POLITICS: Obama takes Oregon, Clinton wins Ky.

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Following Tuesday’s events, Sen. Barack Obama has won a majority of pledged delegates in the race for the Democratic nomination. He returned to Iowa, where “it was in this great state where we took the first steps of an unlikely journey to change America.” He won the majority of the vote in Oregon, while Sen. Hillary Clinton enjoyed success in Kentucky.

Barack Obama’s victory speech in Iowa

Tonight, in the fullness of spring, with the help of those who stood up from Portland to Louisville, we have returned to Iowa with a majority of delegates elected by the American people, and you have put us within reach of the Democratic nomination for President of the United States,” Obama said.

He moved closer to becoming the nominee, but he did not declare victory. He even praised and congratulated Sen. Hillary Clinton:

In her thirty-five years of public service, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has never given up on her fight for the American people, and tonight I congratulate her on her victory in Kentucky. We have had our disagreements during this campaign, but we all admire her courage, her commitment and her perseverance. No matter how this primary ends, Senator Clinton has shattered myths and broken barriers and changed the America in which my daughters and yours will come of age.”

Hillary Clinton’s victory speech in Kentucky

Clinton has said she will stay in the race until June because she believes she can be the nominee. In her victory speech in Louisville, Ky., Clinton told her supporters she would keep campaigning until there was a Democratic nominee — “whoever she may be.” She commended Obama and his supporters and added, “While we continue to go toe-to-toe for th is nomination, we do see eye-to-eye when it comes to uniting our party to elect a Democratic president in the fall.”

Clinton’s advisers say her popularity could lead Obama to incorporate some of her policy positions into his platform, but they she her staying in the race is not part of a larger bargaining strategy. Clinton claims she’s won the popular vote if Michigan and Florida are counted and is hoping to persuade party officials to put the states back into play when they meet later this month.

Since neither candidate is expected to gain the 2,026 delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination, the election will likely be settled by superdelegates at the Democratic convention in August.

He is clearly the front runner, though they are both short of needed numbers. But his recent win definitely puts the nomination in his reach. It is mathematically impossible for her to catch up to him. I admire that at every win he uses it as a chance to praise Clinton’s’ wins else-where, while she continues to elude to herself being the clear democratic nominee - though she is so far behind.

The man clearly has a majority of pledge delegates. They called Obama a “long shot” now he is roughly 70 delegates short of a win. Then the only thing he’ll have to do in convince the states that vote Republican always for Prez.

The man is making History and I am proud of him. I think Hilary should have bowed out a long time ago and swing her supporters his way. Now we have her supporters saying they’d rather vote McCain than Obama.

All will be revealed in about 3 weeks.

I love how he gave her respect in his speech for breaking new ground in politics, I mean a woman in how many years of the politics, was almost the nominee for President of the United States, that shit is huge, and honestly, I would have been all about Hilary if there was no Barack for real, I’m gonna keep it real. However, how things have panned out it is all about President Barack Obama!!!

Maybe she can be his VP!!!

Hillary is sticking around because she thinks the Superdelegates are going to side with her since she is getting the old white votes. If the Superdelegates side with her, then voting is all in vain.

And she keeps harping on the Florida and Michigan primaries. That is ridiculous! She was all for letting it go when she was beating Barack. Now that he is (in the words of Martin Lawrence) “WHIZ-AH-ZIPPIN” that ass, now she wants to count them? If that’s the type of candidate the democrats will have, I guess I’ll be sitting at home in November. Too bad our forefathers fought and we could still get the shaft. What difference will it make if we get McCain or Clinton? Liar or the other liar? Same type of politics, same bull.

I haven’t paid any attention to the primaries because it’s just like a back and forth game. All I know is Obama is leading delegates and that Hilary is thriving to keep herself in the “news.” Just bow out gracefully, it’s not like you lose. But either way I’m glad both Obama and Hilary made it this far because not only is it history, it’s groundbreaking and on a verge of something great to come. And LORD knows we don’t need another republican in the White House.

OMG, we don’t need to be calling anybody no “bitch” “honkey”.Your just saying what they want you to say and we don’t need to lower the bar that low for ourselves.

