POLITICAL ROUNDUP: OBAMA AN OREO? / OBAMA AT NAACP CONVENTION / MCCAIN IS OLD AND OBAMA AN OUTSIDER
Wednesday, July 16, 2008
While discussing recent comments made by Jesse Jackson about Sen. Barack Obama last weekend, The McLaughlin Group host John McLaughlin said:
“Question: Does it frost Jackson, Jesse Jackson, that someone like Obama, who fits the stereotype blacks once labeled as an Oreo — a black on the outside, a white on the inside — that an Oreo should be the beneficiary of the long civil rights struggle which Jesse Jackson spent his lifetime fighting for?”
Michelle Bernard, a panelist on the program and the president of the Independent Women’s Forum said she disagreed with the comments, saying “If Barack Obama is an Oreo, then every member of this generation of African-Americans is an Oreo, because we stand on the shoulders of the people who fought for our rights, and all of us say that you cannot blame ‘the man’ or white racism for everything that ails the black community.”
CNN contributor Roland Martin says some are overreacting to McLaughlin’s remark.
“Obama’s candidacy is bringing to light to the internal conversation that is taking place in black America and white America. I think a lot of people are uncomfortable with the dialogue,” he said. “If John McLaughlin was an African American and who had made the comment, people would have said, well, he probably understands what he’s talking about.”
“The reality is we also have a white, his mother is white and his dad is from Kenya,” Martin also said. “I think that is the qualifier there and this is a debate that you have heard take place inside of the black community that you also have people who question someone like Obama, where does he stand? Is he black enough?”
OBAMA AT NAACP CONVENTION
Speaking to the NAACP on Monday, Sen. Barack Obama urged blacks to take more responsibility for improving their lives. His speech touched on recognizing the role and responsibility of fathers he mentioned last month on Father’s Day.
Last week, Jesse Jackson accused him of “talking down to blacks” and Obama said, “Now, I know there’s some who’ve been saying I’ve been too tough, talking about responsibility. I’m here to report, I’m not going to stop talking about it.”
MCCAIN IS OLD AND OBAMA AN OUTSIDER
A recent AP/Yahoo poll found that 19 percent of Americans thought first of “old” as a response to presidential candidate John McCain. Twenty percent picked “change” or “outsider” for Barack Obama.
According to communications professor Leonard Steinhorn, “McCain is old, but he wants to come off youthful and fears coming off outdated. Obama is young, he wants to come off as wise, and he fears coming off as naive.”
Recent Rasmussen Reports show Obama leading McCain 44-40.

I reeeeaaally dont think Barak fits the stereotype of an Oreo, in my opinion an “Oreo” is a person who is black, but doesnt identify or want to be associated with their black culture. I think Barack is very much in touch with his black heritage, he married a black woman for christ sake and thats is more than what some who the media doesnt consider “Oreo’s” have done… but thats a whole other story.

Exactly! What Ive always known to be an Oreo is a black person who embraces white culture only. Someone who shies away from black culture, and Ive even known a few people who did everything but come out and say they wish they were white, listening to the music, dating the women, dressing a certain way yada yada. Obama is NOT what blacks would consider an oreo. He married a black woman attended black churches etc… I think Mr. McLaughlin is under the impression that Black people think an educated, well spoken, affluent African American is an Oreo and that is not the case. That beleif shows that Mr. McLaughlin doesnt know what he’s talking about and should have kept his mouth shut on the topic or at least educated himself better before using the term. This just speaks to the fact that white people in America view intelligent black people as rare so sad.

I am severley appalled at this vid. John Mc, has an audacity of call Obama an Oreo. it hurts me because i feel people use that term ( blacks particularly) when they feel threatened by other blacks who dont want to be part of the stereotypes of being non educated unruly baby making machines. I was labeled as an oreo in school, and it didn’t help that I am light skinned either. It’s crazy because Obama identifies himself as being birarcial, he’s never denied it, so myself as a balck woman don’t see anything wrong for him acknowledging both groups of people, because that is who he represents. This is very disturbing but only justifies one thing, people are truly very scared of Obama and the magnitude of his power. Whites are scrambling and shakign their head and some blacks are using their jealousy and despise when they see someone doing better than them, to hate on Obama. All i can say is if Obama and myself are labeled as Oreo’s because we want to stand for a greater cause in this world, be OVERLY educated then our peers, strive for excellence and honor, then just settle being a balck stereotype because thats what makes SOME PEOPLE COMFORTABLE, then soooo beee it! I’d take the high road anyday then the bottom one thats all ready full with section 8 debutants and crackhead drop outs. And What!?!? Play with me! VickieD!

