POLITICS: WV DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY RECAP
Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Sen. Hillary Clinton won a lopsided victory over Sen. Barack Obama in Tuesday’s West Virginia Democratic Primary. According to exit polls, more than 8 in 10 backed Clinton. However, because of his lead in delegates, her win in one of the whitest and most rural states is unlikely to hurt Obama’s chances of winning the Dem. nomination.
Obama’s aides said his lead in delegates and in the popular vote had him feeling like a winner. The Times headline pretty much sums it up: Hillary Clinton takes West Virginia but defeat still looms.
A victory for Clinton, though, in another general election battleground state like Pennsylvania and Ohio raises questions about Obama’s ability to win swing states against presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain.
Hillary Clinton’s victory speech in W.Va.
The Clinton campaign has taunted the notion that “no Democrat has won the White House since 1916 without winning West Virginia”. And after her win on Tuesday, Clinton vowed to continue: “There are some who have wanted to cut this race short. They say ‘give up, it’s too hard, the mountain is too high,’ but here in West Virginia, you know a thing or two about rough roads to the top of the mountain. We know from the Bible that faith can move mountains and, my friends, the faith of the Mountain State has moved me. I am more determined than ever to carry on this campaign until everyone has had a chance to make their voices heard.”
Obama spent Tuesday in the general election battleground state of Missouri, saying it was a place “where we will compete to win when I am the Democratic nominee for president”. “There is a lot of talk these days about how the Democratic Party is divided,” Obama said. “But I’m not worried, because I know that we’ll be able to come together quickly behind a common purpose. There’s too much that unites us as Democrats. There’s too much at stake for our country.”
On Wednesday, the Obama campaign sent out statements celebrating the support of two superdelegates and the Wall Street Journal reports that he will receive the endorsements of three former Securities and Exchange Commission chairmen.
I read something interesting that said, “it seems clear that some degree of racism is at play here and her popularity is as much hostility against Obama as support of her”. Just yesterday, The Washington Post published an article regarding racist incidents Obama campaign workers have endured.

Come on Hillary you are gtting hype over what? We all knew she was gonna win WV that’s why Barack didn’t waste time there. WV is one of the most weirdest and racist states. Hillary can say she would bomb WV and they’d still vote for her.

Hil is making a statement which comes down to race. It has always been that when a candidate in the same party goes against another they bow out gracefully and support the other candidate of that party.
Hil is clearly saying, that West VA doesn’t want a black man in office and some of the other mostly white states don’t either. If Obama wins they may not vote which gets McCain in office. So in all the under handed campaigning which do you want me a woman, a Clinton with experience or a 76 year old man under Bush’s old reign; because I already know you don’t want a black man because I win the popular vote in the southern predominantly white states..

Hillary is trying her darndest to be the democratic nominee, but unfortunately, she is chasing the horizon on this one. In my opinion, Obama cannot make it to the White House without Hillary. I believe Obama would be foolish if he doesn’t nominate her as his vice president. Hillary has proven that she is one tough and determined cookie and both she and Obama would make a formidable team going in to the national primaries come November.

I’m from WV and BLACK and we are not all rednecks. I support the election like everyone else but not in an ignorant way. Obama or Hilary are great candidates for the presidency. Lets not make this election based on race and embrace the fact that we will be able to change history if either candidate is elected.

West Virginia is 95% white, and beacuse of that, they’ve probably never seen a black man interact in their everyday lives, let alone a high profile educated one. Seven out of 10 in that state are not college graducates. With those factors into play, it kind of gives you a demographic of their mindset and diversity. They probably only know blacks from rap music, flav of love, and any other degrading show they can laugh at how “coonish” we behave. We didn’t expect them to vote for Obama.
Hillary: what benefit is it to you to gain the world, but loose your soul? { that in response to her comments about having “hard working” whites behind her campaign.

WOW! She basically wrote off the black in your state by letting it be known that she is happy that the “hard working” whites of WV are behind her.
We’re not getting caught up in race, its your canidate (i’m assuming) who has again brought it to the forefront.

I swear Hillary is treading on my damn nerves. This woman see that Obama is clearly going to win but yet still she is doing every thing in her powers to ensure that The Democrats will lose the next election come Nov. She know damn well that the people are for Obama but yet still she wants to continue with this mess. Shit don’t make no Damn sense to me. I mean i watch the news and I read all that I can get my hands on here in Jamaica and i realize, that damn near everyone in America is sideing with Obama then why the hell is hillary still pressing the issue, I fail to believe that in this day and age people are really that racist, that they will stop at almost nothing, including losing their dignity (cause thats what left for Hillary to give up for this campaign), to not see a black man in office. I DON’T, I REFUSE TO BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE ARE THIS RACIST IN THIS DAY AND AGE!!!!!!!!

I see Clinton pulled out the Bible references. She’ll say anything to win, and she knows what those white folks in W. Va. want to hear.
Regardless, Obama needs to keep his eye on the prize. When the general election comes around, I hope all of the Democrats put their differences aside regarding who should’ve been the nominee, and join behind Obama as he takes on John McCain, the spawn of Bush policy.
I hear Huckabee is at the top of the VP list for McCain. LORD HELP US, WE NEED YOU!