Well I am a Clinton supporter and I do not want her to drop out of the race. Neither Hillary nor myself are stupid. Obama will clearly be the nominee. But Clinton is looking to the future as well as the past. With her being the first woman to come thisclose to being President, she want to avoid being labeled a ‘quiter’, which would most certainly happen if she decided to run for anything else. The pundits would have a field day with it. Plus I’m sure she wants History to show just how much support she has. Of course Obama has more support but it isn’t all that much more than Clinton. She wants the History books to show that.

With regard to the future, if she decides to run again, she want as much evidence as she can present in terms of support and if there are people and states out there that support her, any one would want that support reflected in future. Obama may have won more states but to be able to list New York, California, New Jersey, Massachusettes, Pennsylvania, Texas, Ohio (places with huge populations), as well as smaller places like Kentucky, West Virgina, Indiana, etc., all on your resume’ as states you’ve won, is pretty impressive and cannot be ignored.

Obama is the nominee, plain and simple and no one knows that more than Hillary Clinton. I say let her do her thing and focus on Obama, who should be hard at work trying to woo Clinton supporters over to his side because that is going to be tough. If just going by online comments on the internet in general, there seems to be a lot of Hillary supporters who are not planning to vote for Obama, including many in my family. And to be quite honest, I have ZERO ENTHUSIASM about voting for him and have not decided what I am going to do in November. I have no belief in Obama and I utterly refuse to vote for a Republican, and the rest of Hillary’s supporters are bitter about the whole process over the past few months and for good reason IMO ( and no matter who you supported, anyone who thinks Clinton and Obama were treated the same throughout this campaign is blind. The media was definitely harder on her and personally I believe because she is a Clinton moreso than her gender but that is another subject). Blue collar white voters, the Jewish Community, a large chunk of the Hispanic Community, and the small percentage of black voters like myself, are people he has his work cut out for.

Though Obama is the nominees and I supported Clinton, I still wish him luck because whether I vote for him or not, I suppose he would be better than McCain.

w. va; now kentucky have spoke and in each state the overwhelming majority of white folks choose by way of race. i will repeat, think about this when you spend your black dollars in these two openly hostile racist states who said in the exit polls it was about race. now again let me address the people who play football, basketball, and any other sport in these states. THE WHITE VOTE HAS SPOKEN. also you black convention goers and ky. vacation enthusist the buck stops here . it’s alright for black folks to run up and down a b.ballcourt or a football field .and its the only time you get white support being a show clown or a gladiator or when you are chop’n their tabacco like slaves. please excuse my language but it is time to shut this shit down. THIS is post is not meant for the house n-a’s, uncle tom’s and step and fetch’ets, its for blacks who after all these years decide its time we come together as a black race. because this gov’t and the majority of whites, not all of them. but how many times do they have to show us that they don’t give a damn about us as black race. even the UN is now investigating racism in america. now i rest my case.

If Hillary is looking toward the future and knows she is not winning, she should rally behind Barack. That way the majority of the democrats who are standing for Barack will remember her in 2016, and then it will be her turn.

I still think your theory is incorrect. She is not trying to support Barack because all of her Klansmen will be furious with her, and she will lose their support the next go ’round!

@ # 20-Velvet J. Hillary won the Texas primary earning 65 delegates while Obama earned 61. Obama won the Texas caucus 38-29. So, you tell me who really won Texas.

Also, it is sad to see that some Hillary supporters will not support Obama if he wins the nomination, but most of his supporters are williling to support her. This just goes to show what type of leader she is. She has bitter people following her. Obama’s message resonates with his supporters and we will do what he wants us to do which is to support Hillary if she wins-that’s just the type of person he is. WHY ISN’T SHE RESENTING THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR FROM HER SUPPORTERS?!! All she is doing is just hurting the party more and more everyday.

Hillary will not give it up unless absolutely forced to do so. From an astrological standpoint, when we Scorpios have our heart set on something, we will do absolutely everything in our power to get it. This race has become an obsession to her. Even though she’s clearly losing, she’s convinced herself otherwise. I won’t be surprised if she has a complete meltdown when reality hits.
I’m more concerned with what happens in November. There are lots of folks out there totally unwilling to vote Obama. And with that phony Hillary still pressing on, Obama has very little time to campaign!

