♫ Janelle Monáe - Many Moons
Janelle Monáe is gearing up to release of her debut album, Metropolis. Here is the new single for the release, “Many Moons,” produced by Nate Wonder, Chuck Lightning & Janelle Monáe, for which she just shot a video for this a couple of weeks ago in Los Angeles.
Janelle’s new EP drops August 12, and the whole entire Bad Boy and Atlantic families, who have partnered with The Wondaland Arts Society to bring you Janelle’s latest project, are absolutely stoked about the new project. “Many Moons” is a darker, scarier look into the world of Metropolis, but still with that classic fun that fans have learned to love from Janelle’s music. Look out for more music from Miss Monáe, and be sure to pick up the EP on August 12.
And in the mean time, while we wait for the video, check out this footage of Janelle Monáe rocking out at Afropunk in Brooklyn!
You should definitely show some love to Miss Monáe by hitting her up on her MySpace page!

You may not like her music, but dang at least give the girl points for creativity and doing the music that’s in her heart! It takes courage and conviction.
At least she didn’t sell herself out for a beat, some quick cash, and crossover appeal like many artists out there. Sometimes we act like their ain’t no room in the music game unless you got Lil’ Wayne rapping on your sh*t or Scott Storch layin’ the track.

Girl can sing but I’m not feeling it. I agree she’s bring something somewhat different to game vs. other R&B artists today (I said somewhat because there are some that are actually NOT on the radio doing big things). I hope her album continues the push the envelope BUT I wish they would change up her outfits. Seriously… its coming off as a gimmick and not “her.”

YES!!! Finally she released this song!! She is one of the DOPEST girls out know.
I just saw her at Afro-Punk in Brooklyn and my jaw was dropped in amazement. She did a ballad directly after performing this fast song and killed it
Stay you janelle!

At #14
Gimmick? I would have to disagree homie. The whole industry is a gimmick then. Justt cause she wears her clothes a very specific way does not make her “not real”.
She is an artist and I got that when I saw her interviews and saw her perform. To weart something you have to like it right? Let her wear what she likes.
Some people have curly long weave and heels and some have short black hair and call their album, “Good girl turned bad”. Janelle monae has her black and white and natural hair. She is just a real as any other chick in my opinion

At #14 again,
Do you know “her” and ” are you her?” I meant to add that in my statement before.
Sorry to come off so hard about this cause I have never met janelle before and probably might not.lol, but I am an artist and I hate when people call somebody a gimmick because they ain’t giving you the normal.

I really dig this chick.
She’s going to sell … a LOT of albums, obtain a lot of awards, change a lot of things –mark my words. Because she understands the purpose and intention of music, which is meant to inspire …. to bring you, the listener, into the mind and world of the artist. And she is definitely imaginative and creative.
The only setback I see for her is that some people will criticize her because they don’t have time for imagination. Her whole thing is “Imagination Inspires Nations” … but she’s never told us ‘how’?? How does imagination inspire nations? How will imagination help us get out of all of the problems that we’re in? What will imagine do for me when I can’t pay my bills, or I just broke up with my boyfriend, or I’m in depression … some people live in reality, and can’t afford to imagine.
But we’ll see.

Oh, and about the song lol …
I wish she put out “Violent Stars, Happy Hunting!” as her first single, but this one is nice. Her voice is so refreshing, marvelous! So … old school, but not really … modern and unique, just like her style.
However, I don’t understand the listing of various negative things towards the end, other than it sounds cool.

I understand the whole Mr. Carver & peanuts thing. So great comeback.
But what I was moreso getting at is …. what do you think her music is going to do to inspire nations? How is her imagination going to inspire you, the listener?
I’m now knocking her music, I think it’s amazing. I just want to see the change in the people who were yearning for it.

#49-I read you two’s argument and it seems like that is up to you to find out… Maybe you should use your imagination and figure it out. It’s kinda like Barack Obama when he says “Change”. He can not literally make you “change” or anything “change” without you, the people, doing something for yourself. Be more creative. Figure out a different way of approaching life, music, and your way of thinking. Don’t be so conventional. Don’t continue to not help promote diversity or knock it when it is coming full force in our culture… especially in black music.
I want music to be more fun! and see more creative live shows! I get that from Ms. Monae. Sorry!
And yes, I am a Janelle Monae supporter! I love Concrete Loop too!!! Thanks Brian for posting this!

