VIDEO: KARINA PASIAN - SIXTEEN AT WAR
Sunday, May 4, 2008
Sixteen year old Def Jam singer Karina Pasian debuted her new video for her song “Sixteen At War” on Saturday. The song was written by The-Dream and produced by Tricky Stewart and is taken from her forthcoming debut album ‘First Love’, which is set to drop on June 3rd.
Some people are calling her the next Alicia Keys, I guess because she can play the piano and what not. And some of you may remember that ‘Who Sang It Better’ post she was featured in a few weeks back.

wow, i definitely loved lovedthe lyrics! i;m glad they gave her a song that was appropiate for her age. i like her voice and i guess her and tiffany evans will be battling it out…lol since they both are 16 and they both have the bob haircuts, but of course tiffany evans voice is way more unique and amazing than this new girl. tiffany evans had “im grown” this girl has 16 at war”. this new girl karina is on the right trak, because she has great writers behind her. we’ll see what happens as her career blossoms.

Good song and lyrics with a good message
the video is ok i guess
but unfortunally it wouldnt do good IMO because it isnt a dance song or about lipgloss or anything that has no valuable meaning
The music industry is different nowadays you have to have a catchy song to make it
and its ashame because its talent going to waste
Their ppl like her who can actually sing that wouldnt make it because they dnt want to make a dance song who ”drop it like its hot or shake their butt around” in a video
and thats why music today suck.

I like the song and it is great to hear her singing something meaningful. Just because your 16 years old doesn’t mean you don’t have questions about the world. She is not singing about a revolution but at least this song addresses some real life material.

#19- Is there going to be a lot of competition this summer? Don’t think so. Tiffany debuted at #134 on the charts with 4,700 records sold. Probably 3,000 of those were sold to her label. No competition for Karina whatsoever.

I saw a lot of comments about people that are not feeling this song, first this is a song that young adults need to hear, instead “Lick the RAPPER.” She is different because her first single is not a dance song or begging for a man. I appreciate this song and I wish more african-americans (I am one) would take the time to stop getting caught up in the bull of the industry and commend a girl who trying to bring some self-esteem back to the community. And she can sing!

ehhhh…. i think def jam just ruined her career before it started. I love the lyrics to this song but - the song itself, i dont like. i feel like they chose it as a single cause its a tricky/the dream project & right now those two are in high demand. since “umbrella” worked for rhianna…16@war must work for karina. i dont like the marketing plan they chose for her. mediocre song + typical hair cut (looks just like tiffany evans) + piano girl. Sounds like tiffany evans meets a.keys. Karina has better songs they couldve released..sheesed they shouldve released karinas version of official girl. eh, this song doesnt do karina justice and neither does the hair cut. bleh, shes cute though.

I think the song has a positive message unlike all the souljah boy mess that teenagers are listening to now. The girl is telling the truth! Its not easy out here for young girls succumbing to peer pressure. This girl is giving a face to the struggle and encouraging young girls to be strong. She is no A Keys, but I think shes a positive role model. I like the song too , it has an anthem vibe to it.

Cosign #20. Females under the age of 17 really don’t do well these days because they can’t give that sex appeal that is needed to sell records ….its sad but true. The 90’s was a different story because artists like Brandy, Monica, Mya, and Aaliyah made music everyone could listen to regardless of their age and the industry wasn’t as focused on looks back then. If Tiffany Evans only sold 4,000 records its only a matter of time before they drop her…no matter how much talent she has. The music industry is so messed up.

It’s just about struggle & transformation @ that age of growing up. And it has that corner , hood, and ghetto feel I could relate to…cuz i see the fight of our upcoming youth everyday. Good message and reminds me of Alicia coming out with “Fallin” not shaking her ass with her debut. The King has spoken!!

You guys are really ridiculous and have no idea what you are talking about. This song is nicely produced and is very age appropriate. The lyrics are meaningful and I think the chorus is very catchy. Unfortunately this song only shows little of Karina’s vocal talent. On you tube karina sings Mariah Carey, Vision of love and she sings the best rendition I have ever heard. Karina cans sing better than Alicia Keys. Alicia Keys cannot sing no Whitney and Mariah songs. Karina however is best when she does Whitney and Mariah songs. her voice is incredible and I think she could take on Tiffany evans vocally. Yall are just judging by this song so yall dont know her vocal ability. oh yea and she is a trained opera singer.

