CNN’S ‘BLACK IN AMERICA’ AIRING ON JULY 23rd & 24th
Sunday, July 20, 2008
I already posted the trailer for “CNN Presents: Black in America” early last month, but since it’s about to premiere in a few days, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to post it again. I also have some exclusive snippets featuring Spike Lee & Russell Simmons (after the cut).
The special is a four-hour television event that examines the complex issues, successes and struggles of black men, women and families in America. Airing July 23rd & 24th at 9pmET/PT. Make sure to check out the official site for more info.

I wish they did something like this in the UK. There is nothing on mainstream TV which specifically looks at or caters to black people and black issues like you have over there in the US. such a shame, because although it is interesting to look at stories of African-Amerians, we as British residents, live in a different country and so have different experiences. It would be nice to see something like this from a Black-British perspective.

Hopefully this special is better than the one that came on last night. I can’t stand when their are panels that talk about issues that deal with the youth, but do not have one young person speak for themselves…That is soooooo elitist! Young people know whats going on, you don’t have talk down to us or not evn include us in the conversation when talking about us.

I have followed Soladad Obrien since her coverage of the War in Iraq. I am glad to see she is getting her big break. Her coverage of the poor response to Katrina was invaluable to the black community, and its good that CNN recognized her talents by granting her the opportunity to tackle such an involved topic during such a time. Is this the Obama influence? Many may not know, but here in ATL the National Black Arts Festival is going on and Black in America is shaping up to be the climax. For more info on the festival visit www.nbaf.org. FIGHT THE POWER!

Honestly I think the presidential campaign and primaries really showed America’s true colors regarding White and Black relations in the US. I don’t believe that this is something that we will be able to overcome because hate is something that is taught. We also have to realize that it is more than a black in white issue in America we always forget about the other races.

I love CNN for doing this but after the credits roll, America will still be what it is. We’ll give them this bird’s eye view into our world and they’ll feel somewhat sympathetic to our struggle, and then go on with their lives. I guess CNN used Soledad to boost the ratings, but what could she possibly know about our struggle? I don’t care how many people she interviewed.
I’ll be watching though to see how distorted their view of our world really is.

Slow ya roll JEWEL13,.. Soledad IS of african descent She is mixed ethnicity, so her struggle is our struggle, regardless of her shade !!
America will still be the way it is because YOU allow it, get a bigger picture and take some action to change things. Start simple with educaing and taking some time out of your week with the young black kids in your neighborhood, they are the next Generation that can be the change you’d like your America to become. Unless you’re going to actually DO something different, how dare you have the audacity to sit there and say it’s gonna be the Same… different results only comes when you apply different method!! don’t talk about it Jewel, be about it!!

LIFE IS LIFE AND THAT MEANS FOR EVERYONE. Hell… you may think poor Tommy w/ his mom on crack and never around has it bad while uptown Erica could have a mom who physically and mentally abuses her daily while hooked on prescription drugs. WOW THATS GOT ME VERY INTERESTED!!!!!!!
And Russell Simmons needn’t come with the shit about “don’t blame the rappers.” OK, it’s not just their fault, it’s bad parenting, HOWEVER, which side of Hip-Hop is he talking about when he says they’re speaking the truth?? You’ve got the conscious, intelligent rappers, but unfortunately America only wants to see a slaveship minstrel show—the ones who glamorise violence, materialism, hate, misogyny and illiteracy to the youth. Tie that in with many (NOTE: I didn’t say ALL!) black kids being raised by deadbeat parents in the ghetto, and there’s BOUND to be a disaster. How about we stop blaming society for our OWN faults, and stop this stupid PC rant about how we’re being oppressed. And STFU for that shit about how the music videos are a “mirror reflection” of sexism in society. Do you honestly think the majority of these dumbass rappers are actually EDUCATED and ENLIGHTENED enough to think like that? As if they could ever satirize the degradation of black women. Watch the video for “What They Do” by The Roots, that’s how conscious MC’s talk about their indignation with the image of commercial rap, with great humour also.
I hate to say it, but rap culture has become so pervasive and synonymous with our community, that it’s likely to be the first thing people of other races think, when considering the African American community. They’re pretty much interchangeable these days. And unfortunately the worst of it has seeped into our value system, creating broken homes, ignorance, deadbeat parents, many men committing crimes and selling drugs, many women degrading their bodies treating the word “bitch” as a term of endearment, kids dropping out of school. Also, where can we see on TV these days the positive black FAMILY, where hip-hop doesnt even play a part in their culture? Surely there are black families out there, even in this, century who can be likened to say the Evans off Good Times, or something?

…With all that said, I still acknowledge that racism in America is still ,sadly, well truly alive! Whether it is abuse of police powers towards black people to the smear campaign against Obama, it is well and clear that the entire COUNTRY needs a fucking message. The rest of the world sees us (cutting across all races) as the dumbest nation on the planet, and it doesn’t surprise me. Too many Americans are so dumb, that they believe they’re the greatest, and see all other countries as “the rest of the world”. Then you have those uneducated redneck patriots blindly chanting “USA! USA! USA!” and you can see why certain countries look at Americans with contempt.
And let’s not forget the biggest farce of them all—the Iraq war. Squandering billions of taxpayers’ Dollars, no peace in Iraq and growing Islamic extremism, triggered by that dumb, warmongering fuckup Bush.

