DVD RELEASES: ‘CITY OF MEN’ IN STORES NOW!

After completing the critically acclaimed, Oscar®-nominated 2002 feature CITY OF GOD and the critically acclaimed multi-part TV series, CITY OF MEN, filmmakers Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund are back with the DVD release ad ‘CITY OF MEN’, the full length movie.

‘CITY OF MEN’ MOVIE TRAILER

Continuing the stories from a notorious slum (or what they call a ‘favela’) in Brazil, the movie follows Laranjinha (Darlan Cunha) and Acerola (Douglas Silva), two teens from Rio de Janeiro. With their eighteenth birthdays fast approaching, Laranjinha sets out to find the father he never met, while Acerola struggles to raise his own young son. But when they suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war, the lifelong friends are forced to confront a shocking secret from their shared past.

Just in case you are fan of ‘CITY OF GOD’ and haven’t viewed the ‘CITY OF MEN’ series, here is an FYI.. The characters and the story have zero to do with the movie City of God. City of God took place in the 1970s and City of Men takes place today. Although many of the actors were featured in the City of God movie, the storylines have nothing to do with each other. I’d recommend that you watch the TV show, which is available on DVD, before watching the movie. I’m a big fan of both movies and the ‘CITY OF MEN’ series and highly recommend everyone picking up all three of them for your DVD collection.

@21 City of God blows scarface out of the water. no comparison IMHO. but like Tabby, I couldn’t get into City of Men. I’m still gonna buy it though and give it a chance since I’ve already seen City of God at least 12 times lol

  2. danc3

im sorry but one of em is fine! lol other than that stated fact it does seem like a good movie. im into movies exploring other cultures & hardships ordinary ppl face instead of ones about a cracked out celebrity that doesnt deserve life

I saw City of God in my Humanities class. At first I was like dang, subtitles. But after getting into it, the movie turned out to be pretty good. As stated from someone earlier, some of those Brazillian men in the film were good looking. Check it out.

  6. Damn……them two with there shirts off looks like T.I, and Young Dro. :-)

  7. embark

    @ 64 Danc3

Naa each movie and the series are all different stories happening in the same city. The actors overlap but the stories dont.

oops i got more random ass comments.

@ #6…eww, who? lil z was oogly…so was everyone else. which one(s) you referring to as fine? i think someone mentioned knockout ned?! meh.

@ 16…i agree wholeheartedly. pastels?! pao de queijo?! shut up. lol

@ 35 i agree with you as well…the poverty gap in sao paulo (city) alone is craaaazy. i mean, favelas and mansions separated by only a highway and a dirty sewer.

@ 42 this is more than likely specific to bahia/NE brazil. in SP there were hardly any black people…except for the ones in the favelas (surprise)

one last one…thanks to everyone who gave the heads-up that city of men (series) is on sundance. i’ll be on the lookout!

    great entry angel!

  16. Heinz

  17. KaNisa

@ 75 Both Shaggy (from the beginning of the movie…don’t want to give away spoilers) and Benny (lil ze’s best friend) were cuties…they’re brothers in real life as well…

  18. La Maestra

@ 77 I have watched City of God several times just to see Shaggy’s and Benny’s dimples. O so sexy!! lol, and because its one of the greatest movies i’ve seen

City of God is an Excellent movie, especially if you like gangster movies. It’s actually on my favorite movies of all time. I hope City of Men stands up.

  22. ThatRealBlackGirl

If you have not seen City of God, please do. It is an amazing story. I usually can not follow sub titles either and I ususally chose not to watch movies that have sub titles, but once you start watching you’ll be locked and you won’t even realize you are actually watching the movie AND reading at the same time.

  23. Smarty

City of Men is a good flick, watched it @ the film festival over here in Philly…It’s not as much gun play as City of God…but eqaually good.
City of Men had a really dope twist to it regarding 2 boys who became best of friends over the years. Their past really comes into play with their future.