But I love how every jumps on the Rihanna’s and Cassie’s of the world and act like they are the end all, be all.(And it was Posh spice and Kelis who started the hair cutting craze…NOT Rihanna!)
The only other young girls out that have any sort of talent next to these Model looking/No talent having sexpots is Jordin Sparks, Tiffany Evans and JoJo. I’ll even give the girl group Cherish props (Those are REAL singers people!!!!)

This is my problem about songs like this….
Its cool when an artist wants to create a song that lets people know about the trials and tribulations that people in their age groups are going through, but I never understood why these artists never mention the solution to the problems that they’re talking about. In a song like this, she’s talking about “why am I disrespected, there’s no daddy here, blah blah”…how about say that you wanna go to counseling? How bout say that you joined the Boys & Girls club? Now you’re just looking like a crybaby and mentally disturbed, and kids that relate are going to listen to that like “yeah man, I feel that” and go right back into feeling like crap. She’s right, you shouldn’t have to “feel like this”. Just tell these kids that are listening to your music how they can better themselves so they don’t have to feel like you do.
Thats the power of music. Just telling the problems ain’t gonna help. If you wanna gripe about the problems, shed light on the solutions as well.

Technically Karina has a wider vocal range than Alicia, not hating but its true. Alicia’s talent is being an r&b pianist more so than having a wide vocal range.
Anyhoo, Karina’s debut should have been much better than this. This isnt great single material, why her record label wated money on songwriters and producers who cannot make a great debut HIT song is crazy to me. Karina is a great singer especially for her age, but she looks like a Tiffany Evans wannabe here.

I thought the image she had when she performed for George Bush was really good, a slightly more sophisticated style suits her more than this image.
I hope thats a weave because cutting her hair like that is a NO NO NO

ive heard some of her other material and i really enjoyed her voice. However this song does not show that range that she has, nevertheless the songs really good. Love the lyrics and the positive message behind it as well as the video. You go girl.
AND I LIKE HER MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN THAT TIFFANY EVANS GIRL! I dont see why you guys are comparing the two. If that Tiff girl has not blown up by now, she will never blow up! So just stop acting like shes some sensational pop idol. Her voice is nice, but big deal, how many people in the world have nice voices, standout voices and just lack star quality or just dont make it! Oh please, give it up!

latinos taking over? she’s got black in her for goodness sake’s.
and i am not “hating” on her because she is light skinned.
i am mad because i am dead sure there are BRILLIANT dark skinned beauties/talents out there who aren’t given chances.
why every time i look up … there’s a light skinned girl in my face?
just faze black people out until people start saying the light skinned latinos invented hip hop and r’n'b.

vocally she better than most, but it takes more than vocals to make it. To put down Alicia who helped to open the door for her is just sad. Alicia doesnt knock Nina Simone she praises her and always gives her recognition. but Alicias music is a totally different stylings of music from Karinas and most other artist. different vocal ranges and ability is one component that makes an artist unique

I didnt like this song when i first heard it because it sort of annoyed me for her to keep saying sixteen…sixteen im like dag we know ur a little girl already dang lol but to me the song isnt talking about im grown now and ur only 15 so its good she song a song that is according to her age. Also i wanted to state out that people need to stop making their situation a war because u dont have to do anything that u dont want to so all them sixteen year old little girls talking bout they at war because they thinkthey gotta be kissing on boys in order to fit in need to chill out and go do ur homework its not that serious. kissing or sexing boyfriends isnt needed save it all for ur husband.

I cannot believe some of the comments on here. There is so much hate and many contradictions from day to day. Most days you have the normal R & B is in such bad shape because nobody is talking about nothing, then this young talented girl comes out singing a song with real meaning, and some of you just punch holes in it. The rest of you make bull shit comparisons to Tiffany Evans. The reality is both of these girls are pretty young talented young women of color and have a chance to represent the next generation of female artists. Is it too hard to just gives props and then fucking stop typing?

I feel we need to stop thinking of ways for this song to flop. I/We complain about music being dead and the images expressed in videos and lyrics are killing us. It’s so ironic , I was listening to “Street Soldiers” ( Bay Area broadcast) and they were discussing teen prostitution and a couple of lines in the verses in the song, about the men not being brothers (more like predators/pimps) and having no daddies around, are deep rooted issues WE need to address as a society and community. Hopefully this song could be a cry for help that might get answered. People are on here discussing her complexion and not the issues expressed by a beautiful young talented girl, that are affecting our children and effected our experiences growing up. Let us reflect in this song and see this is a cycle of life, that if not brought to the forefront in society by us, than who?

