HILL HARPER’S NEW BOOK: LETTERS TO A YOUNG SISTER

Earlier this week actor and public speaker Hill Harper read excerpts from his newest book Letters to a Young Sister: Define Your Destiny in Harlem. The book (which is in stores now) is the second part to Letters to a Young Brother: Define Your Destiny, which he released last year to rave reviews.

Letters to a Young Sister unfolds as a series of letters written by older brother Hill to a universal Young Sistah. She’s up against the same challenges as every young woman: from relating to her parents and dealing with peer pressure, to juggling schoolwork and crushes and keeping faith in the face of heartache. In his straight-talking style, Hill helps his young sister build self-confidence, self-reliance, self-respect, and encourages her on her journeys towards becoming a strong and successful woman. The book also includes contributions from admirable women like Angela Basset, Ciara, Michelle Obama, Tatyana Ali, Nikki Giovanni, Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrikck, Eve, Malinda Williams and more.

For more information and to purchase a copy, make sure you visit Hill’s official site.

  13. Questioneverything

Ohh how I LOVE this man! A young Black positive man in Hollywood who is smart and intelligent as well! We don’t see this too much! Too many of our men (and women) get soo caught up in bling and hoing when they get a lil money! His first book was a classic MUST read! I will be getting this one as well! Thanks CL! I had no IDEA he was coming out with a new book! I’ll be on the lookout for the book tour!

I bought Letters to a Young Brother actually for myself to share with other men in my life. So, now i’m reaaally looking forward to Letters to a Young Sister..I don’t know if Gabrielle Union was the best person to do a forward for it.. I do like her, a she is and overall I guess she’s a good role model but she also has overtones of being a lil too loose too (i.e– all the pics of her with football players and stuff in the past).

Maybe Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long or Regina King would have been a little better choice for a forward. Ah Well.. I still look forward to what Union will say.

I respect them both. Love the MESS OUT OF HILL HARPER THOUGH and what he’s doing for his people!!! Plus he is gooorgeous!

  16. ThatGirlLinda

I plan on buying a copy for my niece and I will get the other one for my nephew.

Just saw Hill in Charlotte at a book signing Wednesday and picked up copies of both books for family as well as for my library. Very cool brother who is very inspiring.
Personally, I don’t feel that the books are “too young” for anyone to read. Why not use them as guides to understand what our teens and youths in general are thinking and feeling. Then have a discussion after he/she reads it/them. Our children are only in trouble when we as adults give up on them and let the streets and negative mediums raise them…it takes a village. Keep up the great work Hill ! ! !

Hill Harper was born in Iowa City, Iowa[1] to Henry Harper, a psychiatrist, and Marilyn Hill, who was one of the first practicing black anesthesiologists in the United States.[2][3] Acting since the age of 7, Harper graduated magna cum laude from Brown University (A.B. 1988) and also graduated with a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a Master of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. During his years at Harvard, he was a full-time member of Boston’s Black Folks Theater Company, one of the oldest and most acclaimed black theater troupes in the country.

Awe we both have a Master’s in Public Administration…..we were meant to be!!!

not to be a jerk but the first one was Letters to a Young Brother: MANifest Your Destiny not DEFINE… I read Letters to a Young Brother and absolutely loved it! My Kappa League Program is going to be studying it in the fall

  23. It’s great to see Hill come out with these series of books for our young people. The youth are our future- and from the looks of things, those of us who are no longer teenagers will have to deal with them- we are in trouble if we don’t help them now! Go Hill!!!! I’m hesitant about Gabrielle being his source, but it could have been a worse choice. Gabrielle didnt have to do this, so big ups to her too.

  24. YEAH, I SAID IT!

Ithink this is a fantastic idea. Not sure about contributions from Ciara (I’ve always gotten a space cadet feeling from her) but that sure as hell wouldn’t stop me from buying this book. Kudos to Hill for his continued support of young brothers and sisters everywhere.

  25. WARNING:OPIONATED

wOW! Thats wonderful young brother….we need more young brothers out here who care about there younger sisters(and im not talking blood related but God related) out here strugglin to defined themselves….its truly hard for some with no guidance, no father or mother or both. 26. Mike J.

I’m so proud of this brother… Very inspiring and encouraging spirit needed in “our” communities for these young brothers and sisters to follow…Definitely encourages me to get more involved in community service and outreach programs.

Hello, my name is khayla; I was flipping though the channels one late nite and caught a sec of the book( letters to a young sister) being brought up on a talk show. I did some research on the book and I was really inspired to not only read but to buy your book…Ive felt as though my peers and the people of my generation don’t take time and appreciate the things that will one day define them or there future. I am glad that this book will not only give us more advantage to read but give us more choices in what we read. I have read numerous books and look forward to many more books that allows us to be informed and not only learn who we are but what we will become. THINK.ACT.BE

    pharaoh jones tour:
The challenge of moral development when subject to “group think” pressures…

The sexual use of women for the purposes of male-bonding…

The use of ritual in human development and socialization…

The college man’s debt to chivalry in a world aspiring to gender equality…

How does a man maintain his personal integrity when faced with these and other challenges?

    S Y N O P S I S
After a live step show salute to Black women, Willis Jones and his 4 line brothers are facedwith a strong challenge to their moral consciousness, respect for women, and knowledgeof self. With community, leadership, and service as the cornerstones of his fraternity, Butch, the Dean of Pledges, tests one of the most distinguishing elements of a man for others: strength of character. Does “pharaoh willis jones” possess the moral fiber RA is
looking for? Will he sacrifice his principles for the sake of unity or stand his ground alone?
How does one maintain personal integrity amidst the pressure of unified thinking gone astray? The pharaohs take you on a journey through one of their most challenging nights on line. Will they rise and pledge to be the men they say they are? Individuals vs. the group, right vs. wrong, Morality vs. Immorality: these are the issues OBC explores in this high-energy short.