Here we go..#51 I got ur reply to my comment, as soon as I posted it I regreted it because I knew the Bey or RIh cult would be offended. My comment simply meant a change is needed in the industry, we don’t need anymore mini me’s of the two women. Say what you want but Rihanna is talented and NOT trying to be Bey. I believe both women have staying power in the indutrsy so something else is needed.
On another note ladies and gents STOP getting so sensitive when someone posts THEIR OPINION! Are Bey and Rhi cutting yall checks cause I swear some of yall act like yall on their payroll!

This song is old for those of us (namely, me) that has been with Janelle since the release of Suite I. This version sounds a bit more shopped. I dunno whether its the track itself or the way it was uploaded but it seems to have a new reverb effect going on before the bridge. I have ALWAYS LOVED this song and have thought it was so DOPE and the lyrics are just laden with the perspective of the world.
I cannot wait to see her video for this as many of us have been waiting AGES for some music visual representation of her works. More power to Janelle and she deserves all the attention she will most definately receive. I’m and I missed her at Afropunk as I was in the area at the time and just could get down to BK fast enough.

@ #70 they did change the song a little. I like this version better IMO, its more intense for a lack of a better word. This is the verions on Suite I. The original is on her myspace.
I love Janelle and Im so glad she chose this song as her single. It’s my favorite on the cd. She’s so refreshing, this is what the industry needs. A lot of you people have been brainwashed into wanting to hear the same monotonous repetitive music, and when something new comes your way that not only will enlighten you but entertain you and take you on a journey you fear it because it’s different.
She is on another level. A creative genuis with so much she wants to share through her music. She’s a true artist, and she won’t comform to the industry’s standards, that is why I respect her so much. Look up one of her interviews on youtube. She’ll blow you away.

BadBoy knew what they were doing when they partnered up with the Wondaland Arts Society, and I’ve never been THIS excited about black music.
GO GET ‘EM JANE!!!!!! Continue to inspire your fans and even the “non-believers”. You’re changing the world whether people see it or not.

I LOVE Janelle Monae…she’s so talented and she represents all the black girls like me who don’t quite fit in anywhere…SMH at the people talking about her hair…which as actually AWESOME. People need to be more open-minded.
Anyway, I think she has a great career ahead of her, and I’m actually going to the store for this one LMAO…

Me too!! At her shows, I definitely do catch something like the Holy Ghost! I don’t know what it is, and I certainly can’t help it. JM’s music wakes up the soul!
It sets you free!
I’ve been a strong supporter since “Letting Go” and all the music from Idlewild soundtrack. Peachtree Blues is awesome too! Wow, I’ve been waiting SO LONG for an official video. Man just thinking back to when she tried to do an independent one for “VSHH” down in ATL a yr ago…
Although I’ve had Suite I since it was released last summer, and have played it out, it’ll never get old. The music is timeless. I’ll be listening to this for years to come.
This is one artist I’m supporting through thick and thin.
I’m hooked!

The reason why you want to peel off all your clothes and pull out your hair is because this chic is using witchcraft in her music. She is obviously bugged out of her damn mind. You can look at her picture and see that she is spaced the hell out. I love this. And I’m inspired by Janelle Monae.
#115, I think you’re honestly just trying to put Miss Monae in a box and she’s refusing it and that makes you think that you should call her names. Childish.
The shoes she’s wearing are saddle oxfords.
She’s a very intellegent young lady apparently and you can tell this from her interviews. She’s not at all “weird” though she may in fact be abnormal. But stars are abnormal — if they weren’t, then they’d be just like you sitting at work, writing on blogs.
you should check out some of her interviews though, to get a better grasp on what’s happening all around you. don’t get left behind!

People are so crazy sometimes. Let’s stop equating weird with different, innovative, real, etc.
She’s gained all this attention and has done with her clothes ON.
She’s never had her ass out, never. Stop reaching for hate…
And I don’t think she’s on the wrong label, what’s the “right” label.
Lets be real, Puffy Diddy Sean, (whatever), gives all his acts a chance. It’s on the artist to make it happen. He’ll give you 2 singles, a video, tv appearances, press, etc. He can’t buy the albums.
All JM needs is half the push he normally gives and she’s outta here!

