In the June 16, 2008 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands now), “A New Kind of Recession,” Senior Editor Daniel Gross and Newsweek International Editor Fareed Zakaria explain why upbeat forecasts for a quick economic turnaround were wrong and what can pull us out of this financial crisis.
OBAMA AT OLYMPIC RALLY

Barack Obama (pictured with Olympic athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley ) attended the Chicago 2016 Olympic rally over the weekend at the Daley Center Plaza.
HILLARY BACKS OBAMA
With Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign officially over, she is focusing on making sure her supporters back Sen. Barack Obama’s bid. Sen. Hillary Clinton suspended her presidential campaign on Saturday.
As Clinton closed her campaign Saturday, she urged the cheering crowd of thousands to support Obama in his run for the White House, saying she and supporters should
“take our energy, our passion and our strength and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama … I ask all of you to join me in working as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me.” (CNN)
Shortly after the speech, Obama released a statement praising Clinton’s presidential run.
“Obviously, I am thrilled and honored to have Sen. Clinton’s support. But more than that, I honor her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run. She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams. And she inspired millions with her strength, courage and unyielding commitment to the cause of working Americans.”

ILL TELL YOU IM SCARED AS HELL, NOT JUST GAS IS HIGH, MILK EGGS BREAD, THE LIST GOES ON
I agree #2….Have you seen the price of milk lately? I went into the grocery store the other day and spent $50.00 and i’m still wondering what did I buy lol.
As far as this recession, it will get far worse before it will get better!! I only hope that many of the lower class americans such as myself, can weather the storm. Because if the economy continues to put middle-class americans in a slump, think about us lower-class americans. After this recession there will only be two classes of americans: The have and the have not!!!
yeah, things will get far worse. All in the name of power
*************************** i totally agree with you #3. i went to the grocery store over
the wknd and bought $150 worth of groceries and my
freezer still looks empty. we should all be scared.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I agree everything is going up I barely >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>grocery shop I am saving that for gas
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>I am sooooooooooooooooo happy for>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Obama
It’s gonna get worse than this $5 gas in on the way. The saddest thing is all these people, will full-time jobs, having to go the food bank to get food. My heart goes out to everyone who’s struggling.
This is very scary! The economy is so messed up right now. I’m a college student and I wonder how the price for tuition will be effected by what’s going on right now. I am very happy for Obama though and it’s nice to see that Hillary is trying to get her supporters to support him but I am very scared for the future of the U.S. I really am…
yeah #2: i’m scared too. i picked a fine time to decide on buying a car.
out here in l.a. some areas already have $5 gas prices.
and as far as milk’s concerned, i’m considering soy. LOL
*Nerd Girls* lol..yeah that fits in nicely
@ #11 Yahoo reported that California has the highest gas prices and lucky for me, Missouri has the lowest but still this is crazy!
Its hard to believe that in 2000,a gallon of gas and milk were under a single dollar. It is vital that Barack wins, the next president will appoint three, that’s right folks, three judges to the supreme court.McCain will appoint judges that will strip away the few rights that we still have, affirmative action will be a thing of the past, more wars in the name of national security, bottom line McCain=more of the same b.s.
Before everyone has a meltdown, please consider that you (and this country) are hardly going through rough times. Consider those in other countries who still dream to live as Americans, can’t afford to spend $20 at the grocery store, and prolly don’t even have vehicles. We definitely live beyond our means, and I think this “recession” is a good way for us to step back and prioritize our funds…
I feel everybody’s pain. Just graduated with Masters and struggling to make ends meet…but instead of getting scared or pessimistic, just keep pushin and. Many generations before us have done the same.

My friends, this American Economy is falling and falling fast. As these big oil companies record multi-billion dollar profits i.e. Exxon Mobile, middle class Americans are finding it more and more difficult to feed their families. The Bush Administration has been in bed with these oil companies for many years and we’ve all seen the ugly offspring that union has produced. These big oil companies are big time lobbyists in Washington, so the more profits they see mean the more donations for politicians; with no remorse for the strain on the American people. There is a saying that goes…while elephants play the grass gets trampled. And that is exactly what’s going on in Washington.
The Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is supposedly conducting an investigation in the possibility gas price manipulation. My question is: Where was this investigation when oil went from $50 a barrel to $75 a barrel…or from $75 to $100 a barrel? Now at $135 a barrel, the horse has gone through the gate and is at a point of no return. The most people can do right now is hold on to your jobs, cut back on spending, save as much money as you can, if you can and stock up on guns and ammunition. Why guns and ammo? Because people are starving and the first rule of nature is self reservation. If someone cannot find food to feed his or her families; he/she will come get yours. There will be civil unrest!!!
I mean’t self-preservation….
I’m about to volunteer at a Food Bank – I’m a promoter here in the Chi, but I know I can put what I do to better use – and get ppl to donate food or something!
