NEWS ROUNDUP: OPRAH’S BIG SLIDE / SHARPTON ON BLACK LEADERS / MORE KILPATRICK DRAMA
Wednesday, June 11, 2008
Oprah Winfrey backed presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama some time ago, but some are suggesting that the decision to do so cost her.
According to Nielsen Media Research, the average audience for The Oprah Winfrey Show has fallen nearly seven percent this year.
Additionally, Oprah’s Big Give, a philanthropic reality show created and produced by Oprah on ABC, started out as one of the top television programs when it premiered earlier this year, but lost nearly one-third of its audience forcing ABC not to renew it for a second season.
TIME Magazine, however, suggests a different reason why Oprah’s been sliding. After all, Oprah’s television show has been declining for three years, long before she publicly endorsed Obama.
According to the article:
Oprah is perhaps the closest thing America has to a secular religious figure: “The secret to Oprah the goddess was how deftly she balanced her New Testament and Old Testament sides. The friendly New Testament Oprah was benevolent and beneficient, bestowing gifts to the multitudes; in her case Pontiacs, designer shoes and other Oprah’s Favorite Things rather than loaves and fishes. She loved you unconditionally and boosted your self-esteem. She helped you help yourself. But there was a little Old Testament Oprah too: she passed judgment, advocated causes, told you you needed to get right.”
Despite Oprah’s decline, Mosnar Communications, a luxury public relations and global marketing firm, recently announced that the Oprah Winfrey brand is the most sought after and trusted media influence.
The article states, “The key to bringing her ratings back up may be returning to her show’s theme that people need improvement, but that they, not Oprah, are the final key to their own self-perfection. People love it when you give them Pontiacs. But they still want to do the driving themselves.”
SHARPTON ON NEXT GROUP OF BLACK LEADERS

Civil rights/social justice activist Al Sharpton, who recently announced plans for another Sean Bell protest at this year’s MLB All-Star Game, also recently discussed with NPR’s Farai Chideya his take on the next group of black leaders and what they might accomplish.
Sharpton says, “In every era, we’re always in transition … Every generation has different people who do different things … The biggest confusion that the media gives, Farai, is that they try to have this monolith of black leadership, which they do not do in any other community.”
Check out the interview in its entirety.
MORE KILPATRICK DRAMA

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick just won’t quit. He’s already cost the city millions of dollar with a settlement with three police officers who were fired or forced to resign for investigating claims that Kilpatrick used his security unit to cover up extramarital affairs. Now, a fourth officer has filed suit against the city, saying he was wrongly forced from his position.
If only the City Council could force Kilpatrick from his.
In proposed rules made public Tuesday, any attempt by the Council to oust Kilpatrick will require a majority of its nine members to sit through every minute of the forfeiture hearings and only those who attend can vote on his fate. The hearings are scheduled to begin July 7.
The mayor’s political career is not the only one at risk. His mother, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, is currently faced with two other Democratic candidates vying for the 13th Congressional District seat she has held since 1996. State Sen. Martha Scott and former state Rep. Mary Waters both entered the race after Mayor Kilpatrick was charged with eight felony counts relating to a whistle-blower lawsuit, which the city ended up settling for $8.4 million in taxpayer money.

I think Time magazine has some points. In terms of Oprah, all good things come to an end. Oprah has made an indeliable mark on our culture that will never go away, nor can that be taken from her. Her ratings slide could possibly be attributed all things ending (a la “Law and Order Franchise, ER, etc). I am also aware that due to healthy lifestyle choices, television in general, is an overall downturn. However, I can see that her target audience (middle class white woman) probably are taken aback by her choice. Those folks seems to forget that Obama is her state Senator. Perhaps she chose him for that reason, as well as her own personal reasons.
Frankly, I’m sure that Oprah could give a phuck what anybody thinks about her choice of who to support for pres, just like the rest of us.

I agree with #5. Oprah has proven herself to be a media mogul, so it would seem that maybe her time has come to step back awhile and have people miss her. when you have her magazine, her show and all the other products or shows out about you, people can get saturated with the same thing and therefore grow tired of it. I am not suggesting that she should stop at all, just take a break, regroup and come back with a different look.