If Black people do not go out and vote during the national election all this would have been in vain. As delusional as McCain may sound, majority of the white people out there will not vote for Obama. They would rather vote for crazy white man than a competent Black Man. So coupled with a huge turn out by Blacks and the little young white support that he has, Obama is unstoppable. Believe me if they were counting blogs Obama would win in a landslide. Since they’re not, Black people have to get out there on Election Day and make history

I agree with you so much! I think that if Hillary’s supporters would rather choose McCain because they don’t trust Barack the “black man” then to hell with them. Many of Obama’s supporters said they would back Hillary just to have McCain not get into office eventhough she’s a flat out liar. If McCain gets into office because of Hillary supporters lack of support towards Obama then I’d say we as black people need to keep those recruiters away from our children and not reinstate nothing because that man has promised that this war will continue to go on no matter how many are killed, no matter how many people lose their homes, no matter how much in debt this country is, and if that’s the case let all of those bitter Hillary supporters and their kin go over there and fight this senseless war and let them dig out the bodies that are still out there of people’s children. Seems like they’d rather that to then to see a black man change this nation and go in the books for doing so. The amount of racism and underachieved pride is ridiculous.

VelvetJ you and your family should be ashamed to be so childish at such an important time. Obama has a HUGE white support. We need to quit focusing on the small amount of ignorant whites that rather vote McCain than Obama.

I’m from Portland (OR) and not only did Obama have the largest showing EVER for a candidate (75,000) but as my cousin stated, there were more than 75,000 if you including those in their boats on the river, those standing on bridges, and on the banks of the Willamette River. That’s why he’s ahead. We can’t do anything about the ones that aren’t going to vote for him.

Poster # 22, all this “he has to win me over” is NOT b.s., simply because whether some want to admit it or not, Obama CANNOT, I repeat CANNOT win without Hillary supporters. And yes, many of us are bitter and for good reason. Not only the clear media bias but many Obama supporters have been HORRENDOUS on all sorts of levels. Not to say many Hillary supporters haven’t been either, but the difference is, Hillary supporters are aware of it.

Yes, I am bitter because I do feel my candidate of choice was treated unfairly. She made huge mistakes which contributed to her not getting the nomination, but a slew of things led to my bitterness. As a black person who, for the first time found myself out of step with most of my people on a major issue, I have witnessed things that have challenged my identification as a Democrat. I have been thoroughly disappointed by my fellow black people, I have been banned from websites for sticking up for Clinton, I have been called names at my precinct during the caucus, I have seen local black politicians threatened to be voted out of office if they didn’t support Obama, and I have heard my Congresswoman’s life threatened if she didn’t change her support from Clinton to Obama. Obama didn’t have to do the dirty work Clinton has been criticized for, because his supporters did it for him including those on his staff, which of course left him looking like an angel. Barrack is being treated like some savior, when he is not all that different from the rest of them. He is willing to say and do anything to get elected, just like Hillary, and some of us recognized that early on.

Before this process over the past few months, I was one of those people who would give someone a extra benefit of the doubt because they were black. Or if there were two Democratic candidates and one was black, I would most likely choose the black one. Or if I heard something on BET, or The Tom Joyner Show, or other black media, Iwould lean toward believeing it was true, or at least unbiased. I NOW have been changed and see the danger in that. I NOW see stories are slanted in Black media to make things appear racially motivated when they are not. I NOW see more clearly that the Democrats can be just as ruthless and heartless, as the Republicans ( I was aware before but I see it with new eyes now). Though I was aware of those like Clarence Thomas, I TRULY see the dangers in supporting someone based upon race….or gender.

This thing has been life changing for me, and some of those changes have led to my bitterness. I am so disgusted with the Democratic party I cannot easily say I will support them in November.

I speak for myself and many others like me when I say yes, Barrack Obama has some work to do because he can’t win without us. Prove to me that you ARE indeed different from the rest because I haven’t seen the evidence just yet. Prove to me you are not taking the Black vote for granted. Promise me you are not going to forget the black community if you are elected. Show me you can defeat McCain without leaning on “but he voted for the war and I didn’t” (though he wasn’t in a position to vote). Help me sooth my concerns about naivet’e. Show you are concerned about those who do not fit your typical supporter profile.