I was just watching CNN and caught the peice about Food Banks running out of food and not being able to help as many people – and that the food crisis is spanning demographics now…. it’s not just the homeless and people who live below the poverty line that need help anymore…. due to these shady BUSHONOMICS there are middle class and upper middle class people who are far from making ends meet.
In other news – CONGRATS OBAMA…. annnnnd – I’m proud of Clinton for doing the right thing.
I am VERY surprised with what Hillary said! good fro her tho.
I’m not surprised by the recession at all. People need to pick up the Bible more often. This was prophesied to happen. No man (including Barack) is going to solve the problem seeing that man is the cause of the problem.
……I think she made that positive remark because she was put on blast for not s…..saying something positive bout him. damn its only right to congrats the man…. ..
…….he did a damn good job. so her people was probably like “ok hillary you have to
…….congrats him because your hating is showing and it aint cute”
@19 Donate food?! That is a noble thing for anybody to do, but let’s be realistic. Most of America and including me, can’t even keep a tank full let alone give away food that our family needs. If you can donate food and volunteer at the Food Bank then more power to you and I commend you for doing it. This has nothing to do with Bush. Did you know that perfectly good food gets dumped in the water or destroyed because the government orders it? Or even worse, there’s plenty of food in governmental storehouses that aren’t distribute to the people. They have been doing this years before Bush came into office but the majority of the media doesn’t even tell you this.
>>>>@#19 Becca Baby – I’m in the Chi, too. Let me know how I can help. Let’s do
>>>>>>it for real!
it only goes to show , who is really running this civilization and this is spread global. its called globalization. its all vanity see there is nothing new under the sun. let me share w/ you the latest caper that was pulled on the gullible ones. THE PREAKNESS ; did you see the looks on all them faces of the people in the stands. who had been TOOK, YOU’VE BEEN HOOD-WINKED , YOU BEEN BAMBOOZLED. they were all sitt’n in the stands looking like “andy gump” . that horse big brown didn’t even place in the race for a purpose . you got nothing for all that money you folks bet. all that money you bet and the mob made sure that you didn’t get a nickle. this is also a example or [corealation]of who is running the show in washington. its like the movie the ‘gangs of new york’. where certain groups have craved out their territory ,and the bounty or spoils is only for their kind or their crew. i hope barack don’t fall for the trap that they are laying for him . 10 town hall meetings this is insane . people were fed up w/ the hillary /obama debates and were getting turned off hearing the same old things spun in a different way debate after debate, this kind of forum will not work.GO BACK TO THE PAST , like the kennedy-nixon [3] debates. can’t [barack] he see that they are trying to pull him off the campaign trail where he is viruatally treated like a rock star. the republicans got think-tanks and scheme tanks, thinking of ways to derail his campaign. in other words the “swiftboats are on the way”. thats why the ol fox [mccain] is trying to lure him into his sit-down fox den for 10 town halls disscusions PLEASE I’AM BEGG’IN YOU, don’t subject us to this. when actually we have heard it [the talk] and speeches all before. its why YOU GOT TO COME FRESH W/ A NEW MESSAGE. this is my two-cents for the obama campaign. tell nas that if and when barack is elected president it is out of our hands. and to give a president advice is foolish WHEN i’am sure his cabinet will be very capable of that job. sorry about my diatribes.
Is it me or does Obama look like he has aged A LOT since he started campaigning? I am so glad Hillary finally started to think about others instead of herself for a change. As for the food, go on out to Sam’s and stock up. If you can’t afford it, then I guess the U.S. will be going on a all liquid diet!
GO OBAMA!!!!…..but I truly believe if he wins the country will blame him for the recession and all the economic woes we are experiencing right now. It will take a minutes for Obama to turn this mess around that George W got us in. So I pray he will get the support if he gets into office.
#27 M, I agree. I know for a fact they will blame him if he wins. Of course the black man has to clean up the mess and if he doesn’t then it’s his fault, when he wasn’t even the one that started the mess!
Weather the storm people!! What else to do. I was struggling when there was no “recession” so what is going to change now that there is one? I will still be struggling.
None of this is surprising to me. As gas prices climb, so does the price of food due to transportation cost and such. I am in college and I am struggling to get food as well as gas I’m telling you rice milk is great and cheaper than regular milk. I will be on a huffy in the near future. I am glad that Hillary decided to do the right thing, but I believe she only did it because she was backed into a corner, not because it was truly what she wanted to do. As for Bush, we all know he doesn’t care and it is a miracle that he has been allowed to get away with things for so long. He has gotten away with so much it’ ridiculous. It’s all a part of his plan. Look up the North American Union on youtube and see what I am talking about. As for everybody, make sure you have your house in order because things are quickly wrapping up !