Of course they want to blame any and everything on Obama. I think Oprah’s rating went down because for one audiences are getting younger and may not be so entertained by Oprah. Honestly it is not affecting Oprah anyways. Look how long she’s been in television, with her own production company. I think she honestly loves hosting her show because otherwise she could just produce younger shows with a younger host while she kicks back and collect money.

You would only have needed to read the comments of Oprah’s “Core Audience” in the weeks immediately following her open endorsement of Obama to realize that the truth of the matter is that she made upper-middle class (white) Hillary supporters furious and they are her core audience. Her ratings have been affected by their outrage. The comments were horrible and even went to the extent of calling Oprah a “traitor”. They were insanely angry. I kept wondering why they seemed to feel so betrayed. It is as though they had forgotten that Oprah was black. Oprah is amazing and she doesn’t need the money from the show. She can do whatever she wants to do. But make no mistake, her endorsement of Obama hurt her ratings. It is unfortunate and very pathetic but it is true.

Now Oprah realizes how black her ass really is…Do you guys remember the O.J. Simpson verdict? Oprah broadcast the verdict live on her show and when the “Not Guilty” verdict was read, you could tell Oprah was elated but she couldn’t show her emotions like the rest of us Black folks did, because she had all these white people in her audience crying and shit? Oprah has been catering and appeasing white folks for so long that she has made billions of dollars and the one time she sides with her own, she loses.
That is why it is imperative for Black People to stick together because there is a definitely an undertone racist factor out there. Meaning, if you are a major player in any industry, if you appear too black or support any black causes, you’ll be colluded against. That is why Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and a slew of other Black celebrities stay away from black issues out of fear that it might hurt their images and or marketability. It is like there is a force out there that forces black people to sell-out in order to be successful. I bet if Oprah had come out and said she supported McCain or Hilary, she would not have been affected negatively, as far as ratings are concerned. The only that would happen to her is that she’d become a pariah in the black community and to be frank black folks didn’t put Oprah on top…white folks did. Look, Black folks tore her down when she built that school in Africa saying she should have built schools here in America, in addition to other diatribes. So, call a spade a spade, blacks do not support blacks….Not every black person supports Obama (which is beyond my comprehension, but that is a whole different topic of discussion)
So Oprah is caught in a dilemma….but if I were her I would rather go broke for something I believe in than to sell out my own race and become a lackey, a footstool for white people for the sake of ratings.

Does her ratings really have to do with who she is voting for?Maybe so, but I don’t think that is the point at all.
But you can’t please everybody.Oprah has achieved a lot and that is all that matters. She made herself happy than I’m happy for her.I know she probably thought about her audience, but Oprah has a mind of her own and if they didn’t like her for that, they didn’t like her at all-only probably for gifts.Oprah hit the fan when she had that pregnant guy/woman on there. It was just a wrapped to me.

Few things are constant in this world. But some things are.
Death.
Taxes.
The success and staying power of Oprah Winfrey.
Oprah has done it all, seen it all, and is striving to do more! All of these people predicting the fall of the house of Oprah are insane. One does not get to where she is without knowing how to play the game and play it exceptionally well. The entire country is currently in a recession therefore I would assume that her middle class viewers are feeling the pinch. Only the super rich are safe from the current economic crisis. She backed Obama and that paid of beautifully. She saw the potential in him. Another great investment of her time and star power!
PS: Remember when Jerry Springer and Ricki Lake were the most popular shows on TV? People were again doubting the power of Oprah Winfrey. And I think we all know who came out on top from that circle..
Oprah Winfrey is a tour de force. And people can try to bring her down. But she always rises. Focus on building your own wealth and success. Oprah got hers together.

dukesman2000; you hit the nail on the head. but i want to know why are all these preachers coming out of the woodwork now. somebody please tell them to stick to saving souls. man you can make this stuff up. this is baracks time let the light shine on him . we don’t need more so-called preachers, ministers, bishops etc……….. stepping in his spotlight. we’ve already been thur one debacle w/ a preacher, so step back men of god and let god do his will. he is the one who will really oversee this election. so the best you preachers can do is stay in the back ground and this time lets not let the “background sing”. just pray and hush for a while. cause you got a lot of race -hat’n two-legged demons that don’t want to see this thing happen. AMEN. and preachers, the real men who were truly GOD no disrespect.

