POLITICAL ROUNDUP: OBAMA & CLINTON / MD’S FIRST BLACK FEMALE IN CONGRESS / MCCAIN’S NEW AD

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and former rival Sen. Hillary Clinton will make a public appearance together next week for the first time since Clinton ended her presidential campaign.

Clinton’s top donors received an invitation from National Finance Director Johnathan Mantz, saying:

“As we move forward, we invite you to join us for a National Finance Committee meeting with both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on Thursday, June 26th in Washington, D.C., to discuss how we can work together to support Barack Obama and the Democratic Party.

“Hillary ran for President because she wants to put this country on the right track. She continues to fight and stand strong for our values and priorities and will do everything she can to unify the party and to elect Barack Obama the next President of the United States.”

Those invited are asked to show unity by donating $2,300 to Obama’s campaign, the maximum amount allowed under federal campaign finance laws.

MD’S FIRST BLACK FEMALE IN CONGRESS

On Tuesday, Donna Edwards became Maryland’s first black woman elected to Congress.

A Democratic lawyer and executive director of the Arca Foundation, Edwards defeated Republican Peter James to serve the remainder of former U.S. Rep. Albert Wynn’s term in Maryland’s 4th District. Since James won his party’s primary in February, he and Edwards will face off again in the general election.

Maryland’s first black elected congressman was Parren Mitchell, who served from 1971 to 1987 in the 7th District.

MCCAIN’S NEW AD

A few of the comments regarding Al Gore’s endorsement of Barack Obama state that it comes a bit too late. But John McCain doesn’t think so.

In an attempt to show himself as a different Republican—one who “stood up to the President and sounded the alarm on global warming five years ago”—the presumptive Republican nominee launched a new ad called “Global”…as in “Warming” to combat the impact of Obama’s recent support from environmental activist Gore. Check it out below.

FIRST… OBAMA’S WIFE WAS CO-HOSTING THE VIEW THIS MORNING. SHE DID GOOD.

  2. AriesRme

Could it be?? I guess we will have to just wait and see who he picks for VP. Besides there is no need for him to show his hand now. He should let McCain sweat it out for a little while longer then catch him off guard with whoever he chooses. Go Obama!

  3. AriesRme

Oh and I can’t wait to see Michele on the View!

  4. exclusive

    go head edwards!!!

  5. AriesRme

I really hope the new congresswoman can help my city Baltimore get it together cause it needs it BAD!!!

…and McCain ad is corny I’m glad hes jumping on the band wagon for the environments sake but please that will change once he gets into office.

  6. RATED: 5 *****

its just funny to me how Clinton can suddenly promote Obama for her own personal gain…….this sh*t is mad crazy man!

  7. Lady Architect

I really don’t want Obama to have Hillary as a running mate and hope he doesn’t feel pressured by those who say if he doesn’t have Hillary he will not win. That’s a bunch of BS.

    Congrats to Donna Edwards.

John McCain was full of it. He didn’t think about the altercation between him and Bush when he accepted that endorsement and stuff. Besides he’s too focused on staying in the war for 100 years. He even said he doesn’t care to bring the troops home…smh.

  8. andy

I am so EXCITED about an Obama/Clinton Ticket!!!! Can’t say that I will vote at all if this ticket doesn’t happen.

  9. ThatGirlLinda

Darn it I missed the View this morning. Congrats to Congresswoman Edwards.

  10. poorsean

mccain eat a fucking dick and die, you don’t give a damn about the environment. And don’t tell me that Clinton will be his vice prez, if so it’s all makes sense and it’s all going down hill, well it’s going that way anyway. Barack’s Black ass ain’t gone bring no change, This is a White man’s country, hey ain’t gone let no “zebra” do anything to upset what they’ve been doing for the past 200 years. Barack himself don’t give a damn about the environment, about getting us out of Iraq. And if you don’t know Barack’s billionaire financial advisor was responsible for hundreds of thousands of people in Chicago losing their homes and business AND she made a profit off of it. This is who Obama is dealing with, this is who Barack owes, and it all doesn’t matter at the end of the day. This political shit has turned into tabloid chitter chatter, a diversion from our liberties being taken away.

