Black super models Liya Kebede, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn and Naomi Campbell are all featured on individual covers for the July issue of Vogue Italia’s first ever “black issue”.
With editorials led by famous fashion photographer Steven Meisel, this issue features photos shot by Miesel of some of the best models of color, new and old - including Chanel Iman, Veronica Webb, Iman, Tyra Banks, Alek Wek, Pat Cleveland, Karen Alexander, and even America’s Next Top Model contestant Toccara Jones.
The July issue of Vogue Italia debut on European stands next Thursday and will be on U.S stand later this month…

This is a good look for women of color. From what I hear, Vogue doesn’t usually have black models holding down the cover. Kinda odd how Toccara is included, but not Eva who actually won. I noticed Eva hasn’t been on Tyra show for a follow-up or nothing, but anyway big ups to all the beautiful ladies.

And not one of them cover girls is wearing their own damn hair! Still a good step forward. Hope it’s a sign of real progress and not just a gimmic to sell mags since people don’t really buy Vogue much anymore.

Well Liya Kedebbe is Ethiopian so she has straight hair. I don’t know about the other, only Naomi is wearing a weave for sure.
I think it’s funny there are so few black model they had to resort to old pictures and taking models like Tocarra.

after a challenging day, this is fantastic news, because Jourdan Dunn is from Hammersmith, they found her in Primark. It’s like saying that she’s from Rosedale in Queens and they found her in umm walmart or something..
we’re all gonna make it…

What is wrong with Tocarra? She is a model also. So, what if Eva won. I believe I see Tocarra on more stuff than I see Eva. I think that Tocarra is very beautiful. Just because Tocarra actually eat food don’t hate on her. Congradulations to everybody that was chosen to do the photo spread.

I have been stalking Borders and calling them for this issue! I can’t wait until it comes out! No many may not be wearing their natural hair, yes they may be old pictures, however, let’s stand up for the fact that there is an issue featuring black models in the FIRST place. It is a step in the right direction. It serves as a lamp for other fashion titans still living in the dark ages and not featuring and using black models on runway, in magazines, and behind the scenes. *Ana Wintor take notes! * Work it out!

Tocarra is reppin the plus size models, that’s why she is there. They are trying to make change. Not only black models on the cover is change but featuring a plus size model is MAJOR change. So for those turning up ya nose at Tocarra, she has opened the door for a lot of women. You see who won ANTM this last cycle… You don’t have to be “hood” plus size but if your bigger than a 8 in the modeling world your considered fat.

Does it really matter if they wear their own hair?? It’s 2008, I can’t belive people are still stuck on that BS tip. Why act like weaves are new. I NEVER hear anyone making hair remarks about Paris H, Nicole R, Jessica S, and Jessica A. They all wear weaves. But since people get it twisted because they pay $6,000, and call it “hair extentions”, it’s ok. Oh please. I would love to see some of ya’ll hair. Forget your faces. I want to see some hair game and not just on Easter and Christmas. This just reflects slave mentality at it’s best.

This is a huge break threw, i know first hand how hard it is for a black model…. And this industry wont change until all people of color eknowledge the blaintant racism in the fashion industry and demad a change. We deserve to get the same opportunities the white models get, so its a dream come true for me to see this issue of Vouge.

They’re all gorgeous!!! (except for that Tyra pic)
Where’s Karen Alexander–she, Naomi and Liya are my favorites!
I don’t know who else is displayed, but from what I see here, there’s a certain look here that doesn’t exactly represent all Black women’s looks. Hmnnn.
I need a copy though.

CHANEL IMAN AND JOURDAN DUNN…. WORK IT!
I AM STILL NOT SATISFIED THOUGH.
SO WHAT, YOU GONNA MAKE A BLACK ISSUE THEN NEVER FEATURE A BLACK IN YOUR MAGAZINE AGAIN? YOU DONT HAVE WHITE ISSUES DO YOU? WHAT IS THIS? YOU FELT BAD SO U GAVE UP 1 ISSUE AND SHOVED US ALL TOGETHER… THEN WE BACK TO “SPOT THE BLACK”???
THIS IS SUM F’D UP SHI* I MEAN, I LOVE ALL THE MODELS FEATURED AND IT ALL LOOKS NICE AND LOVELY, BUT INSTEAD CAN WE NOT JUST HAVE AN EVEN DISTRIBUTION? CAN WE NOT HAVE A BLACK EVERY MONTH INSTEAD OF WHEN YOU DECIDE YOU NEED TO FEATURE A PERSON OF COLOUR TO NOT APPEAR RACIST?? THIS IS LIKE ALL THAT BLACK HISTORY MONTH BULL SHI* COZ I KNOW NO BLACK PERSON WAS FOR THAT SHI*… I AINT EVEN GON START ON THAT ONE.
SOMEONE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG BUT THIS IS ALMOST A PISS TAKE. HOLLA

