SUMMER HAIR: GO SHORT! FEATURING CELEBRITY HAIR STYLIST URSULA STEPHEN
Thursday, May 15, 2008

Short hair is where it’s at. Let’s face it ladies, long hair is great to have, but can be hard and tedious to deal with at times. So, naturally this season - lots of women are opting to cut it all off and start brand new. Many Hollywood starlets have decided to go short or stay short recently - my favorite new cuts being Toccara and Tia Mowry.
Having a haircut is more that just a change of how you look, you even feel like a new person. It’s definitely a mental change, which you should be sure you’re ready for upon deciding to do the big chop.
But, if you are ready - then you will have lots of fun looking for styles because short hair offers a huge variety of looks - just ask celebrity hair stylist Ursula Stephen.
I recently spoke with the stylist, who is widely known as the genius responsible for Rihanna’s infamous bob and current short cut. See what Stephens says about short dos this summer and how she maintains Ri’s locks:
Tianna: You’re known as the stylist behind Rihanna and Keyshia Cole’s new haircuts. Lots of readers particularly love Rihanna’s hair - what inspired her current look and what made you give her look?
Ursula: Well, it was first inspired by the bob - even going that step. It made me say, I want to take the next step because I’m always ready to do something new, crazy, and fun! So, one day I said to her - I’m cutting off all your hair today - because she kept saying she wanted to go shorter. Every minute, she was bugging me about going shorter! We just did it, and it was crazy!
Tianna I read the cut was inspired by (model) Linda Evangelista - is that true?
Ursula: Not necessarily. Somebody mentioned that to her but, I had my own idea for the cut. The bob was so crazy and I was bitting my nails after thinking - ok, what do I do next?
Tianna: What styling products do you like to use for Rihanna?
Ursula styles Rihanna for “Take A Bow” videoUrsula: I use FHI styling products, the heat protectant is very good. I don’t try to use too much products - but, I also use Sebastian’s light holding spray. I just mist it around her hair.
Tianna: Would you say short hair is going to be a big trend this summer?
Ursula: Yes! It’s crazy! I’m thinking when is it going to stop?! But, its getting better and better, and I’m glad. Just to put to put style back into the ish -and being able to switch it up, be young, and have fun with your hair. When your hair is short, its always going to look done.
Tianna: I agree. When I had short hair - it was easier to deal with number one and I just found more to do with it. With long hair, I just want to throw it in a ponytail because I don’t feel like fixing it all the time!
Ursula: Right!
Tianna: What particular styles or short cuts will be popular? Lots of people dig Keyshia Cole’s new cut, are more ladies going to bring pictures of her and Rihanna into the hair salons?
Ursula: People are just taking more chances with their short hair, and like you said can do more things with it. So its going to be a combination of things like heavy blunt bangs - where its longer in the front and it looks like its a long hairstyle by the front but, its still very short in the back. That looks real funky. People are going to want that length in the front because its more versatile and you can do a lot of looks with it.
Tianna: Right.
Ursula: Texturizing like I did for Rihanna in the Maroon 5 video - for that look, I basically curled her hair real tight with a stove iron. Then I combed it into fingerwaves to give a old Hollywood look, but it still looks funky because of the short hair. So its more about versatility and people combining different things with short hair now.
Check out the cuts and different styles Ursula Stephen worked on one of her biggest clients Rihanna:

All those hairstyles are sexy, I say if you are fierce and confident….ROCK IT! As a fashion major I’m all for trendsetting. Fashion and hair are very personal things.
P.S. Could be wrong, but I remember Toni Braxton and Anita Baker first making the short cut sexy and Jennifer Aniston with the bob when she was on Friends.

@ 3….That’s exactly what I did. I had my stylist sew-in a full head of weave, and he chopped that up into a real nice bob. It’s actually making me want to go ahead and cut my real hair.
It’s always good to experiment with weave if you’re not sure what you want to change as far as hair goes. Because if you don’t like, just take it out. It’s wayyyy better than doing something to your natural hair, hating it, and having to wait til it grows back out.

I’m feeling you but sooo many typos in what you said, lol.
All fads are recycled. I love Kelis but she didn’t have the clout to make everyone turn on their heels and copy the short bob like Rihanna has.

