BLACK HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: DR. MARK DEAN

Dr. Mark Dean (1957-) is an American inventor and computer scientist.

Born March 2, 1957, in Jefferson City, Tennessee, Dr. Dean was a bright and energetic child who was often asked by his classmates if he was really black because, according to them, black people were not supposed to be that smart. He excelled both athletically and academically and continued his success in college as he graduated at the top of his class with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1979.

The following year, Dean was invited to join IBM as an engineer. Despite his new position, Dean continued his education and received a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University in 1982. As an engineer for IBM, Dean served as the chief engineer for the team that developed the IBM PC/AT, the original home/office computer.

With his friend and colleague, Dennis Moeller, Dean developed the Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) systems bus, a component that allowed multiple peripheral devices such as modems and printers to be connected to a PC, making it a practical and affordable component of the home or small business office. Dean owns three of the original nine patents that all PCs are based upon and followed up with PS/2 Models 70 or 80 and the Color Graphics Adapter, which allowed for color display on the PC.

Dr. Dean decided to continue his education even further and in 1992, he received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. Five years later, he was named director of the Austin Research Laboratory and director of advanced technology development for the IBM Enterprise Server Group. In 1999, his team made significant breakthroughs including the testing of the first gigahertz CMOS microprocessor. He was then named vice president for systems research at IBM’s Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, then as a vice president in IBM’s Storage Technology Group, focused on the company’s storage systems strategy and technology road map. He was later named vice president for hardware and systems architecture in IBM’s Systems and Technology Group in Tucson, Arizona, and vice president of the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California.

In 1995, Dr. Dean was named an IBM fellow, the first black person honored with the highest technical honor awarded by the company. Only 50 of IBM’s 310,000 employees are Fellows. In 1997, Dean was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame with Moeller, joining two other noted black members, George Washington Carver and Dr. Percy Julian. In 2001, Dean was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineers.

Dean made history again recently by leading the design team responsible for creating the first 1-gigahertz processor chip, another significant step in making computers faster and smaller. Today, Dean has more than 40 patents or patents pending and continues to impact the world of computer science.

  11. Lola AM

Very inspiring. I love intelligent brothas!

  12. Focused1

I am in school with a similar techinical background as him, and I also have a few invention ideas I think would really work. Launching an invention is an intense process, so reading what he’s accomplished is inspiring and like a confirmation for me to keep moving forward on what I’m planning to do.

  13. Hazel

As a young black woman in the computer field, this was very inspiring to read. Great post!

  14. realsateofmind

Well done Dr. Dean. Very smart and intellectual man. I wish more of our young black boys/girls knew about black men/women who have made such contributions to society. We are not talked about enough. That is why we must educate ourselves on OUR history..

I have always thought as a whole ,black people are very intelligent. Some of us just chose to direct it in the wrong way or the wrong line of work. Because white people try to keep us oppressed so much, we don’t get a chance. but we can do anything we put our minds to I have always told my children that. Seriously we have already overcame so many obstacles of this great place the called the united states. The only race that is not united is our race.

OBAMA “08″ and not because he is black, because he is a great man!!

  15. Lady Architect

I’m so happy you guys put the spotlight on Dr. Dean because many people hate to give him credit as being the actual architect who designed the systems for IBM.

  16. Umakmesmile

wow, that’ good to know that something that we use everyday was possible by a black man.

  17. fudge

That is a good look for the brotha, I wished he would have branched out and started his own IBM, they have a habit of picking up our brightest and smartest black people.

  18. Toons

Much respect to the talented staff at CL. The reason I keep visting this site is because the content is so diversified–its not always about fashion and music–its also about politics, black history spotlights and various kids and adults graduating across the nation. I love the educational and intellectual content. Keep disseminating the knowledge. I luv it.

  28. datdude

I mean his accomplishments are great but its ironic that a black man helped make a racist company like IBM get richer, i mean the company was involved monetarily in the Holocaust and God only knows what else their hands were on. I don’t mean to hate but for the life of me i can’t understand why we have to honor someone of color if he or she didn’t help change the world for the better. And even if we acknowledge them, so what, the world will continue to be run by bastards and no, not even Obama can change that fact, because Presidents can’t do shit except start useless wars and tell ppl the economy is bouncing back… damn ppl are thick-headed.

It saddens me also to think that as soon as genius in someone is recognized, the powers that be control them and harness their intellect in a way that benefits a selfish cause rather than an altruistic one and we stand back and clap. I wonder if slaves back in the day were proud when fellow slaves got promoted into the plantation house or when some even got the privilege to be “free” and decided to be like smart ole massa and work hard to achieve their very own plantation and slaves. We sure is makin progress, yes we is.

Show me a person of color, shit show me any person that in this day and age is actually doing something beneficial to us all without puppet strings, and let me honor that.
The people that really should be honored may never be known, but I’ll keep a watchful eye for them anyway.

  29. obamamomma

    @Island Gurl

I was hoping the same thing; I just didn’t want to start no mess. LOL

  30. ThatGirlLinda

Wow that’s great all I could say the end was Damn… If they were involved in the Holocaust it was a long time ago. Truthfully if you knew what all companies were involved in what would you do not do business with them

  31. Greatestloveofall

@2, 24 and 32, PLZ SHUT THE F*CK UP AND QUIT SPAMMING! IM TIRED OF THIS SHIT.

ANYWAY, KUDOS TO SUCH AN ENTERPRISING, INTELLECTUAL BLACK MAN. GREAT TO SEE BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN THE WORLD OF ENGINEERING, COMPUTERS AND SOFWARE.

  32. johnosahon

i am also a computer scientist, kudos to this man.