Why debate whether Barak is an Oreo or not? There are plent of other issues that could be addressed regaridng the policies that Obama and McCain support and also where the conuntry will be over the next four years. The media is having a field YEAR w/ this election. Not a day …a YEAR … Obama supporters need to be prepared for more outlandsih statements and accusations as the elction nears. We haev not seen the worst yet. Censorship is a joke these days, people are saying anything because they are nervous of the inevitable …..
@ Greg_Arious - I think you are correct in what McLaughlin thinks Black people feel an OREO is or can be defined as.

Roland Martin is the real idiot. Mclaughlin was not debating Obama’s racial background at all, he was speaking on “Oreoism” as a social construct. Giving that word/statement a pass because Obama has a white mother is irresponsible. The term Oreo is as offensive and outdated as mulatto. It’s a childish word that black kids were tormented with in the early 90s for being smart or some other stereotype wrongly attributed to white children. We as black people have been trying very hard to break down the negativty associated with being smart/articulate and clearly calling someone an oreo is counterproductive. Now that I think about it, I haven’t even heard anyone in the hood debate Obama’s blackness in like 6-7months, and when it was debated the word Oreo was never used.

I II want Jesse Jackson to go sit down somewhere and shut the hell up! He is a HATER………….. He is only mad because Obama made it further and is doing well in this election. Now I see why! I wouldn’t want a president with that type of attitude leading me. I mean for him to make that comment shows his immaturity and lack of respect for his brothers and sisters. I was offended for Obama! I pray that when he becomes president that he doesn’t help Jesse with anything! You never bite that hand that feeds you. I know that he’s going to need Obama for something in the future. But how you going to throw stones at a glass house when you had a child out of wedlock, lets talk about how you can’t seem to keep your member under wraps mister! First off, the man using the term is not offensive. Calm down folks, he’s not calling Obama oreo, he presenting a hypothetical theory using the word and giving it’s definition. I agree with Roland Martin, he’s just explaining a race issue as a white man, and that is unusual to us…
anyway…to Mr. Obama (who I’m a strong supporter of) I definitely agree with him on the state of black families BUT I see where Jesse Jackson is coming from too!
Yes, black men need to be responsible, but the issue is deeper than “ok black man, grow up and raise your family!” It’s not that simple, and Obama knows this. He needs to acknowledge how systemic institutionalized racism and prejudice has kept black men out of the work place for years, how black men are unequally incarcerated, etc etc.
If a black man doesn’t have another black man, to show him how to be a real black man, how can he be a black man? (I didn’t add the word responsible because to me that signifies that without adding the word there is something already wrong with the term “black man”, that it needs something added to make it a positive phrase,)
This all is a part of the break down of black men in the home, and we could talk about this ad nauseum, there are MANY factors that contribute to this disparity.
I agree that it does come off a little elitist and like he’s casting shadow over black men a when he makes statements like he’s made about fathers and then ends it with, and I quote “nowhere is that more true than in the African American community.”
My point is you can’t talk about one without the other, yes BLACK MEN BE RESPONSIBLE, BE IN THE HOME! But we also understand what you face today, and the history our forefathers had to face.
Pretty much, black folk, WE NEED GOD! lol

