Over the weekend, I attended Solange’s show here in Atlanta with a couple of friends, including Dorion from BET’s College Hill: Atlanta. The show was amazing – Solange is really proving herself this time around. Not only did she look absolutely amazing, but she performed with a broken toe, and sounded wonderful. She had a stage presence that was really captivating. Her set was fresh, and she was just a pleasure to watch.
I also would just like to wish Solange a happy 22nd birthday tomorrow! Her party is today in LA!
Solange’s album, SoL-Angel & the Hadley Street Dreams drops on the 26th of August, and her first single “I Decided,” produced by The Neptunes has been getting a good buzz, especially since the release of her video. Solange is gearing up for the release of her second single, “Sandcastle Disco,” featuring Q-Tip. She just wrapped up her tour last night.
Solange is definitely doing her thing. She is a sweet, talented, down to earth young lady, and I had a lot of fun with her. She really has come into her own and this live performance made it evident.

The only thing I’m a little disappointed about is she is featuring another artist on “sandcastle disco”. I like the version better with JUST her. That song is my jam & is just perfect the way it is. I pump it everyday on repeat.

@ 11…I agree, but it’s kind of a double standard. Because yes the comparisons to her sister are inevitable, BUT it’s also her sister’s name that helped her get recognized. Because although her new sound speaks for itself, it probably would’ve been harder for her to get herself and her music out there if it wasn’t for her sister being such a household name. IMO

#19, actually, if you read or watch a lot of interviews that solange has done, I think that she gets cast off to the side moreso because of her sister.
the producers that got involved with solange’s album didn’t really work with her UNTIL the music that she’d recorded spoke for her. so I think she really took a lot of risk and really went out to stake her own claim with this record. it is shaping up to be extremely interesting.

I think if she really wants to become herself I think she needs to ditch the long curly weaves. They do nothing for the look of her or her music. Makes her look like a standard artist which makes viewers avoid the difference in her music. Solange looks like she’s on the verge of people like India Arie, Jill Scott, Floetry, etc. not being the standard. All of those women had their styles that seperated them from the Mary J. Blidge, A Merie, Danity Kane, Beyonce etc. I’m not a hairstylist so if you are one what kinda of look should Solange go for to match her music?

I get what you’re saying Brian, but I still think that her sister being who she is gave her the upper hand over alot of other up and coming artists because it allowed her to network, and rub elbows with the necessary industry folks.

Solonge made a believer outta me with her new track. I’m a supa supa dupa fan of Beyonce but it’s really no comparison. They have totally different styles of singing, tone, and voice. I’m not up to supa dupa status with solonge yet cause thats gonna take a few more albums and getting to know her more as an artist but she’s supa!
Brian – I think you are right. Producers may not have given her the time of day because of her name, but I think consumers are willing to give her more of a chance than other creative, unique artists because of who she is. I see so many with similar talent and even more on VH1 Soul late at night or when they play those underground artists who are trying to come up. Regardless, I’m glad she has a good sound and I think it’s refreshing and fun music. Keep up the good work Solange and go ‘head CL. That’s really a good look!

^^^ Solange should just be herself & if that means wearing long, black curly hair then so be it. Solange shouldn’t have to conform to the likes of India arie, jill scott or floetry just because she makes “their type” of music or because her music might sound “different”. & If she just suddenly decided to do a 360 degree turn like Rhianna then we’d be saying her imaged is contrived. She should just be herself.

I saw her here in FLA. She was very good, but I must say that her cussing sounded so fake, forced, and very rehearsed.
