DVD RELEASES: ‘CITY OF MEN’ IN STORES NOW!

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

After completing the critically acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated 2002 feature CITY OF GOD and the critically acclaimed multi-part TV series, CITY OF MEN, filmmakers Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund are back with the DVD release ad ‘CITY OF MEN’, the full length movie.

‘CITY OF MEN’ MOVIE TRAILER

Continuing the stories from a notorious slum (or what they call a ‘favela’) in Brazil, the movie follows Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) and Acerola (Douglas Silva), two teens from Rio de Janeiro. With their eighteenth birthdays fast approaching, Laranjinha sets out to find the father he never met, while Acerola struggles to raise his own young son. But when they suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war, the lifelong friends are forced to confront a shocking secret from their shared past.

Just in case you are fan of ‘CITY OF GOD’ and haven’t viewed the ‘CITY OF MEN’ series, here is an FYI.. The characters and the story have zero to do with the movie City of God. City of God took place in the 1970s and City of Men takes place today. Although many of the actors were featured in the City of God movie, the storylines have nothing to do with each other. I’d recommend that you watch the TV show, which is available on DVD, before watching the movie. I’m a big fan of both movies and the ‘CITY OF MEN’ series and highly recommend everyone picking up all three of them for your DVD collection.

AAAND…even though this is not a good reason to like movies…there are some FINE men in City of God…like for real…people talk about Brazilian women? The men are just as gorgeous…

I didn’t know the TV series was available…I’ll be picking up that and the new movie. Thanks Angel!

city of god is the best film ever made imo.
the fact its foreign yet still relevant across the world speaks for itself.
city of men has nothing on city of god though I hope the film is better than the show

#11, I agree. City of God is my favorite move, period! #6, some of the best movies I’ve ever seen have subtitles. I love independent films. The IFC (independent film channel) plays it and other great movies all the time.

lmfao @ Angel.

Yeah.

My boyfriend has a thing about movie theatres & the fact I always fall asleep in them. So he refuses to take me anymore…any movie I mention I want to see…he runs to the barbershop & cops the bootleg for me…it’s cheaper & if I fall asleep I can always wake up & start from where I ended…and it only costs him 5 bucks.

So the dude he buys from had this movie awhile back & he copped it.

I enjoyed it…it’s a must see.

the book the movies and the tv series are the best peice of art you will ever read and see the movie changed my life really i’m obessed with other cultures after seeing it i highly recomened it city of god to me it up there with the godfather and scarface maybe even better

22.

Tuesday, July 1, 2008 /

i want to see it.

23.

vanity6

Tuesday, July 1, 2008 /

hmm #21, I think it’s way better than Scarface which is only a classic b/c of the rappers. i mean i love it for the early 80s disco scenes and a young michelle phifer getting coked out of her mind but-otherwise it’s not the best gangster flick…now Godfather, yes that was some excellent ass acting and story telling.

24.

politicallyincorrect

Tuesday, July 1, 2008 /

City of Men shows how Brazilians really live. It not all glamour of models, beaches and butt lifts. Poor black folks in America frontin’, talking about they buying designer shoes Rihanna had on, kids over there wearing flip flops

ooh #31, no i haven’t but i’m going to imdb it right now! thanx!….#24 Brazil is a HUGE country so you can’t say that’s how life is for everyone-everyone’s not broke even in the cities, don’t stereotype the whole country as a developing country ( a term I disklike but will use before the deragatory “3rd world”).

36.

hood_shit

Tuesday, July 1, 2008 /

37.

Tuesday, July 1, 2008 /

@ 36 not everyone in Brazil is broke but the majority fo them are (look it up)….Brazil is known that for a disportion of weath…the minority (the wealth) rule and do not take into account the majority (the poor)….also the majority of the wealthy are blond haired blue eyes (like I said look it up)

City of God was okay for me it happened to come on tv one night and nothing else was on and I watched it….it was sad

maybe I ‘ll watch this new one

shelby i don’t think most brazillians would appreciated their country being labeled as a poor, that’s all. and like i said ALL brazillians aren’t poor-that’s my only point, i’m not contesting that their poor people there. i saw some poor looking brazilians in bahia but i also saw a lot of working class looking brazillians in the streets and on the buses and the majority of them weren’t white.

oops i got more random ass comments.

@ #6…eww, who? lil z was oogly…so was everyone else. which one(s) you referring to as fine? i think someone mentioned knockout ned?! meh.

@ 16…i agree wholeheartedly. pastels?! pao de queijo?! shut up. lol

@ 35 i agree with you as well…the poverty gap in sao paulo (city) alone is craaaazy. i mean, favelas and mansions separated by only a highway and a dirty sewer.

@ 42 this is more than likely specific to bahia/NE brazil. in SP there were hardly any black people…except for the ones in the favelas (surprise)

one last one…thanks to everyone who gave the heads-up that city of men (series) is on sundance. i’ll be on the lookout!

great entry angel!