I wanted to make sure to leave a comment to #26 I am sure plenty of white people will watch it out of curiosity after all it is on a news channel so it has a decent following of viewers from all ethnic backgrounds. However, I honestly want to know how many black people are going to watch it that really need to be aware of some of the huge issues going on in the black community. Those that vitally need this information (from all races) will not be the people watching it and that deeply saddens me.

I would like to say this….When black talk about “Islamic terror growing” must just change the Islamic to “Black Power Movement” and then you would know what I’m trying to say.
The USA, has the tyrants(Kings..Saudi, Kuwait, Iraq, etc., in power and they are oppressing the people. If the USA didn’t take their armies and weapons of mass destructions to the Middle East, it wouldn’t be any Sadaam Hussein period. The USA need for cheap oil makes them side with dictators.
Now the people are getting tired of oppression and willing to fight the dictators and the helpers of the dictators “They are extremist” hahahaha!
Tell me people, if the US government paid China to come over and oppress the native people so they can stay in power. Would we be “terrorist”? I advise the African-Americans to look at history and leave the people in the Middle East alone.
The head of the Bin Laden Unit retired from the CIA and said Osama is not a terrorist or mad as the news want us to believe. He is protecting his own and homeland….Michael Scheur is the truth…..http://video.search.yahoo.com/search/video;_ylt=A0geu7oJ0oNIWtQAeBFXNyoA?ei=UTF-8&p=michael%20scheuer&fr2=tab-web&fr=slv8-nick
He said the government of USA messed with the Arabs first to secure cheap oil…so this is about African-Americans leave it as that.
Truth hurts but it has to be told……Peace all!
Another thing African-Americans as a whole don’t go around messing with other people country. Don’t talk about “United we stand” until we can get over “Freedom for all in American” that is complete equality.

It talked about how many people (including his own children) believe that the FBI, CIA, and mafia were in on his murder and that perhaps the man who spent time in jail for the murder was innocent.

I just watched Reclaiming the Dream and I think the information presented gives everyone a lot to think about, but it also gives us concrete ways that we can contribute to improving our condition. I do agree that most of the people who will watch the program probably won’t be the people who need to be watching it, but I also think that it then becomes part of our responsibility to find ways to get the message across. When they discussed education and HIV/AIDS, they gave us concrete simple ways to contribute to improving our condition in America. As opposed to picking apart who is hosting or what the people on the panel do or do not do, we have to listen to the message that was being presented and do what we can to improve the condition of people in America. How crazy is it that 1 in 20 people in DC are infected with HIV, and those are only of the people who actually go in and get tested. It’s time for us to wake up and see that this is not a game, we are dying and need to take responsibility for our lives. Control the things you can and help where you can.

When I watched the first series I was excited about the part they showed where there was a group who main purpose was to go to the houses of kid’s not in school and to encourage them to come back. But what I found so sad is when the boy opened the door and saw them and just turned away like it was nothing and he just did not care. It made me really emotional because it’s like what is going on in this young man life to cause him to be so careless and just give up. Also watching the first part yesterday I just found out about the private funded program at that school giving money to children for doing well in school. From what it seems it is working out great but I am not 100% on it. But I will be sure to watch the other parts too. It is a very eye opening discussion for the solutions to the problems no one wants to talk about.

Racism still exist, but I think we all know that most of our major problems are of our own making at this point. And I really don’t think you can put the blame on hip-hop that’s like a doctor prescribing cough syrup for a brain tumor. Rock stars have been performing worse acts of ignorance and debauchery than rappers for years, but that didn’t lead to the downfall of the white community. I think it all leads back to the family, until we start having strong family units our community is going to remain in a weakened state. And that’s not even saying a family needs a mother and a father I grew up with just my Mom, but she was tough and kept me in line.

Theres issuse that surround all ppl once we unite we would began to realize that color isnt a factor. SO until AMERICANs stop considerin themselves a title to a color “white” or “black” theres always goin to be division and complexities. I dont truly see the point on displaying African Americans lives on a TV SHOW as if were the only culture facin issues…..WE as AFRICAN AMERICANS NOT “BLACK” PPL, HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO EMbrace each other unconditionally first…..NO TELEVISION SHOW DISPLAYIN OUR ISSUES TO THE WORLD IS GOIN TO SOLVE ANYTHING…BUT…leadin more and more ppl to discuss and opionate on our lives. I am Kind of on the fence about the show.
I am interested to see the show, because I enjoy watching tv programs like that, it can be very insightful.
however in a way I am sick of people always doing documentaries about what it means to be “black in america” I mean it seems that we are the only race that gets investigated. Why isnt their ever a “mexican” in american or shit just straight up white in america? IMO no matter how many of these shows they have, if you arent black you will never COMPLETELY understand what it means to be black. I just wish people would stop trying to put a microscope up to us and trying to figure us out.

