I had the pleasure of seeing Janelle last August at the New Era Flagship Store Opening in Atlanta and she is such a kind and sweet person and I truly wish her the best. Kid Sister is a little innovator and I like how she’s tryna be apart of the whole Neon and Beeper phase that the underground is goin through right now. Janelle and Kid Sister are like Ashanti and RiRi…. products of hype machines. I think Janelle has talent BUT they are promoting her image more than her actual material. Not a good look in my eyes (aka a potential buyer). STILL… Janelle kinda earns her spot because she’s bringing something old w/ her twist to the table and that’s always good. Kid Sister is cute BUT that “Pro Nails” song was wack from day one. Someone who appreciates music would understand that. I think they should have put J*DaVeY and/or Santogold on the cover instead of Kid Sister.

We need to see more and different varieties, so that we can show our little girls that they are beautiful too and don’t have to look the same as the latest celebrity that gets plastered all over the place. This is only one small way to show our love to them.

The Janelle monae girl reminds me of Grace jones. I am 34 and I remember Grace getting torn down for her hairstyles. In reading all these comments I went to listen to her music and read a few interviews. I actually like her. She has a picture with Anita Baker and they resemble too.
Kid sister is ok, her music is too trendy for me. I am looking for something that is REALLY going to push limits. So far the monae girl is really pushing it for me…

I am an artist and marketing manager and branding is very important. Just because we may know about these artists doesn’t mean the 30 billion other people do. I think it’s important to make sure you put out what you want people to remember you for first. Have they performed on the awards, any tv shows, any albums? People NEED to remember them some way and be able to seperate them from all the other female artists out. Janelle monae just needs to make sure she is thinkin about her next look. If you are tired of person’s signature look, move on. It’s not for you. there are new people who will find it cool I’m sure.
