Short hair is where it’s at. Let’s face it ladies, long hair is great to have, but can be hard and tedious to deal with at times. So, naturally this season – lots of women are opting to cut it all off and start brand new. Many Hollywood starlets have decided to go short or stay short recently – my favorite new cuts being Toccara and Tia Mowry.
Having a haircut is more that just a change of how you look, you even feel like a new person. It’s definitely a mental change, which you should be sure you’re ready for upon deciding to do the big chop.
But, if you are ready – then you will have lots of fun looking for styles because short hair offers a huge variety of looks – just ask celebrity hair stylist Ursula Stephen.
I recently spoke with the stylist, who is widely known as the genius responsible for Rihanna’s infamous bob and current short cut. See what Stephens says about short dos this summer and how she maintains Ri’s locks:
Tianna: You’re known as the stylist behind Rihanna and Keyshia Cole’s new haircuts. Lots of readers particularly love Rihanna’s hair – what inspired her current look and what made you give her look?
Ursula: Well, it was first inspired by the bob – even going that step. It made me say, I want to take the next step because I’m always ready to do something new, crazy, and fun! So, one day I said to her – I’m cutting off all your hair today – because she kept saying she wanted to go shorter. Every minute, she was bugging me about going shorter! We just did it, and it was crazy!
Tianna I read the cut was inspired by (model) Linda Evangelista – is that true?
Ursula: Not necessarily. Somebody mentioned that to her but, I had my own idea for the cut. The bob was so crazy and I was bitting my nails after thinking – ok, what do I do next?
Tianna: What styling products do you like to use for Rihanna?
Ursula styles Rihanna for “Take A Bow” videoUrsula: I use FHI styling products, the heat protectant is very good. I don’t try to use too much products – but, I also use Sebastian’s light holding spray. I just mist it around her hair.
Tianna: Would you say short hair is going to be a big trend this summer?
Ursula: Yes! It’s crazy! I’m thinking when is it going to stop?! But, its getting better and better, and I’m glad. Just to put to put style back into the ish -and being able to switch it up, be young, and have fun with your hair. When your hair is short, its always going to look done.
Tianna: I agree. When I had short hair – it was easier to deal with number one and I just found more to do with it. With long hair, I just want to throw it in a ponytail because I don’t feel like fixing it all the time!
Ursula: Right!
Tianna: What particular styles or short cuts will be popular? Lots of people dig Keyshia Cole’s new cut, are more ladies going to bring pictures of her and Rihanna into the hair salons?
Ursula: People are just taking more chances with their short hair, and like you said can do more things with it. So its going to be a combination of things like heavy blunt bangs – where its longer in the front and it looks like its a long hairstyle by the front but, its still very short in the back. That looks real funky. People are going to want that length in the front because its more versatile and you can do a lot of looks with it.
Tianna: Right.
Ursula: Texturizing like I did for Rihanna in the Maroon 5 video – for that look, I basically curled her hair real tight with a stove iron. Then I combed it into fingerwaves to give a old Hollywood look, but it still looks funky because of the short hair. So its more about versatility and people combining different things with short hair now.

yep i love short hair and the many looks we can do with it. Last year i woke up one morning and decided to cut off my hair. I went to the salon and told my hair dresser to cut it all off and make it look good! And she did. It was a bit longer in the front than the back but it was original and so for my personality. Then a couple weeks later i coloured it and then sometime after than began to designs in my hair and shaves. It was fun but so me..crazy. I find that people become their hair..like hair is so covetted and it really shouldn’t be..its just hair. People are so attatched to their lengths that they don’t want to let go of it. Cutting off my hair was the most liberating thing I’ve done in my life. I felt so free to be, and like such a free spirit that i am. It made me realize a lot of other thing that i was holding onto in my life and allowed me to let it go. I had long hair about below my shoulder blades and although it was a big change, it was time for it. AFTER ALL, its hair, it will grow back.
I find however, that people cut their hair sometimes to follow a trend or their favourite celebrities, and then they later regret doing so, either because something new comes along or they never liked the cut to begin with. Ladies, dont get manipulated by these trends. If you are really considering cutting your hair because you like how it looks on your favourite celeb, buy a custom cap wig or do a short weave FIRST. You get a better idea of how the style will look on you and you dont have to deal with the regret of cutting your hair, later.