Barack should stay as far away from Hillary as possible, the woman is so untrustworthy. Big ups to Mrs/Ms.Edwards and good luck in the coming election.

  12. PheonixSky

@ 5, the 4th district includes portions of PG and Montgomery Counties. But the 1st,2nd and 3rd districts representatives represent Baltimore county. I’m not sure which one serves Baltimore city. But I know about the state of the city, let’s just say I can’t say the wire is exaggerating and people need to be held accountable.

John McCain is going to bury his campaign by intentionally distancing himself from Bush. Basically he is saying that Bush is a bad President, but vote for me because even though I agree with a lot Bush says, I am not Bush. What McCain should be doing is showing us who HE is, not how he is different from Bush.

  15. Jayla06

Some of you guy’s are ridiculous lol……. (no need to really say anything else)! Hillary Clinton is a stand up woman who didn’t give in for anybody fought to the end, and yet some people feel the need to ridicule her. I’ll say it again, Obama is not stupid by a longshot…she has over 18 million supporters (including myself), 95% of Hispanics, and 90% of the average blue-collar whites, and 10% of the African American backing….Do your own math, their is no way in hell he will win without Senator Clinton…Why do you think he just called her to have yet another private meeting lol, along with this public appearance? Do you honestly think he gives a flip what your thoughts are on his VP candidate lol? I think not! This man is running for president, and will do anything it takes to get their…..it’s politics people, please stop being so damn naive!

  16. DIAMONDS & GIRLS

John needs to sit his dusty a$$ down somewhere…

  17. DOB

I saw that John McCain ad on TV the other day. He is full of crap! If he’s so environmentally conscious, why is he making a proposal for off coastal drilling for oil, which could cause ocean pollution and only distracts us from finding energy alternatives? Such a contradiction.

  18. Lori

    John McCain scares me!

  19. the one is back

I’m from MD, that is what’s up. We need more sisters in Congress.

As for Barack and Hilary, I do not think its important for them to donate, what is important is suring up votes in Nov that is what he needs not more money. From the politics it appears raising money is not his issue, its getting the snow bunny rednecks to see pass color and the self hating blacks or just got here but don’t trust latinos to vote for him.

  20. *BAYAREA YAYAREA*

Hilary is only supporting Obama just to look good so wtf-Congrats to Ms.Donna Edwards for making history-McCain is so old and tired.

  21. CLEARMINDED

Congrats to Donna Edwards — hope she does well!

McCain talking about the environment is like R Kelly talking about child welfare — no credibility at all! The Obama v. McCain debates are going to be a trip, LOL!

And just say NO to an Obama/Clinton ticket — it will never happen, and it *should* never happen for about a million reasons. It’s hilarious that just a few months ago she was trying to offer him the VP slot even though she was behind — LOL @ the nerve, but ya gotta love Hillary.

Michelle looked gorgeous on The View today, and was charming. They’re trying to tear her down, but she keeps proving ‘em wrong. She’ll make a great First Lady! Pretty picture of them on US Weekly this week…

  22. dukesman2000

Hillary is summoning all her cash cows to come through with the dough to fund Obama’s campaign. That is an admirable and excellent move on Clinton’s part. Together I think those two can raise a billion dollars. I have never donated to a campaign before, but I will definitely contribute this time around. I am willing to do anything to see Black people’s dream come true…..

I swear John McCain has Alzheimer’s or he is demented or something. Every issue that he touches he has found ways to contradict himself. First he said he was independent and now he is running as the dirty republican he truly is; then he said he was different from Bush but he stands next to him on all of his failed policies and cowboy democracy. He said he supports the troops but voted against a GI bill which would give veterans more money for school (I guess he only supports them when they are in Iraq or in a casket). Now he is running as a “green president”? Is it me or didn’t he just recently stated that he supported the idea of more drilling for oil? I thought as a nation we were trying to get away from our dependence on oil. McCain’s plans would lead to more oil dependence, more burning of fuel, more pollution and higher oil prices which will ultimately send our economy to hell in a hand basket.