  33. Nice

Good topic, if we see the number of comments it shows why we dont have more people like DR. MARK DEAN, if this was Gossip about Rihana, Beyonce J.Z and so on, the number of comments would probably be greater… YES WE CAN but WE GOT TO CHANGE FIRST, get motivated to get educated, it’s easy as trying to get the next ball player or the next rapper, you need to work hard to be the 1st, and this starts now, read and comment people, there’s no reason to write those hating comments in here…
    good Job CONCRETE LOOP

    Peace

  34. Sanaa

    Thanks laamaj23 and J. Dakar! Truly inspirational…
I hope NSBE membership grows in the coming years, LOL

  35. Sanaa

    32, get a fr*iggin life…

  36. cdnyc

See this is the type of thing our kids need to see. They need to see that they can TRULY be influential and success WITHOUT being a rapper, and entertainter, or an athlete. No offense to any of those professions, but science, technology, business, etc…that’s where the true THINKERS are. Thanks CL.

  37. Toons

@30 an individual like you is what saddens me. That’s the problems with our community, and one of the main reasons why there is so much strife and hate amongst us. When someone accomplishes something that deserves to be recognized and praised, a miserable, jealous envious person like yourself comes along and has to deflect the attention from the achiever because they are unhappy with their own fruitless existence.

You are the epitome of a HATER. You have a bleak outlook on life and are bound and shrouded by the exact same slave mentality you speak of that makes one think they we are limited because of “the man”. I feel sorry for you, it must suck to be you and to be filled with such hate. SMDH

  38. jodi 'black Londoner'

does anybody know where i can purchase the t/shirt I LOVE BLACK PEOPLE ?

I saw Bree from America ‘s Next Top Model wear on a while back……..

  39. ms_mac

    @ Datdude,
What’s really ironic is that if a Black man such as Dr. Dean were to go out and start his own business, he would have probably failed because Black people are notorious for not supporting each other; especially when it comes to business. So I guess he can’t win.

If he works for a racist company (as you elude to without any supportive evidence by the way), he’s a sellout. If he works for himself and tries to market his business primarily to Blacks, he risks going broke and losing that business. And if he gets his own business off the gound and it’s supported primarily by White people, he’s back to being a sellout. I mean damn, what’s a Negro to do?

  40. Big M

@ #34 – you took the words right out of my mouth! hopefully the idiots will take note and take that mess elsewhere…

  41. Jamila B.

This is why I love concrete loop. You guys put up articles with substance also! Great read and congratulations to Mr. Dean!

  42. frank

“On a more gossip-related note, I hope that, if you’re married, your wife is black.” Island Girl is a racist!

  43. KIA

I agree with #41. If he tried to do this on his own, then black people would not support him or at least not enough. You know how most black people are. They want the best or they want what they know, because it must not be as good if they never heard of it. What the hell ever. He succeeded and that’s all that matters.

Thanks CL! I’m a programmer so I’ll read any post involving the IT field. There are a lot of intelligent black people in this field, but most of them can’t even get a chance.

  44. KIA

Or should I say, thanks J. Dakar for the post!

  45. kmniles

    30.

Fault IBM, not Dr. Dean. He didn’t personally invent the technology that catalogued Jews for extermination and you cannot blame him for working for a company that happened to have a seedy past 20 years before he was even born. If your current employer has been in business pre-civil rights then they are guilty of discrimination against your people yet their are millions of us who work for them today. What are YOU gonna do about that?, lol. Seriously, I have no problem with the enlightenment you’ve brought to the Loop today but i do have issues with you trying to diminish his accomplishments. You said, and I quote “I don’t mean to hate but for the life of me i can’t understand why we have to honor someone of color if he or she didn’t help change the world for the better.” Then you have the nerve to say people are thick-headed but do you even realize that the microprocessor and other computer componets ar your desk/cell phone/I-Pod/automobile was part of his genius, and you don’t think that’s worth celebrating? Those things haven’t changed the world for the better? Are you serious? Ok…I guess you have your reasons….Good Day.

  46. 1nubianqueen

Wow! ***giving applause*** Keep doing the work you do Dr. Dean and you too CL!

Very good post C.L and my mom has a degree in computer science.

  52. JUDAH

    @30

I understand what your saying brother but that is the condition of the battle. Black people have notoriously been the one’s behind the vast majority of the achievements in not only America but on planet Earth. The fact of the matter is that due to this captivity and the subsequent demonization of the black man, the best that the black man can do until we are saved is be the tools used for the advancement of others. There are no prominent black men that are allowed to reap the benefits of their inventions. That is one of the curses. Look at what no.5 said in regards to the black man. That is not so much a reflection of her as it is the tenor of this society, how the black man has behaved, and how he’s been trained to view himself. Aside from that though, I agree, all of these “self-made” black men and prominent black people have sold their souls and are being used by the white man as idols for the black masses.

  53. GOOOOOBAMA!!!!

i love the current Black History!!!! History is being made with people that are still alive to this day!!! Great job on celebrating Black history and accomplishments present and past!

  54. Twintron4

I had read about this man before and as far as I am concerned, he is the creator of the modern PC. The computer as we know it…there are so many phenomenally talented black men and women that we are not even aware ever existed. We must educate ourselves—don’t wait on the schools’ Black History Month because that is why so many of us think that Black History is all about sitting in the back of the bus and sipping from separate water fountains. There is more to our genius than that.

To be only 51 years old, this man is still in his youth career-wise. Go Dr. Dean! What an inspiration.

  55. Twintron4

On another note…I just wished he would have put his ideas to work in his OWN business, something like an Oprah Winfrey. It’s sad to see all of his hard work go straight to someone else’s company. But he is still an inspiration to us all—there’s more to us than just music and sports.

  56. TheMrs.

Good post. I will share this with others.
