NEWS ROUNDUP: MANDELA CELEBRATES 90TH BIRTHDAY / STROKE AWARENESS PSA / SHARPTON DONORS SUBPOENAED

Monday, June 23, 2008

n_mandela.gif Although doctors have advised him to avoid anything stressful, Nelson Mandela (who is pictured arriving to his London hotel on Monday) is gearing up for a week of events celebrating his 90th birthday.

The former South African president will be honored with an outdoor concert on Friday with performances by dozens of artists. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Aids charity 46664, named after Mandela’s number he wore while imprisoned in South Africa under apartheid.

The concert coincides with the 20th anniversary of London’s Free Mandela concert, which was held to demand his release. Mandela, who turns 90 on July 18, was freed in 1990 after 27 years behind bars and was elected South Africa’s first black president in 1994.

During his trip, Mandela is scheduled to meet with high-profile supporters of 46664, including Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith, Forest Whitaker and Lewis Hamilton.

STROKE AWARENESS PSA

The Ad Council and American Stroke Association have united to spread the word and save lives in our communities. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in America.

Though strokes are commonly thought to only happen to older people, the truth is that a stroke can strike people of all ages. Additionally, black Americans have almost twice the risk of stroke as white Americans. Shout out to CL Reader Dorothee for the info.

SHARPTON DONORS SUBPOENAED

Following a probe of his charity’s finances, Al Sharpton is now faced with many of his top donors being subpoenaed. Anheuser-Busch, which contributed between $100,000 and $499,000 to Sharpton’s National Action Network in 2007, confirmed last week that it had received a federal subpoena in connection to its charitable giving.

Sharpton has hired Zachary Carter, a former U.S. Attorney, to represent him and the National Action Network. He also denied reports that he twisted arms to get donations from corporations by threatening boycotts and protests. “The whole idea that what I did to these companies is shake them down is beyond me,” he told ABC News.

Amy doesn’t deserve to perform on that stage, she would completely dishonor him. This event is something that is to be taken very seriously, it is not one of those occasions where she can disrespect her audience with a bad performance, filled with drunkard stupidty, and getting “high.” Or where she can get her kicks with slur calling (the video). This is Nelson Mandela, we’re talking about. She needs to be completely healed inside and out before she can get on that stage (It can’t be temporary like the grammy’s where she got “clean,” won her awards, then went back to her old ways). I heard about her recent diagnosis, this girl seriously needs help, and it’s not going to take a week to fix that. I’ll pray for her, but she can’t perform at that event. Just my full honest opinion. For some reason I have a strong conviction about this subject, and I just feel that she doesn’t promote Mandela’s message.

DAMN Happy birthday Mr Mandela. A pioneer and a strog black leader of so many in South Africa.

That said, I love Amy Winehouse, but I find it wholly inappropriate to have her performing for his birthday.

The Feds probing into Al Sharpton`s charity finances is proof that you should never trust a brother with a perm.

They are doing to Sharpton what they do to every black male politician/activist/public figure that is the target of the season. I pray AL comes out clean because I am sure that they will try to corrupt and twist things in the most negative way possible to degrade him. Al I wish you the best, I’m sure your stance in the Bell case has nothing to do with this( yeah right), can you say retaliation for standing up and not being in your “place”.

@ 22 I completely agree with you. As for Madiba (his nickname), Happy Birthday! I don’t have heros but Mandela is my inspiration.

I’m South African so I am very proud to see this post. God has truely blessed this man with a long and prosperous life. It’s not normal for a male to live past 65 nowadays but he’s on his 90th Birthday, what a blessing!

Although, it would be great if he intervened with the dreadful situation in Zimbabwe as he’s an international influential figure

You are so right! They are after him big time and to say he shook the companies down for the donations, that’s just messed up!! I do have a question, when things go off balance for the people of black america; are we suppose to say dang that not right or is it good that someone’s their to challenge it? I’ll take having a Sharpton, yeah even a brother with a perm, somebody’s got to do it. We can’t get to comfortable, we can’t not challenge ignorance and prejudices. Dang, now I know am getting old!!! God bless!!

Wow Happy Birthday to Nelson Madela!!

aaaaaaaaah @ Sharpton, they investigate him like clock work every few years anyway, this is nothing new…. lmao at the lunacy of Sharpton shaking down a company as if any white owned board directed company would allow themselves to be subjected to a shake down by a black man…. well now that I think about it I guess Sharpton is the black man that can bring attention to any special interest issues that company may be hiding..lol.. hmmmmm

Don`t HoLd It In

Amy Winehouse should not be allowed to perform at the event that will honor Mandela. She is the typical white music artist, who bites black people`s music and smiles in black people`s face and pretends to be their friend and hides the traces of racism that lurks within her.Black people beware,Kanye,Common, etc, etc, every white music artist that smiles in your face and wants to collaborate with you, on a new song is not your friend.Don`t let the smile fool you.I`m tired of white artists who bite our sound and win a ton of Grammys and the black artists who create the hot music, that everybody steals, get shut out like India Airie. No wonder Amy Winehouse is a drug addict, because anybody who is fake and pretends to be one thing on the outside and hide what they really are on the inside, basically pretending and fooling people and sorry to say even fooling alot of black people into believing that she is something that she is not, would have to escape into drugs to get away from, the guilt and painful reality that she is a fraud.

JUDAH

Nelson Mandela has never done anything for black people in America at all and the only thing that he’s done for the South Africans is be a puppet leader and act as mediator between the caucasians and the indigenous peoples. He is a worshipper of Jahbulon and he came out of prison as a shill for the Oppenheimers. He reads his script very well.

Judah you have issues!! Show me the evidence please!

49.

JUDAH

Tuesday, June 24, 2008 /

Show you the evidence of what? No one comes out of prison after 27 years and is installed directly into a prominent position in any government unless they are reading from a script sis. I hate to break it to you but the man is a shill and if pressed to ask any black American what the man did for his people, none of you could answer. As far as him being a believer and worshipper of Jahbulon, you have to read “Codex Magica” by Texe Marrs. It’s common sense though, no disrespect. Any country where the people have been systematically broken down by the caucasian man and woman and a leader of the indigenous people is put forth as a mediator is obviously a country that is still in the hands of the caucasian. Mandela has been compromised and probably always was.