@ 111 JUDAH
I think they do not know what the term “Holy Ghost” really means because if they did, they would have NEVER used it in expressing themselves. Honestly, I don’t think they are “actively” in church and learning the word because if they were, they would have definitely chosen different terminology.
Unfortunately many people confuse the “Holy Ghost” for a physical action in jumping up and down and acting bizarre instead of a real, actual encounter with the presence of the God’s spirit. So forgive them, they know not what they do.

I wasn’t feeling the song at first listen. Then something made me play it again, then again and again. Then, I went to Youtube and found more of her music (Sincerely Jane is sick!). She is phenomenal! SHE ACTUALLY USES REAL INSTRUMENTS IN HER SONGS! In “Sincerely Jane” I heard the french horn, string instruments…hell, I heard a damn TUBA! The woman can sing, preform and entertain! Diddy knew what he was doing when he approached her and asked her TO PARTNER with his label. SHE IS THE ONLY WOMAN ON HIS LABEL THAT HAS AN IMAGINATION AND THE LUNGS TO BELT OUT A GOOD SONG. Not to be too rude, but Cassie is not where it’s at and Diddy knows that! THERE IS A RENAISSANCE GOING ON IN ATLANTA, just like the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s. WAKE UP PEOPLE! JANELLE MONAE IS APART OF IT!

@ 121 JUDAH I’m convinced you are psycho…”witchcraft” are you serious?? You clearly dont understand her music at all. She’s actually touching on a lot of messages namely; LOVE, race, racism, black youth, war, drugs, violence, freedom, captivity (enslavement), creativity, conformity. You are so close minded it’s not even funny. You’re the one who was talking about that Nelson Mandela crap.
She’s only using the alien space theme as a metaphor, sort of a backdrop for the message she’s trying to convery. Lupe Fiasco uses the same method in his music. They can’t be blatantly say what they’re talking about or some people will think it’s coming off as “preachy” and automatically turn off, which btw is a word they both use in interviews to describe it. And they both actually have similiar messages, Lupe’s is geared more towards the hip hop community. Im not going to get too deep into an explanation becuase there are so many layers to her music that it would be an injustice to her.

The production is riduculous as well - her and her team at Wondaland are creative genuises. On top of that she’s an entertainer - she’s going to put on a SHOW! You’re going to enjoy it and wanna dance…her hair - fly! Natural with high fashion flare..(reference Vogue magazine spreads…sheesh) and her style unmatched - she’s a breath of fresh air and I wish people would be more open minded and get into it! Black people! this is really sad.
#146 you are arguing over her hair and outfit? You just can’t be a cool music lover. You think that the focus should be on this girl’s hair and fit first and then you want to pay attention to the music? How ignorant do you wound. It should always be about the music first. That’s what’s wrong with society and the entertainment business now, too worried about somebody’s weave, purse, shoes, and who they fucking.
this is a gossip column so I guess I can’t preach too much. .. I am heavily into fashion Chanel, Yves Saint, etc. and I actually like her fashion sense. It’s never been done, especially by a black female. It’s not giving too much and she is a new artist right? Let her grow

Been down with Janelle since Big Boi introduced her on Purple Ribbon. Anyone that’s been down with her since then or before knows that she’s the truth and no gimmick. Venture over to Youtube and watch the countless videos of her performin and interviews. She is cemented in her conviction to express her creativity and imagination unapologetically without compromise. Personally, I think she is about to blow, much in the same way Kast did. We’ll see. Either way I’m happy for her and will support regardless. And Puffy has nothing to do whatsoever witht the creation of the music. All the music was done before she even inked the deal with Puff.
And @ Tessa, I say this with a lil reluctance because using this word has become a lil cliche because it’s tossed around so much but…you sound like a hater. First, you aint never seen Ms. Janelle Monae with her ass and titties hangin out. If you’ve ever seen her speak you would know that that would go against everythings she stands for and that would make her a hypocrit of epic proportions. Second, nothing is completely original. However, what Janelle is doing is about as close as you gone get. Take off the blinders for a just a sec and maybe you’ll be able to appreciate what she is trying to do.