So yes, I have to be won over.

VelvetJ>>>I’m sick and tired of Hillary supporters whining. The most racist, angry, diatribe I’ve heard have come out of the hands and mouths of Hillary supporters. Period. I’m sorry you’ve been persecuted for being her supporter (I, for one, wouldn’t have done that because I believe we have a right to vote for whomever we want), but don’t sit there and put all the blame on Obama supporters. And for those who won’t vote for Obama and choose McCain, I hope they shut the heck up when it all backfires on their asses because of such bitterness. Obama has been repeatedly, yes, repeatedly attacked in the media. He, as a black man, has more the “prove” than Hillary. The idea that Obama supporters must placate Hillary supporters and watch our mouth or our fingers on the keyboard is b.s. I, for one, won’t do it, especially when many Hillary supporters have blatantly come out and said they won’t vote for a black man anyway.

If Hillary is for the party, she would talk some sense into her supporters and quit splitting the party. Obama has no control over Hillary supporters. All he can do is run the race the best he can and keep it moving.

Hillary supporters that will not support Obama should be ashamed of themselves!

@VelvetJ & Ty21. I totally agree with everything you have said. I think the nominiation process should continue. He wouldn’t back down to her, so why would she back down to him. When that magic number appears, then it’s over. Until then, she has every right (because of the antiquated system the dems have used) put us in this shitty position.

Now, more important, has anyone out there ever wondered why barack is soooo loved by whites???? If all is legit, then I will not be afraid. BUT, throughout the history of US have we NEVER seen a black man loved. I’m doing a bit of research from every perspective (including biblical) I can think of, but it just makes you really think.

By the way, I watched clips of Hillary’s speech where she did give mad props to Obama. She’s not blind or stupid. She knows he’s doing a hell of a job. She’s not a monster people. This was a hard run fight and things were unfair and biased towards her. Please don’t tell me you don’t see the news media kissing his ass. Again, something doesn’t smell right!

Hillary supporters think she has it bad in the media??? Why? I didn’t hear Rush Lombard tell his listeners to vote for Obama to mess up the race… I heard him say for several months for republicans to go out and vote for Hillary. The sad thing is that republicans started following suit and went out and voted for Hillary. Now that is fair. I didn’t see a pour of out-cry for that type of injustice.

I didn’t see Hillary getting backlash for knowing Rev. Wright. At one point there was nothing good coming from the media about Obama. At this time Hillary had her best days in the media… I didn’t hear her say this is unfair… Nor her supporters…

The media is now turned off by Hillary because they know she is not going to win the nomination unless she steals it. Why should they continue to waste their time on a lost cause? It is now on to the next story. Everyone knows that. Hillary supporters are crying WOLF… And no one is listening anymore, because the race is OVER…

It is time to stop dividing the democrats and come together and support the nominee. We all know it will be Obama.

We all know Hillary is playing politics right now. That is only reason she is still in this race. It is to set up her next move, whether is it to force her on way on the ticket as VP, or somewhere in close, or even if she is setting up to run in future. Hillary suporters are bitter just like her and her husband because they assumed that she would win this easily-as her campaign manager has stated they thought this race would be over in February-because of her name. Obama and his supporters shocked them shitless when he went on that streak of winning 11 straight states. All this whining about her getting treated wrong and the media is biased is untrue. When either one of them was up they got good media coverage and when they were down they got it bad. It just so happens Obama has been up more than Clinton. The FACT is her name is established in politics and she and many others had written him off before the primaries had began good and now she is the one fighting trying to prove who she is and what she can do. She, Bill, and THEIR supporters felt like this was owed to her. I think its nothing short of ignorance and selfishness that her supporters have the audacity to say they will vote for McBush or wont vote at all WHEN Obama becomes the nominee because its not Hillary. Not because he wont make this country better or he wont help you with the issues that you are facing or making us safer but because its not Hillary Clinton! WOW. Like another poster stated they stand basically the same on issues so after that its just a popularity contest or racist contest or gender contest. Do you really think that if Obama had been white that Hillary would still be in this? So please tell me whats more important. Are yall really that vain that you would sacrifice gas rising to 10 dollars a gallon or not havng healthcare etc because of how the media has been treating her or because you didnt get your way? If thats really the case keep your vote

