Lena Baker (1901-1945) was a maid and the only woman ever put to death in Georgia’s electric chair.
Baker was born to a poor family of sharecroppers, and as a child, she and her family chopped cotton for a farmer named J.A. Cox. At the age of 20, she and a friend decided to make money by entertaining gentlemen. Their clientele were white, and since interracial relationships were illegal at that time, this sparked attention from the Randolph County sheriff. While prostitution was illegal, the authorities would have likely ignored it had Baker’s clients been exclusively black. She and her friend were arrested and spent several months in a workhouse. Upon release, Baker was ostracized by the community, which lead her to become an alcoholic.

♫ Trey Songz - In Ya Phone (full) - listen
Here’s is the self-proclaimed Prince of Virginia’s new single, “In Ya Phone,” from his upcoming third LP. I was a fan of Trey’s first two albums, for different reasons. I don’t know, I’m a little on the fence about this new single. Trey is in Atlanta working on his third project, so I’m hoping that some good work comes out for him, ’cause I’m not in love with this new song.
♫ Sean Garrett feat. Rick Ross - 6 In the Morning (Remix) (full) - listen
Why is Sean Garrett cursing so much at the beginning of this song? Whatever. Apparently, “6 In the Morning” is Sean’s new single from his album, Turbo 919, which has been pushed back God knows how many times. I don’t know what they’re going to do to release this album, considering that it leaked so long ago - and all the material is floating all over the internet. I knew that this was gonna happen when he dropped that “Grippin’” single. Some people are just best behind the scenes…

Senator Barack Obama after the Democratic Caucus meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, July 29, 2008.
A recent Gallup Poll shows Sen. Barack Obama leading Sen. John McCain 49-40 percent of national registered voters. The margin is the largest for Obama over McCain since Gallup began tracking the general election in March.
The AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in the United States, is launching a major effort in order to further dispel ongoing rumors surrounding the Democratic presidential candidate. The organization is set to send mailers to more than 600,000 union homes in battleground states such as Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The mailers will allow union members to “meet Obama” and better understand where he stands on issues such as job creation, health care reform and worker’s rights.
A majority of AFL-CIO’s membership is considered part of the working-class demographic, a key voting bloc that supported Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and is likely to play a huge role in November’s election.
