The whole “they’re not black” thing is wack. Chilli’s mother is native american+indian, her dad is east indian+arab, she calls herself BLACK. Why? Because the way this society has been built, only BLACK PEOPLE have accepted mixed people. My feeling is, mixed people define THEMSELVES, that’s their right and their job because they’re the ones living the “biracial” experience. If they claim BLACK then they’re BLACK. Tiger Woods is MIXED/CAUCABLASIANDIAN or whatever you call it, that’s what he claims then that’s what he is. I respect his choice. Now, Vanessa Williams is BLACK. Alicia is BLACK. Shemar Moore is BLACK. Halle Berry is BLACK. Chilli is BLACK. Boris Kodjoe is BLACK. Faith Evans, whose father is white, is a BLACK WOMAN. Kelis, whose mother is chinese and hispanic, is BLACK.

Halle’s mother probably gave her the best advice when she told her to claim the group that ACCEPTS HER. So far only blacks accept mixed people more than any other communities. But at the end of the day biracial kids are what they claim to be.

Mama Combs actually doesn’t look as bad as she normally does. But, as far as her being ghetto—yeah, she is, and probably will be until she takes her last breathe.

As for Mama Keys, yeah, her daughter looks nothing like her; but she actually is a nice-looking woman. Her only problem is that she doesn’t put a lot of time into getting made up. I mean, that’s what AK was like, back in the day, but now that the industry has gotten ahold of her, she has learned that she couldn’t walk around all naturale for too long.

And as for the biracial/black debate, I believe that it’s up to the individual as to what he or she wants to classify him or herself as.

Theoretically, you and I don’t have the right to tell somebody else who or what they are. However, since we live in a society that’s hell bent on labelling people, biracial people ARE heavily encouraged to choose a side.

Now the reason why blacks are so senstive about a biracial person not completely claiming black is because we were told for so long that “black” was not beautiful and that being “black” held no value. So, while those ideas were pounded into our society decades/centuries ago, there is obviously a heavy amount of residue still lingering in our psyches. And because of that, many of us just can’t wrap our minds around biracial people—we don’t understand it, so that causes us to further perpetuate the “one-drop” rule.

Now, last I heard, Halle Berry considers herself to be black, because ( 1 ) she looks it, and ( 2 ) she was told that she was black, by her family and the other whites that she grew up with—so, “black” became her identity.

Alicia Keys, on the other hand, is one of those people who goes back and forth. I’ve noticed that when she’s around black people, she says that she is black, or when she’s referring to blacks, she uses the term “us.” But, she has also said plenty of times, in other circles, that she’s basically mixed.

Now, she was mainly raised by the white side of her family, so for her to recognize that her mother IS white is the kind of mentality that, actually makes sense, but unfortunately, blacks as well as a lot of other “one-drop” strong-believers find that difficult to grasp.

So, as I stated before, whatever race or identity that a person wants to claim is his or her perogative. I mean, you can call people like that confused all you want, but it is their right to view themselves in whatever way that they like, whether if it makes sense to the next person or not.

I guess, when we (meaning everybody, not just blacks; although I think that we may be the last ones to jump on board with this) finally realize that “race” is just a perception and not an actuality; and that “race” was meant to be divisive and not something that had anything to do with embracing one’s own heritage or self; then, there will be no animosity and bitterness amongst the people within our society.