@ Shawn08 & Tommykinnon

That is exactly my point. The basis for any voter that is a democrat denying support for Obama is based mostly upon race (through my own speculation and observation of Amerikkka.) I guess they forgot that the country is in chaos. They fail to realize that over 4,000 soldiers have died not counting Iraqi innocent’s that have died in this illegal war that was started by Dubbya and is going to continue under the Presindency of John McCain. For sure a black voter that will deny to affilliate with Obama because Clinton’s about to “bite the dust” really does need to evaluate their merit of their mentality and the awareness of thier past, present, and future.

SassyT, there are more news channels than Fox news, which I pay attention to. I know you’re not trying to be funny - just have a serious dialog, but I do believe the the mainstream media is biased. Obama receives way more coverage than Hillary in the more positive light. Of course, when she makes a stupid mistake, the media is right there in her face, but not when things are going decent for her. When Chelsea was being taunted by questions over Bill’s affair with Monica , the media loved it and even posed a poll asking whether Chelsea was fair game on or not on cnn.com. Most people on that poll say yes, chelsea was fair game. Now since Michelle Obama’s name is brought up, Obama says “off limits” - and they did it. There might be little snippets in the media, but not much. This is simply the way I see it. I’m not asking anyone else to see my point or point the finger at me like I’m a traitor. Just because I like Hillary doesn’t mean I won’t vote for Obama. I just hope that black americans can/will hopefully embrace Hillary IF she’s his choice for VP. The hate for her is sometimes unwarranted. She’s made some mistakes and so has Bill, but one can’t honestly think that they are not good for this country. I mean, give me a break already. There has not been or ever will be a president who has not made or will make a mistake. Hillary and Obama actually see eye-to-eye on key issues that will bring about real change in the country. They would be a dynamic duo if given that chance. I have always thought and still think that media wants us to hate Hillary. I think they cringe thinking of her in a high office. It just amazes me.

#51– That’s been the trend, I’ve noticed. He won the large cities in PA and Texas too. it’s the little racist backwoods boonie areas that are coming out for her in droves. That speaks a lot about this country’s racial division.

No, it’s not that we don’t get it. You just obviously don’t have full scope on what the main objective of getting ANY democrat back into the White House is.

Ty21, CL does have a lot of Obama supporters, so many probably don’t want to support Hillary b/c of her tactics. She has played dirty. Many people don’t trust her. I do agree that she should continue the race. Why not? She owes it to herself and her supporters, and frankly I don’t have a problem with people voting for whomever they choose. I’m only responsible for my vote, and it’s for Obama.

@Ty…who said anything about her being a racist? I’m not sure if she is one, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she is… I know one thing as factual, she is a race bater… Meaning she pulled the race card for people to think that White Hard Working Americans would not vote for Obama if he is the presumptive Nominee… That is FACT.

Another fact is, because of statements such as race bating; she only divides the democrats. Because some listened to her arguments and made decisions based on them, and others are disappointed by which way she chose to get on top. And after all that, she is still trailing, and will not WIN….

At this point I don’t care whether she backs out of the or not…the outcome will be the same.

Blacks being racist??? I think blacks can be prejudice, but racist? Some blacks are definitely prejudice, but racists I would not say so for the majority of blacks. And you have to keep in mind if a black man wasn’t running for office, the majority would get behind who they fill is the best qualified candidate and the majority of blacks usually vote the same way (meaning 80%, 85%, 90%)….so to try and twist this argument around is pointless to me because we mostly vote the same way no matter what…

When ever she panic’s she pulls the race card. She just stated that she won her last state because of “middle class, hard working voters, white voters.” Yet another statement that she had to apologize for.

Yeah I’m sure thats the way to go, just bow down to Obama, it would be something totally different if she was getting blown out than I’m sure she would concede. So she is doing good and making history too and making strides for women. So this nomination process is gonna run its course and for all who dont like it deal with it. She can only lose when he wins, until than keep going Hillary.

