rush limbaugh have been encourging republicans to vote hilary because they know if it came down to her and mcCain, she would loose the election.

She’s wasting much time and money. Her whole campaign starting off deceiving people with her lies and attacking Obama off top which is why she is still not winning. If the superdelegates make her win over Obama they will split the party and she won’t win the general election because the voters will feel even more deceived by her.
I really am starting to think that Jeremiah Wright was paid to destroy Obama’s campaign. It’s crazy and I hate to think that but I can’t help it.
Real supporters will see through all that crap and vote Obama.
Have yall noticed Clinton’s slogan “yes we will” what’s up with that?

I am so proud of Barack and Michelle through everything they have remained classy, and done things in great taste. I hear on CNN and MSNBC how he can’t win with out the White low-income voting block who are clearly going with Clinton, but they forget African Americans are a huge voting block for the Democrat party. I don’t care what exit polls say I seriously doubt if Obama has the most delegates, popular vote, and pledged delegates and somehow gets cheated out of this nomination they will be voting for Clinton in the Fall.

I am so disappointed that my state couldn’t pull off a victory for Barack, but we tried— all the major cities were for Obama and I really can’t represent the rural white folks who will vote against their interests in the name of “traditional values” aka stubborness and racism. My county in Nap stood up. Indianapolis (Marion Co.) was 67% for Barack… he carried the voters who really are LISTENING and WATCHING the candidates and not just the spin!
We are on the way to the White House—I just hope he pulls out all the stops and exposes McSame for the bumbling idiot, flip-flopper, too-old-to-be-elected, overzealous war monger that he is….

I’m so happy for Barack!!! It seems like Clinton can only rely on the superdelegates and Michigan n’ Florida. She can’t bring up the popular vote or delegate argument because she is behind, can’t bring up big state argument because NC is considered a big state……..I mean its getting harder and harder for her. I’m actually looking forward to seeing all the uncommitted superdelagates electric slide over to the Obama camp this week. Pandering on the gas tax holiday and the constant Rev. Wright MSM coverage did not have the desired effects . . . . . the HILLARIOUS decision to remain in the race is not hers alone: the wealthy people who own her and bubba need to find a way to get their money’s worth . . . . . . on May 31, hillarious is prepared to use her near majority-count minions in the dems’ rules committee to change the rules regarding her “wins” in Michigan and Florida . . . . . . this woman is a loser who is demonstrating that she and her owners care nothing for the party. It was the wild wild west in Indiana yesterday. People from Chicago went over there to help get people out to vote with rides and made sure they had the ID that was needed. Obama came close and I’m still proud of him. As far as Michelle is concerned there is nothing wrong with the woman’s hair or clothes. To whom much is given, much is required. It is now time for all Americans especially African Americans and people of color to step up to the plate and make sure we support Obama and his vision for this country. Alot of serious things are going on in our world today, we as the younger generation have a chance to show this world that we can make a difference. To have more jobs than ever to build a country that our grandchildren and generations to come, can be proud of. I count myself blessed to have voted in such a historical race. What ever way it turns out history will be made. Keep ya head up OBAMA ! Respectfully stated and your MOUTH CLOSED Rev. Wright! I hate to say this and I hope I’M WRONG, but it’s not the fact that blacks won’t go for Hillary as much as it is the whites not going for Obama in the fall. Like I said, I hope I’m wrong, but CNN reported last night that the exit polls showed more than 50% who voted for Hillary would NOT vote for Obama in November. I seriously don’t know the truth about these numbers, but I do know that there will be quite a few that will do exactly that. That being said, the republicans want US to hate Hillary… hate anything she says about Obama…why is that????? Because not long ago, the Clintons were beloved by blacks (they could literally do no wrong). Now, since they got us to hating them, they’re probably no longer going to be in the political picture - which suits them just fine! What next??? Well, they can’t possibly expect US to turn on Obama, but they will work on those back-woods country rednecks - and after that - work begins on the young college educated, single mothers, and catholics ( the white ones). Of course, Obama will have OUR support - even those who like Hillary (like me), but I would never dream of staying home because my candidate didn’t get it.
All I’m saying is… pay close attention - its gonna be a bumpy ride. The republicans think they are smart and so far they’ve been successful in the first phase of their plan. Now, with Hillary almost out of the picture, we’ll definitely smell the shit!
Now, Obama 08.

Ja,
I googledd “Obama Campaign in Indiana” and I came up with several instances of Barack Obama being in the State of Indiana spreading the word.
Here’s One Website’s documentation of Obama’s Visit to Indiana
entitled “Clinton vs. Obama: Don’t forget these Indiana campaign moments”
http://www.indystar.com/a...080506/NEWS0502/805060393
“the Obama campaign craftily drew listeners away from a Bill Clinton event in Bloomington by offering free tickets to a Dave Matthews concert. And Obama brought in Stevie Wonder for his election-eve rally in Indianapolis”.

@#40…I saw that about the exit polls. I cna’t for the life of me understand how people can say that they’re not going to vote for Obama in Nov. And most of them are complaining about the state of the US now but have enough hate or ignorance (you pick which one) that they’d rather go through 4 more years of this than vote for the man the can actually do something about it!
I’m from Indiana and this is a VERY conservative state. i stayed up until 1 to see the final count and although I expected Hillary to take this state, I was very happy that he came as close as he did. they were expecting her to win by 7 points. H**l, I thought for a second that he was going to win!
Although I agree with most everybody that I wish she’d just bow out now, I do like the fight in her. Can’t hate on the tenacity.