Tocarra looks like a bobble head anyway and that short hair doesn’t help her. Everyone else looks gorgeous with their cuts. Halle inspired me to chop my hair off in 1990 but I finally grew it back a couple of years ago because it is high maintenance. I have thick coarse hair so between relaxing and trimming constantly, my beauty bills were crazy.

The haircuts are nice. I have already cut my hair shortlike 2years ago when Kelis first did it and my hair was very long. Now I’m letting it grown back and I might cut it again a few years down the line or not depending on how I feel. If you’re undecided then you should try a short wig first and see how you like the look on you.

never ever go back to long hair again! I’ve been rocking a short hairstyle for more than 10 years now. I was inspired by Tony Braxton and Halle Berry when they had short hair.
Short hair is my thing, I get compliments every day. I use black henna rinses to keep my hair black. I would like to know which hairdye Ursula is using for Rihanna’s hair.

I LUV the short look…I decided to chop all mine off alil while ago. I cut off like 5 inches, but it was so worth it because my hair is much more manageable than ever and looks healthier. I’ve also noticed that my hair grows back much quicker than normally.=]

I’ve been rockin short hair for over 5 years I love it. It’s my signature style!!! I do advise that before you cut be prepared to be commited to going to get it done!! And find a good stylist, who knows how to cut and take care of your hair.

@ 38 Kelis obviously didn’t invent short hair. There were others who rocked that hairstyle before her as it became their signature look (i.e Nia Long, Halle Berry).
However, Kelis was the first to make a drastic transition from long hair to short AND make it hot. After her first cut, she cut it again, which is exactly what RiRi did…after the fact.
I just wanted to bring up the fact that Kelis is a major trendsetter but not many people are aware of that as she is not constantly in the lime light like the other celebs are.

Don’t believe that hype about short hair being the new look. Men love hair, I’d never take advice on hair from women. Take it from a man’s opinion, not what a stylist who is trying to sell her client look, so she can get more clients, or notoriety. JMO

I have short hair, inspired by Ms. Halle. I get tons of compliments from men and women. The men think its sexy, and the women thinks its fly. I have been rocking it for 6 years. I am a bit tired of it. So, I am growing my hair back. But, it is the sexist, head turning hairstyle, ever. Believe you me, if this doesn’t work out, I am going back short!!!

I remember seeing alot of chicks all over the city with short asymetrical cuts after Kelis cut her hair like 4 yrs ago. I haven’t really noticed regular chicks copying the Rihanna’s hair. This cut was already “over” when Rihanna got it last year.
The new cut for the summer seems to be the mushroom with the bangs. Kelis, Katie Holmes, Ursula and models in fashion mags all seem to be doing that look now. Trends change so much and as soon as people jump on it it’s passed.

@ 97…that’s true. But you can always tell whether or not they did the big chop on their own hair because their edges and nape are shaved and tapered like Rihanna and Keyshia’s. But celebs like Mary always rock the short wigs, which isn’t bad either.
I really want to cut my hair like Rih’s, but I have a frickin dome, it isn’t super huge, but it’s still big enough for me to wonder if a cut that short will suit me. lmao

Rihanna is gorgeous with this new cut (and let’s just face it, it’s very much the Kelis cut) but I liked her best with the assymetrical bob she had in the “Umbrella” video. It just made her look futuristic. But I dig the fact that she’s wearing her natural hair… Still, it’s definitely the Kelis cut…right down to the moderations and crazy etchings in her fade.

@108 you don’t think Rihanna has a big dome? That’s one of our features. embrace what you have. You never know. Rihanna has a big forehead and long strong face, that’s what makes this cut pop.

lol @ 110 true…and the funny thing is, I have a big forehead too. Maybe I will try it, I’ve already done the asymetrical cut, and the “rocker-type” chopped up bob too. I might just take the plunge, I always wanted to since the Kelis “Bossy” video.

Sometimes I fall into the zone of wanting long hair again, but when my hair was down my back I looked like an old lady and I acted like one too!!!! Now that it’s short, I feel so funky and fly all of the time, and it is so versatile. Some days I am rocking the Halle Berry cap cut, and some days it’s sticking straight up, and other days I flip the bangs.. I just love it. It has totally changed my attitude too! But you gotta be comfortable with yourself and not stuck on hair. Too many women hide behind their hair. Well some of them need to! LOL!!!!