Im sorry, but that Time article is a bunch of b.s. Maybe I watching an entirely different Oprah show then other people. I never got this whole new religion people think Oprah is pushing. If people are talking about the Eckhart Tolle since this whole “Oprah is the Anti-Christ” belieft recently started since she endorses the book, the majority of people (in my opinion) who think that by having the book on the book club, its a New Age philosophy or ‘new religion” obviously have not read the book. The book mentions and brings up the subject of Jesus and Christianity in great detail. The book which the author and Oprah have said in their own words would only enhance your religious beliefs, bc newsflash not all of Oprah’s fans are Christians. If the condemnation is occurring bc of the various shows on self-enlightenment, well then people have been living under a rock bc she has been doing shows like that for years now. And by the way, what is wrong with self-improvement? If some people not only watches her show, but her aftershows or even when others interview her, Oprah always says that her true passion is always helping people live the best life they can. She said herself that being called the ‘most influential’ while nice, is not her true motivation and intent. Her purpose is to give people the keys and tools to better themselves and I for one have felt her influence and her motivation. Im motivated by her almost daily. So if this in fact a new religion, sign me up and I will be at her next service..

Some informed adults understand the Lord controls everything and Obama is not a modern day saviour . So, I don’t understand how that topic is beyond your comprehension . As far as the school thing goes , I will not support her just because she went over to Africa and built up schools when there are “African American ” children in the states that need those schools just as bad . I truly believe in Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote “The ultimate measure of a person is not where they stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where they stand in times of challenge and controversy.” And for that, I have a new profound respect for Oprah…because let’s keep it real. We all know what the Oprah Show’s main audience is; WHITE MIDDLE-CLASS WOMEN…And they were for Hillary, so for Oprah to turn around and support Obama pissed them off…I believe Oprah can bounce back-up…this isn’t the first-time she has had low ratings. I really contemplated hard and long if your comments toward me deserved a response. You obviously have no comprehension skills if you interpreted my argument as a “pathetic, ignorant diatribe” against Oprah. If you read my dictation in its entirety, instead of leaning on your own misunderstandings, you would have seen where I stated the importance of black people sticking together, because there is a collusion against black people when we do stick together.
And no my friend, I vote for Obama not only because he is black but also because I see him as a unifier; someone who transcends across all races. I see a competent, articulate, innovated, brilliant orator. I also see someone who has the best interest at heart for all Americans…black, white or yellow. See the difference between me and you is: I vote for Obama because he encompasses all the aforementioned qualities, while mystified, assholes like you will not vote for him because of ONE reason…he is black. And that my friend makes you a despicable nincompoop.
Breaking chains have become the norm for Barack Obama so there isn’t anything scumbags like you can do to stop the inevitable. When Obama wins the national election you can just do the world a favor and just kill yourself.

You are African American I am assuming. You think Oprah should not have built the school in African because you subconsciously believe Africans are less human than you and don’t deserve any kind of help let alone an education. You cannot hate the root of a tree with out hating the tree; hence, you cannot hate your roots without hating yourself. So that makes you a self hating ignoramus.
I agree totally with Oprah’s move to build the African school. America is one of the richest countries in the world. If they can spend 10 billion dollars a week on a war that was never authorized, can’t you think of other national issues where those monies could have been spent? Hint: our public school system. Don’t be mad at Oprah, Oprah is an individual who used her own money, to do what she believes is a great cause. Go scream at your federal government who see you and the rest of black folks in the same light in which you look at the African….less than human.
Ignorant ass bitch!!!!
If you are not African American then fuck off because you have no right meddling in Black People’s affairs…..

I dont know about yall but the first time I saw Barack was on Oprah 2004-2005 I believe when he was pushing his book. So she has been a vital part of his rising long before he announced he was running and it would have been WORSE retracted her support after the fact.