The Obamas were definitely in Indiana campaigning. Barack and Michelle both campaigned in Indiana until late Tuesday morning when they flew to NC. In earlier polls, the results showed that Hillary had a larger lead over Barack, so that is probably why his campaign chose to be in NC for his victory speech. (Polls showed him leading in NC) Don’t doubt that their campaigning in Indiana closed Hillary’s lead to only 18,000 votes, and Hillary, Bill, and Chelsea did WAY more campaigning than the Obamas.

Also Hillary’s victory (I use that term loosely) speech was given in downtown Indianapolis located in Marion County, a county she didn’t even win in! Barack won Marion County by 67%!
Monday night, Barack held a rally outside in downtown Indianapolis, which was attended by over 21,000 people of every race, age, and gender who stood outside for HOURS (even through spotty rainshowers) to hear him speak. Hillary has never had that kind of turnout.

Gas prices aint about to go down all of sudden…the troops aint coming home…college tuition still will be high as hell… All things considered though, Obama will probably have a better chance of winning running against McCain, but let’s be real for a second…(and I am not racist, simply stating the facts) Do u honestly think our (republican) white americans are gonna just sit by idle and just let Obama get a smooth passage up into the White House? Whites still outnumber blacks in this nation just in case u don’t remember…. Tim Russert: We already knew he was the nominee. Hillary is off in the head if she can’t do this third grade math. She is starting to annoy me to no end. The pundits keep saying she has the White vote: Yes, the old white women. Obama is still pulling 40% of White males, and that is consistent with every Democratic nominee for president in the last 40 years. They keep saying she has the women-well, all the women aren’t white Hillary, and all the Blacks aren’t men! I’m here to tell you that you don’t have the “women” supporting you. And, I bet White women would rather vote for Obama if he were the nominee than John McCain, because he vowed to appoint conservative judges-and they will overturn Roe. So where is Hillary’s DIVERSE coalition? The fact of the matter is, she is one of the most well known political figures in our time, and she is losing to a first term senator who is BLACK(because people are still racist in this country) and his damn name rhymes with the most hated man in America (OSAMA)! So, she can say all she wants, but she has LOSS this one. Hands down. Superdelegates are not so damn super. They are extradelegates. EXTRA DAMN SLOW! Because by every calculation, psychological and mathematical, Hillary has loss the game and she needs to be ousted by the party otherwise it (the party) will be ruined.
I say we protest the Democratic Rules committee meeting on the 30th!!!!!!! If they change the game, so should we.

Babygirl-you have every reason to be scared and that is a legitimate concern. I remember three months ago alot of people(alot of Black people) thought Obama would be killed. But we have come this far by faith and we can’t stop now. You will never get anything in life if you don’t fight for it. There are no handouts, and I agree those Republicans are mean and will say anything. But, I hope you are wrong. I would have NEVER believed that Obama could win in a lily white state like Indiana where the KKK re-emerged and were just marching 2 years ago! But this is no ordinary campaign! This is a train, and it won’t stop moving. You just believe and let the haters be haters. Because for everyone the deficts from Obama because he’s Black, another person will come to him because they are inspired. You must remember that IOWA is to thank-because with out them, we wouldn’t even be here in this race. So, don’t write “white” people off as racist, or even a majority, because this campaign has proved that to not be true. I”m not saying that racism doesn’t exist, because OH YES it does, in a big way. But people can change, and together we can.
Just keep the faith, it’s a long ride!

Some food for thought:
Perhaps it is a strategy to keep Clinton in the campaign BY the Democratic Party!
Because Hiliary remains in the election, Clinton and Obama are ALL over the news…Hell I haven’t heard about McCain in about two weeks lol…seriously!…But come November the only name people will recall because of media saturation will be OBAMA!
This Hiliary things can play out many different ways!

You know Hillary “Pit bull” Clinton isn’t going to concede. She’s going to fight to the bitter end knowing that there is no way in h-e-double hockey sticks she is going to win! She’s even grasping at straws NOW wanting to count Michigan and Florida. Poor thang!
N.C brought it home!!!!
Obama ‘08 all the way.

Kandiblack, I understand in essence what you are saying, but who thought Obama would get this far? I’m not counting him out. Also, even Repubs don’t want another 4 years of Bush policies.

I am done with Hilary. Her advice on voting for McCain over Obama spoke volumes. It shows that she has no loyalty to the Democratic Party. And she is the one that keeps bringing race into it. I think she is so two-faced. What is so special about McCain’s old crippled ass that he should be preferred over Barak? Barak is a Harvard Gradute. Any Black person with any degree from any college; any Black person with a nice home, etc has worked harder to get it than any White person. So if you would compare Barak to McCain or any White person his age with his credentials, trust me, Barak had to work harder to get it.

I definetly think Obama has staying power…he has done tremendously well for an African American male and im proud of that…but im just afraid that he will be unprepared…i dont want America to get its hopes up and then be disappointed in the outcome

@ Kandiblack
So far we have been voting for the white man and still our problems have not been addressed. We suffer in areas of employment, income, welfare, crime, education, family disintegration, birth illegitimacy, voting, and drug and among many others. We as black people in American have to work twice as hard to be considered half as good as our white counterparts. Don’t you believe it is time for a change? Since there seem to have been no real plans in recent history by society to solve our problem, don’t you think that only blacks can solve the problems facing blacks. The white man will not fix our problem just based on morality because he does not have the capacity or willingness to alleviate what are classified as black issues. We have to fix this problem ourselves and I believe that the solution can only come from a competent black man as president rather than a competent white man.