Like #18 said, Im crediting Kelis to be the first r&B lady to rock that short hair, NOT COPY CAT RIHANNA….no way in hell is Rihanna or her hairstyler being original, she and Rihanna was influenced by Kelis, Victoria Beckham and 80’s genre of music to have their hair like that so dont be crediting anyone including Rihanna and that stylist for ‘inventing’ or first to rock it cuz Rihanna didnt!!

For the ladies who are thinking about going short but arent sure, you can always get a weave cut into a super short do and see if you like it. Test drive the new look, If you find that the short do is not for you, you can always take your weave out and you won’t lose your current length! no feelings hurt, no regrets…I think that’s what I’mma do

Rihanna is an A-lister.. the vogue dance were in a long time but no one took notice until Madonna did it. thats how it goes I don’t want to here about fefe dobson or kelis they both got drop by their record company . that means they ‘re not relevant.

I had short hair back in the gap and I think it has the same maintenance issues as long hair…. probably even more. Bcuz when short hair gets nappy (oh boy!) you have to relax your edges often.

Yeah, short hair is alot of maintaince. That’s why I love wigs. People think you don’t have to do much, and that’s where you go wrong. When did black people start caring about A-list and D-list?? Youngins… Blacks are all D-listers in Hollywood. But in the hood, you are an A-lister. If ya’ll keep talking about Rihanna like she is a god, your gonna get your little hearts broken.Because in 3 years it’s gonna be Rihanna who? This girl just started to step her game up. That happens with more money. If you wanna go there with the hair, Kelis was not the first. When Kelis was milk shaking it up, chicks had that “bossy” cut, I know I did. I guess it’s an NYC thing. Short hair is not new in the music business. Salt N Pepa brought the asymmetrical cut to hip hop . T-boz put the funk in short hair because it was blond. Fantasia took it to another level with the spikes. But before SNP,T-Boz,Toni,Halle, Fantasia or Kelis, there was Bernadette Cooper. She rocked I don’t want to say how long. But she rocked it…With all this being said…I LOVE BEING BLACK! Paris H and them are arguing who was the first to bring hair extention to their neck of the woods lol.

I like so many other people on this post am so glad you did this. I was expecting to see some really cute summer cuts in my new Essence mag but they totally missed the bar on this one. Anyway, I too am strongly considering cutting my hair into a bob currently my hair is around bra strap length. But I LUV LUV LUV the long in the front short in the back bob, I had the bomb cut my freshman year in college…this chick in the dorms only charged $10 for the cut and it was perfect! To this day I still haven’t found anyone who cuts that good! Where can I find this Ursula? or a stylist that can really cut some hair! I used to have hair past my shoulders(which is a HUGE accomplishment in the Black community). However, I didnt feel happy and didnt feel like it fit my personality. I felt like I only kept the hair because people(black&white) were amazed that a BLACK girl had HAIR DOWN HER BACK. So when I graduated highschool, going into college. I cut it up my EARS!!!!! and I LOVE IT!!!! The best decision I ever made. Its easy to get ready, I can always wear it down and its really taken away from my baby-doll look. I feel really edged up!! now I am going to rinse it into a Golden Brown(the sun has already my hair anyway) But I CANT WAIT. BIG UPS TO: Ursula,Rihanna, Tia Mowry and Tocara. A woman’s glory is in her hair, that means she must maintain it. Keep it washed and comb. It doesn’t have anything to do with length. Some of ya’ll crack me up. Black chicks are so catty when it comes down to hair. The ones the screams, She wears weaves are the funny ones. And the ones who keep committing about how long their hair is, this last commit just blew me away. Slave mentality at it’s best. What you should praise is the versatility and style we bring to the head game. And how we were taught to hate ourselves because of our natural course hair. The thread was meant to show us in a different light, and that we could be beautiful women no matter what length, texture, real or fake our hair is. We are always dividing ourselfs. And the Koreans are still getting all our money.

Who in the flying hell cares who originated the styles? tsk. Anywho, ladies follow your own trends. lets not all go out and get a Rihanna or Keyshia ‘do. Individuality is hugely at stake. What makes us all beautiful are our differences: skin tones, hair lengths, hair textures, ethnicities, etc. Why the hell does everyone want to look alike or achieve this certain look? What’s hot is what YOU rock and what YOU like. Who cares if your hair is 5 cms long or down your back. But those that choose to rock one of these styles, rock on!