    City of God – Classik
City of Men – Classik 2

  24. British Spice

    @ 75 i fink 72 said that because they are Spanish…this aint skool…cor blimey!!loool

  25. awwwwww

City of God is one of the BEST films EVER made! And it’s about black people! Please run out and buy it if you’ve never seen it!
Thank you so much for shining some love on this movie and series! I was stuck on the Sundance channel when this show was running!

Oh and for those who don’t like sub-titles………… TRUST after the first 3 minutes of the movie you will not care…….One of the best opening scenes in a movie also! This movie is so deep and gangster at the same time!

  26. blakluv

I love the movie, the show, and I cannot wait to see this movie! They are excellent actors and you are missing out if you don’t watch them. I can’t get enough of them-they are awesome and sooo adorable.

Shout out to my peeps in Brazil. I live in Bahia half of the year. Yes Brazil does have a huge disparity in wealth. 10% upper class, 10% middle class and 80% poor and most of the poor are of African descent. But you would never know it by looking at them. Afro-Brazilians are the finest of all Brazilians – magnificent bodies. They are gorgeous. Sadly you don’t see too many of us patronizing the hotels. We work there but few black Brazilians can afford to actually patronize them. But they represent for Africa over there. They may be poor but to look at most of them you would never know it. They carry themselves with dignity and keep their appearance up. I have to give it up for my adopted country of Bahia, Brazil.

  28. ThatGirlLinda

This movie looks interesting I will have to check it out. I like foreign films. Thats sad that most black people in Brasil are poor. The country has more black people than US and its a shame. I guess its hard for black people in any country.

  29. whatever

    dang thoes boys look fine

  30. .:R-H:.

    Nice
I’ve been waiting for this movie to come out since the series ended

City of God is in my DVD player now
    really good movie
and the series was pretty good as well
    this movie looks real promising

  31. CaliHairDiva

City of God totally captivated me with both the story and the cinematography. It is truly one of the best movies that I have ever seen. It is such a powerful film. Glad CL put me up on City of Men. I can’t wait to see it.

  32. bkgurl

The movie City of God is great!! I saw it as soon as it came out (with subtitles). You can nextflix the series City of Men on television. It’s great to see how Blacks live in Brazil. It really show the poverty and lack of opportunies for them. This has been an ongoing problem in Brazil for decades. Trust me the movie is fabulous!

  33. Carioca

I had the opportunity to see the movies and the series….wonderful. I also had the opportunity to experience Brazil and get past the tourist veil that can easily blind people from the “Brazilian Reality”. Brazil is a beautiful country…just reminiscing about it is like nourishment to the soul…however, in spite of it physical beauty there are some harsh realities in regard to the way people live. There is alot of wealth disparities as a result of history. The wealth disparity is a result of corruption and ignorance. The wealthy despise the poor because the poor have a history of being violent and ignorant and the poor despise the rich because they have a history of being violent and ignorant. It’s a never ending cycle…45834958349 NGO’s and “rich kids” from Europe and the USA have been going to Brazil for years and volunteering their time to make things better…which is a great thing…but because of history its so hard to break the cycle when Brazil’s government doesn’t provide opportunity to enlighten their people through education…because education is not a priority there is little or no progress. This applies to all walks of life, not just to the people in Brazil. Also, poverty is not a “black thing” in Brazil…it comes in all shades…no color is exempt from this harsh reality in Brazil.

Brazil may be 100 years behind the U.S., as far as providing opportunity for all, but Brazil is 100 years ahead of the U.S. as far as “interracial social relationships” .

    “Tropa de Elite”….google it ;)

    That’s my piece*

  34. Crumbysmom

For those of you who love City of God check out Bus 174 a true story that shows street kids, poverty, violence and injustice in Rio.

