Maybe I’m not cultured enough, but it’s hard for me to watch a movie with subtitles.

City of God is a must-see. It will absolutely draw you deep in and shock you at the same time. Great film!
I haven’t seen the follow up though…

I recommend that ya’ll check these joints out. The movie was off the chain. Kids with guns taking over the hood in rio and they are more gansta than anyone I ever seen. Rent them , buy them. see them.

My boyfriend has a thing about movie theatres & the fact I always fall asleep in them. So he refuses to take me anymore…any movie I mention I want to see…he runs to the barbershop & cops the bootleg for me…it’s cheaper & if I fall asleep I can always wake up & start from where I ended…and it only costs him 5 bucks.

So the dude he buys from had this movie awhile back & he copped it.

I saw City of God in one of my college classes last year and it is a must see…It’s alittle graphic but good…I have to see this new one!

the book the movies and the tv series are the best peice of art you will ever read and see the movie changed my life really i’m obessed with other cultures after seeing it i highly recomened it city of god to me it up there with the godfather and scarface maybe even better

hmm #21, I think it’s way better than Scarface which is only a classic b/c of the rappers. i mean i love it for the early 80s disco scenes and a young michelle phifer getting coked out of her mind but-otherwise it’s not the best gangster flick…now Godfather, yes that was some excellent ass acting and story telling.

City of Men shows how Brazilians really live. It not all glamour of models, beaches and butt lifts. Poor black folks in America frontin’, talking about they buying designer shoes Rihanna had on, kids over there wearing flip flops

City of God is a must see…City of Men was a great series. I wish the Sundance Channel kept it on past 2 or 3 seasons. I will be buying all 3 of these DVDs.

@ 36 not everyone in Brazil is broke but the majority fo them are (look it up)….Brazil is known that for a disportion of weath…the minority (the wealth) rule and do not take into account the majority (the poor)….also the majority of the wealthy are blond haired blue eyes (like I said look it up)

Wow never realised it was much of a big deal for it to be mentioned in the U.S. I live in London and they have been showing this on BBC 2 late though like 2am on saturdays and I watched one episode and thought it was good enough to sky plus the rest of the episodes.

yeah man-city of god is a classic and will pick up city of men. another great movie w/ subtitles-y tu mama tambien and motorcycle diaries-a must see!! right now-iam watching the wire which is really good. im on season 3-pacing myself b/c $50 a season is not cheap. i know iam late but dont have hbo-haitian body odor

I saw City of God in my Humanities class. At first I was like dang, subtitles. But after getting into it, the movie turned out to be pretty good. As stated from someone earlier, some of those Brazillian men in the film were good looking. Check it out.

Naa each movie and the series are all different stories happening in the same city. The actors overlap but the stories dont.

city of god is a must c…u dnt have to be culutural to see it..it jus shows you that otha african americans go through similar or worse situations in other countries..n once u get into the movie u won’t care about the subtitles..jus b open minded

City of God is an Excellent movie, especially if you like gangster movies. It’s actually on my favorite movies of all time. I hope City of Men stands up.

If you have not seen City of God, please do. It is an amazing story. I usually can not follow sub titles either and I ususally chose not to watch movies that have sub titles, but once you start watching you’ll be locked and you won’t even realize you are actually watching the movie AND reading at the same time.

City of Men is a good flick, watched it @ the film festival over here in Philly…It’s not as much gun play as City of God…but eqaually good.
City of Men had a really dope twist to it regarding 2 boys who became best of friends over the years. Their past really comes into play with their future.

Shout out to my peeps in Brazil. I live in Bahia half of the year. Yes Brazil does have a huge disparity in wealth. 10% upper class, 10% middle class and 80% poor and most of the poor are of African descent. But you would never know it by looking at them. Afro-Brazilians are the finest of all Brazilians - magnificent bodies. They are gorgeous. Sadly you don’t see too many of us patronizing the hotels. We work there but few black Brazilians can afford to actually patronize them. But they represent for Africa over there. They may be poor but to look at most of them you would never know it. They carry themselves with dignity and keep their appearance up. I have to give it up for my adopted country of Bahia, Brazil.