I’m glad to see a magazine taking a step forward and showing designers what they’re missing out on. Whether we want to admit it or not, many of us Americans look to Europe to see what’s the next hot fashion trend, beauty trend, etc. so I’m glad that Vogue Italia has decided to say let the world know what our people have always known: BLACK IS WHERE IT’S AT!!!!!!
Too bad Vogue America didn’t do this first. Poor Andre can only do so much over there at Vogue, but I know he is probably happier than anyone about this fashion exclusive.

wow 2008 and we have a “black issue” Vogue…. that’s an issue for me..a nd I have to agree one issue and then never feature another black cover…. I guess that’s the forty acres and mule gift from Vogue… they suck anyway…. NEXT!!
Love the photos.. Tyra reminds me of Kerry Washington in that photo on the sofa….
I don’t support clear people magazines….. When I see one or more clear people with an Essence Mag then maybe I’ll hop on board….. This is an accomplishment int he fashion world but a disgrace in all reality!!!

Well me and all my friends love Vogue and have held a subscription since High School. Yes we have discussed its lack of color but we like looking at the clothes. We like viewing fashion even if we cant afford it. With that said, I’m going to buy this issue online. Yes, I think they should feature blacks more but I’m in no position to change that right now. If I don’t purchase this issue and the All Black Vogue doesn’t sell well then they will feel justified in their “Black OUT”. They are simply going to say Black Models don’t sell as much as whites and Black people don’t support their favorite models. I like fashion and Love Tyra so Im buying it.

#31 and #34 ARE ON IT! The women look gorgeous, we ALL know that but I do have reservations about this black only edition. I just hope that it leads to black women being represented in the traditional magazines and not relegated to a “black history edition” while everything else stays the same. We’ll see how it goes…
Second, it appears none of them are wearing their natural hair. To their credit, not many models are. I will just be glad when the day comes when black women can just be accepted with all of our natural beauty. But, we don’t even have that type of acceptance within our OWN community so can we reasonably expect white culture to see it? I don’t know.

2008 and it’s the first black cover? we have not come a long way-but in order to make up for that they need to have women of color on all of their covers for a year or two, the same way white women are on every cover of every magazine every month. LOOK AT HOW BEAUTIFUL SISTERS ARE.

Nice cover, only gripe. Chanel Iman is by far and away the number one black model in the world, I would have like to seen her with a cover!
Jourdan Dunn is a stunner to be reckoned who’s not too far behind Chanel Iman.
And then there is Arlenis Sosa Peña………who has exploded onto the scene faster than any model…….EVER…..black or white, and she’s poised to outshine them all.
It’s a great time for black models. It’s true they may have not gotten their due before, but Jourdan, Chanel, and Arlenis proved that the right girl and skyrocket to the top regardless of race. This trio can’t be denied!

It is kind of annoying that the magazine has “the black issue” written on it. It is like February is Black History Month so let’s only deal with it then. This should be common place rather than one special issue so then after this “black female” highlight everything goes back the way it is w/ no diversity on the future covers.

I wanna see Tocarra’s pic. That’s the only reason I clicked on this post. Also to #23, your “slave mentality” statement is ASS-BACKWARDS. Ppl are talking about them wearing straight weave/hair because majority of A.A. women DO NOT have straight hair naturally and you know it. The slave mentality aspect your were TRYING to use has the ideal “nappy hair is wack and straight hair is great.” So if you think its okay for black models to wear straight weave, then you are the one feeding into the slave mentality, not the other way around.
74.

Thursday, June 19, 2008 /
You would what would have been cool; if they would have did a edition showcasing A.A. women EVERYWHERE. Kinda like a regional thing. All these pictures say to me is diversity in the A.A. modeling and not in the actual community. I guess that’s too Ebony and not Vogue lol. Nm then… but I still think someone should do that!
75.

@Chiara that’s false. ethiopians range in hair texture but most don’t have straight hair. i have an ethiopian friend who has nappy hair.

these pics are looking good (though i clearly see the photoshopping ahem naomi lol doesn’t matter she still has a sick walk)