I got a chance to study in Rio and I was so amazed. Like others said the most BEAUTIFUL citzens were the ones in the favelas and not on the beach. I mean BEAUTIFUL brothers and sistas! The sad part is that there is no affrimative action, no social programs, high discrimination, in your face racism and discrimination. We went to one university and there were hardly any Black students and the few that were there could only study certain subjects like teaching. No jobs, no opportunites. I saw a young boy one day holding a gun on the street. It breaks my heart. I saw a 3 year old and a 5 year old living on the street by themselves. And they look just like us. So imagine seeing your 3 year old nephew on the street while your 5 year old brother was high on glue so he could get rid of the hunger pains. ITS REAL down there. We don’t even understand poverty on that level. True injustice.

When people talk about getting rid of affrimative action I laugh. I say you want to see how our country would be. Look at Brazil. Thats where we would be.

One day I hope to go back and do some work. Its a beautiful place until you know the ugly side.

  35. li

okay not everyone in brazil is poor, but afro-brazilians mostly live in the slums, and claro brazilians (white) are the richer brazilians, but thats not true for all brazilians, you have to do your research, maybe crack open an anthropology book or something….my ex teacher lived in brazil for 5 years and its sad when the afro-brazilians are the ones living in the slums getting killed and etc. it may sound stereotypical but its true

  36. Steffen

He is quite a guy!!! He was said to have a personal account on a Luxury online service R I C H L O V I N G.C O M for successful and celebs singles with his hot pictures and blog there. Quite a few hot girls and ladies wrote to him. I’ve been there for day, it seems the girls are not hard to hook up.

  37. Sparkle

Yes Brazil is a racist country. It’s not a “racial democracy” like the white affluent Brazilians would have you believe. However, as I tell my Brazilian friends, black Americans still have a long way to go ourselves. America is still not the land of opportunity for black folks either. The reason why black poverty is so noticeable in Brazil is because you have 7 times the numbers of black folks in Brazil than you do the US. Black poverty is just more hidden in the States.

So many of them want to come to America because they think it’s a land of unbridled opportunity and wealth and I have to remind them that black people in America still have similar struggles. Racism and economic lack is still a major part of the lives of African Americans.

But I will give the Brazilians their props. In the midst of their situation they are very positive and optimistic and of course the most gorgeous people on the planet dwell in Rio, Salvador and Recife!!

After reading your post yesterday I ran to BlockBuster and purchased both films. My husband and I watched City of God last night (it was amazing) and will watch City of Men tonight. I already figured I wanted to own them in case I wanted to lend them to family/friends or show them. What a great movie, sheds light. Thanks CL and keep brining interested stuff like this instead of Adela’s ass LOL

  40. Nique

i had to watch City of God in college, it was nothing that has not been show before, just putting showing all the negativity that goes on over there,

  41. JAY

SOME OF THESE COMMENTS ARE INTERESTING…BUT SPARKLE MAKES SOME GOOD POINTS, IVE BEEN TO BRAZIL BOTH BAHIA AND RIO AND THE POVERTY IS THERE BUT ITS NOT REALLY A BLACK THING, DEPENDING ON HOW OR WHAT U DEFINE AS BLACK BUT…REALLY DONT BE FOOLED BY THESE MOVIES THE “FAVELAS” ARENT AS BAD AS THESE FILMS MAKE THEM OUT TO BE. THE STRUGGLES WE AFRICAN AMERICANS FACE IN THE GHETTO AND AFRO BRAZILIANS IS VERY SIMILIAR. YEA THERES VIOLENCE LIKE YOUD SEE IN EVERY GHETTO ALOT DUE TO TOURISM AND THE RICH/POOR GAP AND DISTANCE, HOWEVER ID SAY WHAT SHOCKED ME MOST WAS THE PROBLEMS WITH TOURISM, HOW YOU GET TREATED (EVENTHOUGH I TENDED TO BLEND IN) AND WHAT COMES WITH IT LIKE….STREET KIDS, DRUGS, PROSTITUTION (HEAVY IN BAHIA AND RIO), AND JUST OTHER CRAZY THINGS…BRAZIL IS DIFFERENT, BUT STILL VERY BEAUTIFUL PLACE DONT GET ME WRONG.