@Serious…you can not use the argument that the media stopped talking about Michelle because Obama said she is off-limits because it is the republicans that have been creating clips on Michelle… Not the media. And if you think Michelle will not be used in the future because Obama said Off-limits, then you are naive, and need a wake-up call. They are going to put Michelle and Obama on blast soon…just wait.

I personally think it is sick. The issues are not being addressed because of personal attacks.

Also, where have you been? Obama still to this day receives backlash because of his past affiliation with Rev. Wright.

If you are not going to say it is wrong for any candidate to be smeared in the media on subjects not pertaining to the issues, then your argument is no longer valid…

It is wrong no matter which candidate receives it….and I didn’t hear any Hillary supporters outraged by Obama being attacked over Rev. Wright…

You still are not seeing what’s at stake. Because of the ferocity of her campaign; if she doesn’t help unite the party under the platform of Obama the entire democratic party will lose. You don’t get that??

Shawn08 -It is wrong no matter who the candidate is. I personally hate the attacks on family members no matter who it is. Yes, I was upset over the Rev. Wright issue. I thought it was crazy-stupid, but I haven’t heard Rev. Wright’s name lately. By the way, I did not call you naive and say you needed a wake-up call so why would you attack me??? I understand the need for debate, but we can do it without attacking each other - who knows, we could learn from each other.

The truth of the matter is that Hillary and Obama really do have similar views. But will she stand on those views once elected?

My issue is that Hillary is now trying to get Florida and Michigan counted because she’s losing! Originally, she didn’t care about the people and their voting rights in those states and agreed that the votes should not be counted. She’s retracting that statement now because she’s behind. To me, that’s MAJOR. If she’s already retracting, what will she take back once she gets in office? I originally said I would vote for any democrat, just as long as they would bring the troops home. But is she going to change her mind on that too?

At least McCain, the third of the Bush trilogy, (Big Bush, Lil’ Bush, and now [Mc]Bush III) is letting us know up front that he plans on killing more of our people as he persists in war. We already know if he’s voted in, the war will continue and gas and food will continue to go up, we will continue to get surcharged for all of our goods, and he will continue to let our people die due to war.

To me, there seems to be only one choice…and Obama is it.

If Hillary is such an advocate and leader for the “better cause;” she will take this premise into her own hands. That is what leader’s are suppose to do. The entity of the D.N.C. is not going to be nominated as president but one of it’s candidates will.

@Serious, I heard the Rev. Wright mention just yesterday. And if you took my statement the wrong way, I am sorry. I am just trying to get you to see that you are only focusing on what is happening to Hillary, when in fact it has happened to both candidates. So, there should be no anomosity towards one candidate because you feel only one side is being treated unfairly. They both have been and will continue to be trreated unfairly, and it is truly unfortunate.

Furthermore, for her own selfish agenda she is continuing her campaign knowing that she is delaying Obama from actually running for president. This issue is what will hurt him most.

If this was Barack in her shoes, than I know black people on here wouldnt be telling a black man thats running a close race for president to step aside. No way would that happen and you guys know that. Another reason why its good for her not to step aside is because if she quits, do you think her supporters want a quitter, people that voted in Kentucky last night do you think they want to see her quit, nah I’m sure they dont, and none of her other million supporters dont either. Contrary to popular belief there is some good that can come out of this, maybe even bring the party closer to know that they have two candidates, that are able to lead the country.

Shawn08 - I hear you. I must have missed the Wright story yesterday - and trust me, I watch the news religiously - so my fault. I guess we all have our views and support our candidate full force. I will not put Obama down and again, will vote for him in November. I just hope he picks a running mate with some sense. It’s unfortunate that the media is turning this political race into a monster of it’s own. I agree that Hillary has made some huge mistakes, but that’s what they were. I still believe that she’s smart, and can get this clean-up job done - As well as Obama can. So, the bottom line is will Obama be our first black President of the US, I think he can win this. But, he must not choose a foolish running mate.

Like I said “for her own political motivations to be a viable force within politics”. As for the voters: whoever will negate the other candidate because their hopeful is failing is a weak link withing the Democratic Party. If it was Obama then I would patiently wait for him to lose and then place my vote with Hillary. More is at jeopardy than race and gender milestones; this is about trying to repair the country. This isn’t sports.