And his wife Cindy, who is a former drug addict….oh y’all didn’t know that? Oh yeah she was hooked on Percocet and Vicodin for years. And like all “base heads” she used to steal the drugs, get this, from her own charity organization. Yet still, I hear people trying to compare this piece of trash to Michelle Obama. Michelle has more class in her pinky toe than Cindy McCain has in her whole body. Now the bitch is trying to put on this conventional mommy image, acting like she can cook when she probably can’t even boil water. She was caught taking recipes off other people’s website and posting it on her own website like it’s her own recipe. She immediately took the recipe down when the newspaper called her out on it.

You know what they say; a man’s wife is the window to the man’s character….figure it out for yourselves.

  23. Complicated_25

so great to see my people running politics…(as much as they can)

  24. Ara

Barack, watch out for Hillary!! Hillary did not end her campaign for president, she suspended it, which allows her to continue to raise money to pay off her campaign debt. However, if she wants to start campaigning again for president at the convention, she will be able to do so. DON’T TRUST HILLARY!! WATCH YOUR BACK!!! She’s looking for a mishap that will put her back in the running.

  25. linda

I THOUGHT MICHELLE OBAMA WAS AS GOOD AS IT GETS ON THE VIEW. SHE CAN NOT BE DENIED. SHE IS VERY VERY SMART GRACIA AND BEAUTIFUL AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN. SHE NEEDS TO HAVE A SHOW OF HER OWN. I LOVED WATCHING HER. HOPEFULLY SHE WILL BE ON MORE SHOWS. IF THE VIEW WANT THERE RATINGS TO GO UP THEY WILL HAVE HER ON THERE AGAIN AND AGAIN. WE LOVE YOU FIRST LADY. YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WILL BE THE BEST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN FOR AMERICAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE IN A LONG TIME. GOD BLESS.

  26. YUP

I heard McCain and Barack sat together at Bill Russell’s funeral and were engaging in a convo..I think its a good look for them to come together even though they are on opposite sides of the field.

  27. sillybee

I wonder where Mccain was during the civil rights movement? Probably releases some dogs on the black folks.. he he he

  28. missbrittbritt

    BIG CONGRATS to DONNA EDWARDS!

hopefully now MD’s 4th Congressional District will have a voice that is truly of them. isnt it so trif how Al Wynn Did us? He is a bowl of sour grapes. Stepping down from his congressional seat early because he was upset that he lost the election, forcing the state to decide between holding a costly special election, or not having a representative in Congress for over 1/2 of a year.

  29. Jonathan S

For those of you who say that Obama should not select Clinton as his vice-president…you all might as well go out and vote for McCain. There is absolutley no way that Barack will win without Hillary. The truth is the truth! Without Hillary, he will not win Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Penn, Indiana, Arizona, New Mexico, Mass, Texas… and the list goes on and on. The states he will win are those whose African American community can carry the state for him.. like Mississippi, Louisiana, etc. If he chooses anyone other than Hillary Clinton, he might as well stop campaigning now. Barack knows this, as does his advisers, and the majority of the democratic party. Especially if McCain chooses someone like Romney as his running mate. Yall better start praying for a Obama/Clinton ticket, otherwise we’re going to have a 3rd term of the same administration, with a Bush-clone running the country.

  30. SMH

@22 Oh, now Hilary is not a racist all sudden. It’s funny how you are now singing a different tune.SMH…..also this isn’t my dream but hey I’m not trying cause any rifts, I’m just telling the truth.

  31. I’m happy for Ms. Edwards accomplishment but is it wrong for me to have mixed feelings about all of these you know “Black Firsts” in 2008? I do hope she wins when she has to run again in November.

^waves a dissmissive hand @ Hillary* I’m watching you chick…… you need to stay away from Obama….far away. Don’t trust her Barack *squints eyes in disbelief*

Youtube vid don’t work but I couldn’t care any less about McCain.