This movie looks interesting I will have to check it out. I like foreign films. Thats sad that most black people in Brasil are poor. The country has more black people than US and its a shame. I guess its hard for black people in any country.

City of God totally captivated me with both the story and the cinematography. It is truly one of the best movies that I have ever seen. It is such a powerful film. Glad CL put me up on City of Men. I can’t wait to see it.

The movie City of God is great!! I saw it as soon as it came out (with subtitles). You can nextflix the series City of Men on television. It’s great to see how Blacks live in Brazil. It really show the poverty and lack of opportunies for them. This has been an ongoing problem in Brazil for decades. Trust me the movie is fabulous!

I had the opportunity to see the movies and the series….wonderful. I also had the opportunity to experience Brazil and get past the tourist veil that can easily blind people from the “Brazilian Reality”. Brazil is a beautiful country…just reminiscing about it is like nourishment to the soul…however, in spite of it physical beauty there are some harsh realities in regard to the way people live. There is alot of wealth disparities as a result of history. The wealth disparity is a result of corruption and ignorance. The wealthy despise the poor because the poor have a history of being violent and ignorant and the poor despise the rich because they have a history of being violent and ignorant. It’s a never ending cycle…45834958349 NGO’s and “rich kids” from Europe and the USA have been going to Brazil for years and volunteering their time to make things better…which is a great thing…but because of history its so hard to break the cycle when Brazil’s government doesn’t provide opportunity to enlighten their people through education…because education is not a priority there is little or no progress. This applies to all walks of life, not just to the people in Brazil. Also, poverty is not a “black thing” in Brazil…it comes in all shades…no color is exempt from this harsh reality in Brazil.

Brazil may be 100 years behind the U.S., as far as providing opportunity for all, but Brazil is 100 years ahead of the U.S. as far as “interracial social relationships” .

For those of you who love City of God check out Bus 174 a true story that shows street kids, poverty, violence and injustice in Rio.

I got a chance to study in Rio and I was so amazed. Like others said the most BEAUTIFUL citzens were the ones in the favelas and not on the beach. I mean BEAUTIFUL brothers and sistas! The sad part is that there is no affrimative action, no social programs, high discrimination, in your face racism and discrimination. We went to one university and there were hardly any Black students and the few that were there could only study certain subjects like teaching. No jobs, no opportunites. I saw a young boy one day holding a gun on the street. It breaks my heart. I saw a 3 year old and a 5 year old living on the street by themselves. And they look just like us. So imagine seeing your 3 year old nephew on the street while your 5 year old brother was high on glue so he could get rid of the hunger pains. ITS REAL down there. We don’t even understand poverty on that level. True injustice.

When people talk about getting rid of affrimative action I laugh. I say you want to see how our country would be. Look at Brazil. Thats where we would be.

One day I hope to go back and do some work. Its a beautiful place until you know the ugly side.

okay not everyone in brazil is poor, but afro-brazilians mostly live in the slums, and claro brazilians (white) are the richer brazilians, but thats not true for all brazilians, you have to do your research, maybe crack open an anthropology book or something….my ex teacher lived in brazil for 5 years and its sad when the afro-brazilians are the ones living in the slums getting killed and etc. it may sound stereotypical but its true

Yes Brazil is a racist country. It’s not a “racial democracy” like the white affluent Brazilians would have you believe. However, as I tell my Brazilian friends, black Americans still have a long way to go ourselves. America is still not the land of opportunity for black folks either. The reason why black poverty is so noticeable in Brazil is because you have 7 times the numbers of black folks in Brazil than you do the US. Black poverty is just more hidden in the States.

So many of them want to come to America because they think it’s a land of unbridled opportunity and wealth and I have to remind them that black people in America still have similar struggles. Racism and economic lack is still a major part of the lives of African Americans.

But I will give the Brazilians their props. In the midst of their situation they are very positive and optimistic and of course the most gorgeous people on the planet dwell in Rio, Salvador and Recife!!

After reading your post yesterday I ran to BlockBuster and purchased both films. My husband and I watched City of God last night (it was amazing) and will watch City of Men tonight. I already figured I wanted to own them in case I wanted to lend them to family/friends or show them. What a great movie, sheds light.