The way I look at it is this…..if the Republicans and trying to sway Democrats (white loving democrats….can’t see my daughter with a black man or my son with a black woman or self loathing black people…..if he was a real man he would have 6 kids out of wedlock, 8 baby mamas, selling drugs on the street and beating his women) then this tactic may work. For any intelligent human being that actually looks at his track record and listen to what he says; this will not sway him. Obama is not about race he is about change and to me seeing the same old a$$ white man in office is not change. They fear Obama as they feared King and X because these men were leaders and were intelligent.
If anything the Republicans have been fighting very dirty and they are only going to do that with an opponent they are truly scared of. So for all you Republicans that want to back a party that believe in slandering a canidate instead of running a fair race..vote for McCain. But if you are angered by the way the Republican Party is sand throwing and don’t want to vote Democrat; please don’t throw your vote away by not using it…for now more than ever every vote counts
Lastly, If the only thing of substance they can attack Obama with is an alledged affair with a white woman, a white preacher (that was a guest at his church that preaches the same way every black preacher preaches on Sunday) and the fact that he may be an “oreo” then they have more than solidified my vote for Obama come November.
Thank you

—This would be a NON-ISSUE if Obama would speak about civil rights and
—–equality……when he speaks about social and moral responsibility. “The Man”
—–don’t get no free pass, just because a black man becomes the nominee. They
—–still need to be reminded to hire a brother every now and then. They still need to
——be reminded to look past the black skin and see the person. They still need to
——be reminded that a disproportionate number of brothers are rotting in prison,
——because of a legal system that concentrates on black crimes. So yes, Obama
——is right to point out the need for black fathers to step up, but he also needs to
——remind “the Man” and the society that the social injustices, stereotypes, and
——negative forces are still at work.
——Sometimes, when people on these grand stages, get these capivated
——audience, the problem is not that they say too much, but rather they say too
——little! Obama should continue to tell the truth, but he should tell the WHOLE
——truth!
——I’m sure in the wee-wee hour of the night, Michelle will remind him of his black
——ass! That’s why, I’m casting my vote for Michelle “Angela Davis” Obama-X!

STOP DISRESPECTING JESSE!
No the man is not perfect, he’s made some mistakes, said some DUMB things but he’s HUMAN just like YOU and ME.
Had it not been for Jesse, who knows if an Obama would even be possible? He certainly paved the way and fought during the Civil Rights Movement, and still does today. There are many civil rights causes we know about because of this man, there have been few modern day people really going to the hilt publicly for the rights of black people like Jesse Jackson.
So it’s easy for him to be a target, because he’s out in front, nobody else really is.

@ 20…I am a black woman; a strong black woman at that and my mom didn’t teach me that; my grandfather did. My grandfather taught us that it didn’t matter if we had a job changing bedpans for $3.00 an hour as long as we took pride in our work and did everything to raise our children right. There are a lot of examples of “good, strong black men in our community. The problem is that some black men don’t want to look at them or even acknowlege them. You see a black man working hard at McDonalds or hell even carrying books home from school and he’s talked about and made to feel bad about bettering himself.
We generally are no longer a community that watches out for each other but that doesn’t mean that behavior doesn’t exist. How can you teach a person that doesn’t want to hear about what is being taught??? Until i’m proven wrong…every black man that says he didn’t have a father and nobody to teach him how to be a man…go back and study Martin, Malcom and Barack.

This oreo statement is one of the dumbest I have heard in a minute.
Maybe because I was once perceived to be one…I grew up listening to rock and country music…and I played tennis. Yet…I am still black…and I don’t think that anyone linked to the civil rights movement would want to deny me my rights because of my personality. I am still a black woman…
However, we can’t be black when it benefits us, then try to distance ourselves from our people when it benefits us…that’s what gets me…that’s what I define as a sell out.

All I can say watching the campaign from the UK, is that some people are really hating and really don’t want this BLACK man to win. The thing that’s scaring them is that they really see him winning that’s why they are stepping up the discredit game at the moment.
First that disgusting New Yorker cover to alienate white voters who could support him. I care how much they say it was a satire that’s BS. And now this stupid Oreo comment to dampen black support especially as he has a very strong black voting foundation.
It would be a shame if all this ruins his chances. Barack you got a lot love from the UK right now. Do you thing and make incredible history.