*****************yeah, i do believe a lot of this stuff is biblical and there’s not a
**************whole lot we can do ( or Obama, for that matter) other than batten down
************* the hatches and wait for the storm to pass. I cannot believe how expensive
******things like food have become. My son is on formula now but what to do when
******he starts table food? I’m just going to keep the faith.
Am I surprised by this, NO. I’m glad I took finance as a major in college. I already knew and I was laughing at how people would spend dollars on Hummers in their 6 Bedroom 4 bathroom house ($500,000) and working as a cashier. The people in lala land allow this to happen and when everyone was cheering that it was a great time to buy a home, you all jumped on the bandwagon. the problem is that we’re living out of our means. Leave the rims, upgraded radio, weekend parties and sport package alone, you all need to get your priorities right. I already stocked on my supplies for food and equipment. This was way to easy to see back in 2002 when I found out a cherry picker making $14,000 a year and purchased a mansion. Bill Clinton did not do anything for us either, talking about free trade is right thing to do (well how do you thing expenses will be paid, they pass it down to the taxpayers) and when he allowed one of the acts, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and this is the cause to the subprime mortgage problems. Haven’t you guys seen how gas stations have two different prices for gas, one for cash value and the other for credit card users (which is usually higher)? People please don’t fall for that crap of a hybrid because it’s only beneficial on local driving and if america wants to really save us, they would of done the same thing the Venezuelan does, they use sugar cane as their gas and you don’t hear about it because America wants the information shielded from us. Good luck to everyone and I hope everyone does their research while I’m pondering on whether to leave this country or not.
god help us all!!!
All I can say is god have mercy on the ones that live pay check to pay check an have kids like myself cause it’s getting harder day by day. I haven’t seen so many homeless people like see now an it getting worse. The U.S is blamed for this gas crisis cause they new something like this would happen an they could have come up with some other source to replace this outrageous gas prices. The U.S. spend money on the unnecessary the the necessary.
Maybe it’s time to pack up and and leave the states!! We are slowly falling apart..
I am from CA here we have been paying over $4 per gallon for gas for weeks, in fact we have been paying 3.70 and up for months! Gas here has been rising every 48 hours and people are going crazy. At one point this state had the highest forecloser rate in the country (I believe we have the second or third highest now), and Arnold S. is cutting a lot of money from the school, nurse, healthcare and public services budget.
I definitely miss when five dollars went a long way. You might as well roll it up and smoke it now, or give it to the kids. I guess we just got too complacent.
I JUST SPENT $60 TO FILL UP MY NISSAN ALTIMA
yeah im moving back home after my lease is up so I can go back to school and get myself out of debt..
Perez is completely and utterly right. I don’t feel sorry for NO DAMN ONE unless they have their priorities straight. Bitches kept whoring themselves for designer tags, dude popping each other off the earth for new rims and NOW the children are following in their parents and/or role models mistakes. Its all a vicious cycle and unless you’ve tried to break it… I don’t feel sorry for you or this society. WTF is Kobe making millions while EDUCATORS and even DOCTORS are barely getting by? WTF can Kanye sit pretty after dropping thousand of dollars on a shopping spree in LA (exaggeration lol) while a child is sitting at home alone because their parents have to work overtime while the school had to cut after-school programs as a result of no funds???? Our whole society is FUCKED… that’s why. Hasn’t anyone noticed the socioeconomic gap??? That shit has widen over the last few years BEYOND rapidly. Why? Because ppl are STUPID/SHALLOW and wanna live vicariously through “The Hills” characters. Because ppl wanna idolize athletes rather educators. Because ppl wanna indulge in instant gratification w/o thinking like a RESPONSIBLE human being should. When did we become so consumed w/ the WANT instead of common sense and NEED???? Ppl have NO priorities and can’t think for themselves. “Go buy this…” “Go elect that…” “Say ‘yes’ to this…” I’ve read the comments and the majority haven’t pointed out the real blame: YOURSELF! I just LOVE how ppl can complain how shitty things have gotten when YOU are responsible. You are apart of this society aka YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for your consequences. WE are all WE have so make it fucking work and learn from this major mistake!
LOL @ #40.. tell us how you really feel.
Good points though. People will never learn.
Obama has no barrings on the prices of GAS people . The war in Iraq is only a small reason why the gas prices are so high . The value of the American dollar has decresed to oil traders .fueleconomy.gov , I believe gives a lot of information about the gas economy
“FAUX NEWS ONCE AGAIN PROVING WHY THEY ARE THE SKID MARKS ON THE UNDERPANTS OF SOCIETY”
So I was over at Huffingtonpost.com
and was pretty disturbed at something I read…Now I knew Faux news was bad..but I didn’t know it was this bad. They have already had to fire an anchor woman for referring to Barack and Michelle’s fist bump as a “terrorist fist jab.” Now some other simple ass chick has called Michelle, “Barack’s Baby Mama”… I think we really need to do something about this news.