Short hairstyles are cute…so are long styles as well. I was considering cutting my hair, but mama dukes and this interview made me realize i don’t have the discipline for it. Do wat you wanna do with your hair. Take risks. And why is everyone downplaying weaves? Queen B looks great with hers and i rock one all the time. Keeps my hair from breaking from the flatiron and stress from school and made my real hair grow even thicker!!!

i visit cl often but i’ve never commented…but when i seen this post i HAD 2 say somethin! thanks cl 4 puttin folks up on short hair!!! i cut my hair 4 the first time when i entered college but i let it grow back…and just last month i cut it again. cutting your hair off is SOOOO liberating and the look is so sexy, carefree and manageable. so many ppl love my hair but say that they’re afraid 2 go so short ( mine is shorter than all the ladies pictured). i always tell them 2 just go 4 it because they’ll love it. i’m tired of seeing black women weaved up with tons of fake hair. it’s OK 2 wear your REAL hair REGARDLESS of the length. thanks 4 helping black women embrace shorter hair:)
im soooo otired of evry1 jumping on the bandwagon and chopping their hair off…..especially my friends who wouldn’t be caught dead without a 20 inch weave in their head lol. i love keyshia, rihanna, and tia’s hair!!! tocarra looks better with long hair, the short cut makes her look older.
i hate having long hair in the summer so i usually get it cut like tia mowry’s but that is such a waste of time because in a few weeks my hair is down my back again so i basically wasted my time and money. i think short hair is good for people who can keep up with it and maintain. short hair has to be styled more often in my opinion i prefer to just unwrap it and go or put in a ponytail when it gets on my nerves.

Hell mos tof us sistas already wearin it short – under OUR weaves. It’s hilarious to me when some of us front like we have a CHOICE between butt length hair and short hair. If most of us want a “short look” just take that 40 lbs of yak out ya head and wear your own sh-t.

As high priced human hair is, we should strike the hair industry, after all it is all made in China. Then again thinking about how different some will look without hair and i cringe! It aint for errbody! Very cute tho’

Short hair is the bomb.. I had been saying I’d never ever cut my hair and last summer I was like… CUT THIS OFF.. The heat in the summer is unbearable and my hair was damaged from dyes.. i looooove having a lower maintenance style but.. its still not as short as I like… I look older and I more mature.. and I’ve been told I look like I have it together.. and like they say.. you have to dress for who you are who you WANT to be.. and I sooooo need to get it together.. (shout outs to Ohio State for making me the confused person I am lol)
I had long hair for over 10 years, I needed a change so I cut my hair really short last summer and I received so much attention everywhere I went. Within 3 months my hair had grew out of the style, my hair grew so much faster and healthier then when it was longer. My hair dresser trims my hair every couple of weeks, because of the new growth. It hasn’t been a year yet and my hair has already grown into a bob.
Although short hair is high maintenance, it is a great way to get healthy longer hair!!!

I LOVE her hair, but you know what I hate that people will start going ohh you copied rihanna I cut my hair just like hers 8 MONTHS AGO. So its not like shes the first edgy person to chop all her hair off. Besides I really did, and she wears a net weave. So yeah.

I feel you on that post!! I did the same thing! I cut my long hair off for my birthday when I was in college and had a short cut….and then in November I let it grow (not for any good reason, just to see what would happen)…and now that I have the long hair, I hate it!! It looks okay, but not as good as the short cut..I just made an appointment to cut it all off tomorrow and I’m excited!!
That being said, to each their own, if long hair looks better for you, do it, if short hair is good on you, then do it!

I had the Rihanna hair cut done in last December and now my hair is back to just under my shoulders..The texture of my hair is a mixture of my ethnicity (Black, Puerto Rican, Hawaiian and Irish).. Can you please please give me some tips on how to I can reduce the amount of times I perm my hair so I can get my natural curls back? I have had my hair permed since a child cause my step mom did not know how to deal with the curls and now I feel like I have to keep it up or else my edges will look ridiculous (I live in Florida by the way…HUMIDITY). Also, do you recommend Avlon products? I love the Avlon KeraCare conidtioner and shampoo ( I purchased them at the Premier Beauty Show here in Orlando earlier this year….). Keep your hair long. in my opinion hair looks best between shoulder to boob length. there are only exceptions to longer and shorter than that
Can everyone please stop acting like rhianna reinvented the wheel. If my memory serves me correct, Keyshia left that long red weave behind and opted for a short funky do wayyyyy before ri ri, no one even noticed. Not to mention others whom have drastically changed their look.