Black Men You Need To Rethink This
Wednesday, July 16, 2008 /
You know what??? Ya’ll “black men” kill me with this b.s.
How are you being placed in jail if you are putting yourself in the position to go? Statistics show that then the black community only 25% of arrests have been falsely made…what about the other 75%?
You’re friend picks you up in a brand new luxury car, but it doesn’t cross your mind that the car might be stolen or oh maybe he’s selling drugs?
You know you’re friend has mental issues, ya’ll are at a party and he kills someone with the gun he just showed you last week?
Oh wait how about this one….you were just hanging out with your friends on the street corner and didn’t notice they had a wad of cash and tons of little baggies on them?
Or wait…you know you have kid, but don’t feel like you should pay for the kid and then you get arrested for not paying child support.
What about when you go to a job interview and the interviewer can see all your tats or piercing or the fact that you came in blue jeans and smelling like weed or cigerattes. Did you really expect to get the job? Or maybe your entitled to it because of affirmative action?
It seems like you still have 1001 excuses for why you are in the slump you are instead of directing the blame at yourself. And here’s my last question: if the “man” is this mythical beast that has plauged the black man all these years……how did you get on the boat?

He deserves every bit of hate, disrespect, and condemnation he gets. I find it ironic that he would recommend the same “procedure” to Obama that slave masters and lynch mobs used to perform on black men for centries. Inexcusable! I—-I agree with #20 Ecletic for the most part. The host DID NOT call Obama an Oreo he asked a hypothetical question. Sure no one uses Oreo they just say they are “acting white” and yes for the most part when people use those terms it implies that blacks aren’t smart, well educated, or diverse and some blacks are fortunate to know that we are all these things and more but unfortunately many don’t know and that is the truth. Ask teachers who teach in horrible school systems and they will tell you my friends who are teachers told me. Kids who are attentive, smart still can picked on for being smart and the next thing you know these kids aren’t raising their hands anymore when you know they know the answer.
—-Yes Obama is speaking the truth about taking responsibility but with that said some of the statements he makes are not at the root cause as some has pointed out. I agree that parents need to feed their kids proper breakfast in the morning (cheetos and fake juice don’t count) but not having a good breakfast doesn’t make a kid smart or puts them at a disadvantage it is the lack of money at that school system the lack of decent up-to-date text books and hiring of inadequate teachers.

McLaughlin is helping the Republicans to do their dirty work. They want Obama to be perceived as a “Jesse Jackson” type of presidential candidate, that would pretty much guarantee losing the election because enough White voters would be turned off by it. I’m not surprised to hear Pat “Obama is ‘exotic’” Buchanan say that Blacks shouldn’t blame the “white man” or the system for the problems that exist in the Black community. However, Obama has always stated that it’s about BOTH personal responsibility and the government’s role in making it easier for people to support their families, it’s not an either/or issue. Yes, this type of message will appeal to White voters, especially working-class Whites. However, Obama has been talking about these issues before Black audiences for a long time, even before the primary election began, so this isn’t just about politics.