I understand the frustration you speak of as to why this show has to air now to discuss us black people. However I do want to point out that this was by no means the idea of a white man, this was the idea of a black woman, the president of Essence magazine. The primary reason why this show is airing is that in light of Obama, his journey to the nomination, America, particularly White America has been forced to rethink what it is that they thought it meant to be black. They have been forced to reevaluate their stereotyping of the black man and come to the very harsh reality that Black people are not some monolithic group of people with a singular way of thinking and acting. I think the timing is indeed right for us to bring these issues to the table.
I watched both the MLK special and the earlier show Reclaiming the dream and the point of the show is not the reintroduce black people to America but to remind the country and ourselves who we are, where we have come from and where we need to go as a community. The aim is to examine the community on a larger scale and come up with real life practical solutions that everyone can participate in to make the situation better.
I really appreciate what the Harvard economist Fryer said when he mentioned the fact that the mentality of kids today is so different from ours and from those of our parents. And one of the primary things we need to do is reorient our thinking so that we see education as synonymous with success which is really no longer the case.
The segment on HIV Aids absolutely broke my heart but I was glad to see Sheryl Lee passionate about it and about people getting tested and getting information.
I am really looking forward to these show, and for it to tell the whole spectrum of our stories. Hopefully we can come of watching it empowered and not overwhelmed with what to do because the truth is a lot of us want to make a difference but are often flooded with the vast problems that one can hardly know where to begin and how to efficiently make a difference.

What we been through and how we establish ourselves from bein a so called Blk PERSON aka NI*GGA, to an everyday AMERICAN trying to make it just like everybody esle. And Wow at the fact that it was a African that decided to air us out like that when we are already tryin not be spotlighted because mainly somebody and in the news and paper, theres always something to say about us. Africans livin in America are trying to live without the pity of what went down years ago and our skintone and the fact that we all know its always and will continue to be somebody out in this country especially, or world thats going to dismiss or try and call us out. I see now that all my ppl want now is to live dream acchieve and to be left alone from society and their microphone.
IF They REALLY WANNA SEE WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE BLACK. WALK UP to an African American..shake his or hand and ask:
How are you…and maybe establish a real friendship. Thats ACTUALLITY NOT REALLITY. To truly see us if you dont understand US is to know us.
Sittin in front of a TV and watchin a 4hr documentary on us doesnt even come 20% close of truly understanding our culture…and once that step is accomplished they might just recoqnize THATS BENEATH THE COLOR THAT GOD GAVE US WE ARE TRULY

@Warning: Opinionated
How black people went from the bottom to the top of what? What world are you living in? The greatest trick that was pulled on black people is convincing them that race is no longer an issue. This is why you have these black people claiming “it’s a class issue now, not a race issue”. You cannot conjure ONE STAT to corroborate your claims that black people have risen to the top of anything. You cannot conjure ONE STAT to corroborate your claims that black people are not still at the bottom. Not one. This trickery, based around perpetuating the nonsense spewed by MLK is what stops black people from having real discourse. Our people no longer acknowledge or respect order, discipline, and community. They’re too busy forcing themselves into the white man’s perceived sphere of influence. On top of the problems that our people already have, they want to take on the white man’s problems as well, i.e. the war and his economic collapse. Negro please.

Sorry Warning: Opinionated, but you are starting to sound like Geraldine Ferraro with those bizarre claims that black people have overcame and outdoing white people. If that was the case there would be no need for this series. Soledad as a woman of half Black descent( her mother is a black woman from Cuba) wants to dispel these stereotypes and plain tomfoolery that surround black people.
Plus, keep in mind that racism is big business, therefore its not black people that is acting like its all that matters. Racism is a serious money maker.

I felt that in the first segment of Sunday night program some members of the panel were very out of touch. Ed was sounding very PC and saying what people wanted to hear, he has a program called “Daddies Promises” he and Hill Harper both were extremely off point and were just regurgitating the things that people want to hear not what they really need to hear Hill was correct that men need to be taken to task but for a completely different reason . Why is that the black man have all the weight placed on his shoulders. There are tons support groups and organizations for women everywhere you turn there are programs to help women with everything from child support to raising children, even men’s groups have programs to help women and some of them don’t even have programs to help men and if they have programs they are sometimes belittling the black man. Why not speak about the black women that go to court and fight to keep their child from seeing the father because they don’t want their child support check to be reduced? Why not talk about the father who has gotten custody of his kids and the mother has ran off because she doesn’t want to pay child support or the young man in DC that has been raising his own daughter since he we 16 and working and going to school. I guess we’ve been handicapped by the old nursery rhyme “What are little boys made of? Snips and snails, and puppy-dogs’ tails, That’s what little boys are made of. What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice, and everything nice, That’s what little girls are made of.

If they make this a DVD i buying it…. that was a good documentary thanks to CNN…and its not even “black history month” another one is coming on tomorrow on CNN 8:00 central and 9:00 Eastern we’re always on here talking about which celebrity look “fab” and what boots are cute… we need to have talks about empowering ourselves and what we need to stop doing in order to get ahead in live as black people