Um ppl who are saying she sings better than Alicia keys must be fucked up. Lmao
Anyhoo, I like her. This is a great song with real meaning behind it. And so what if she chose this as her first single. All ppl want these days are fast booty shaking songs. Nobody wants to hear about the real things happening in the world but instead they choose to listen to shit about lipgloss, weave, and dumb shit like that. Nobody wants to focus on reality. I really don’t like Tiffany evans after she said she was grown and shit and tried defending herself by sayin’ she is grown only because she’s been through a lot of bs. Just because you been through shit don’t mean you ass is grown. Karina and Tiffany are different IMO. Don’t really know why yall are comparing them psshhhh. Anyways you young teens should definetely be taken this in cuz it’s a good message for yall.

ABOUT TIMMMMME!!
Damn, I thought Jay Z was never gonna let her drop a album. She’s been signed for a good 2 or 3 yrs. She is really talented. I worked some of the shows she has done. Sweet girl also. Very down to earth.
She has a lt of developing to do as far as vocally.
And she doesn’t sing better than Alicia Keys. She has quite a way to go but I am looking forward to watching her grow as an artist.

first of all to compare her to a.keys at this stage of her career is just silly. just because you play the piano and sing doesnt mke you alicia keys. you have to have the personality and swggger to go along with it and karina at 16 doesnt have that. i have seen her sing around nyc for years with her father as her cheerleader. Although i think she is talented her personality was bland..kind of like watching paint dry. i heard her sing a whitney houston song she sounded great but someone asked her what the song was about she just stared blankly and confused then stated she didnt know!! that being said she needs time to develop and learn. As far as tiffany evans, that lil girl has an incredible voice for any age but nobody has figured out how to make gret records on her.
defjam chose that single for karina because both the writer and producer are signed to la reids publishing company fyi..
and lastly dominicans are just black people who speak spanish period..its no different than going to germany meeting darkskin folks who speak german and say they are not black either..just ridicoulous..

London Girl….that is Dominican Republic…not Dominica!
Yes I was one of the one’s saying that Karina was repping for Dominican’s, but I never said she wasn’t Black! Of course she is Black! Both of my parents are from Dominican Republic and I consider myself a Black woman as well!
Over 90% of Dominican Republic has African ancestry, the problem is they deny it! Which is stupid!
At the end of the day, if Karina stands next to a sista she will be treated no differently despite skintone! Believe that!
But back on topic, she is a talented girl, with songs that have real talk!
I hope she represents for the Dominican Sistas and the African American sistas, sistas as a wholel!

This girl actually had a message in her music and sang something decent for a young lady. Let’s see how long it lasts.
@72
You’re an example of how stupid, ignorant, and self-hating so many of you hispanics are, lol. Even the white man knows more about who you are than you do or choose to acknowledge. You said that the young lady sang at the White House during “Black History Month”. Why would they have her sing there if they didn’t already know that she was black? Some of you “hispanics” are so eager to be good Spanish-speaking house ni**ers and out do the black Americans that you make complete buffoons of yourselves. You don’t even know what the term “Dominican” means, “hispanic” means, or why you call yourselves that, lol. What a jackass.

Karina is considered Latin. In America, Dominican are Latin. They aren’t considered Black. Blacks are Black. It’s not just color, it’s culture mainly. We are proud people who always represent for our nation and people. It’s nothing against Blacks. I’m on CL. It’s just that we want to see our own do well. Jews and Italians both look white, yet they are different because of culture. Same with Dominicans and Black Americans. Go Karina! I’m happy to see Latins finally getting our due in R&B. DR for life!

fyi i am dominican and you guys would be shocked how many people darker than a midnight sky will be insulted if you call them black which is stupid. you have dominicans who swear they arent even west indies despite the island residing in the west indies!!! but will tell you haitians are west indians despite it being the same island, which is also dum. you have dominican women who dislike to go into the sun
because getting dark leads to distain and discrimination on the island. because of mentality built in by their slave masters we are all taught that black is bad so everyone wants to be anything but. i always tell them if a spaceship landed and told the world give us all your blacks or we destroying the planet they would line all our asses up and ship us out..all the dominicans would say hey im not black im latino..the white men would say get yo dominican latino black ass on that cotdamn ship..hahaha
