I don’t watch MTV like that, but I do dig the little artist spotlights they give to a new artist every week during commercial breaks and in between shows (kind of backwards, eh?).
Anyway, this week was dedicated to Santi ‘Santogold’ White. I’ve been hyping her for awhile now because their is finally a chick in the limelight that I can sort of relate to. With that said, peep some of these videos shot exclusively for the MTV spot. See all of them here..

It’s crazy that someone can come out and completely imitate another artist, add a dash of alternative soul and be considered original. She’s just another chick who was manufactered using the M.I.A. mold of eccentricity.

ALL MUSIC INCLUDING ALTERNATIVE MUSIC HAS TRACES & INFLUENCES FROM HIP HOP, R&B AND SOUL.
COLDPLAY IS A PRIME EXAMPLE. CHRIS MARTIN HAS SOUL IN HIS VOICE.
I’m diggin her sound & style. So not typical of the mainstream, which is boring and predictable. Santi reminds me of my girl Res (How I Do) who made a small wave, but quickly disappeared some years ago. I loved her album as well, still play it. Thanx for featuring Santogold, I’ll have to check her out now.
OMFG # 7 took the words right out of my mouth. I dont listen to this chick at all but when I saw her artist spotlight, I was like how she just gonna swipe MIA’s(who I also cant stand) style. Now we got 2 artists out there with this stupid music. Be original chick. And I dont even believe half of you like her as much as you say you do. Bandwagon jumpers.

@caff actually she’s pretty different from m.i.a. if you’ve heard her album. m.i.a. would never sing songs like “i’m a lady” or “starstruck” or “you’ll find a way”. her voice is also different b/c m.i.a. mostly talks in a sing-song way. her voice is smooth. and santo actually sings with a scratchy voice. they dress differently. m.i.a. has style imo and i don’t like santo’s style but santo is less glamorous than m.i.a. and less sexy with her clothing.they even perform differently. basically there aren’t that many similarities between them. i think you’re being thrown off by songs like CREATOR but most of santo’s songs aren’t like that anyway. i personally enjoy santo’s music more but like m.i.a. image more

oh and their vid concepts are VERY different so idk where that came from. m.i.a.’s vids center more around reality (i.e. she tends to have everyday ppl in her vids etc.). so far santo’s vids are more conceptual. the vid for les artistes is diff from anything m.i.a. has done.

I dont think she’s bitting off of M.I.A’s sound at all. They’ve worked with some of the same producers so your sound is bound to be similiar. That happens with anyone.
And as far as her style is concerned, M.I.A is not the only one on earth who has that style, there are so many people who like to dress like that. It just so happened that M.I.A blew up first.

Well I can’t say thats art and I can’t say she’s original. But I can say that video if it’s any indication as to what is to come is Garbage.
I like her album, but she’s not very animated in her videos Maybe I’m just used to the Hype Williams, Kanye West explosions, flying midgets, supaman, chicken noodle soup dancing grand productions, or just videos that resemble some kind of story,whether it’s the cliche big house, big car, etc., but her videos are boring.

She is HOT!! The music is different and the industry needs that. Everyone wants Lil Wayne and T-Pain… all day, everyday (even though Wayne is fire). Nothing new, nothing exciting. But everyone is entitled to an opinion and this may not be for you personally.

Santi has been in the music industry for a long time people. Maybe if some of you people did your research and started listening to different types of music you would know that Santi was an A&R rep, lead singer of the punk-ska band Stiffed and produced and wrote RES’ debut album How I Do. She is not biting MIA. Santi’s album is pretty diverse. There are songs on her album that MIA would never do. Plus MIA’s music is more political and addresses more world issues than Santi’s music. They are both talented women. Support both of them.

I second Ginger Lee’s response. Santi’s been around for a looong time (she kind of refuses to state her age) and she and MIA are good buds and pretty much are apart of the same music collective (kind of like how D’Angelo, the Roots, Erykah Badu, et.al were apart of the Soulqaurians).