@ #17, unfortunately racism still exists here in America. People just sometimes try to hide it. Like a previous poster said, there was an article yesterday in the Washington Post about how Obama’s campaign workers (mainly the white ones) have been verbally attacked for supporting a Black man. In any event, I think most of America, namely the democrats and quite a few republicans, are smart enough not to vote for McCain come November. In what was called the Potomac Primary (MD, DC, and VA) Obama won all three in a sweep. He even got more votes in Virginia, a republican state, than John McCain. America is tired of living in debt and destruction. EVERYONE knew Hillary was going to win W. Va and as far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t matter. Since she insists on going to the DNC, she will lose in front of her whole party and have to pick her face up and find a way to pay back $20 million in campaign debt.

@ 21: I believe that Obama’s oldest daughter is about 9 years old, so I seriously doubt that she is dating…
In regards to the not so shocking WVa results, they speak volumes to the racial divide that STILL exists in this country…let’s face it, people have become better at hiding how they feel about other races.
Additionally, for someone not of the African-American descent to say that they can not vote for Sen. Obama simply because of his race is the dumbest thing I have heard in my life…right next to Remy Ma & Papoose thinking she could avoid jail time

There was an artical posted up about a week ago saying that black voters would stay home if Barack Obama loses the primaries. But in reality we should be worried about the White VOTERS staying at home if Hilary loses. There are simply more Registered White voters than Black voters. So if your not registered then take yo ass to the DMV or Register online today!!! Because White people are liable to vote for McCain or not vote at all than to vote for Obama. THEY ARE WILLING TO PUT THEMSELVES AT A DISADVANTAGE FOR THEIR IGNORANCE. Please listen to what I’m saying. And for all those people who think Hilary is Racist ya’ll need to stop because Bill wasn’t running in office by his self. And the last time I checked, Bill was a NIGGA. LOL. Behind every strong man there really is a strong woman. Anyway, like I said please register because we cannot AFFORD another 4 years of bull-shit. Obama or Hilary, I DONT CARE. Lets just beat McCain’s old ass.

I also wanna write that Yes Hilary need’s to take a bow BUT, She needs to support Obama even if he decides to find somebody else to be Vice President. If she does that (WHICH I THINK SHE WILL) Then McCain has no chance at all and Obama will be just fine. Be easy my Black people.

@29 - EXACTLY! I had this conversation with my Mom last night and after reflecting on Sunday’s broadcast of the Chris Matthews Show…this exact topic was raised and contributors mentioned that somehow people forgot that Obama is bi-racial. He is not JUST a black man with 2 black parents…he is a true representation of America
Special thanks to CL and J. Dakar for feeding its readers minds with relevant news. This truly sets CL apart from other blog sites that simply discuss gossip and rumors…much love

#31, you make a good point. Let’s just hope that Hillary really does get out there and campaign hard for Obama. It would help so much.
#34, I believe it. White people, especially old white people just refuse to change their ways and it’s sad because things will never change with people being so shallow and ignorant.
#35, Hillary did “win” in Texas, but it wasn’t a major victory. They actually split that state evenly between the two because the results were so close. People’s beef with Hillary is that she’s acting like this she thinks she’s going to win when convention time comes and she’s not.
And for the record (although I posted twice over there too), why the f*** are there almost 200 comments on Jay Z and Beyonce and only 30 something over here? People are so DUMB!

Hillary should show some class and back down gracefully. Unfortunately, that is not going to happen.
Believe me when I tell you this, the Democratic party will unite soon! Caucasions who said they won’t vote for Obama will vote for him in November. Hillary must back down first for this to start to take place. She is dividing the party with her last efforts. She is reaching way too high by pulling the race card. She is trying to get undecided voters to think her way by stating the BS that whites will not vote for Barack. And to me that is far from true. Because if it were true, she’d be winning the popular vote, the delegates, and the super delegates…. And she would have been the presumptive nominee by now.
But, she is trying her best in subtle ways to say, “If I can’t get it, Barack won’t either!”
It is time to end this ridiculous race, and prepare for McCain. Hillary must end this NOW!

ALL OBAMA SUPPORTERS WHOSE STATES HAVE NOT YET VOTED, PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE WHEN YOUR VOTING DATE ARRIVES. THE RACE IS NOT OVER, SO DO NOT BUY INTO WHAT THE MEDIA IS SAYING. THEY ARE GIVING OFF A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY.
IF THE MEDIA ARE ABLE TO GET OBAMA’S VOTERS TO STAY AT HOME, WITH THE FALSE SENSE THAT OBAMA HAS ALREADY WON, HILLARY WILL WALK OFF WITH THE NOMINATION, BECAUSE YOU BETTER BELIEVE THAT HILLARY IS TELLING HER SUPPORTERS TO GO OUT AND VOTE.
OBAMA SUPPORTERS, THIS RACE IS NOT DONE UNTIL ALL THE VOTING IN EVERY STATE IS DONE.
SO OBAMA VOTERS GET OUT AND VOTE, NO MATTER WHAT THE MEDIA SAYS, OBAMA NEEDS ALL YOUR VOTES, THIS RACE IS NOT OVER UNTIL ALL THE STATES HAVE VOTED!!!
UPCOMING STATES:
- KENTUCKY
- OREGON
- PUERTO RICO
- MONTANA