I have a lot to say but I will keep it short:
1. White people are acting in this election like Obama is the first successful black person. It kills me and proves their very own racism and ignorance.
2. Many people here outlined the fact that Obama is Not an Oreo and nobody looks at him as such so McLaughlin is way, way off base, out of place and offensive! I cannot even tell anyone the last time when I heard somebody use that.
3. Some of you people need to read up on institutionalized racism because it is obvious that too many people do not know how it works.
4. Jesse Jackson though I usually never agree with the guy and believe that we need new leadership, he had a point. Obama standing in front of black crowds telling black parents to stop feeding their children, “cold Popeyes chicken for breakfast” is talking down. I was offended by that and if he was joking, it was not funny especially on a national stage.
Also, in Obama’s Father’s Day speech. He did several things that bothered me:
1. He made the allegation that a single parent household meant a deadbeat dad. There are countless non-resident dads who are in their children’s lives. For him to make that assumption was not very intelligent. In the black community, it is 50/50 so if 50% are in two family homes and a good lets say a good additional percentage of black men are in their children’s lives (there have been studies that showed that many of them are) then that means that the majority are taking care of responsiblity. Obama offended many by going on a national stage, singling out a group of people who are used to being stomped on and perpetuating the negative stereotype of black men as deadbeats who are irresponsible and morally bankrupt. He told millions of black men in this country that they did not exist. He did what everybody else does. It was a white professor @ Columbis when I was a sophmore who pretty much said that “black men were genetically incapable of being fathers”. I was so offended. My father and all the the black fathers that I grew up knowing and continue to see on a regular basis seemed to be invisible due to the constant push of the deadbeat black father. Obama offended many by making that his focus on a day of celebration. Either Obama has an absentee father complex or he simply has falled for the stereotype of all black men at least most being deadbeats so there is nothing to celebrate on Father’s Day in the black community. As the candidate of change, it would have been good if he spoke about fatherhood in universal terms to a mixed audience. He should have redefined fatherhood away from the models of breadwinner and other defintions of fatherhood that revolve around money and redefined it in more universal manner that could also apply to men who are low income.
He also took aim at black parents in general for doing things like cheering at their child’s 8th grade graduation. He went on to give very bad parental advice in that regard.
Obama also messed up when it came to balance. As Michael Eric Dyson pointed out, “…Rock’s humor is so effective because he is just as hard on whites as on blacks. That’s a part of the routine Obama has not yet adopted.Obama’s rebuff of black fathers and his firm insistence on personal responsibility were calculated to win over socially conservative whites who were turned off by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s tirades against persistent racism. But in his desire to appeal to such voters, Obama may have missed the balance.” Obama never gives such speeches in front of other audiences. Who saw him at AIPAC or the LULAC or out in the Crow Nation. The breakdown of the family is an American problem with the divorce rate at 50% coming out of the white community. He would never head over there and give such a speech. If he is running for the president of all Americans, then he should have made it an American speech instead of a black one.

OBAMA AND HIS PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY MSG ONLY FOR BLACK PEOPLE, IS CAUSING OLD SICK BLACK PEOPLE, WHO HAVE WORKED ALL THEIR LIVES, TO BE CUT OFF OF THEIR SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY. THEY’RE BEING ACCUSED OF BEING LAZY INSTEAD OF SICK. THE GENOCIDE CONTINUES. THEY’LL BE DEAD IN A FEW YEARS TRYING TO WORK SICK.

OK we cannot blame white america for all our social ills, yes, (most of it now comes for rappers and teh stereotypical b.s. they portray) but I can say calling a well educated articulate African American an oreo is RACIST. We are not OREOs because we are educated and live and work in prodomenantly white communities because of our acquired pay scale we are any less black then the stereotypical person from a lower income neighborhood, what kind of backward statement is that. And then to try and qualify it by saying because we are not from the generation of the civil rights era. Give me a break. This is the RACIST mess that I wish some of these black politicos would tackle as they sit there and try to avoid the real statements that are being made. Does anyone offer the same question regarding McCain -has he pulled himself from poor white trash or does he belong to the elite class of whites and if so how does he related to PWT, does anyone see the absurdity in that question. Of course its absurd and wouldnt be asked of him because his race is not an issue. America really does suffer from a birth defect when it comes to race and I am tired of its retarded face.

Obama promised change, and that he has done. He single handedly made white america (mostly) acknowledge that racism is still yet alive and well in the world ( Even though they try to tell black america that we should just get over it, and that we fabricate muh or tumult–as far as race is concerned). As a black college student in a predominately white enrolled institution. I have noticed that many of these students both republican and democrat feel that now is the time for change. My question is that unless these students are undercover racist (as many times they are) are their parents and grandparents responsible for the lingering hate and animosity toward blacks in large part (and other people of color)?
A change has been manifested, we as black america now understand that we (black people) are indeed willing to let racism and past injustices go, however many whites want to hold onto these notions. Whether it be that their worst nightmare coming true (Obama will be President of the United States of America in 2008) or that many whites truly believe that they are the dominant race.
Either way we (Americans–even the world knows, cuz they watching) see the change taking place, white folks are feeling victimized and are saying all sorts of “crazy” things, because perhaps they are not ready or prepared for the change to take place.
BTW I hate the notion that America might not be ready for a black president, left up to the tangible powers that be in a fair democratic process I know that we are. If not now then when?