@ Dukesmen . Lmao First and foremost I must say your mother did a great job of making you an emotional effeminate . Secondly I’m not from Africa I’m from Isreal . During the Roman-Jewish War my people migrated into West Africa ,and 1600 yrs llater where brought here to America . I feel sorry for the ignorant so Im going to give you a list of book to refrence with irrefuteable evidence of where we really came from . (Basil Davidson “A guide to African History “,Ammi Ben “The black Man’s Truth ,Josephus Flavius “the Roman Jewish War ” … The list goes on ) . Now you brought your wanna be politically correct ass on here like you were dropping some knowledge and you like so many of your counterparts are dumb as hell and don’t know your real history only what the “whiteman” (Who so many of you cry about ) Has taught you in school . Negro please ! Sit your tired bitchy ass down untill you can stand back up like a man and teach me something . This is why our race is destroyed now . We have dumb , half-assed men like you running around talking out of your ass . Now respect the “bitch” who taught your stupid ass something today !

I was done with Oprah when she started that New Age religion crap. It is a shame, this woman doesn’t even have any respect for Jesus. It’s one thing to say I believe in Christ and then say I am God. That’s ridiculous to sit there and dictate God’s authority. It’s simple you either believe or u don’t believe. God doesn’t force us to be christian, he just gives us a way to him and that’s through his son Jesus Christ.
While of you glamourizing her for her success, which I’m not hated on but I don’t admire, actually I feel sorry for her because she has no one to share all her fortune with no children, no husband, no family, NO NOTHING. Out of all of her success what can she say she has accomplish. She’s been alive how long and she still doesn’t get it. Money doesn’t change anything, and the simple fact she doesn’t acknowlege God for her blessings, makes it clear on who she really is and what kind of character she instores in herself.
Y’all can take this anyway you want I’m just stating what I feel and what’s right. By the way OBAMA 08′

I don’t know where this “other religion” came from, but last time I checked Oprah was still a Christian (at least two years ago when she and Barack Obama attended the same church she was). As a radio/tv broadcasting major, I can say tv ratings are down as a whole it has nothing to do with who people support politically (although I do think Oprah will loose some support behind her choice).

Oprah doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone anytime or anywhere. She has fulfilled any teachings of Jesus by giving back and doing for others. Anyone who passes judgment on her is only pointing out their misunderstanding of what Jesus was about. It’s amazing to me the so-called Christians that come on various gossip sites spouting this nonsense and judgment. Judge not, lest ye be judged, now that’s a Scripture I know.
P.S. Not every one wants to be or is Christian. And furthermore, the people in my life who actually represent the teachings of Jesus as I understand them - are by far the least religious. That should tell you something.

Black people sticking together what a joke.
We will never stick together. Just read some of the negative comments we make about each other including other sites.
Hell, we never needed any other race to make us feel inferior because we do it to ourselves.
Damn!

@Divainva
It is better for someone to think you’re an idiot than for you to write what you’re thinking and prove them right…..
See, you write in ambiguous terms. I cannot really address you in the manner in which I would like, because I don’t know your race. You claim you are jewish; I don’t know if you are a real jew who is Black or the white imposters who call themselves jews today.
I will not argue with a fool like you because that would mean I would have to stoop to your cesspool level and I would be out of my element and you’d beat me from experience.

@ Dukesman , please brother . Just throw the towel in already . “stoop to my level ” ,but you addressed me as an “ignorant bitch “, please . See how I calmed you right on down . If you can’t refute anything I said , our conversation is over . Your last post addressed nothing on the topic we are discussing . As I predicted a bunch of so called personal attacks . SO, you know the real “jew” is black but you don’t know we’re not from Africa !? And I’m the fool ?! Lmbao ..

And you are right…my mother did an excellent job. She raised two wonderfully brilliant children one is CPA (which is me) and my sister is Register Nurse studying to become a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner.
Now as for your mother, why couldn’t she just do the world a great justice and swallowed you like she did your other siblings.
